The Story: Psylocke has returned to the X-Men! Following the defeat of Madelyne Pryor and her Sisterhood, Psylocke travels to Japan to re-inter her former body in its proper resting place. But when a swarm of Hand ninjas attack Psylocke and do the unspeakable under orders from Matsu’o—the assassin originally responsible for transplanting Psylocke’s mind into the body of an Asian ninja—Psylocke determines that Matsu’o is one loose end that can no longer be left unresolved. It’s a tale of carnage and revenge, brought to you by superstars Chris Yost (X-Force) and Harvey Tolibao (Avengers: The Initiative)!

A work of art! Literally amazing. I love Emma's response in the last image pane.

Beautiful layouts if a little cramped, gorgeous colours I just wish he would at least attempt to draw her asian. Cannot wait to read this!!

I hope Psyknifes can pierce that diamond form.

Selene said...

She does look distinctively Asian in the pages,in my opinion...

And,yes, centurion, who thought Yost could actually write Emma correctly(I'm referring to Dark X-Men:The confession)?

centurion said...

@Selene - You are right!

no way....this is outstanding

Yost is eating Fraction alive when it comes to Psylocke character development in only 6 pages...
This gonna be amazing!

This made my day...thanks Luckystar
Art is great, characterization is awesome. Yost should write an ongoing. FOR REALS

i hate fraction compared to actual writers with talent. it's funny when allison blows betsy's face off and the next panel they're like <3BFF like nothing happened. finally a story that actually goes deeper than fraction's bro dialog and land's smiley faces.

Looking good so far. I hope the rest stands for the full issues.

@Chris - I couldn't agree more!

I completely agree, well said.

I really had a problem with the end of that issue for exactly that reason. Yost seems to understand that all the complicated stuff that has happened to Betsy may be complicated, but it also makes her a very layered and interesting character

And I do hope that Betsy responds to Emma's comment in kind.

Awesome! Can Chris Yost replace Fraction as writer for Uncanny?

Don't get me wrong; Fraction has done more for Uncanny than any writer in the past few years has-Issue 511 was probably my favorite since he's started. Furthermore, I like what he's done bringing back vets like Dazzler, Northstar, etc, but USE THEM! Not just to bring in tea and OOLONG for breakfast, herd students to safety, or stand in position with psy-knives at the ready, but actually use them. I can't understand why at this moment when he has almost ALL of the major X-Men of the decade in place he chooses to make it the "Scott and Emma Show". It was NEVER the "Xavier Show" when HE was leader. WTF?
That aside, I am already loving this mini-series. It's been a long time since I've been able to really read a genuine story about the ninja with an edge-very little in the last nine years has come close.

If Yost's Psylocke mini were to become an ongoing series, that would be a landmark change in Psylocke history, but one that is well deserved and long overdue. Psylocke definitely ranks among the top five X-Women, and her popularity seems to be exponentially increasing now that she is gaining greater exposure in the recent Marvel videogames. I was astonished that Kalina, one of Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2's producers, said that Emma Frost ranked quite low on the desired list for an MUA2 DLC, and Betsy was among the top five.

Just for the record, Kalina, part of Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2's producers, said that Emma Frost ranked very low on the survey for desired list for an MUA2 DLC, and Betsy was 2nd place, being Jean Grey the first one. Both on female characters list (and Jean's already in the game) ;)

Regarding the Yost vs. Fraction comparison, Yost and Kyle have already said that their biggest goal is to get to write the Uncanny X-Men book someday; maybe when Fraction ends his run, they will become the new writers. The problem is, Fraction is a best-seller writer and he's also critically acclaimed (Eisner winner, after all), so Kyle & Yost probably won't get the book until Fraction himself decides to leave it (BTW, I usually love his work; I just think he's much better writing solo heroes books than team books).

Anyway, regarding this Psylocke issue, it looks great! I wish she would punch Dazzler in the boobs for destroying her old body's face. I wish she would do the same to Emma because of Emma's jokes, but since punching diamond boobs would only hurt Betsy's hands, she'd better get revenge by insulting Emma with a witty remark. I love Emma, but sometimes she needs someone to put her in her place.

FSaker said...

BTW, Betsy also appears in the X-Men vs. Agents of Atlas #2 preview: http://comicbookresources.com/?page=preview&id=3723&disp=table

Unfortunately, Namora punches her right at the beginning of the fight. Fortunately, Dazzler, Storm and Iceman soon put the bitch out of action for Betsy.

Definately gonna need to buy double copies of these books. 1 copy to read and the other copy to put in a mill case, sit down, stare and awe at it's awesomeness and shinyness!:p

I really don't like the logo, it doesn't stands out enough, it's too plain.

Art is terrific, though.

FSaker said...

One interesting thing is that the first page, unless it is a red herring, shows that she gets her revenge against Matsu'o in the end...

Although I doubt he will really die.

centurion said...

@FSaker - Hey. Interesting comments, as always.

@La Betsy - Hi. I was surprised to hear that Emma ranked low... Maybe Emma is loosing her videogame groove :)

Best,
centurion

centurion said...

My prediction is that the Psylocke mini is going to sell out quickly :)

Rogue said...

@centurion It's my prediction too, Betts is finally getting a personality and it pleases me that she's being so well handled. I loved to see glimpses of good ol' Betts, cause ever since she went Asian and Claremont bolted from Uncanny she's either been a whore or wallpaper. I hope that Yost gets another chance to write her in the future...

centurion said...

@Rogue - Hi. That possibility may invariably depend on how well the mini does in terms of sales. Psylocke is one of those characters that has brought Marvel much money in the 90s, and she has been very popular among the female X-Men over the years.

I love Psylocke. its one of the characters from x-men who really have a background, and its fantastic the way thar history was made always as a suporting character. This mini can bring betsy show her personality. I love the to see emma and betsy together, like in uncanny 460. I really like that she is a telepath again, but i really hope that she continue as a telekinetic. the katana is awesome

Anonymous said...

I love emma's comment "Darling you've never looked better"

I can't wait for her and psylocke to get in a cat fight

Unknown said...

I'm really impressed by the dialogue. He really captures the two sides of her personality - heroic and caring, yet dangerous and unpredictable.

centurion said...

I am glad that I am not the only one that wishes to see a Betsy and Emma cat fight!

FSaker said...

@centurion - You can be sure of that, man! I love Betsy, I love Emma, but I definitely want them to verbally attack each other (maybe they could fight telepathically too, but now that Emma can't leave the diamond form, we can't see that)!

One thing I was noticing: in one of Yost's early interviews about the mini, I remember he said something about Betsy still wearing the buttfloss suit because the story took place right after the Sisterhood arc, so she couldn't have a new outfit in it and return to the old one in Utopia; but these preview pages show the story takes place after the events of Utopia...

Ah well, maybe I didn't understand correctly what he said.

Anonymous said...

FSaker. I think you're confuded. Yost has never mentioned this. He said "She definitely is going back to her ninja assassin look. We tend to think of that as what people identify as the definitive Psylocke." He never said anything about Betsy not able to wear another costume because the story takes place after Siterhood.

centurion said...

@FSaker - Hey there. Yeah. Both Betsy and Emma make great rivals!

Best,
centurion

Florence said...

no i think i remember him saying something early on about it taking place right after the sisterhood storyline too, which is weird because they weren't on the island yet. i wish her return to the main books was this mini first instead of in Uncanny. if they have no intention of ever bringing back the british version that some of us still prefer i wish they would just leave her alone instead of baiting us in and then killing her off again.

luckystar. said...

You know, I've been thinking. This story really happens after Sisterhood. In the last Sisterhood issue (UXM511) Beast annoys Cyclops and Emma about their secrets. Utopia then happened exactly one week after Beast's talk. I'd guess Betsy is back for just 2 weeks in Marvel time.

hi, i've never wrote a comment on this blog but i read it daily and i have to say i love it; thanks to everyone who posts and comments.
i've decided to wrote just to bring you a scan of psylocke from "gals on the run": i'm italian, so i've been at lucca comics and games where i've bought it. i have to say i don't like manara's art and the story is preatty silly. anyway... http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2537/4064253838_c72b4803a6_b.jpg

i thank againg for this blog, ìcause here in italy they haven't published neither the "new exiles" stories with betsy nor the "sword of the braddocks" one-shot and moreover they haven't published the sisterhood arc yet (but soon...) and i don't know if they will publish the psylocke mini. so, if there weren't this blog, i really don't know what i'd do.

p.s.: sorry for my english ;-)

Cool scan, nicce. Did the comic come out there yet?

luckystar. said...

Thank you so much nicce! Can I post your scan here? If it's not asking much, can you tell what's the story about? Thank you! <3

nicce said...

@ sublimeclown: it come out last thursday for the Lucca comics & games.

@ luckystar: sure you can and as soon as i can i'll tell you what's the story about and post some new scans.

she's acting like she's supposed to. the analytical mind of a telepath, the threatening instincts of a warrior, but still she requires friends.

also she has her original monologue style, which hasn't been there since Claremont left in the early nineties! "...turn off his mind right like a switch."

i loved new exiles, but THIS is psylocke baby!
