Cup O' Joe: Marvel T&A

CBR: There were honestly too many folks asking after Psylocke's costume, so I went with psycwave's specific wording with "Hey Axel, are the covers for Uncanny X-Force temporary as most seem to be just recolored outfits, namely Psylocke's? It just seems like the character is cursed to wear the thong outfit for all eternity never to be updated or the like, especially when many of the X-men go through costume revamps on a regular basis."

Alonso: They are not temporary. Psylocke is sporting her regulation X-Force silver-and-black tho - I mean, uniform. With it's streamlined aerodynamic design, and splatterproof material, it's the perfect outfit for bringing the fight to the doorstep of anyone who'd mess with mutants.

Seriously? There have been SO many requests for Psylocke to get a costume change in just X-Position nevermind the boards, blogs, and interviews elsewhere.

I imagine there's additional hesitance thanks to the ridiculous level of negative attention given to Wonder Woman's costume change.

But whatever, how hard is it to adjust her costume just so that it no longer has potential to being made a thong?

Psychilde said...

I LOVE that cover, such beautiful colours!
But seriously with the costume, they constantly get requests, WHY DON'T YOU LISTEN TO YOUR FANS MARVEL!!

Betsy looks like a Cambodian refugee...

Anonymous said...

seriously you psylocke fans some of you are nuts. you have to get over the costume thing. she's been wearing it for decades, they aren't going to up and change it particularly so soon after her return to the main books. wolverine has been wearing the same variation on his costume for a lot longer, and so have many other mutants. i think it's time you all put it to rest before the creators get more angry and annoyed that you keep asking constantly on every q&a. it's embarrassing.

What about a few updates?
The fans are demanding her costume update for ages...
A few anatomic strips to give the bathsuit an actual look, like kevlar texture or something similar.
And for God sake, the X symbol in the belt...
Everyone in the team got it, but not her. Why?

Anonymous said...

Oh shut up... I love the costume, it is classic! Perfect for a ninja!

Anonymous said...

How stupid would it be if they cluttered her classic minimalism with a bunch of superfluous X-symbols. Her costume has endured because of its simplicity. The ass that invented the supposedly problematic issue with her tight fit butt should just get in a gym instead of bitching about her suit. That person was suggesting messing with an icon, and you all fell for it. Get real. Her costume is tasteful, and very 'current' because it's basically timeless. The other characters got costume changes because they were weak. For heaven's sake, the 'boxers vs. briefs' thing is very tired and stupid. DON'T MESS WITH BETSY'S SEXY ASS.

FSaker said...

"wolverine has been wearing the same variation on his costume for a lot longer, and so have many other mutants"

But exactly like you said, Wolverine has been wearing the same VARIATION of his costume - in other words, although they are similar, he's constantly getting small updates in his costume. Same thing with all the other X-Men.

Psylocke, on the other hand, has been wearing not the same VARIATION of a costume, but THE SAME COSTUME, PERIOD. If Marvel wants to keep her in a bathing suit, okay, but is it so hard to at least UPDATE it?? She doesn't even have a "X" badge in her uniform to identify her as part of the X-Men; it's surprising that the newest members of the team don't think she's just a random inhabitant in Utopia...

Alan said...

i don't think one x could really hurt to add. =/

but i don't mind the fact she'll be keeping the basic outfit on.

Giles said...

"i think it's time you all put it to rest before the creators get more angry and annoyed that you keep asking constantly on every q&a. it's embarrassing."

Lol, thanks for your imput. If we had listened to you Mr Anonymous a few years ago, Psylocke would probably still be dead or trapped in the crystal wall with the rest of her former NE team.

luckystar. said...

What's funny is that now that her 'uniform' is black, it still looks blue most of the time lol. :(

Well, at least she could go back to her Exiles uniform just for a 'change'...

I made an edit for what I would have done for an Uncanny X-Force Psylocke.

http://i36.tinypic.com/aayk1.jpg

I used the concept from MUA2, but used the MUA2 HoM alternate costume for the face. I made the costume darker, with purple tinting. Changed the sash to silver/black/gray.

Eh, I really have no problems with the current costume. I do have to agree that I'd rather see her not wear a bathing suit.

Anonymous said...

That's really good! I'd totally be up for some very subtle updates like this.

(My Name is psyfreak)

Why is psylocke's outfit so offensive to every one?

Do you guys know that most people who are mildly familiar with the X-men franchise don't even know who the hell Besty is and if they do they know her as the chick in the blue bathing suit!!! If you take that away from her she'll be even harder to recognize by the ignorant masses!!!

Besty fans should be thankful she's even alive! face it Besty is not a core member of the X-men and she'll never reach storm, cyclops or wolverines level. she'll never be part of the core roster of the team in any cartoon or movie. I'm sure she'll be overlooked for Emma or even Jean.

I think we should be thankful she's even alive and getting what little respect she can get.

PS. X-men badges are SOOOO gaudy anyway.

Anonymous said...

Im am so sick of supposed fans bashing the bathing suit. She has had many new costumes: Revolution, X-treme, Exiles (which was awful and waaaay more slutty), Old school yellow and blue X-men uniform and House of M costume. You guys all call her a slut and your supposed to be her bloody fans. Let it go. The sash bathing suit and leg strappies are her iconic costume if it aint broke dont fix it. The fact she has an amazing butt is a plus not a minus! I agree they should definitely draw the line at making it look like a thong but other than that i really dont see the problem that everyone seems to bith and whine about constantly, cant we just be happy shes back in the x-men and in a mainstream title?!?!

Anonymous said...

There is a reason she has to wear slutty clothes!!! It is a weapon for her!!! A way to distract her enemies!!! That's the way of a kunoichi (female ninja)!!! I don't see why she can't use her Exiles' outfit!!! It was awesome!!!

FSaker said...

Most people here aren't complaining that Psylocke's outfit is allegedly offensive. In fact, read again the question that was sent to Alonso: it never says her outfit is offensive, slutty or whatsoever.

The reason why many people are complaining is that her outfit is always the same. Not that she gets similar-patterned outfits, but that she always has the same outfit, period.

Like I said before, if Marvel wants to keep her in a blue bathing suit as an outfit, go for it. But UPDATE IT!! Look at Wolverine's costume, for instance: it has the visual identity of his old-school outfit, yet updated to a modern look. Same for Storm: she wears a black bathing suit like in the 1970s, but in a design that looks modern and fresh. Same for everyone.

Psylocke, however? She's still with the same bathing suit she wears since the end of the 1980s. Not a similar bathing suit made to keep her visual identity but updated, it is THE. SAME. OLD. OUTFIT.

And Betsy "not being iconic enough" to get a new outfit is BULLSH*T. Dazzler and Northstar are both less iconic than her, yet they got new designs for their outfits. Gambit, who's probably on par with her in terms of popularity (maybe even below her, since Betsy appears in many X-titles while Remy is often stuck in Legacy), recently got a new one.

PS. Gaudy or not, X-Men badges is what identifies them as (surprise!) X-Men. Just like blue outfits with a "4" identify the Fantastic Four members. It is RIDICULOUS when even non-X-Men members like Fantomex and Deadpool have X-Men badges but Betsy doesn't.

FSaker said...

BTW, for the record: I AM grateful that Marvel brought Psylocke back to the X-Men, that she's getting more and more respect and being featured in more and more books.

However, it doesn't mean I have to be satisfied with everything or that I'm not allowed to express my opinion about it. Actually, that's exactly what readers are supposed to do: give Marvel some feedback so that the creative teams know what is pleasing the writers and what isn't, and how they can solve the problems.

As Mr. Hellfire wisely said at his blog, and I agree, it is very likely of Psylocke's recent continued success is due to her fans constantly asking the Marvel editors and writers to use her in their stories, supporting her. Maybe if we didn't show there are many people interested in stories with Psylocke, she would be filling the same role that Dazzler currently does as wallpaper. Instead, she got some participation in the Nation X arc, had a good presence in Second Coming and now will be part of both the X-Men and the new X-Force. Even Heimberg showed her in his tie-in back story to The Children's Crusade.

All of this is just my opinion, of course. But it seems I'm not the only one with this opinion here...

I just disagree with you on this point. Psylocke's profile rising has nothing to do with fans asking about her. If it were that way, Jean Grey would already be back by now. We're lucky Axel Alonso and most X-Writers seem to love her.;p

Anonymous said...

i agree. i'm sorry, but nagging to marvel and being sticklers and nit picking things will not make a writer want to put it in the book. the long time readers of the x-books are not influential and are hardly ever happy with marvel's choices. marvel doesn't care. it's about money. psylocke is not back because the fans kept bugging about it. she's back because they are getting into new media with the next wolverine movie being set in japan, the new x-men anime, and the new marvel vs capcom. they want to push some characters so that they are familiar enough to include at least as an option. matt fraction specifically said he only brought psylocke in because he wanted racial variation on the team. meaning she is the token asian. she is not in uncanny or anything else because of the fans pursuit in nagging. psylocke fans have been asking about a new costume constantly for the last two years and each time they are shot down. she's not getting a new costume.

Anonymous said...

But as i said before it isnt like she hasnt had a whole slew of new costumes over the last 20 years, she probably has changed her look as many if not more times than the likes of Jean, Gambit etc. Iceman hasnt changed his look since 90's and Angel is back to his 90's archangel look too. Colossus hardly ever changes and if anyone drastically needs a new outfit to make them stand out more its Kitty Pryde. Its the same with Villains Magneto, Mystique, mister Sinister and Sabretooth hardly ever changed their costumes so its not like this is some awful blight only affecting Psylocke.

Anonymous said...

"cursed to wear the thong outfit for all eternity"

sounds like fan bashing yet again to me.

Anonymous said...

I love her costume, it's great! Just add the X

I appreciate all the opinions on this site and yes we don't have to be satisfied with everything that revolves around Psylocke just because we're her fans. If you don't like the outfit you have the right to voice that and yes it helps keep her relevant as a character because it shows her fans want to be hands on in the decision making.

Anonymous said...

Psylock is not on par with gambit in popularity! she hasn't even been cast as a major character in any of the cartoons.

She also changed her outfit in the Extreme comics even though she was killed off by the third or second issue.

Anonymous said...

PS. Gaudy or not, X-Men badges is what identifies them as (surprise!) X-Men. Just like blue outfits with a "4" identify the Fantastic Four members.

Lol. I had no idea Psylocke was part of the X-Men!? Must be because she didn't have a stupid badge attached to her vagina to *identify* her. I just thought she was some random hot chick that showed up once in while. I mean, there was absolutely NO WAY I would've EVER figured out she was part of the X-Men. After all, aren't they supposed to have large buttons pinned on with a big X on them? How does she qualify to be on the team without one? I demand that she be awarded an X-badge of honour immediately! Otherwise, I will be in danger of being SURPRISED in every panel that she is not IDENTIFIED as an X-Man!

Lol, sorry, that was a silly comment.

Also, you're comparing the X-Men's individual costumes to the Fantastic 4's standard uniforms, which is apples to oranges. It would be the standard X-uniform (the kind the New Mutants wear) that you would compare to the Fantastic 4 in that example.

P.S. Would someone mind telling me who that asian woman is with the purple hair that keeps showing up in the comics? I have no idea who she is since nobody IDENTIFIED her with an X-Badge. If she were really an X-Man I would be so surpr... (you get the picture.) ;)

My vote: SAME COSTUME, NO GIRL SCOUT BADGE

Anonymous said...

It's just a comicbook guys. Chill out. Some folks like the outfit some don't--who cares.

FSaker said...

"After all, aren't they supposed to have large buttons pinned on with a big X on them?"

Uh... yes, they are. Have you read X-Men recently? ALL of them have "large buttons pinned on with a big X on them". Well, except Magneto (who probably wasn't fully accepted by Cyclops as an official X-Man yet) and... yes, PSYLOCKE.

Whether YOU like it or not, the "X" is part of the visual identity of the team. The X-Men may not wear similar outfits like the Fantastic Four, but they still have the badges to identify themselves as a team.

P.S. Isn't it a little bit contradictory to say it is hard to get Psylocke identified by the "ignorant masses", then say that the fact she constantly appears in the comics is already enough for the same "ignorant masses" to identify her as part of the X-Men?

FSaker said...

"Psylock is not on par with gambit in popularity! she hasn't even been cast as a major character in any of the cartoons.

Gambit has only been cast as a major character in the 1990s cartoon, and back then both of them were very popular. And if I remember correctly, Psylocke has been more featured in video games than Gambit (mostly thanks to Capcom, yes, but still).

And let's not forget which one of them is getting the most spotlight in the X-titles nowadays...

FSaker said...

Oh, about the Xtreme outfit, I LOVED it! It is a shame that she died shortly after debuting that outfit...

I'd like to see a return of that outfit. If people are so concerned with keeping her looks "iconic", just take away the garter belts and add the sash.

I dunno I've always liked her blue bikini and her pink/purple little red riding hood get up from the 80's x-men in Australia.

@FSaker - I fully agree with you regarding your defense of Psylocke's popularity in the 90's. A point you mentioned that was noteworthy was in regards to the fact that Betsy was featured in so many Capcom video games of the 90s, which could (maybe this was just a 90s thing) suggest that they may include her in Marvel vs. Capcom 3 as a first round character or a DLC. Psylocke definitely fits the mould for a fighting game more than Emma Frost, that's for sure.

Cheers.

FSaker, videogames don't contribute to a characters popularity. Gambit was part of the TAS cast. That alone puts him way ahead of Psylocke in terms of popularity. TAS cast = the more recognizable X-Men to the general public.

Anonymous said...

No, it's not.
All-New All Different X-Men, Outback X-Men, anyone?

FSaker said...

"FSaker, videogames don't contribute to a characters popularity."

Says who? Videogames are part of the representation of a character's popularity, just like animations, movies and other media.

And no, the TAS characters are not the most recognizable ones. Who's more popular, Nightcrawler or Jubilee? Kitty Pryde or Jean Grey? It all can be argued.

"No, it's not.
All-New All Different X-Men, Outback X-Men, anyone?"

1990s X-Men, anyone? Grant Morrison's X-Men, anyone? Reload era (once again, minus Psylocke)?

The Outback X-Men even had a reason for not wearing the X symbol, since they were supposed to be dead. The "X" would make them easy to be recognized.

Guess we'd better agree on disagreeing.

Excuse me Fsaker, you're mixing and matching two different (Anonymous?) posters. I don't know who you're quoting, but I definitely said nothing of the sort, so your argument that I'm being contradictory is invalid. So don't go putting words into my mouth to lend support to your own argument, aiight? Besides, your argument, um, sucks. Sorry. LOL.

BUUUT, if we add some Xs, then I say we add a small X on each nipple, and one X on her vajayjay. That way she has a total of three, just in case Fsaker misidentified her the first two times with the nipple Xs. Geez, now that I think of it, I'm totally *surprised* any of the other team members even TALK to her without any identifiable Xs on her body! Ugh, the nerve of her!

Anonymous said...

Says who? Videogames are part of the representation of a character's popularity, just like animations, movies and other media.

What I'm saying is that Psylocke being in 3598 videogames doesn't make her more popular than Gambit. Gambit being in TAS STILL makes him more popular than Psylocke. Period.

FSaker said...

Geez, you're so funny... eh, not really.

Once again, she is part of the X-Men. X-Men wear the "X" symbol in their clothes. If YOU don't want her to have it, it's your prerogative, but don't come here all arrogant trying to bash the opinion of who thinks otherwise.

You're right that I mistook you with another Anonymous, though. My bad.

Again, SAYS WHO?? YOU??

If being in TAS made anyone popular, Jubilee and Beast would be amazingly popular among readers, and maybe Jean Grey would already be back to life. Nothing like that happened so far.

Anonymous said...

"And THAT's supposed to be your argument? Wow, now THAT sucks..."

Um, no. That is not an argument. Any attempt to argue the academic logic of adding or not adding an X on her outfit will ultimately result in pure laughable ridiculousness (i.e. YOU.) I just made a statement, which I should clarify: I disagree. That is all. Well, also an X button doesn't go with her outfit. It would look awkward and tacky. Have you considered that they thought about it, and there's a reason its not there? Give it up Fsaker. FAIL.

"Geez, you're so funny... eh, not really."

Considering I was laughing AT you (not with you) it makes sense you would not be partaking in the hilarity? ;)

"Once again, she is part of the X-Men. X-Men wear the "X" symbol in their clothes."

PSylocke is an X-Man. She doesn't wear an X-symbol on her clothes. FAIL. (Also, it doesn't make her less of an X-Man just because she doesn't have the button/badge/whatever.)

"If YOU don't want her to have it, it's your prerogative, but don't come here all arrogant trying to bash the opinion of who thinks otherwise."

But that's what you're doing. Anyways, if they did add a fugly badge on her, I'm sure it wouldn't be the end of the world for me. I almost want them to do it just so you would relax, hmm?

J77 said...

Speaking of the X-symbol many X-Men used to not wear any badge. Nightcrawler, Wolverine amd Colossus went without the badge for many years. I think it was not until the 90s that the badge bagan to be regular part of most uniforms.

@FSaker - Hi. I always wondered why Psylocke, at the height of her popularity, was not included as a mainstay in the X-Men Animated Series of the 90s? Why was she just relegated to several cameo appearances towards the end of the show's run on television? She was one of the most significant (and recognizable characters) on the X-Men Blue team....

Anonymous said...

Again, SAYS WHO?? YOU??

Why so angry? Being in videogames don't boost a character popularity. It's not me who says. Ask a non-reader who's Psylocke? They probably wouldn't know. Ask a non-reader who's Gambit? There's a certain chance they will probably say "Oh the guy from X-Men". Simples as that.

Search for Gambit and Psylocke on Google. See which one returns more results. I really love Psylocke, but if you think she's more popular than Gambit, than you're really delusional.

centurion said...

@Anonymous 1:46AM - Hi. Popularity is such a dynamic and relative entity. Psylocke is definitely a resurgent character on the X-Men, whose popularity has risen in the past few years, not to the level she was in the 90s, but definitely more than the early 2000s. I just don't understand why at the height of per popularity in the 90s why she was just a cameo queen on the Animated Series, when most of the Blue Team was given the spotlight on that show in those days? Was this a marketing decision? Why was Betsy so marginalized in TAS?

Anonymous said...

Because thoy couldn´t have a giant roster back then...so they had to cut Archangel, Betsy, Iceman, Bishop and Colossus of the main rosters and put the team in only one group....so I guess they also wanted to have different power sets...they had already Professor as a telepath...they couldn´t have three....and Jean had more history, plots and relationship with the other charatcers than Betsy so that why she was left out.
By the way...I cant´believe your "fighting" over her costume....you can´t pelase anybody...and they just didn´t changed it yet because I´m sure they want to re-establish her to the newer audiances with her iconic look that always worked for her.....in a near future they will adapt it if she gets popular enough...don´t worry.....I meen you guys should be happy she got a major spotlight going on for her...and hope she´s in the next Wolverine movie...then she will get LOTS of new costumes, covers, apperences, merchandises....!

anywhoos.the outfit,my vote=I Like it,always have, make it black and silver for X-Force and ill be happy, but(t) other than that i like the design and its instantly recognizable.I dont mind her keeping it as her default outfit and changing it up every now and again (like that wetsuit a few months ago)

Psyclocke was a cameo queen as you put it because of her extremely revealing blue bikini. Think about it all the other x-men in less revealing outfits were main characters

Of course I could be wrong maybe they thought that they wouldn't need so much telepath, which means jean would win because of the phoenix and cyclops story line.

I agree with this. Really, we all love Psylocke, but there's no chance in hell she's more popular than Gambit...

Anonymous said...

If the revealing outfit idea were true then she wouldnt have shown up in that outfit at all. She was simply the 3rd telepath, the other 2 being too important to remove. Iceman, Colossus and Angel hardly got any exposure either.

I hate the cajun but he is far more popular than Betsy, even if he does bugger all in the comics nowadays most people who vaguely know X-men know Gambit.

If Betsy's popularity is in question, then I think the next obvious question, is how do we increase her popularity?

Well I certainly hope Betsy I'd in marvel vs Capcom 3 if they put that damn white wolf as a playing character but to even suggest she is in the new wolverine movie sends chills up my spine!!! Can't wait to see if they add such a rich character to inject powerful dynamic to the wolverine storyline SMART MOVE cause Jean and professor x are played out as the main telepaths in the mainstream audience I nominate Ziyi Zhang as movie Psylocke check her out in hero/ crouching tiger for action and 2046/ memoirs of a
Geisha for her excellent emotional skills. She is the perfect Betsy.

People tend to forget to think about the GENERAL PUBLIC... the people about my age who saw the cartoon DEFINATELY see Jubilee as way more popular than Emma ou Emma Frost, the impact it had is way bigger than the comics alone.

It was on several local channels aswell as Fox... these are "mass comunication vehicles" (I said it like we say in portuguese, I'm not sure that term is used abroad, but I think you all got the idea), and reach way more people than the comics alone. Not to mention the difference between the timelines in each country, as some are behind, so it's harder to generalize.
