Steve Foxe Talks "Dead X-Men" and their Secret Mission

Newsarama: There are big changes coming to the X-Men line in 2024, as mutantkind heads toward a new era in the wake of the fall of Krakoa. Along the way, writer Steve Foxe and a whole host of artists are introducing the Dead X-Men, a group of mutants who were killed in the fall of Krakoa, but who are now resurrected and uniting as a team.

What's it like putting together an X-Men team that doesn't revolve around the main cast of core X-Men characters? What's your philosophy with this line-up?

Foxe: The fun thing about these five is that, with the exception of Prodigy, they've all served as main-team (or close enough) X-Men before, so we've seen how they fit into an established team dynamic. But there's no elder statesman X-Man here - no Cyclops or Jean or Logan to call the shots - so this is our chance to see them on an even playing field together. I'd say Frenzy naturally falls into a “leader” position more than the others, but no one's a slack-off on this squad.

Frenzy is the steady, level-headed, driven natural leader. Jubilee brings the spunk and fire. Prodigy is the team's heart as much as its brain. Cannonball is a hero to his core, selfless and courageous. And Dazzler is a bit of a wildcard - she surprised me at times.

The one member of the team not revealed on any covers yet is Rachel Summers, most recently known as Askani. I have to choose my words carefully here so as not to spoil Kieron Gillen's intricate plans in Rise of the Powers of X and X-Men Forever, but Rachel was tasked by Xavier with putting together a team to boldly go where no mutants have gone before, and she's guiding them from afar. She's a bit like M from James Bond, if M was psychic and her head was on fire.

And of course Rachel is dating Betsy Braddock, who makes a dramatic entrance on our just-revealed third cover, wearing a costume I know a lot of Betsy fans have been eager to see back in action. My lips are sealed beyond that, but hey, we aim to please when we can!

X-Men Monday #228 – Chris Claremont Talks ‘Wolverine: Madripoor Knights’

AIPT: What can you share about the origins of Uncanny X-Men #268? What made you want to tell that story?

Chris Claremont: It was Jim and me just getting started. We had Logan, Jubilee, and Psylocke in Madripoor. We had just finished what happened with Betsy in the three-part story that was, in a way, Jim’s audition. So, I think I just wanted to do a one-part story. You get on, you say your piece, and you get off. Tell a story in a single issue, hand it to someone who’s never read Uncanny X-Men before, and see if they can get to the end of the story and know all they need to know. And maybe they want to come back and see what happens next without resorting to tender hooks.

This comes out of my upbringing, I guess. Stan Lee’s philosophy was that since the distribution of comics was so wretched, every issue should be a one-part story because you can never guarantee that the same store will get the same series next month. On the other hand, he would say, if it’s a really good story, like God Loves, Man Kills, you can have two issues.

AIPT: Can we expect Jubilee and Psylocke to play a role in Wolverine: Madripoor Knights as well?

Chris Claremont: No. That’s what the first issue’s all about: Get it focused on Cap, Natasha, and Logan. On the other hand, that doesn’t mean that at some time in the future, the question might be asked, “Well, what the heck were Psylocke and Jubilee doing for those two days?” Well, maybe we should do a story that shows you what they were doing for those two days.

AIPT Comics Podcast Episode 247 with Steve Foxe

Steve Foxe: Betsy and Rachel’s fans are very passionate, very excited. They’re going to have lots of things to look forward to in the spring. 2024 is for you guys. In 2024, we’re going to hit the ground running. You’re going to see plenty of Rachel and Betsy. […] I said before, Betsy was planned for a relatively small role in the spring, and once Gerry leaked that I was working with Rachel and Betsy, and I saw how excited people were, Betsy’s role grew probably five-fold, and that is not to say that you should ask creators or demand… no. But it was a moment where I was like “Okay, you know what? People are very excited at the prospect of Betsy. I should reconsider what I was thinking. I think she could have a much bigger role in this. It’s going to serve the story. It’s going to make sense.” And that was the thought process that began from seeing that passion. Source: AIPT!

X-Men Monday #225 – X Me Anything With the X-Office

AIPT: Now, the question that gives X-Fans new reasons to speculate in these anniversary editions — who are the characters to watch as the Krakoan era comes to a close?

Gerry Duggan: Everyone is on the table.

Steve Orlando: I’ll say, regarding X-Men Unlimited, that some of the original New Mutants will be playing a big role. Moonstar and Sunsport lead a big push in the book, with the Proudstar brothers, especially John, right beside them.

Kieron Gillen: Xavier. Jean. Moira. All endings and beginnings, and vice versa.

Steve Foxe: Fans who’ve patiently been waiting for more Rachel and Betsy, your time is coming. And the X-Men team that never was is going to show everyone why they deserved their spots.

Al Ewing: Storm, Magneto, Apocalypse. Each getting their moment. And as Steve says, keep an eye on Sunspot… though someone’s going to take that advice and regret it.

NYCC 2023: The Rise and Fall of the X-Men's Krakoa Age Revealed

Marvel.com: In 2019, fans witnessed the dawn of the Krakoan Age in Jonathan Hickman’s groundbreaking HOUSE OF X and POWERS OF X, two interconnected five-issue limited series that spanned mutant history and future. Now, the Krakoan Age ends in the same dramatic fashion in FALL OF THE HOUSE OF X and RISE OF THE POWERS OF X. Each delivering half of the story that will bring the Krakoan Age to its conclusion, the pair of series will feature the X-Men of today and the X-Men of tomorrow as they wage the final war against extinction across their entire existence! Evolution is inevitable. Extinction is optional!

The two series are fittingly crafted by some of the Krakoa’s defining architects, writer Gerry Duggan (X-MEN, MARAUDERS) and artist Lucas Werneck (IMMORTAL X-MEN) delivering FALL OF THE HOUSE OF X and writer Kieron Gillen (IMMORTAL X-MEN) and artist R.B. Silva (POWERS OF X) delivering RISE OF THE POWER OF X, plus covers by HOUSE OF X superstar artist Pepe Larraz

Steve Foxe Talks Betsy Braddock and Upcoming Project

Homo Superior Podcast: We've got a question from Chris_KG on twitter. Any Betsy or Rachel crumbs or nuggets that you know of? And then is there, barring that, is there anything that you think you scripted that was elevated by Jonas?

Foxe: Yeah. So Betsy and Rachel, I can say because Gerry already said it, I am writing both of them in upcoming projects. Not the same project but I'm not splitting them up so no one... sapphics calm down, they're fine. (Laughter) What can I say... cause I know this twitter user has been very eager to find out more about Betsy and Rachel... I can say that, to be honest, Betsy's role in the project that I'm working on has grown because I have seen how many fans are excited about her returning. So I would say that in the first conception she was a supporting character and she has elevated to a larger role because I think the demand is out there. There are a lot of Betsy fans and, you know, she's one of my favorite characters. She's been around for a very long time, she's held a lot of different roles but I'm excited to continue her time as Captain Britain.

X-Men Monday #223 – Jordan D. White Comes Clear About Betsy Braddock

AIPT!: How do you, as an editor, perceive what worked and didn’t work for Betsy Braddock in the Krakoan era? Despite headlining three different books, two of them were short-lived and didn’t make as much of an impact as other titles in the line-up. Consequently, Betsy has spent months in comic book limbo. What do you think could be done to course-correct this and elevate her once more?

Jordan: OK, do you want me to start with my joke answer? She’s just had a modeling gig and she’s been super busy. She booked a new gig and she was like, “I understand Orchis and all that, but this photoshoot isn’t going to wait. I need to go do this.”

OK, now that you hate me because I made that joke, I’m sorry. Yeah, listen, we’ve already talked a lot about how many X-characters there are. I’m going to kind of reiterate what you just said to make sure I understand it.

We tried three different series about Betsy. And if I’m reading correctly into your interpretation, you’re saying some of those books didn’t do as well as you assume Marvel would like, and your concern is that we are going to put that on Betsy and not other factors that could have made the book not sell well, which obviously also presupposes other things, like that Betsy herself does sell books in a vacuum and that we have to be honest with ourselves about the fact that we didn’t tell a good enough story about Betsy to give her the showcase that she deserves to sell the books that she needs to sell. And with a different creative team, with a different writer, with a different artist, we could make a book that will craft towards the purpose of highlighting and showcasing Betsy in the best possible way.

I mean, I’ve talked many times about how much I love the character of Betsy Braddock. So I hope that you know that I’m a fan of that character. That’s a character I like and care about. But I don’t know that your supposition, that she is a character that needs to be focused on, is necessarily accurate. Yes, she was focused on because we made a choice. We wanted to tell a story about her becoming the new Captain Britain. And we played that story out in Excalibur, then we played that story out a bit more in Knights of X, and then we played it out more in Betsy Braddock: Captain Britain. Obviously, our hope was that Betsy Braddock: Captain Britain, for example, would continue to sell, and that it would become an ongoing series that would be still running to this day. Yes, that is why we did not say, “Let’s make sure she’s in Realm of X, let’s make sure she’s in any of the Fall of X books,” because the hope had been, ideally that book will continue into Fall of X. And that’s where you’ll see what she’s doing. So you were correct about that part of it, but she had that attention on her because that was a story we wanted to tell, and we told it for as long as we were financially able to tell it. And now we are not currently.

I will tell you that, unlike some of the characters we’ve talked about today, I do know where Betsy is going to appear next. I know two different places where Betsy’s going to appear next. She is a character that we care about. And honestly, the fact that she was as important as she was for so many issues does make it a little strange that she has not appeared. But that’s how the cookie crumbled, unfortunately. I wish it had gone differently. We have plans for where she’s going to be next. We will see her again before the Krakoan age is through for certain.

AIPT: And it’s Steve Foxe writing Betsy. He talked about that here recently.

Jordan: Gerry Duggan did tease that Steve Foxe is doing something that will involve her.

AIPT: And Rachel.

Jordan: Yes, though Steve’s not the only one. There are other folks. Anyway, yeah, she’s going to be back. But with Betsy, like, I don’t know what you want… I mean, I think I do know what you want me to say…

AIPT: Based on some of the other questions I’ve seen submitted over these past few months, I believe there’s frustration that when a beloved character like Betsy’s series abruptly ends, there’s no backup plan to get her to the Hellfire Gala or worked into an event as important as the Fall of X.

Jordan: Of course, of course. I mean, we didn’t have a backup plan for Betsy, because again, as much as I love her, it’s Betsy Braddock. She’s not the most important character in the X-Men. If suddenly we had nowhere where Wolverine was showing up, yeah, we’d probably have a backup in place. If suddenly the book that Cyclops was showcased in stopped happening, then yeah, we’d probably go, “Well, we can’t not do Cyclops.”

I don’t think Betsy has reached that status. And this is a tricky one, because I’m extremely glad that we separated Betsy and Kwannon. But I also think it’s possible that the continued existence of Kwannon as Psylocke has hurt Betsy in the sense that she became most popular when she was Kwannon and the trappings of what she looked like and her ninja status. And I understand Betsy retains that, absolutely. I’m not taking anything away from what is great about Betsy. Again, I love Betsy. But to the people who aren’t die-hard Betsy fans, some of them are more interested in seeing Kwannon because that’s what they’re expecting.

And I know some Betsy fans would say that’s because she’s Captain Britain. I think they were more interested in seeing Kwannon than they were in seeing the “X-Men Disassembled” version of Psylocke as well. I still think it’s an extremely positive thing that we made her Captain Britain. I stand by it. And again, I know that’s not what you want me to say either, but I still stand by it and I stand by those books. I edited Excalibur for many issues of it, and I’m extremely proud of those issues. It was then taken over by Sarah Brunstad and she oversaw the rest of Excalibur and then the other two series. And she does great work as well. And it was a pleasure to work with Tini Howard and she does great stories for us.

So I stand behind the work we did. I wish that they had gone over better. I mean, with all books, there are things you could have done better. So I’m sure there are things we could have done better. And I’m not going to litigate those things here. I’m not going to enumerate things that I wish we had done right now. But I do stand by the work we did. It was what we did in the moment and I’m proud of it.

X-Men Monday #217 – Steve Foxe Talks Betsy Braddock

AIPT!: Steve Foxe was up for answering a few X-Fan questions about Dark X-Men #1 and what comes next (even in the distant future). Steve’s always so thoughtful with his answers, so you’re in for a treat. Let’s get started.

AIPT: Finally, it’s become something of an X-Men Monday tradition for you to tease X-projects on the distant horizon (Dark X-Men was teased in December 2022 and then again in March 2023). SO, for all the curious — and patient — Betsy Braddock and Rachel Summers fans hungry for information, what can you say about this juicy nugget from Gerry Duggan’s X page?

Steve: Gerry who? Sorry, I have no idea what this is referring to.

I kid, I kid, though Gerry did tease this PRETTY early compared to publishing plans. What I can say is that neither character appears in Dark X-Men, though I am writing both… and not in the same place. (They are NOT splitting up, so don’t start harassing me!)

I’d guess we have a few months still before I can say anything more concretely here — and a few X-surprises BEFORE then that no one’s going to guess, like my chance to finally write one of my lifetime favorites and a story involving a character I got asked about quite a bit last winter…

The Hellfire Gala/Fall of X Discussion

Spoilers: Emma and Xavier wants Kamala to reveal herself as a mutant as a political move for mutantkind. Kamala is reborn, and Hope explains that she's a hybrid between a mutant and an Inhuman. Xavier reveals that the Terrigen mist suppressed the awakening of her mutant powers. She is given a costume and gala attire. At the ball, she feels uncomfortable and refuses to reveal herself to the world.

The treehouse is under attack, and Cyclops leaves to check it. Irene and Mystique have an argument and leave the party. The Avengers receive an emergency call from Captain America and leave the party. Rogue tags along. Jean announces that she and Scott are leaving the X-Men, and that Synch and Talon are the new leaders. All candidates are elected, but Nimrod descends from the sky, killing everyone except Juggernaut, who is thrown off the building with Jean since she took the blunt.

Iceman faces Nimrod. Illyana tries to teleport everyone out, but her powers fail. Nimrod kills Bobby, and Jean attacks him using Juggernaut as a bullet. The Stark Sentinels arrive. Dr. Stasis and Karima arrive through a gate, revealing that Stasis sabotaged the Krakoan medication. He demonstrates its effects on humans at the gala, causing them to turn against each other, explaining that he wants mutants off the Earth.

Moira arrives and attacks Jean with a blade imbued with Blightswill. Xavier surrenders to them and asks the X-Men to stop attacking. Stasis and Moira reveal that if mutants don't leave, they'll kill one human for each mutant and escalate the numbers until humanity is wiped out. Xavier agrees to send the mutants away from Earth and sends a global message for everyone to enter the gates around the world. However, some mutants with psychic training aren't affected by his message.

Curse is furious with Xavier and Illyana, and a group including Marrow, Mary, Dani, and Dust drag her through the gate. Exodus pushes the Five through another gate. Meanwhile, Mother Righteous is performing a spell to trap one of Krakoa's islands in a magical lantern, seemingly where mutants who passed through the gates are headed.

Dying, Jean talks to Firestar and tells her to be the mutant fighting from within Orchis. They devise a plan for Stasis to believe Firestar was a traitor recruited before joining the X-Men in the last election, and the other mutants will believe it too. Angelica is supposed to save any mutants left around the world. If anything goes wrong, they should blame Beast, and people will believe it automatically.

Jean says her farewells to Scott and asks him to be strong. She says goodbye to Logan and tells him to seek revenge. He kills many Orchis members. Emma Frost and Lourdes make everyone hold hands and teleport to the Hellfire Club NY Chapter. Lourdes has been hit and dies. The gates are hacked and closed for good. Back at the gala, the humans want to leave as news spread that no one survived the event. Stasis orders soldiers to kill them, and they do so in front of Xavier. Moira tries to kill him, but Xavier asks for help, and Rogue arrives and rips Moira in half.

During the escape, Rogue distracts the Sentinels, and Xavier finds out that he can't locate the minds of the mutants he sent through the gates. He had induced them to go to Arakko, but they never arrived; they're dead. He falls to the ground crying, and Rogue is left stunned. Xavier tells her to leave and avenge them. Xavier is now the only mutant left in Krakoa. In the post-credits scene, Emma and Fisk are scheming, and Kitty leans against a gate and crosses to the other side, facing numerous Orchis soldiers.

Note: Betsy Braddock does not appear nor is she mentioned in the "Hellfire Gala" issue. Her whereabouts are unknown. Betsy is merely acknowledged in a promotional image released by Marvel's Twitter, showing that she has a reserved seat at the Summers family table.

June 2023 Sales Ranking: Tini Howard Goes Out With a Whimper

"Betsy Braddock: Captain Britain #5" landed at #136 in the June sales ranking, marking the end of Tini Howard's long reign as the lead writer for Betsy Braddock, and the sole steward of the character since October 2019. The latest release failed to make much impact among the general audience and only garnered attention among Betsy Braddock fans. This comes as no surprise, given that the character's stagnation under Howard's pen had been showing signs of weariness since the second year of Excalibur. While the rest of the X-line underwent numerous twists, events, and storylines, Betsy Braddock remained stuck in the same narrative since Excalibur #1. This undoubtedly alienated readers from both the character and Howard's comics. It's unfortunate that Howard, her associates, and her most devoted defenders on Twitter resorted to gaslighting, dismissing any critique of her work and the characterization of Betsy Braddock as trolling, even when the criticisms were valid and well-articulated. Let's hope for better years ahead for Betsy Braddock. Long may she reign.

Betsy Braddock: Captain Britain #5 Spoilers

Spoilers: In Braddock Manor, Captain Britain and S.T.R.I.K.E. gather and recruit the help of Faiza Hussain. Betsy explains that as the wielder of Excalibur, Faiza has a sacred connection to the British lands. The S.T.R.I.K.E. members then go over their plan to invade Morgan Le Fay's Castle.

In the pocket dimension, Brian confronts the Fury and is stopped from killing him by Rachel. Rachel states that they still need Fury. Brian and Rachel return to Braddock Manor and join the others.

S.T.R.I.K.E. puts their plan into action, with each member being responsible for a different part of the plan. Tom and Vicki face off against the Akkaba Coven's acolytes, Kevin rescues Micromax, and Wisdom and Alison are tasked with spying on Morgan. Wisdom loses his temper and gets a bit violent with the Coven's operatives. Betsy coordinates everyone telepathically, while Rachel embarks on her own mission with Brian and Meggan. As the S.T.R.I.K.E. members complete their missions, Betsy decides to confront Morgan Le Fay directly. Morgan's servants trap Betsy with power-suppressing collars infused with Blightswill. Betsy tries to convince Morgan to give up a war on British soil, as it would only harm the land.

Meanwhile, Rachel, Brian, and Meggan visit Infuri the Everforge and make a proposition to the Furies: to give them the war that Morgan couldn't provide, thus having the Furies fight the Doombots sent by Dr. Doom to protect Morgan.

Betsy reveals to Morgan that Blightswill can suppress her mutant powers, but not her powers as Captain Britain: strength, speed, and the Starlight sword. Betsy manages to free herself and asks Morgan once again if she truly wants to be connected to Britain, to which Morgan agrees. At that moment, Faiza uses Excalibur to reconnect Morgan to British soil. Morgan appears ecstatic to be able to hear the land once again.

The next day, Betsy, Rachel, and the rest of the family attend an interest fair at Braddock Academy, which has been reopened by Brian. Betsy receives a call from Tony Stark and explains what happened with the Doombots and Morgan. The family gathers, and Brian explains that he will dedicate himself to Braddock Academy now. Eventually, Betsy receives a call for help from the Captain Britain Corps and sets off to assist them with Rachel by her side, reaffirming her role as Captain Britain.

The final page is a letter written by Betsy, reflecting on her entire journey as Captain Britain, which reads more like a farewell letter from Tini Howard.

Some loose ends remain: Did the British people finally accept Betsy as Captain Britain? Is Lizzie Braddock still in a coma? What happened with the Sacred Timeline plot that didn't go anywhere?

May 2023 Sales Ranking: Avengers Can't Save "Captain Britain"

"Betsy Braddock: Captain Britain #4" landed at #198 in the sales ranking for May, barely holding on to the Top 200. According to Senior Editor Jordan D. White's remarks, the lackluster sales of Captain Britain came as a surprise, which is quite perplexing considering the previous failure of Knights of X. It became clear that placing another bet on a third relaunch, with Tini Howard once again as the writer, turned out to be a misfire that will have serious consequences for Betsy Braddock in the long term.

Betsy Braddock: Captain Britain #4 Spoilers

Spoilers: Betsy approaches Iron Man in New Jersey and enlists his help to attract the Fury with the Avengers. She believes that being in the company of the Avengers will improve her public image. At Braddock Manor, Rachel meditates and seeks the sacred timeline. Betsy returns to Braddock Manor, where the rest of the family is waiting to attend a charity ball sponsored by the Bradocks. The family makes a grand entrance on the red carpet, surrounded by photographers and journalists. Betsy announces that Rachel is her girlfriend and signs autographs for fans. Betsy and Rachel discreetly leave the event to meet up with the Avengers.

In the countryside, away from the public eye, Captain America (Sam), Iron Man, Scarlet Witch, Captain Marvel, Vision, Thor, and Black Panther join forces with Betsy to lure in the Fury with an illusion of Brian and defeat him once and for all. Betsy expresses her gratitude for the Avengers' help and asks Jamie to imprison Fury in a secure pocket dimension.

After the Avengers depart, Jamie teleports Morgan's Castle to British lands and claims he did it as a favor, apologizing for allowing her to be experimented on during his time as king. Morgan and Dr. Doom emerge from the castle, and Victor warns that any attempt to attack Morgan will be seen as an act of war against Latveria itself. Doom justifies it by stating that for the sake of the sorcery of the world, Morgan needs to stand on British soil.

Betsy becomes furious with Jamie, and everyone retreats back to Braddock Manor. The family regroups and contemplates new tactics to confront Morgan. After dismissing a direct confrontation, Betsy thinks it might be smarter to act from within: she wants Morgan to cooperate with Britain and depend on her, but they have to make her believe it's her own idea. Betsy enlists the help of S.T.R.I.K.E., with Wisdom, Lennox, and Alison joining them. Betsy will become a spy once again. Later, Brian decides to visit the pocket dimension and face the Fury alone.

X-Monday: Jordan D. White Admits Captain Britain's Failure and Lack of Plans for Betsy Braddock

In an exclusive interview with AiPT!, the senior editor of the X-Men line finally admitted defeat and acknowledged that Betsy Braddock: Captain Britain was cancelled after just 5 issues due to abysmal sales. What is unsettling is his decision to go public and state that there are still no plans for Betsy, when any reasonable person knew this book was dead on arrival, especially after the poor sales of Knights of X. Marvel's blind faith in Tini Howard and this direction for Betsy once again proved to be a mistake, further evidence the incompetence of those in charge.

AIPT: While we’re discussing solo series, X-Fan Jbenito said with Betsy Braddock: Captain Britain ending soon, could you give us some insight as to what may be next for our psychic butterfly and if we’ll be seeing her during Fall of X? We got a lot of Betsy questions, Jordan.

Jordan: I can’t give you too much right now, unfortunately. That was a book that I’m sad to say is ending at issue 5. We had hoped that it would continue and unfortunately it was not able to. So as a result, things that we had hoped to have happen with her in that book are off the table for now. I’m confident she will pop back up. We will weave her through our plans, but I have nothing I can reveal at this time, unfortunately.
