Chris Yost: An X-Forced Confession

Newsarama contacted him to talk about both Dark X-Men: The Confession and the latest arc of X-Force, “Not Forgotten”. Here are some excerpts concerning Psylocke and the future of the X-Books. By the way, if you're looking for some spoilers from today's X-Force #17: Boom Boom and Hellion both live. Surge's fate will be revealed next issue!

Newsarama: With Psylocke's return—will readers be seeing more of Betsy in X-Force or less of Archangel in all of his apocalyptic glory (Newsarama Note: Due to Warren and Betsy’s history together)?

Chris Yost: Psylocke is still getting herself established, so she's not going to be joining anytime soon... if she would even want to. And Archangel's in it for the long haul. X-Force satisfies the killer in him... watch him go off the rails in issue 18.

Newsarama: What can you tell us about the new arc starting in October? You know, the one before the big Bastion arc...the one with the name that'll spoil quite a bit.

Chris Yost: Everything will be revealed in San Diego, but it's probably the most ambitious thing Craig and I have done yet. We've been building to it for a few years now, but the time has come. If you've always thought the Black Queen should be a little more formidable, a bigger player... here you go.

Newsarama: Will there be a clear cut division in the X-Men via The Dark X-Men and X-Force in the near future?

Chris Yost: The end of Utopia X is a game changer. Matt Fraction has done an incredible thing. And yes, there will be divisions... X-Force cannot exist in the open.

I am not sure that X-Force would be an appropriate fit for Betsy at this stage in her development. She is a hardcore X-Woman, but I never saw her as embodying that bloodthirsty killer persona so pervasive in X-Force characters... She could conceivable make cameo appearances in X-Force, but I think she fits best as a regular and permanent member of the X-Men, as she had for decades.

Yup. I'd love to see Betsy having some cameo in X-Force, but not becoming part of the team. And definitely not being one of the mutants who get killed in this title...

But she could, you know, have some conversation with Warren and suspecting something is wrong with him, or getting concerned about X-23's coldness since the last time they saw each other (when X-23 was quite innocent and receptive), but without knowing about the X-Force. That would be cool.

Hi, Psychilde. That's a very good question, my friend. I noticed that the three claws point to directly to Wolverine, but we don't see his face. You are referring to the photo in this blog, right? I assume that's the one. I didn't see anything specific in the photo that pointed to Domino... I could be her, and it is possible that Wolverine could kill her being under the influence of some psionic force or a berzerker rage. I like Domino and don't want her killed at all; she was a welcome addition to the Sisterhood arc seen a few months ago. I actually thought it was X-23 that was stabbed in this photo, because of the hairstyle. Maybe Fsaker, CMX, or Luckystar can provide some insight here.

Best,
centurion

This image is Wolverine kissing Domino. It's the cover to "x-force: sex and violence" mini series. :)

One thing that seems to be true about Betsy in general is that she has been a largely sophisticated heroine throughout her history, one who fights gracefully and often in a chivalric manner, not the bloodthirsty, visceral attitude common place among the X-Force group.

In this sense, the semblance of her original "Englishness" still lives in the Asian body, which was strongly accentuated in Claremont's portrayal of Bets, especially in his recent but now defunct New Exiles.

Someone proposed an in interesting question a month or two ago about whether Betsy's accent was still English or she acted with "English" tendencies and manners in Kwannon's body. I thought about that and asked whether this was true in her recent portrayals. I have seen this strongly in Claremont's depiction of the character, but less emphasized in most of the others, including Fraction.

Betsy has often fought her foes to "defeat" not necessarily kill them, which supports the argument that she wouldn't be a good match for X-Force right now, that is, unless writers develop her to fit well into that persona.

Anonymous (8:45PM) post :). That's interesting. It does seem like Wolverine is kissing someone.

She really needs to get away from uncanny. There are far too many characters in the team, and Emma and Scott get the most coverage anyway.

I think she might end up being a bit blood thirsty in her limited series but yes on the whole i think she is more of an honourable warrior than a thug. Putting her in X-force gives her much more exposure and importance though so aslong as it didnt ruin her character it could be good for her.
