Uncanny X-Men #512 Variant Cover - Back to the 80's

Newsarama has released the variant cover to Uncanny X-Men #512. This 80's variant is part of Marvel's 70 years anniversary celebrating the coolest and most controversial fashions, music and cultural quirks from the last seven decades. The art features Psylocke, Rogue, Storm and Dazzler in such fashion! Does anyone know what's Psylocke 80's reference? I've read Boy George or Annie Lennox, still not sure. Also, we still don't know the artist's name. I like it!

they all look hideous, but the psylocke should have definitely been british and been perfect for the four australian team girls. does marvel ever think hard about anything they do?

So annoyed that Kwannon's body is on a cover representing the 80s. During this line-up, Betsy's body was on the team. I had started buying again during the Sisterhood article (which was totally lackluster) when I learned that Psylocke would reappear... in hopes that Fraction and Marvel would possibly fix the totally unnecessary Kwannon retcon. After seeing what a fall Uncanny has taken from the days I recall with Alan Davis, Chris Claremont and Marc Silvestri, and the irritation that Marvel will continue to prop a sex symbol ninja that bares no resemblance (in character or appearance) to the complex, dichotomous character that was Psylocke (a proper, regal lady on the surface who could be deadly if provoked... such as with Sabretooth during Mutant Massacre and Inferno, with the Magistrates when she and Colussus interrogated them and she was going to telepthaically kill them had he not intervened, etc.)... I will almost certainly go back to not spending any money at all on Marvel Comics. They really seem to suck now. I guess I have my childhood nostalgia to hold on to.

I think you're taking the cover a bit too seriously, its just meant to be a bit of fun.

*laughs at Dazzler*

i agree with everything you said rahchis. Fraction's idiotic sisterhood story actually made me stop being a fan of Psylocke in the asian body completely. if he was trying to do anything but piss off half of the fans who have wanted british betsy to return he completely failed.

This art is horrible.

Omg, British Betsy fans are not going to be happy when they see what Fraction does to her this week!

SPOILERS!!!

Dazzler goes all "Kamihamihah!" on British Betsy, destroying half of her face!

Then Betsy returns to the Asian Body...

...and finally, she's apparently still a Telekinetic!

Fraction must DIE!

I am happy she's back to her Asian body...But I thought Betsy would definetely be a telepath by the end of the arc regardless of which body she would end up in,Fraction did say that he intended to simplify her... :-(

Not the greatest cover ever, but hey, at least she IS in the cover. And it's nice seeing the Outback X-Ladies reunited again, even if it's just in this cover...

As for Psylocke becoming Asian again, from the spoilers I've read it seems that she CHOSE to kill off the British body (although I wonder if she did it because she prefers Kwannon's body or if it's because her original body had half of its face destroyed by Dazzler).

At least now we know she's happy with the body she's in. As for her powers, it would be nicer if she was a telepath again; on the other side, the X-Men are quite needing a telekinetic right now, with Rachel in space and Hellion counting his hours to die because of the Leper Queen's evil deeds. And Dodson is making her a new uniform, so as long as it's not another buttfloss ninja suit, YAY!!

Not a fan of the art on this new cover either... Also, it is anachronistic to place Asian Betsy on the cover when British Betsy was Psylocke for most of the 80s. Someone erroneously placed the Asian on there or did they? I am surprised they didn't depict British Betsy on the cover...

I am wondering if Asian Psylocke's inclusion on the cover of the UXM 511 variant is a deliberate break in historical continuity? Maybe Marvel thought that few would remember Psylocke in her British body and that the Asian Psylocke is what they hope would be the definitive version of the character regardless of historical continuity in Psylocke's life?

Take care, everyone

Dodson did not say he was making her a new uniform, he just said she wouldn't be in the butt-floss costume. Also, he previously said that he would not be designing a new one. I have a horrible feeling she will stay in that Exiles costume... wouldn't surprise me after the outcome of 511. :-(

Selene said...

Damn.I would prefer the Hand outfit anyday to the New Exiles monstrosity. :-(

Well, I love her New Exiles outfit! I just think that, if she's going to stick with it, it would need some modifications, otherwise it would look a lot like Emma's outfit, except purple and black and without a cape. Oh, and it also needs an "X" symbol in it, since she's now a X-Woman again, after all.

As long as her Utopia outfit is neither the Hand buttfloss suit, nor the abomination she wore in the end of the 90s (which included a bandana), I'm fine with it.

I'm with FSaker. I loved the New Exiles outfit, too.

This is a fun, tongue in cheek cover about 80s culture. To my mind, Psylocke just looks like a typical New Wave fan, the jacket with the rolled up sleeves and thin tie being fashionable at the time. I wouldn't have categorised her as looking like either Boy George or Annie Lennox.

FWIW,the Rogue costume seems to me like a reference to the little remembered Jamie Lee Curtis movie, Perfect, that was popular for about five minutes in 1985. It's silly but fun.

Shut up. I like her in the Asian body. It works better for her. In the caucasian body she looks like evry other bimbo in the marvel universe. Face it the asian quality makes her unique and pretty kick ass. Go be by yourselves and just shut up.

woo for psylocke's return to mainstream! she's my fav x-man and with the best personality next to emma frost.

I am glad she's gaining some of her former powers...if only she had them shadow powers...woof
