Dark Avengers #8 Spoilers

Utopia • Chapter 5

Spoilers: In Vegas, Dani seeks Hela and hopes to make a deal with her. Back in San Francisco, the Dark X-Men deal with Simon Trask, destroying him and the last of his bio-sentinels. At the H.A.M.M.E.R. headquarters in Alcatraz, Cloak and Dagger begin to have second thoughts about their actions, and Osborn orders his Avengers to get back to NY. Under the sea, Psylocke and Madison Jeffries manage to intall some devices on a huge piece of rock. Back to Alcatraz, Dark Beast and Weapon Omega are about to use the Omega Machine, when they realize that all their prisoners are gone. Turns out Mindee had led the X-Foce there, while Magik brought them back in safety. A battle is ensued, and the Dark X-Men are called. At Graymalkin, Cyclops learns the X-Club's mission was a success and gives them the order to "rise". In Alcatraz, the Dark X-Men are about to attack X-Force, but Emma Frost and Namor both betray them siding with the heroes once again. After realizing what's going on, Cloak and Dagger join the real X-Men too, and soon all of them are teleported out. Meanwhile, a huge island rises up out of the sea, at the San Francisco bay. Cyclops gathers all mutants and tells them that Emma and Namor are on their side and will explain it later. Scott gives a press conference and states that people wanted them out of the US, so they've left, after rejecting Osborn's programs against mutants and Trask's hate crimes. Osborn learns of his failure and orders his Avengers to bring Namor's head and Emma's heart.

Wow. So Cyclops' plan is to bring all mutants to an island isolated from the humans? LOL.

OOOH...The island! Is that the old Hydrobase from the Avengers? Was that off the coast of San Fran or was that on the other side of the country?

I think it's a fantastic plan, a nice slice between Xavier's plan (co-existence) and Maggie's plan (domination). In other words, "we tried, it didn't work, so we're gonna sit here, close enough to watch you, far enough away that you can't do a thing."

Sort of brilliant.

Namor's head and Emma's heart. Because that's what they think with or something?
Sounds a bit sexist.

YES!!!!

Yep :) Cyclops adopting a similar approach to mutant security like Magneto... Hmm, interesting. Does this mean that Xavier's dream is dead?

Mikey said...

Xavier's Dream died a long time ago IMO. Right around the Morrison run.

@Mikey - That's truly unfortunate, my friend. With Xavier's mind in upheaval, the X-Men still seeking to discover their identity and team purpose, and with all of the increasing human militancy against mutants (not to mention the mutant-mutant interneicine conflicts), I think you are right... Have you read any issue of X-Men Forever?

Best,

@Mikey - I posted this link on a previous thread on this blog, but I am not sure if you have seen this. This is an image of a rare Psylocke figure auctioned on Ebay a week ago:

I wonder why it wasn't put into large scale production?

Someone must REALLY love Betsy :) Look at the final auction price :)

$4,000 dollars for that. lol.

this story sucked. lame lame lame. i cannot wait until Fraction is gone. i would love to see how the next writer will fix all of this bull.

So Emma and Namor betrayed Osborn, eh? I expected that to happen, but it's still a nice surprise, and will definitely shake the Cabal's foundations.

But are there scans with Psylocke in this issue? How much does she appear in it?

FSaker said...

One more question: when Magik brought the prisoners back from Alcatraz, did that include Beast and Professor X (the real one, I mean), or are the two of them still imprisoned?

centurion said...

Good Questions, Fsaker! If Emma betrayed Osborn, I wonder if that means she will be back with the real X-Men?

I guess it makes sense, mutants are too vulnerable to leave in the open so having their own island can protect them but keep them on earth unlike Magneto's asteroid M. What the hell is this base though?

This issue didnt deliver at all for me, its completely anti climatic to where this has been building. Emma being in on it all along was not the way I wanted this to go down AT ALL, I know at the end I wanted her to make the right decision but i wanted a proper Dark X-men vs X-force, Cyclops vs Emma confrontation and this just didnt deliver that at all, I would have even been happy with Emma leaving the X-men for a while and staying with Osbourne and Namor, would have really established her outside the X-men world and given Betsy some panel time. Illyana was in it for 2 seconds, X-23 and Daken didnt get the awesome fight I was waiting for and would Logan really leave his son behind to Norman Osbourne if he was right there on the floor unconscious and Emma was there to help, makes no sense at all. If Dark Beast is dead then that is crap. We didnt even see Beast actually rescued.

Where the hell does this even fit in chronologically with X-force? seeing as Illyana replaced Vanisher as the teleporter it must be after they got back from Messiah War but if thats the case why is X-23 with them?

Bahh, well Iceman has a nice ass atleast ;P

If we cant have Betsy x Beast can we have Betsy x Madison? for the love of god anyone but Angel the sequel.

You know actually thinking about it, The X-men should just go back to being hidden, what's to stop another giant Sentinel or a nuke killing everyone now.

I would like to see Betsy with Beast or Betsy with Cyclops :) Betsy & Madision is an interesting pair. Cyke has a thing for telepathic women :) This makes Betsy eligible ;)

@FSaker, scans are up. As for Magik, they said all prisoners were brought back in safety, I guess it includes Beast and Xavier too, but there wasn't any confirmation.

@ Centurion, You think they haven't found their identity yet? Hmm....i might have to disagree... especially with what's happening. And yes i've been reading X-men Forever, only becuase i have a small amount of faith left in CC, but i'm slowly being let down. Thoughts?

I'm loving everything that Fraction is doing! This is the first time in a LONG time i'm proud of Uncanny. And for everyone that is upset that they didn't get their battles and the Emma/Scott showdown there's still two issues left, and Uncanny 515(?) is dealing with the aftermath!!!

Mikey said...

Oh also, thoughts on the Island? I think it's either Asteroid M or some version of it or Providence.

Francis said...

well maybe that's the Nation X lol

@Mikey, Hi. My vote is still out regarding the island concept. I guess I will have to wait and see how Cyclops' new idea develops. If the "peaceful" coexistence between mutants and humans isn't practical anymore, that doesn't mean that mutant segregation is more viable... I have a feeling the "new" island will be plagued with some of the same "old" problems occurring outside the island. I am hoping that is not the case, but if segregating some mutants from humans is the goal, then, well, we know what that has caused in the past... I guess the important question is whether Cyclops could do it differently than say Magneto? Even the "good" guys are invariably forced at times to restort to violence against their enemies.

As for X-Men Forever. I am enjoying it. I guess Wolverine really is dead... I remember Claremont stating that when characters die in this universe, death is permanent. I am waiting for Betsy to be brought into the book and be placed in a role of importance. Claremont could redeem himself by doing something with Bets that other writers like Fraction haven't done yet. Since Claremont seems to love Betsy, I doubt he would kill her off in XM Forever, but he would probably alter her physically to make her Asian using that magic/plastic surgery idea.

best,
centurion

Agreed, that's the main question. How will this be different than what's already been done? Cyclops now has the equivelant of a small comet smashing into earth with all of the mutants that will gather in nation x and He's actively seperated them from the main pop. How will everyone react.....again....

I like where it's going, i'm excited to see the perspective from someone actually in "Genosha" or "Asteroid M" or Nation X. Interesting

More than anything I'm excited to see where ALL of the X-books are going. What will the story lines look like now?

Re: X-Forever. I just wished CC would have given back story!!! What the hell happened in between them leaving asteroid M in X-men #3 and Forever #1. I understand he wanted to get the ball moving fast but come on. REALLY? I would have bought one or two more books that at the very least tells us where everyone went.

Mikey said...

@Francis. Hiya, yeah i know it's Nation X :P haha but i wanna know what it USED to be!

Okay...Bottom line, everything was one big plan made by Cyclops? After reading this issue,I have to say that I feel exactly the same way I felt about Secret Invasion.Utopia was another waste of money and time.

I am done with Fraction's run.
