Power up version To described. No thanks, I like to see Betsy's face a life giver. Looks too busy.

I skimmed Fried Bagels to see how Hill deals with Betsy losing Psylocke and it was yellow diarrhea. Not a tiny bit surprised by his horseshit. Betsy making a cameo on Fried Bagels was the only good part.

I've seen twitter comments about the issue already with things like Psylocke never written so good before fallen angels or they feel so sorry for Kwannon etc these people clearly are confused assuming Kwannon has always been Psylocke? I'm not tempted to read or support the series I'm open to eventually warming to Kwannon but not at the expensive of Betsy being further villainized or blamed for all of this. Its disgusting.

Actually, Fallen Angels is getting pretty good reviews. It's a 7.3 on IGN, same as Excalibur, and it's gotten the thumbs up from Newsrama, CBR and other independent reviewers. Some criticism has been leveled against the supposedly inconsistent artwork, but apart from that, it's been pretty much good reviews.

I really don't understand the need to pit these two women together, especially two fictional women.

randybear said...

Toffnut those reviews dont mean much and I didnt think Excalibur was as spectacular as everyone else did it was just okay not bad but not mind blowing. The art was the best part IMO. And the pitting of the two women is Marvel. Tini having Betsy say "I stole Kwannon's body" then Kwannon apparently self victimizing herself in Fallen Angels what sort of impression does that give to new readers other than "that bad white woman stole this POC womans life" with no other context. The older fans know Betsy was subjected to tons of abuse and manipulation over the years but now its simplified and implied it was all Betsy's decision to rip Kwannons body away from her.

The pitting of the two women is 100% because of some of Betsy’s fans. There are people who cant stop themselves from saying something negative about Psylocke II. It needs to be accepted that these two women are carving out new paths for themselves. Betsy won’t always come out in the most positive light but that’s okay. It’s okay to have a favorite character with some flaws and imperfections. It doesn’t mean Marvel or the people are doing her a disservice. Heck, most people have come to respected Captain Britain MORE because of the way she’s taking some responsibility for what happened.

X-Man said...

But that's probably why people are annoyed. The event happened without either of the women's consent. I just don't see how Betsy is responsible for anything especially since as I recall the swap happened in part because Kwannon's lover was trying to save Kwannon's life. Also considering Kwannon appeared on the scene claiming to be Betsy and disrupted her entire life and caused her friends to doubt her (not to mention took half her telepathic strength), I would think she would be the more likely choice to express guilt and responsibility (I'm not saying she is responsible, but that it would make more sense if she felt that she was).

Yes Unknown, the marvel editors and writers religious view the comments section of this blog and use it to shape and guide their plots. We are so influential.

That’s the beauty of it all, Randybear, they don’t! That’s why Excalibur and Fallen Angels are moving forward and getting positive reviews and acclaim and people are really digging what’s going on with both ladies. The ONLY time you see negative comments are from a subset of Betsy fans who feel the need to trash Psylocke II. It’s been petty and sadly, a little childish. Kwannon had her life stolen. She has a right to be angry. Is the anger misplaced? Debatable; but that’s part of the story. Betsy has regained her original body with a new purpose. Should she feel guilty about all the things that happened out of her control? Again, that’s part of the story. It’s doing both characters a justice they never had before.

I don’t think anyone read Excalibur #1 and said “man Betsy not having a butterfly effect of psychic knife really ruined my enjoyment of this book.” Again, the only people pitting the characters against each other and making it a bigger deal are certain fans.

If you say so! And both books aren't getting critically acclaimed I've seen both be equally praised and criticized by reviewers.

I think it is natural for Elizabeth to feel guilty for running around in Kwannon's body, even if it wasn't her choice. She LIVED in that body, did things in it, used it as a weapon, made love to men in a body that isn't hers. Should she feel guilty? Maybe, maybe not. But her being written to take the blame for the whole fiasco is a realistic, human approach.

Kwannon has every right to feel angry. I don't think it is clear to her at this point whether she should be angry at Betsy, or the circumstances. But, as it stands, Betsy is the ultimate reminder of the violation done against her.

Fans have a right to feel what they feel, and to side who they choose to side with. But I personally don't see it as a war. There's this dark, complex and tragic story happening between these two characters right now that could move their narratives forward in ways it has never been moved before, and I think that is a beautiful thing.

Reconciliation doesn't happen in one panel, but the journey these two women will take towards it can be quite the story, and we are its audience.

For me personally it's not Kwannon that's actually annoying me (yet). It's what the writers chose to do with her (seemingly). The name Psylocke was Betsy's even before the swap. I just want Kwannon to be her own person (Revanche was a fine name), not copy the name and outfit, and powers Betsy had for years. I also dont get how one woman can feel guilty, and the other angry when the same exact thing happened to both of them without any say on their part. They both had their life stolen and altered. The only difference is Kwannon is the one who showed up claiming to actually be Betsy and disrupted her whole life. Did Kwannon forget the event actually occurred because her lover was trying to save her life. If anything, Betsy was dragged (literally) into Kwannon's life and drama. I'm all for mixed feelings and emotions, but if Betsy is made out to feel guilt and Kwannon is upset with Betsy and made to be some "victim" (who happened to be a deadly assassin mind you lol), then of course Betsy fans will have a problem because it doesn't make any sense.I'm confused at how she got the name Psylocke if Betsy didnt give it to her? Cause if she just took it because she felt entitled to it, then yeah I'm gonna have a big problem with Kwannon lol. I'm hoping the real actual reason that Kwannon doesn't want to talk to Betsy is because she actually feels guilt herself and doesn't want to face her yet. If both women feel bad about what happened and come to realize it wasn't their fault, that will be great. If it is "Betsy did this" and "poor Kwannon", then I think Betsy fans have every reason to be annoyed with "Psylocke 2".

TBH, it is mostly from a business standpoint that Marvel chose to retain the visage that most people have come to associate with the name "Psylocke", and keep it that way because, a.) This is her most well-known version and b.) It avoids general public confusion regarding the character's past and future appearances in other media.

As a longtime ninja-locke fan, I personally would have preferred it if Kwannon got her own codename and powerset, but I do understand the decision behind keeping the name Psylocke attached to the asian version.

And, as an Elizabeth Braddock fan as well, I understand the concern that Betsy as a character possibly being much less popular due to the Captain Britain monicker never reaching the recognition of the Psylocke name - a name that was hers to begin with. But I have hopes that attaching Elizabeth to the CB name will actually prove to the best thing that has happened to her and the Cap't Britain name.

What happened is certainly very, very polarizing for Betsy fans, but looking at the long-term, this makes sense.

If i'm being honest, this is the most exciting development for either women in YEARS. And it also fixes the whole cultural appropriation issue.

It could be natural to feel guilt, but shouldn't that logic then apply for Betsy as well? If this is the angle the writers are going for, then shouldn't seeing Kwannon remind Betsy that was the ultimate violation to her body (or one of them sense she's had so many)?, Kwannon also turned that body into a weapon and considering what she did for an occupation probably killed in that body and probably made love in it as well. Again, in addition to that she came into Betsy's life and instantly attacked her, and claimed to be the real Elizabeth Braddock disrupting her life and causing everyone in Betsy's life to doubt her (with possibly the exception of Warren). The writers should remember that it was Betsy who was forcefully dragged into Kwannon's life (and violated) because she was looked at as just a means to save Kwannon from dying. I guess I still dont see how out of the 2 of them and their past, the writers thought Betsy was the one who should express guilt? Very puzzling to me lol.

Unknown you want Kwannon to be herself and get a code name right?

Unknown you want individual mutant powers for Kwannon not shared right?

Unknown you don't want her to be Psylocke ripoff for the sake of good diversity right?

Unknown you want Betsy fans to shut their traps about Kwannon Yellowface right?

Then stop being a shill for Marvel and their shameless branding tactics and get yo ass movin' to demand a life for Kwannon out of the shadow of Betsy and her origins.
