Brian Wood expands Psylocke's 'arsenal'

psycwave: "Hi Mr. Wood! You said in an interview that Psylocke might be using an array of "psychic weapons" aside from her knife the last time she used a psychic weapon was when she last used her telekinesis (Chris Claremont had her manifesting telekinetic bats and the like in New Exiles). So are these manifestations of new weapons shows of her now rarely used telekinesis or are the simply more telepathic feats similar to Quentin Quire?"

Brian Wood: "No bats, but yeah, telekinesis. Things that compliment her katana, expand her arsenal. You'll see this right away in issue #1."

I guess the editors are still letting the writer decide if Psylocke comes equipped with TK or not. What do you guys think? What new psychic weapons would you like to see Psylocke create?

Well in the taglines we were left with on that last article it seems Betsy will be using a Psychic Longbow... GROSS! Archers are like the new Vampire.

I'd be okay with psi-shuriken or maybe throwing daggers...

Chris said...

What are you talking about? Archers are BOSS. I'm so excited for that!

I think it's okay. Although I think Psylocke doesn't need telekinesis, it was never stated on panel or off-panel that she lost her telekinetic powers, so the writer isn't wrong for showing her using these powers.

She will probably be great, regardless of her powers. We have already seen Wood writing Psylocke (I'm talking about 616-Psylocke, of course, although he's also writing Ultimate-Psylocke) and I liked how she was written, so as long as he keeps portraying her the same way, she should be fine.

I was never a fan of the pink flamey sword, so I hope that does not come back. I like Psylocke better when she uses her powers to enhance her hand to hand comabat skills, attacking from a distance with a longbow doesnt seem her style. I also think it's starts to get confusing for some writers to show her using TK and for others not to.

I kind of wish he had used this idea with Rachel, I think she could use a couple of tricks to make her more interesting.

But I'm still very interested in this series and to see where it goes. And if he let's Betsy shoot a psychic arrow through Hawkeyes face, all will be forgiven.

Did I miss where she expanded her arsenal in the first issue? I don't recall seeing her create anything other than her psy-blade.

Awesome! Glad to see the tk addressed. She loved flying too, but I guess it's alright she has a motorcycle instead.

Nic, this article isn't about Uncanny XForce, it's about Wood's upcoming XMen series, which doesn't debut until March.

FSaker said...

April, not March. Unless Marvel changes its release date to March (and personally, I'd really love that!!).

Nic said...

Gotcha. Thanks. There is so much Psylocke news that I am getting confused! Glad to have this problem though.

randybear said...

Read the whole article next time, Nic! lol

Notes:

Humphries writes Uncanny Xforce
Wood writes Adj XMen (aka X-Women)

A bow reminds me of Dani Moonstar, I do not think it suits Psylocke best...but i will wait to see in what circumstances this will be fit.

Psylocke82 said...

Psylocke with TK...YES! I've always liked Psylocke with telekinesis! She was written as not using it because she "didn't want to"...so dumb. She's awesome with whatever powers she's using, but a bow and arrow really is Dani Moonstar-ish. Let our girl Betsy step up all the way and take the throne! Let her be a match for any of the Marvel Universe!

Personally I prefer her more without TK, as I don't think she really needs it when her telepathy is being written to the max of its capabilities. BUT if they are going to use it, I'd just prefer if there was continuity between books in terms of what she is doing with her powers...I'll be honest, I was not a fan of the last run that Wood did. I'll try this one out, but given I dislike more characters on this book than I like, he'll need to pull something amazing off to keep my interest anyway.

Call me a stuck in the mud, but I just am not a fan of Psylocke with telekinesis. Maybe it's because I'm a fan from way back in the Original Body days, I don't know. To me, TK just makes her kind of gimmicky, and was part is the reason she was written out of the series in the 90s. Granted, they tried to make her TK unique with the psi-katana etc, but it still just felt old to me.

Of course, I'm sure there are plenty of fans who feel the same about her having only telepathy, as there are a ton of telepaths (probably more than there are telekinetics, to be honest) in the X-Universe. That's just where she shines for me. I don't need and new psionic weapons to enjoy the character. Just give me a plain ol' psi-blade and a lot of sarcasm!

I agree, I don't like Psylocke and TK. I think the only time it was used well was in the mini series when she used it as kind of an extension of her martial arts abilities. Seeing Psylocke fly was weird, didnt seem natural somehow, and the TK weapons thing seems gimmicky. And I agree with those who said the longbow thing reminds them of Moonstar, it was the first thing I thought of as well.

I like it when Psylocke uses her psi powers in clever ways. But overall, still glad she is in the group and curious to see how ti all works out.

I agree with most. Telekinetic energy weapons are tacky and silly. If she must have telekinesis, then write it the way it was in her 4-issue mini-series. I hate TK katana and will loathe any other energy weapons.

Unknown said...

Just when we got her a real costume, this bullcrap now comes along. Please rethink it Wood. Sounds like a hot mess in the making.

FSaker said...

I guess her TK powers won't be overused, anyway. Since both Psylocke and Rachel have telepathy and telekinesis, the writer will likely try to show the difference in the way how each girl uses these powers.

Rachel will probably use these powers in the conventional ways (psychic scanning, mind intrusions, forcefields, TK blasts), while Psylocke will probably (and hopefully) just use them as an extension of her fighting skills (psi-knife and TK weapons). One will be the powerhouse, other will be the fighter.

Brian Wood did a great job with Betsy in his X-Men run (sure, not as great as Remender's, but can anyone ever be as great?), so I trust in his ideas for her.

Lol, I'm disheartened by the negative TK comments. I've been an avid fan of Betts since the Kwannon body swap thing, which many readers hated, but I thought that added depth to the character...a staple in her life. BUT, I do prefer with TK. I have to agree...her using her telekinesis like she did in her mini-series was best. I like her flying, but that's as weird as Warpath flying around. Remender wrote her using her powers in awesome ways...like how she kept Gateway alive to have him teleport them to the future. That would be cool. Having psionic weapons like Quire would be dumb.

Psylocke82,

You better be careful, honey! Kwannon is a four letter word 'round these here parts.

I get where Psylocke82 is coming from actually. I like Psylocke with TP and secondary TK. It all comes down to how it is written.

And one good thing about her TK katana is that she can use it without causing death or serious injury.

Tazirai said...

As a non fan of her being TP/TK, If they use it properly im for it. Using it to enhance her agility, and reflexes works for me. Don't turn her into a power house. There's SOOOOOOO many bland powerhouses now, there's almost no need for teams. I loved it when Teams powers actually complimented each other, now they each are their own little teams, unless written stupidly.
One of the Powers I'd always wish she had was Technopathy. It seemed to be a far more organic expansion of her Telepathy. She can battle machines and organics with the same flare. In all my Fan works for her, That's how Ievolved her. She's also still white lol.

Didn't she use a psychic sledgehammer in her British body during her first stint as an x-man (after the Mutant Massacre storyline)?

In Wood I trust

walteion96 said...

i hope the writers agree on one power set,so if wood make new weapons for psylocke ,sam should use them.

the psychic weapons i wanna see are:
1)-a psychic rope (more like wondar woman's but pink)
2)-a psychic shield (more like captain america's but on the shape of a butterfly)
30- psychic ninja stars.

wait ,wouldnt it be cool if psylocke turns into a vampire ?!!she would be a psychic vampire ,jubilee can turn her. i think she would be awesome...

walteion96 said...

anyway i hope the TK katana is back because i like it & it would be awesome to see her using it.

the first thing i think of when i hear the word "psylocke" is the TK katana ,then the butterfly ,then the thong ,then purple hair.

Australian Outback said...

Please, no vampire Psylocke with Wonder Woman rope and butterfly shield, lol. Cute but way too cheesy. Sorry. :)

Australian Outback said...

I don't mind the idea of a psychic sledgehammer, as mentioned by Max Tan above.

walteion96 said...

Hahah vampire psylocke rocks!

Australian Outback said...

I want a Juggernaut Dark Phoenix Psylocke with Infinity Gauntlet after a power switch with Wanda and Xavier's brain for back-up, plus Ms. Marvel powers and both a death seed and life seed planted in her at the same time. Then she has a baby that gets transported to the future and gets brough back within half an hour as a fully grown Psylocke doppelgänger only her face is half British and half Japanese like Two Face, and she has the power to eat worlds, so it becomes a 69 issue crossover with the Avengers and Archie. Take that, Shadow King.

That's so Cool, it would be awesome, LOL

treysome said...

yeah not a fan of the TK I loved her as a TP ninja

walteion96 said...

Treysome

Her telekinesis can be fun too if used the right way.
It would be Cool if (sometimes & not always) she use it to enhanced her physical skills & to great psychic weapons (weapons that affect the physics world, like her katana) [because her telepathy is worthless if she faced a non-human enemy, like a sentinel or a machine]

As long as she doesn't fly, release blasts, create force fields & move large objects ,I'm okay with it.

Hopefully her TK will be low & will be and secondary power, the main focus will be on her TP. Like the last x-men run, she only used her TK once [When she created a TK katana] answer was TP the whole series, the same thing will happen here.

Lol lots of spelling mistakes ^^

Auto correction....

the katana and the daggers were both always made out of Psylocke's powers, it isn't like the katana was telekinetic and the daggers were telepathic, whatever the blade looks like it was just always made out of telepathy if that is what she had and telekinesis if that was her power instead. I suppose Wood is just saying "yeah telekinesis" because no matter how often marvel explains that psylocke's blades are made out of psychic energy people keep creating this artificial idea that the sword is telekinetic and the dagger is telepathic. BOTH weapons have BOTH powers if Psylocke has both powers. NO writer has ever said that the sword is represents TK and the dagger TP. all of her blades (and now arrows) are generally made out of whatever power she has, they are made of the same energy.

However since gaining TK the only time her knife/sword ever cut human flesh was when she was fighting wolverine in the sisterhood arc in uncanny. even when she had just TK her swords and daggers could fry minds rather than mutilate people.

It just bugs me that people create artificial definitions for her powers. She did seem to prefer creating a sword when she was limited to TP, but that was only in the beginning, she also created TK daggers, and like I said her TK swords always had a TP effect.

That being said, If she doesn't use mental projections anymore I worry she'll go down the old road to losing the awesome butterfly effect.
