X-Men '97 S01E02 "Mutant Liberation Begins" Spoilers & Art

Spoilers: When Magneto is compelled by the United Nations to stand trial, a group of anti-mutant rioters challenge his resolve and storm the courthouse. In the ensuing clash, the X-Men intervene to quell the riots, with Morph using his shapeshifting abilities to take on the forms of Lady Deathstrike, Colossus, and Psylocke.

Okay now. The art is actually better than the 90s series. Still not as sleek as What If..., but I am pleasantly surprised!

Speaking of Psylocke, does anyone know with certainty if it is Elizabeth or Kwannon on the new, upcoming, Alaska-based team? In the art, I cannot tell. The woman’s features don’t look specifically East Asian or Northern European. The hair is dark (cannot tell if it’s black or very dark purple, which usually signals Kwannon. However, the hair is wavy and voluminous, which usually signals Betsy.

I’m not sure how I feel about the “From The Ashes” relaunch. I hope the mutants do not go back to begging H. sapiens to be tolerated after having their own sovereign nation.

@Rahsaan she has black hair, so most likely Kwannon. Rumor has it Marvel has plans for Betsy, but not necessarily on the X side of things

X-MEN 97 was great! I'm pretty sure we'll see Betsy this season. Great teaser!

@Rahsaan: The Psylocke in the upcoming Alaska-based team is Kwannon. I'm quite surprised they gave her such a Revanche-esque costume. Without the purple hair and the Jim Lee-inspired thong, she just looks like a generic dark-haired girl now.

@lucas @Nate, thanks. I actually dig the new uniform for Kwannon. It looks like street clothes which I prefer, like most ot the team wore in the late 80s up until Fall of The Mutants. I also hate the Hand uniform on her and Betsy, so I’m happy she is wearing something more practical and stylish. She does look generic to me m, because I could not tell who she was and the fact that both characters manifest the same power signature which was Betsy’s doesn’t help matters. It would be great if they further distinguish Kwannon by giving her a unique power signature along with her new outfit. As for Bets, here is to hoping she ends up in a great title/book and with a new, more becoming uniform!

One thing I hope these new writing teams continue is the deep scifi angle that Hickman took with the Krakoa era. Even if that society no longer exists, I still hope the mutants continue to feel more scifi as they did in his run up to Inferno.

This was a passion project for the EP while I'm glad it's getting good praise let's hope season 3 and beyond can maintain it without him.

@Rahsaan
I prefer this new costume also. I just hope it gets drawn by a different artist soon. I like the artist when they've done books centering on kid/teen characters but for a group of adult X-Men they all look too young. Especially Twinkclops.

Well, I wouldn't mind if that were true, but... it wouldn't make much sense to have her uniform be pink and purple when she's still Captain BRITAIN, would it? That'd be like presenting, for instance, a "Captain Spain" with a black and blue uniform instead of yellow and red, or a "Captain Brazil" with a purple uniform instead of green, yellow and blue...

I'm not doubting your information, by the way; I just think that this idea is weird. Then again, it wouldn't be the first weird decision from Marvel when it comes to Betsy, so... who knows? At least most people who miss Betsy's time as Psylocke would likely appreciate the return of her signature colors.

We've seen Kwannon's new look in previews have you seen it yet? Hoping Betsy does get something good cause the new looks so far aren't the greatest

That's asian Betsy cameo. Lets not forget this picks up when the original animated series left.

Betsy ain't gonna pop up at least till now. It's Kwannon in Alaska. She had to go there to get a new costume and get out the coochie-cutter. Props to the writer clever to make it happen.

Generic? Whaddya mean. The costume has the Revanche mark that's all it needs. It was Kwannon's identity when she launched in the X-Men. In promos in comic sites looks fresh and snazzy. Tell me low key you don't wanna get her back into the butt thong I'll eat my pigtails

I'd love if she relinquished Captain Britain & maybe swapped titles with Brian or got a new codename altogether.

However, if Betsy just changed the CB outfit to be her signature colors of pink, blue, purple I'd take that at least.

Betsy has never been one to follow "rules", I don't see why she'd start now lol.

She can save people and also wear whatever she wants lol.

I hope we see it soon, I'm also glad Kwannon got a new costume.

Now if they gave Kwannon her own power signature that'd be great.

From the first two X-men 97 episodes, it's now clear on why Morph has returned in the series: to be an Easter egg. I think it's nice for the animators to do that but hopefully we'll see the real characters in the series and Morph will have an interesting story.

If you're talking about the animated series, that's neither Betsy nor Kwannon, it's Morph shapeshifting into Psylocke (who, in this universe, should indeed be Betsy if it's following the 1990s animated series).

The comments about Kwannon are related to the new X-Men teams that will debut in the comic books after the Krakoan Age is over; one of them will be led by Cyclops and have Kwannon as one of its members. From what I saw, Betsy isn't in any of these teams, but many X-Men are absent from them as well (such as Storm, Jean Grey, Colossus, Professor X himself and so on, though it seems that Storm and Jean may get their own solo books) and apparently there will be other new X-books yet to be announced (such as X-Force and X-Factor), so maybe Betsy will be in one of them (whether she'll still be Captain Britain or present a new codename altogether, that's something that remains to be seen).

Personally, I'm a little sad that she won't be in Gail Simone's book, though. I loved how Gail wrote her female characters in Birds of Prey (where they had depth, had a vulnerable side but still managed to kick ass), and Betsy would feel at home with Wolverine, Rogue, Gambit, Nightcrawler and Jubilee - all of them being longtime friends of hers.

But on the other hand, one of Betsy's best teams ever was Remender's UXF, and back then she had no prior relevant connections to either Fantomex or Deadpool, so maybe having her hang out with some unusual teammates could be good to her.

I watched both episodes last night. I did enjoy them. My one complaint is the 90s art. The art is substantially better than it was in the original series, but I really wish they went with more modern art. For season three, i hope they do a time jump or at least give is modern art. It can still be set in the 90s, but I don’t need that art for nostalgia. 😅

I think the action and characters would look so much better if they go with the artist(s) from What If…
