Marvel Confirms Betsy Braddock to Star in New X-Men Book

Marvel Comics has officially confirmed that Betsy Braddock, alongside Rachel Summers, will be taking center stage in a forthcoming X-Men title set to debut in the highly anticipated "FROM THE ASHES" era. While details about the new series are still under wraps, fans can now rest easy knowing that Betsy Braddock will usher in the new era, emerging from the ashes.

Kinda wish it was without Rachel, but I'll give it a shot.

I have nothing against Rachel, but don't think she & Betsy are a good fit.

I also think the powersets might be too similar, unless Rachel displays fire-like Phoenix abilities which would work in a "from the ashes" story I guess lol.

Definitely glad Betsy is getting a book though.

Maybe a new writer can make them work as a couple, because their dynamic under TH was pretty boring, with Rachel acting as Betsy's emotional support pet 24/7.

Did you notice Marvel is not calling her Captain Britain?

X-Man said...

I did notice that, but not getting my hopes up lol.

They also mentioned Kwannon by name recently

I wouldn't mind them keeping Foxe as a writer, he writes both Betsy and Rachel in character and with a more interesting dynamic in the info page alone than TH did in a whole miniseries

Yes, it's kinda curious that they mentioned her by her name instead of calling her "Captain Britain". But like X-Man said, I won't expect much from this fact.

About Betsy and Rachel being on the same team, I guess whether it will work depends on the dynamics they'll have. Yes, they were kinda boring together during the Krakoan era (which they were barely a part of), but they were also pretty fun to read during Claremont's UXM run in the Reload era (Betsy fighting dino-Rachel, then we had them friendly shading each other in the House of M arc, then both women combined their TK abilities to deflect the attack from the Shiar assassins trying to kill Rachel...).

The similar powers shouldn't be a problem; after all, Morrison's New X-Men run had Professor X, Jean Grey, Emma Frost AND the Cuckoos (plus Quentin Quire as a villain) and even though all of them are telepaths, none of them felt redundant throughout the run. I guess that, as long as the writer (whoever they are) focuses on the particularities of how each of them uses their power (Betsy focusing on stealth and close-range combat, Rachel showing her Askani skills) and that their interactions don't revolve entirely on them being lovers (a mistake that many comic book writers often do when they have a team where two superheroes are dating each other), then we should be fine.

I was just thinking they had more chemistry in that Claremont run than they ever had under TH. If they're written that way, they'd be even more believable as a couple and as team mates

I wonder if this is the new team that Marvel said it would be announced in November and then never did announce:

As for Elizabeth and Rachel, they have been on multiple teams together. Not just Claremont’s, but also Brian Wood’s all-woman X-Men run. And at one point, that team also included Monet who is also telepathic and telekinetic (with less raw psychic power than the former two) and I recall one scene where all three used their psychic abilities in concert.

I pray to the heavens that she is no longer the Captain of Britain.

And while we all want to see Bets’ jettison that Union Jack armor, I am even more concerned about Rachel’s attire. That woman has got to be the takiest X-Man ever! I pray to the heavens that Rachel actually gets a good look this time around. Outside of Leah Williams’ X-Factor and Brubaker’s Uncanny: Rise & Fall of The Shi’ar Empire, Rachel is always a fumpy, hot-ass mess. So much so that during the all-women run, Monet canonically shaded her lack or style by calling her “Trenchcoat” so many times until Rachel dropped the coat which then made her already tacky uniform look even tackier. Can Jumbo Carnation please get this lady all the way together?!!

Amen and while at it Jumbo give something Betsy fashionable to wash down the grotesque Captain Kettle duds.

I'm vibing at the sound of plain Betsy Braddock. The Captain Britain got no business with her. Worst stories worst sales worst style and everything while in it. I say good riddance and buh bye.

@Rahsaan Brevoort said that this New X-Men teaser was a post-Krakoa Jordan D. White project that got cancelled when Marvel decided to replace him with Brevoort.

randybear said...

That plus the general audience STILL thinks Peggy Carter is Captain Britain and refuse to care or see tbe difference. Betsy as CB was such a mess that Marvel half ass shoe horned.

Rahsaan said...

@Nate, thanks. I just looked this up and saw that Brevoort expanded even more. Apparently, the book was supposed to be pulling about some AoA character(s). Reading that, I’m glad he canceled. Can these people stop recycling the same played out stuff? Yes, AOA was good for its time, but we’re still repeatedly using that and other long dead story arcs to try to make fetch happen decades later? So hackneyed. He made the right decision to axe that plan.

kids i told yall pretty in pink n purple comin soon

FSaker said...

@lindsay, I am indeed looking forward to the "pink and purple". I have no idea of how Marvel will try to make these colors work, assuming Betsy is still Captain Britain, but I hope they can make it work.

(...maybe they could have Betsy wearing the pink-purple-black Disassembled uniform again and the only "Captain Britain" part of the uniform would be a Union Jack mask covering her face or something like that?)

fsaker u a sweetheart but dat would NOT be pretty no sir no maam
