Mahmud Asrar Says Goodbye to 'Excalibur'

After revealing the cover to Excalibur #26, Mahmud Asrar took to Twitter to say goodbye to Excalibur.

Asrar: A bittersweet experience getting to work on this cover as it marks the end of my longest cover run for Marvel. It was wonderful to be a part of this series and it’s all thanks to my collaborators and you!

The solicit for December's Excalibur #26 seems to indicate the book will end; however, no official confirmation was given. According to Entertainment Weekly "most (though not all) X-Men comics will temporarily pause to give the spotlight to The X Lives of Wolverine/The X Deaths of Wolverine", a weekly event running from January 2022.

Whether Excalibur will be relaunched in 2022 remains to be seen.

Another good bites the dust. You will be missed from Excalibur Mahmud Asrar.

You've done so much for Betsy with your stylish Disassembled Psylocke costume and Excalibur covers.

Marcus To flees next the book is done. Hire Liefeld to draw the covers and interiors.

Two months of Wolverine until the new books is gonna be drag.

Wolverine again???? Oh no!! More boring months with boring issues again!

If it frees Betsy from this monstrosity, I'm all for it.

I'd rather have Wolverine than Emma Frost being shoehorned in every book like she has in the past months.

Asrar's covers have been fine...but news of this title possibly ending? I have only one thing to say to that: Finally.

A sad goodbye. I enjoyed Mahmud Asrar's covers run and hope that a broader change will happen to Excalibur moving forward. Despite the interesting world building to the Otherworld by Tini Howard, Betsy took the brunt of the unfortunate changes and bad characterization. The time is near for Betsy to go back to who she was.

Right? For me I've been sick of Emma since Utopia where she's been essentially the star of the XMen since then.

I wonder what will happen to Betsy after this run is over... will she manage to join another X-book? Will she be sidelined but still live in Krakoa, like Dazzler? Will she move to the UK and only appear whenever a writer decides to have a story take place there? Or will she be stuck in Otherworld (which would mean she'll basically vanish)?

Hopefully she'll still be used in the X-books next year.

Hopefully she'll get her Dissassembled look back and Brian can get Captain Britain back.

Well Marvel is adamant on her remaining as CB so wherever she ends up next will have to involve Otherworld and magic to some degree. How predictable and boring :( why is being a Betsy fan nothing but pain?

Finn said...

Yes in the movies mystique and in the comics Emma they both got more spotlight than the actual X-Women :(

X-Man said...

Maybe but Marvel also likes what makes them money first and foremost lol.

I'm not sure Betsy is as much a hit as CB as they wanted and I still think Betsy is far more popular a character than Kwannon (as Psylocke or just as Betsy).

So I guess we'll see how it goes. Hopefully better things are on the horizon for Betts either way :)

I do think it's time she escaped Tini's grasp, that's for sure.

Marvel did Betsy pigsty dirty. Looks kettle lame AF! Lost the coolness she had with the Psylocke and butterfly.

Revanche is no winner. A troubled geisha mom with a dead daughter in a jar? Had a fresh start with her and blew it too.

Foolish decisions for Betsy. Mahmud Asrar should stay and Howard leave with the Captain Britain and magic boredom. I miss my Betsy three years in a row as a team with the X-Men the way she used to kick ass. I don't like the change never get used to it. I want to drop Marvel comics for that and many more strikes. Graphic novels do the job better.

Well....I guess that Asrar wont be the only one that will be leaving. Betsy has been my favorite charater since the 90's in any comic book besides Judge Anderson, my other favorite telepath who gets what Betsy isn't getting from Marvel - love.

Ever since getting her original body back she's been shitted on so much that's there nothing there for me to love or even like. Leah Williams and Tini Howard have been the worst, the WORST X-Men writers that I've ever seen and they managed to ruin a character that used to be very strong, headstrong, warm and also deeply flawed and they left nothing but a shell.

After reading Inferno #1 I realized that Marvel doesn't care about Betsy Braddock at all and they will only focus on the murdering, sexy ninja with a fetish for baby killers. Inferno #1 was the biggest f*** y**/middle finger that Marvel could give to Betsy and it made me realize that I have no more love or interest left in my about Betsy anymore, I don't know this character, I don't recognize this character and I'm through torturing myself by keep reading about her and see her being destroyed piece by piece by piece....

And also, this Krakoa era sucks. I'm tired of seeing the X-Men act like drones, with no dreams or morals left.

Thank you Betsy for all this years of fun adventures and to all of you guys, I truly think that Betsy's fans are the best and more than Marvel deserves.

Thank Goodness! No more dog faces, and stubby bodies and limbs. I will not miss Mahmud Asrar in the least, I hated his covers. He cannot draw female characters' faces, and their bodies are always stumpy.

The only props I will give Asrar is that he made a great costume for Disassembled Betsy. The Captain Britain costume was only made tolerable by Marcus To's smooth linework (which Asrar doesn't have). Asrar made the costume look bulky and rough, Wilton Santos made the costume look rough. Even RB Silva couldn't draw the costume without making it look rough.

I hope Asrar isn't put on any more X-Men books. I hope he goes to Substack or DC.
