And so the X of Swords begins...

Now that we know that the four figures on the red cloud are indeed Apocalypse's Four Horsemen (the FIRST Four Horsemen, to be exact), I wonder: could this mean that Apocalypse will be the menace in the event? Or maybe the Horsemen are the menace, betraying their master?

And, if both Apocalypse AND the Horsemen are truly on the X-Men's side, WHO could be the antagonist(s)?

Alex said...

My favorite Horsemen will probably always be Remenders "Final Four" so I'm hoping that these very first ones have something that sets them apart. Especially from all the other horsemen teams they've had over the years.

FSaker said...

@Alex, agree! It's a shame that Remender himself ended up killing three of his Horsemen and turning the fourth one into a defenseless mother; they were all very interesting characters.

I think the fact Hickman created four original characters as his Horsemen instead of turning pre-established characters into Horsemen is already a plus. And last time he created a group of villains, we got the Black Order, which became huge in all media, from the MCU to the video games to the comics themselves; hopefully his Horsemen will reach this success as well.

@FSaker I agree with it!!! Nothing like an original concept of Four Horsemen sounds better then anything else. Plus with Realm of Champions coming out soon...Pyramid X, with Apocalypse as Baron, we got War Lands (War Angel), Plague Lands (Pestilence Kwannon), Death Lands (Death Magento), and Famine Lands (Famine Storm). Matter of fact, it feels like X-Men Apocalypse all over again!!!

@Renegade X, wow, I wasn't aware of this game! It looks interesting. But are the Marvel characters playable or just NPCs?

From what I saw, most popular heroes like Captain America, Hawkeye, Wolverine, Spider-Man and Thor aren't among the rulers of this world, so I'm curious if they are playable or just completely absent and the players create their own heroes instead, like a MMORPG (which this game seems to be).

If it's the first case, it's actually cool that Kwannon was chosen as a NPC rather than Betsy, as it increases Betsy's chance to be among the playable characters. If it's the latter... well, it's still better that they chose Kwannon to be a Horsewoman, so she's the one the players will be beating up, instead of Betsy.

First game where its Kwannon and not Betsy. This is the beginning of the end of Betsy. RIP

FSaker said...

@randybear, To be fair, from what I understand she's both an NPC and a villain, both being things I wouldn't like Betsy to be in a video game. And the only X-Man among the Horsemen who could be chosen as a playable hero is Storm (Magneto is often portrayed as a villain, and Angel... well, Angel is simply ignored in video games), so I don't see it as a sign of any danger to Betsy.

But we'll have to wait for bigger video game projects to be sure of that, of course. Maybe a Marvel Ultimate Alliance 4, or a new Marvel vs Capcom game (though I doubt Capcom is eager to make a new MvC after Disney's interference messed up the most recent game).

randybear said...

FSaker, Magneto is often playable in Marvel games where XMen are included. Besides when have you seen a video game include someone like Rachel or Hope over Jean? I dont see devs picking Captain Britain over a playable Psylocke/Kwannon.

If that weren't the case Marvel wouldn't be trying so hard to preserve 90s Psylocke for marketing purposes.

FSaker said...

Sorry, my previous comment wasn't clear. I know Magneto is often playable in Marvel games; what I meant is that he's hardly ever portrayed in them as part of the X-Men - most of the times, he is a villain that only joins the heroes to fight a common enemy (as in MUA3 and MvC3).

And indeed, 90s Psylocke is very marketable and she's probably going to appear in lots of media now that Marvel (in fact Disney) is interested in the X-Men again. But I don't think this means Kwannon will take Betsy's place. In the case of Realm of Champions, it seems Betsy isn't there - but neither are Cyclops, Jean, Rogue or even freakin' Wolverine. In fact, it seems most of the A-list heroes aren't there: Captain America, Hulk, T'Challa, Doctor Strange... only Iron Man is shown (and as an NPC, it seems) and Spider-Man is hinted. If/when the Marvel heroes are added to this game, if anything, I'd say Betsy's inclusion becomes more likely thanks to Kwannon being a villain.

And while Excalibur isn't setting the readers on fire, I still think Betsy as Captain Britain could work to push her into multimedia territory, with the UK getting their own superhero in these works. Plus, Betsy as Captain Britain is much more marketable than Brian as Captain Britain. It's up to Marvel to explore the opportunity.

randybear said...

I honestly doubt it. Again my point is logical that devs will chose ninja Kwannon over Betsy CB. No way in hell will they include both when they already have Psylocke/Kwannon.

I'm not speaking solely of this game I'm saying games going forward, period. You're not going to see a Marvel vs Capcom or Ultimate Alliance game including Betsy over Kwannon. It stops with Psylocke.

Much like how large majority of the time Colossus is chosen over Rogue as far as tanks when it comes to the XMen. I just dont logically see marketing ever choosing Betsy over Kwannon.

Wow, hearing that Kwannon is in a game over Betsy is really upsetting, especially considering she's alongside big X-men like Storm and Magneto. I guess this really is the end for Betsy, she'll probably get some niche appearances as Captain Britain.

randybear said...

Ry, it's sad when even the sole writer of Betsy would rather be writing Apocalypse than Betsy. We really need a writer that loves Betsy to take over and make her likeable again.

Betsy's new status quo hasn't been the most well received and I dont see her lasting long amongst the XMen without fading to obscurity. Also as much as I love Betsy it's such a shame the direction they've taken Brian and his new look is awful. Neither character is being done right by Marvel since DoX.

I think a great move for Betsy is rejuvenate the Marvel UK brand for the heroes maybe recall it Marvel EU. We got so many great mutants and others like Pete Wisdom, Spitfire, Blade, Union Jack, Bloodstone, her family, te=he Captain Britain Corps, Exodus, Lady Excalibur, Nightcrawler, etc...

Rahsaan said...

I think a great move for Betsy is to make her Psylocke again. And if she doesn't want the Mojo-assigned name which I totally understand, then give both her and Kwannon new code names. It makes even less sense that Kwannon would want Besty's Mojo-assigned Psylocke identity than Betsy wanting it. LOL.

Captain Britain is Brian's. I was so excited for this run, but I'm willing to admit I was wrong. I want Disassembled Psylocke back. I also like Nothing Kwannon more than Kwannon masquerading as 90s Psylocke.

Renegade X said...

@Rahsaan we don't even know Kwannon's real name yet, such a shame. I do agree they BOTH need new code names. Some people still think the Psylocke name belongs to an Asain body which people recognized more of. Should Betsy retain the Psylocke name, to the point of it yes but knowing both got a few new start of life maybe Betsy should be Psylocke and Kwannon gets a new code name.

FSaker said...

I don't know... I still believe "Captain Betsy" could become big if properly developed.

Then again, if she returns to the Psylocke codename, that's cool as well. In that case, hopefully she can be close to her version in the Disassembled arc.

Agree. Marvel make it work!

I stand wholeheartedly with Rahsaan. Marvel acts racist when they give white used aliases to poc.

The thing is since Disney bought Marvel (even sometime before that) it's been all about branding. Psylocke has been a ninja for 30 years, when most people think of Psylocke they think of a psychic ninja because that's how must people got introduced to her as + all her mainstream appearances and merchandise (aside from one action figure of her in her outback armor from the 90s) have been as a ninja. Marvel knows that ninja Psylocke makes money so they don't want to lose her. Meanwhile, Disney is planning the X-men in the MCU and Psylocke is a big contender because of her popularity. Marvel has a chance to rebrand Psylocke the way they did in disassembled similarly with how Carol was rebranded as Captain Marvel for the films and marketing purposes. Marvel knows ninja Psylocke makes money and imagine how much money she will make to a mainstream audience especially with ninjas being more popular due to the success of Naruto. So, Marvel, has Kwannon rip off everything about Betsy and only call herself Psylocke just so they can keep the ninja Psylocke brand alive while tricking casuals that there is only one Psylocke. This whole thing is a marketing ploy. So if the MCU decides to use Psylocke, we all know directors and writers don't read a lot of comics to prepare only the big ones and Betsy's biggest appearance right now has been Uncanny X-Force so I assume that's what she will be based off. My guess is that the MCU will use Psylocke and not have anyone call her Betsy/Kwannon so they can sell the Betsy comics and keep having Kwannon calling herself Psylocke to trick the mainstream audience that these are the same character. Meanwhile, Betsy will stay as Captain Britain and probably be pushed into a smaller role among the X-men and Marvel has a whole because let's face it Captain Britan is nowhere near as popular as Psylocke. I could be wrong, but from a marketing perspective, this seems like a solid plan even if it disappoints Psylocke/Betsy fans because at the end of the day making money is what matters to these big companies.

Right now Kwannon is enemy number 1 to me because she is going to keep ripping off Betsy's likeness and take the legacy she worked so hard to build while reaping the success from it. Personally, I don't care what version of Psylocke we get whether it be the ninja version, disassembled version, or the 80's version just as long as it's Betsy because that's the Psylocke I care about.
