'X of Swords' Becomes a 24-Part Event

Newsarama: Marvel's 'X of Swords' X-Men crossover appears to have expanded in scope from what X-line editor Jordan D. White described to Newsarama as a "15-part story", with a new checklist for the crossover showing 24 parts – with more potentially in the wings.

"'X of Swords' is what we have always thought of as a classic X-Crossover," White told Newsarama in March 2020, following the event's announcement at C2E2. "It's a 15-part story that crosses the entire line. It's a big story that affects all of the X-World, so it's only right it jump into every book."

White also described 'X of Swords' as having 15 parts in the event's C2E2 announcement.

'X of Swords' kicks off in September with X of Swords: Creation #1, labeled 'Chapter One' on the 'X of Swords' checklist, with X-Factor #4 featuring 'Chapter Two' also in September.

The checklist shows the order of chapters as they'll appear in Marvel's monthly X-Men titles, including X-Men, Marauders, X-Factor, Wolverine, Cable, Excalibur, X-Force, and Hellions, as well as three one-shots: the previously mentioned Creation, X of Swords: Stasis in October, and X of Swords: Destruction in November. Another possible tie-in featuring Captain Britain was possibly revealed in the latest episode of Marvel's Pull List, though no details have been revealed.

'X of Swords' – pronounced "ten of swords", like the Roman numeral - brings together threads from throughout the current 'Dawn of X' era of the X-Men, and centers on mutants wielding magical blades from across the Marvel Universe in battle against a still unrevealed opponent.

Though the exact details of the set-up remain to be seen, Apocalypse has been pulling the strings of the mutants of Krakoa for some time, trying to set up an ancient magical ritual involving the Otherworld – home to its own magical blade, the Sword of Might.

'X of Swords' kicks off in September with two prelude issues in Excalibur #12 and X-Men #12.

Damn now it’s 24 parts, sorry to sound cynical but this seems like it’s gonna be trash (I could be wrong) most events can barley take 6 or 12 issues at the most let alone 24. Plus there are multiple different writers meaning story quality will vary depending on who’s writing. Can’t wait for issues filled with nothing meaningful happening to the plot, this might be the first big downfall of Dawn of X. I could be wrong and maybe this will be good. But I’m not looking forward to this monster event cutting into the plot lines of the books I’m enjoying😪

On a side note it looks like Children of the Atom got axed which is probably a smart move, the book was doomed from the start and probably would’ve lasted 10 issues at the most maybe 12.

24 parts is gross. I cant imagine it not dragging on.

Only good thing is it looks like Children of the Atom was cancelled. You should see the amount of dislikes it got on Marvel's YT lol

Yeah, 24 parts looks excessive. And it's odd that Cable's and Wolverine's solo books got involved (each one with two issues), while team books like X-Factor and New Mutants only get one issue on the crossover.

Still, I'm curious about this story. There is so much going on (magical swords, the return of the first Horsemen of Apocalypse, an apparent big involvement from Captain Britain - possibly referring to both Betsy and Brian, as both are on this cover, as is Meggan) that I'm curious how Hickman's team will try to make all of this fit into a cohesive story.

24 parts!? Jeez, not to echo chamber other comments but that's 10-14 too many. Whenever Marvel or particularly the X-books start getting good or decent the editors decide to throw in some meh crossover X-event.

Messiah complex, Age of X-Man, etc...too many events over the last decade have felt like cash grabs for individual issues & tpb.

Considering how many individual X-team books are out, there shouldn't be a problem telling a cohesive, good story across those for maybe 3 months at most. It's like how certain TV shows actually get better when studios cut them down from 20 odd episodes to 10-15. Makes the writers careful & appreciative of space.

@Alex I agree, every time the books start getting good we get some pointless event or crossover that ruins things. It's like Marvel wants to ruin good things on purpose. The thing that's really annoying with the 24 parts is that your average comic book run is able to tell multiple stories in 24 issues. 24 issues is a two year run for monthly books and 1 year run for bi-weekly books. Imagine reading a book for a year or two years that is only telling one story. There is gonna be so much pointless filler just to drag out the story and sell more issues.

Dawn of X has been super boring so far, so hopefully this event shakes things up a bit.

@Ry, Actually, extending a story for a full year isn't necessarily bad as long as it doesn't feel dragged out; Hickman's runs actually tend to look like a single long story, where each issue brings some development to it (hopefully that will be the case for X of Swords).

To me, the main problem seems to be that these 24 issues will be released in just three months (or two, as September only gets two chapters). This means that whoever wants to follow the full story will have to spend a lot of money during these months, even if these people were only following some X-books and ignoring the others. The final month will have ELEVEN issues... that should be quite heavy for most readers' pockets.

The one thing that keeps me interested in this event is that most of the writers involved in this crossover are really good. And yes, this includes Tini Howard; while she's been having problems with the characterizations of Betsy's team, she is a talented writer.

Then again, AvX also had five great writers (Fraction was inconsistent in his X-Men run but he has done a fantastic job in many other books) and we all know how that turned out... so yeah, I'm interested, but with caution.

@FSaker Oh yeah, I actually love overarching storylines like Hickman’s Avengers. I should of clarified that I’m more referring to a story arc. Like Hickman does have an overall story that ties in well together with his Avengers/New Avengers but he had multiple arcs within that story that kept things interesting and not stagnant. Like imagine if the main Infinity event (not counting tie-ins) went on for 24 issues and that event had two storylines going. X of swords is going to be a single arc that lasts 24 issues that is most likely apart of a bigger picture. I doubt we’re going to get subplots that pay of big in the endgame just with how event crossovers go
