NYCC 2019: X-Men - Dawn of X Panel

As the sun sets in New York, Marvel's "X-Men: Dawn of X" panel rises here at New York Comic Con. Ed Brisson (New Mutants), Tini Howard (Excalibur), Benjamin Percy (X-Force) are joined by X-Men Group editor Jordan D. White and Marvel Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski to talk about what's coming. Welcome to the Dawn of X panel... we hope you survive the experience!

Excalibur #5 & Excalibur #6 Covers by Mahmud Asrar, on sale in January 2020

Tini Howard said that Hickman's ideas immediately spoke to the idea of mutants building things that cultures aren't able to until they are able to flourish. "They can make art and magic and that's what this is the story of. It's also the story of Betsy Braddock who has recently been divorced from a body that wasn't hers and is kind of adrift on the isle of Krakoa."

Excalibur #1 Interior Art by Marcus To & Erick Arciniega

Howard says that she's getting to work with a lot of characters she loves and "one real big blue jerk." Howard says her book has a journey for Apocalypse as well. She talks about Marcus To as akin to Alan Davis in the kinds of things he's able to do on the page. When developing the characters she sent him a lot of reference from waterhouse paintings to Revolutionary Girl Utena "Girls with swords, it's the mood".

It's too soon to tell if this book will be good, but Howard seems really excited to write it (and extra points for having Revolutionary Girl Utena as a reference), and To's art looks beautiful in these pages!

Speaking of the pages, I love the awkward moment between Betsy and Kwannon (I hope Betsy is probing her mind to make sure Kwannon will be as far away as possible), the cuteness of Jubilee and Shogo, the sexy moment between Rogue and Gambit (and who's the brunette spying on them?)...

And these two covers seem to indicate that the Krakoa flowers will play a big role in Excalibur and Apocalypse may use them for his own agenda (and I hope Rogue being naked and glowing in one of them doesn't mean she'll die and be revived; though the latest issues of HoX and PoX seem to imply that the resurrection does indeed bring their souls back, I'm still not comfortable with the idea of my favorite characters going through this process).

I love that moment when Betsy stomp on Kwannon's thoughts, that must have been uncomfortable and awkward, after all Betsy used Kwannon's body for many years. Now that Kwannon's back they need a moment for closure on their whole body swapping ordeal. Poor girls. I hope they can have a nice relationship if not friendship, after all, Betsy and Kwannon have had this unique bond for decades.

So Kwannon has dark purple hair still? I thought they were going with Black in Fallen Angels. Funny, I still think they resemble each other In these panels lol.

It's Trinary

In another picture from the panel, it looks black. Clearly the editors have no idea what's going on at this point.

The editors dont care. It's the poor artists trying their best to figure this shit out. That's why they listen to the fans when we point this stuff out

Kwannon has PURPLE hair. Spiral didn't just switch Betsy and Kwannon's minds, she mixed and tweaked their DNA. Artists drawing Kwannon with black hair were not correct.

I like the colors used in the preview pages, so vibrant! Looks almost like an animation cell. Don't know the context, but I hope Betsy isn't struggling to manifest the butterfly, because that would confirm that she no longer has it.

Rogue's 'condition'? Could she be pregnant? I too don't want Rogue to become a pod mutant. Why is Trinary side eyeing Rogue, is she trying to steal a newly youthful looking Gambit away?

Soapfan, Jordan white Marcus To and writer of Fallen Angel's all confirmed Kwannon is getting the butterfly.

Not sure why people still think betsy has the butterfly?

But didn't Betsy dye her hair before? It is only now that her purple hair is actually natural with her recreating her body. So Spiral playing with their DNA shouldn't have affected Kwannon's hair. Perhaps Kwannon was always naturally purple and will start dyeing her hair black to be somewhat original since she seems to be copying everything else Betsy did/had lol.

The DNA mixing was retconned (was one line and a retcon itself to begin with) in Psylockes mini series. Her original body was analyzed and confirmed her body was real but the purple color was fake.

Rahsaan said...

@X-Man, exactly! If anything, DNA tweaking would make Kwannon have blonde hair if her hair was going to change; not purple.

Rahsaan said...

Purple hair has never been part of Elizabeth's DNA aside from this silly thing Zub recently did with hair and eyes, which I hope is retconned and she goes back to having blue eyes and dyed purple hair now that she is back in her rightful body.

To me, best part of all this is Betsy becoming herself again, plus all the badass background. She is a princess ar last like Emma said, and powerful as never ever before. If Kwannon or anyone try to play with her body/mind, probably gonna have a Lot of trouble...

Is Rogue the person glowing pink? I thought it was Betsy at first but it looks like Rogue's white streak at the top of the hair.

FSaker said...

@Ry - Yes, that's probably Rogue.

I love that Jubilee will have Shogo with her. Betsy has to be his godmother!

And Betsy should tear out Kwannon's hair so she grows black Japanese instead of purple cause that ain't her color. Butterfly isn't hers either it's legitimately Betsy's power sign.

I don't want Betsy and Kwannon to be pals. No. Enemies is better.

X-Man said...

@Rahsaan thanks. I don't mind Betsy with blue or purple eyes. So I can hope we get blue if others want that. I never looked closely lol. I do kinda like the purple hair being natural now though. A little perk of the body recreation lol. She's stayed that hair color (albeit different shades) in both bodies, so I think that at least is a permanent fixture anyway however she achieves it lol.

I wonder if Rogue will have a connection with Krakoa similar to how she had a connection to Utopia in Ultimate Comics X-men

The team chemistry is already there but Tini Howard builds the new Excalibur team structure carefully which I applaud. The solicitations art kind of predicts that. The writer has studied who Betsy Braddock was before the body swap, what Rogue has been through, Gambit's rocky past, Jubilation's life adversities and the evidence that Shogo is remembered gives me hope for a good run. Rictor will be more than a fill-in mutant by reading the solicitations summary.

@Rahsaan, @X-Man It is lost in the translation of rotating writers and bad editors that Betsy is genetically blonde like her twin brother Brian.

If editors were awake, to keep track of physical traits and personality differences of characters, we wouldn't get into hair and eye color debates.

Because Betsy has blonde hair, which she loves to dye purple, and blue eyes. Were the hair of Betsy to become naturally purple, we lose a part of her personality that tells her history as a fashion model. Erasing parts of a character's established backstory via iconography and constantly retconning those, damages the character and complicates things.

Marvel will end the hair and eyes confusion with TRUE BELIEVERS: X-MEN - BETSY BRADDOCK #1 reprint. It collects the Captain Britain issues #8-10 from 1976 where Betsy was blonde.
