Storm with curly hair is acceptable. Everything else is wrong in this picture.

M...Arab She-Hulk.
Dazzler...Taylor Momsen.
Wolverine...Alfred Pennyworth dressed as Logan.
Psylocke...outdated.

Alexis said...

Yes! That's what Psylocke should look like...
To be fair, it is Psylocke...not Captain Britain.

They should rename this site.

Jeez I ve been watching from afar but felt like I t’s time to Speak up. I ve loved Psylocke since the early 90’s especially since the Jim Lee/Capcom days. I know she has been loved a lot longer than that and that she has some pretty epic origins that were changed (that some could say are not ‘normal’ but what is normal in comics). People love Asian Psylocke and people love British Betsy Psylocke. Obviously Marvel is trying to correct the bizarre racial change but it doesn’t mean that we can’t appreciate both version of classic Betsy and the new Psylocke. In fact I’m quite excited to have 2 characters I love in slightly different ways! Comics are a dying art so I think we need a lil more love and a lil less hate! #PeaceOut

Storm and Monet look bizarre. To be honest, Kris Anka and Jen Bartel are two of the most overrated artists nowadays. Their art lack any sense of movement and the characters look like bored mannequins.

Unknown said...

It is great to see fans of Asian Psylocke here!
@Unknown thank you for speaking up. I agree with you.

There has been a lot of criticism of Asian Psylocke on this website and even though fans get both versions now, there are still people who complain that Betsy doesn't get the Psylocke title. She upgraded.

As for this picture, these costumes were designed by Kris Anka himself and he put serious thought into the look of each costume. This was a good era for the X-Men. Kris Anka and Jen Bartel are only getting better with time.

Ha ha! Unknowns circle jerking each other and loving Kwannon so so original! A character who started Yellowface and her booty split by coochie-cutters is her strongest card still in 2019.

Hell no I won't love a misogynistic racist token of Asian chick thanks a lot. Who is a ninja for Asian reference, racist capstone much? Plus she wears Betsy's hand-me-downs identity with intensified racism. Isn't anything original going on with Coochnnon? Last time she went by Revanche ain't she?

Karma, Armor, Surge, Jubilee, Nature Girl are better Asians. And Karma is a lesbian I've never seen queer folk trying to protect and push her to be the main focus. So insensitive of you because she is also a physically disabled person.

And about Captain Britain being a Psylocke upgrade time will tell. The Butterfly belongs to Betsy Braddock just basic FYI.

"Karma, Armor, Surge, Jubilee, Nature Girl are better Asians"

I don't think that's how it works.

FSaker said...

"They should rename this site"

I don't know about that. To be fair, I also thought about it at first, but then considered it's not really necessary. I don't know about you guys, but to me, Betsy will always be Psylocke, no matter which codename she's using now or if some cheap copycat is using her codename.

Plus, Marvel tends to be cyclical in its changes (it shouldn't be this way, but let's face it: it is); if Kwannon fails to connect to the readers as the new Psylocke (and she most likely will), I wouldn't be surprised if some time after Hickman's run Marvel decided to give Betsy the Psylocke codename back, reinstate Brian as Captain Britain and either kill off Kwannon or send her alive to editorial limbo.

FSaker said...

Speaking of Betsy as Psylocke, have you guys ever read the "Mephisto Vs." miniseries? I just read it yesterday; it's from the late 1980s and shows Mephisto facing the main superhero teams of that time while he executes some complex plan, and the third issue involves the X-Men - including Psylocke, who was still in her original body and still had that tacky pink outfit (oh, and Havok and Colossus weren't in the team yet - although strangely Magneto is also absent).

I enjoyed it quite a lot.

Finn said...

I love Asian body Betsy better but Betsy is Betsy doesn't matter on Wich body she's in .

Rahsaan said...

I love when Storm is depicted with afro-textured hair. She doesn't look bizarre at all as tightly curled hair as how most African-American and Kenyan peoples hair grows. Her father is Afro-American and her mother is Kenyan. If Storm had been created today when creators are more inclusive and present diverse phenotypes, she probably would look more like this than how she was depicted when created.

I love this Psylocke costume, and if Kwannon is going to wear an Elizabeth hand-me-down, I would prefer this over the bathing suit.

Nate X said...

@FSaker That is true. Betsy's tenure as Captain Britain will probably last 3-4 years give it or take. Same as X-23 as Wolverine or Jane as Thor.

Kiki M. Ishola said...

@Rahsaan can we please appreciate how bang on is Storm's hair in Afro style? They are freakin white clouds, puffy and heavenly! A weather goddess with matching hair looking like clouds!

I'm biased being a black female who doesn't chemically straighten her hair and Storm could benefit by doing the same. Obviously I'm joking because Storm's mutation may count in her hair and why it's smooth on top of her blue eyes.

Kiki M. Ishola said...

@Unknown I'll tell you how it works for Marvel.

Simple very simple to understand if you're willing.

Kwannon is a ninja racially stereotypical of people coming from Japan. A sexy ninja who whores herself out because that sells toys, plushies, cute and cuddly shit and of course brings all the boys to the yard to beat it dry. This explains what Kwannon is honest perfectly.

Karma, Armor, Jubilee, Surge and Nature Girl are not stereotypical Asians in their personalities and powers. They didn't start as cheap male gaze and most of all aren't tokens and cloners of an established character like Psylocke-Elizabeth Braddock.

Should U.S.A. give its name to Canada because it started feeling divided and jealous? Finders, keepers you say? No darling you see the Psylocke name isn't unowned or abandoned just because Marvel has to shoehorn Kwannon's sex appeal somewhere for cash grabbing.

Kwannon to survive needs Betsy's code-name, powers, butterfly symbol, purple color, personality and Betsy's endless list of friends and ex-boyfriends. Coochnnon is a basic impersonator until Marvel comes up with an original identity for her as well as powers. Revanche was good.

Rahsaan said...

@Kiki, I hope they give Storm afro-textured hair in the MCU. Especially, if played by Kiki Layne! I don't think relaced hair really suits us at all. Granted, Storm's hair is not meant to be relaxed and there are African peoples with straight hair. However, based on Storm's ancestry from Bantu peoples (Kenyan and Afro-American)in the books, I can only conclude she was given straight hair when introduced to pander to eurocentric standards of beauty. Whenever I see afro-textured depictions of Storm, she looks just as if not more gorgeous and true to what someone from her lineage would probably look like.

Flatlined when I read about all the boys in the yard beating it dry. LMAO! Your way with words always makes me die laughing.

@ Kiki, those crude comments that you make about Kwannon are racially-charged and racist in and of themselves. Discover your filter.

There are real-life Asian women who cosplay as Asian Psylocke because they feel empowered by her appearances in the comics. Are they just as trashy as your description of Kwannon?

"Fallen Angels" is a chance to make Kwannon into her own character, but that might not happen with Bryan Hill as the writer. He tends to write action-driven stories.

Unknown said...

Nearly all of Kiki's comments are racially-charged and filled with disparaging remarks while others like Psi Girl and Randybear who respond with praise or join in are complicit. The "better Asians" remark is pretty blatant but no surprise.

I think sometime back certain posters here vocally criticized Kwannon in an effort to lobby for their preferred version of Betsy to be brought back, knowing and hoping that their comments would be read by Marvel staff. But they created a toxic environment for this site. Please be mindful that negativity breeds more negativity. It's not needed.

That said, their efforts to trash Kwannon are directly responsible for Kwannon gaining the chance to develop as her own character, gaining the title of Psylocke, gaining the Butterfly power signature, and restoring the classic The Hand costume, so keep up the great work, disparagers.

The more you hate, the more Kwannon gains.

Peace.

Unknown said...

@Unknown I agree.
Kiki's comments are also targeted at particular posters, which is down right disgusting. But they also post like that because of all the enablers on this site.
You're right, there is not point of sinking to their level.
It's nice to chat with someone who is looking forward to Kwannon being Psylocke, and can see things from different angles.

On this site, it's like the Asian Psylocke fans have to always rise above.
It's a shame because this site has done a good jobs of supporting the character and it should be a welcoming environment for all fans.

Unknown said...

I might add that the Psylocke costume in the covers of Fallen Angel's might not be her actual costume on the inside. Comics do that a lot especially with #1's. Like it or not Kwannon is part of Psylocke/Betsy's past, she clearly has a back story why not give her a chance?

Jaime Braz said...

@Unknown shaming Betsy fans in a Betsy fanpage to favor Kwannon is pathetic. Demanding persistently for the blog to change its name to cater to Kwannon stealing Betsy's Psylocke history is disgusting and petty of you.

Betsy was and always will be Psylocke possessing the butterfly effect. After all it is her spiritual essence formed by sheer will into the physical world.

I think you must immediately check your delusional disorder that urges you to love a lie. The ninja with the revealing bathing suit you revere as totem of power and sexuality was always Elizabeth Braddock. Even when the psyches were mixed the most prevalent was Betsy's.

The stories with action and interactions with fellow X-Men in the attractive Asian body again all Betsy's. Wherever you turn your head, whatever page you flip Betsy Braddock will hunt you as Psylocke. Deal with it with therapy to abandon your denial before it consumes you.

You mention Asian women cosplaying Kwannon's body as a positive thing? A cosmetic surgery of Asianification that became a racist body swap? The nerve. You have a great quantity.

At the time they cosplayed wasn't empowering at all. Asian women dressed as a Yellowface caricature and brought shame on their Asian heritage in ignorance of the whole racial clusterfudge.

Kwannon taking up the slave name Psylocke which Mojo has given to Betsy isn't empowering at all for Asian women. You fell right into your empowerment trap.

Jaime Braz said...

@FSaker Yes I remember the Mephisto mini series. It pushed all of the heroes boundaries and comics code authority with the mature story it told.

The triangle of Human Torch, the Thing and Alicia was the weird romantic trope of the 80s.

I suspect Jean Grey became the forever damsel in distress starting with this mini series. It has set the tone for the hypoglycemic Jean Grey of the 90s X-Men cartoon.

Psylocke (Betsy Braddock) scanning the minds and releasing the Mephisto chain reaction shows which story Joe Kelly traced to write the 90s Psi War of the Shadow King.

The grossest highlight was Mephisto and Rogue doing something that will never be wiped off any reader's mind.

Also it was fun to know that Longshot doesn't have the typical human soul and Rogue steals more than personality and powers with her touch.

FSaker said...

@Jaime Braz, Yes, Mephisto kissing Rogue was... blergh.

As for Jean becoming a damsel in distress, I guess I'll have to re-read the miniseries to remember why Mephisto even bothered to capture her. I remember him capturing Sue to lure the X-Factor, Rogue to get access to Thor's soul, and Thor to fool Hela, but I really can't remember how Jean contributed to his plan at all. Certainly it wasn't to lure the X-Men, as they didn't even know she was alive back then, or that the O5 were working together as the X-Factor.

Jaime Braz said...

@FSaker The X-Factor was captured by Mephisto possibly due to the unrequited love of Wolverine for Jean. Mephisto wanted to break Wolverine's soul because he has longevity energy as a soul with centuries of life. Also to lure Rogue via Logan. He said mutant souls are valuable gold or something. Which reveals that mutants are more pricey than humans.

I liked Angel's side quest reigniting the passion of an elderly woman for life. I don't remember if that was part of the Mephisto story or not before Inferno. One of the few times Warren wasn't crying over the loss of his wings. Betsy had lost her eyes and some ribs by Slaymaster and Sabretooth however she wasn't whining about it.

Mephisto acted as notary abiding by human law and released Franklin Richards for being a minor without authority over himself to sign. That was weird on behalf of Marvel's devil. A devil that hasn't reversed OMD.

I understand some of you may remember Psylocke as British/white but some people only know Psylocke as the kick ass Asian ninja (like me) especially those who got into comics after the famous Jim Lee era. Those fans may still want an asian ninja for their Psylocke and that's why I'm happy we now have 2 'Psylockes'. Jim Lee designed her look and he is asian & he drew her fantastically and i thought it was great to have a more diversity in x-men. Nearly all female superheroes have had a swimsuit outfit (she hulk, ms marvel, star fire, wonder woman to name a few)infact nearly all the classics do. Her swimsuit look is ICONIC (although agree its not realistic/appropriate/chaffing). Psylocke to me is an asian ninja and i f-ing love asian ninjas! so please stop saying that as if its always a negative.

I hope this blog keep covering both Psylocke and Betsy as many of us joined for Psylocke (Hot asian ninja) but also love Betsy's new evolution (Captain Britain).

PS - I have finally made myself UN-unkown!

randybear said...

Thank you for registering Kiko! Welcome officially 😎

FSaker said...

@Jaime Braz, But that's the thing: from what I remember, Logan and Jean didn't even meet each other during the story, did they? Unless Mephisto told Logan that he had Jean's soul in his power, it seems to me that her capture was completely pointless.

Then again, I do remember Wolverine reverting to his animal instincts by the end of the story... I guess I'll have to re-read it after work to recall if it had anything to do with her.

Rahsaan said...

One thing I have always found interesting is the story that Bets was trying to wreck Scott and Jean’s home due to Kwannon’s influences. Specifically, because from everything we have seen of Kwannon, she actually is very honor-bound and it seems to be something she will die for. Specifically, it was the one shining trait she showed in Lodell’s run and Rosenberg’s.

I would rather forget that aspect of either Betsy or Kwannon, but it’s interesting to me that other writers who took over and corrected Nicieza’s bad writing never addressed that discrepancy in characterization. I wonder if they thought it bad writing from him.

Thanks for the warm welcomes! Took me 12 years to officially join lol. I’m slightly intoxicated but feel like the Betsy split is slightly like Brexit - unnecessary and for the older generation.... I JOKE! Lol

Jaime Braz said...

@Kikoken My comments were hard to read because the truth is cruel and bitter to disillusioned people who live in the bubble reality of their narrative. I repeat all the stories that made you love the Asian body was Betsy's for 27 consecutive years. No Brexit, no fluff and childish excuses you use to support the flimsy existence of Kwannon. Blame Fabian Nicieza, Kwannon's creator, for not being a writer.

On the packages of Psylocke toys and video game tags Betsy Braddock is written with capital letters also for 27 years. Betsy Braddock debuted as Psylocke in the X-Men comics with the butterfly effect. It's out of your hands to rewrite history although you keep trying to no avail. Even this image points at Betsy's new outfit during the all female X-Men run of Brian Wood in 2013. You have guessed right Betsy was starring there too.

Keep deflecting logical arguments to support the lie Kwannon's existence was and still is. A Betsy Braddock wannabe. If Marvel continues to appropriate traits of Betsy and hand them to the Asian assassin for garnering the attention of sexually frustrated teens.

I hope it doesn't take you another 12 years and multiple fake accounts to realize Betsy will always be Psylocke and Kwannon will eventually get a unique identity or be buried under the rubble of gimmickry.

I tried to keep this comment short Echo or whatever usernames you choose to hide behind because I imagine how hard is to live with short attention span and lack of reasoning.

Kikoken said...

@Jaime Braz you do realise she's just a comicbook character?

Rahsaan said...

The Body Wars continue... LOL.

What I’m hoping we see is Elizabeth and Kwannon have on-panel heart to heart conversation now that their fiasco has finally been rectified. I also hope that Kwannon has her full memory back at that time. Hell, maybe Elizabeth will be the one to help her retrieve her memories from before she resurrected as “Nothing.” And then they should go their separate ways. For a long time, I was of the mind that Kwannon should go to another corner of the MU, but in hindsight and after rereading her run after Lobdell had to course correct Nicieza’s mess, I can see and admit that I was wrong about her being a husk of a character. Lobdell actually wrote her well and made her a character who put honor above all. He centered her in the few issues he had her, gave her agency, and even showed how she wanted to ensure she could put things as right for Elizabeth as she could in her dying hours. I can respect that and even give her a chance if Marvel follows in Scott Lobdell’s footsteps and writes her correct and autonomous of Betsy.

Also, since I really vibe with the politics of Krakoa as sovereign nation that welcomes all mutants, I am realizing that she does belong there. Even more so now that she seems to have no one upon her resurrection.

And I’m über excited that Betsy will reclaim the Captian Britain mantle and be the champion that she deserves to be. Leading a team of eclectic, vivacious characters like Anna, Remy, Jubilation, and Julio Esteban is right up her alley and the honor that she deserves. 💜

Unknown said...

@Kikoken it's so great to see someone chill and in support of Asian Psylocke!
LOL at your joke. I agree, the separation of Betsy and Kwannon was so unnecessary and really only for the older readers.
Younger comic book fans have embraced Asian Psylocke as the only Psylocke and although the character's history was problematic, it somehow makes sense that an Asian woman could be British on the inside.
If anybody should find a new place in the Marvel universe, it's Betsy. Not trying to be rude, she has a new title, uniform and range of powers so why not?
This is the time for a new Psylocke, and hopefully she will be written well.

Kris Anka's art is terrible IMO. Looks like a seventh grader's deviantart page. In this pic, he manages to make Psylocke look okay, but what the heck is going on with Storm and Monet? I come from the time when we had heroic character proportions, and am not a fan of indie and "Calarts" hipster artists that infiltrated comics after 2010. Part of the reason comics are dying.

Unknown said...

A lot has been said soI'm not sure if this is the original argument anymore but I don't think this blog should cover anything Kwannon related. This site was created for Psylocke-Betsy Braddock not Psylocke II. And if your argument is that because you loved the asian ninja chick, which is strictly a cosmetic change, then it doesn't really seem like you're a fan of Betsy just more-so how she looks. The fighting aspect of Betsy isn't lost in her new CB form as she's been shown in some of To's sneak peeks fighting. Their personalities aren't the same. Despite the name and trauma they are not the same character. I'm one of the people who came to know Betsy in the ninja form but and just because Kwannon has it now doesn't make me an instant fan of her. Because Betsy is who I'm a fan of.

Kwannon is a blank slate, basically a new character. Her characterization from her short stint in the 90's has nothing to do with all the things Betsy has endured and gone through while in that body. If you want to go and discuss her and support her then great but this isn't the place to do it. Betsy and Kwannon shared a body but now that's separate. They were unlinked and after they have their initial conversations there won't be too much to keep them in constant contact with each other. Maybe one of the unknown should go and create a site for Kwannon so they have somewhere to discuss her.

I like Kris Anka's art especially his action panels but Olivier Coipel, Pepe Larraz & Joe Madureira are my artists of choice.

Regarding separating Psylocke from Betsy from Kwannon is ridiculous even as comic stories go... I got into comics though my love of Psylocke in the X-men:COTA fighting game. So I did love her fighting style and look before i read the comics (started collecting X-men comics from 1993 til this day) but that doesn't make me any less important as a fan of 'Psylocke'.

I imagine Psylocke/Kwannon will roughly have the same character traits as Psylocke in the X-Force/uncanny XF series. Darker, conflicted, killer.

Again I'm happy we now have 2 characters I'm looking forward to following & I hope this blog will follow both.

Jaime Braz said...

@Kikoken Well, Betsy Braddock is more than a fictional character to me and that's the root of your ignorance.

Elizabeth is my everything because I connect with her experiences and character as an individual who has lost a body part in an accident due to mental and physical abuse at a young age. Betsy's blindness and multiple violations against her body in various ways register my emotions and always make my eyes well up. Primarily with tears of pride that she has awakened from her nightmares to the reality of her survivor confident self.

So no Kikoken, Betsy is not a mere fictional damsel in distress rather a woman who triumphed over pain inflicted by others and became a champion of strength to stand on her own two feet and be thankful of her former weaknesses and trials which have led her to become a fighter to enjoy life on her own terms free at last in her own body and heritage.

Betsy as Psylocke in the X-Men is a coming of age and the cocoon of evolution that transformed her wounded body and soul into the majestic butterfly warrior you see as Captain Britain today. Betsy as Psylocke is the disabled and tortured woman who turned her own frown upside down and said to herself ''You will make through this girl just clench your teeth and stand up because you're stronger than you think.''

The body swap with the sexy Yakuza assassin dissolved all of that and turned for 27 years Betsy into a racist stereotype of lust which doesn't resonate with the real survivor essence of Elizabeth Braddock.

Unknown said...

It's ridiculous to NOT separate Betsy from Kwannon. If you're just going to have them doing the same thing with Kwannon keeping Betsy's darker personality traits then it made no sense to bring her back in the first place.

For Kwannon to truly thrive she would need her own personality and place (which Fallen Angels seems to want to do) away from Betsy. Plus, keeping them around only continues the body discourse and which one is "better" Something both characters need to move away from.

Unknown said...

"The body discourse" was fueled by old-school Psylocke fans who needed something to complain about.
Asian Psylocke was an integrated character.

@Kikoken is right: Psylocke is a fictional character.
If you are inspired by her that is great, but don't expect your individual perspective to treated as the only one.

This site is named after Psylocke. Psylocke before Betsy. So what will happen now that there is a new Psylocke?

Rahsaan said...

I really hope that Doug at least guest starts in an issue of Excalibur and we see he and Elizabeth catch up. I only recall them being in one issue together during Messiah Complex with zero real interaction.

I also want to see which of her two teammates, Kwannon will bond most with... Nathan or Laura. Or will they all bond? I’d be curious to see how Laura takes to her since Laura briefly idolized Betsy for one or two issues during a previous Uncanny volume.

Rahsaan said...

I also want to see the Danger Room/Practice Session rivalry between Rogue and Bets revived. That rivalry went way back to Mutant Massacre days all the way up through the Vargas days. It was something I enjoyed about their relationship.

Unknown said...

Fans of each side have fueled the body discourse. Asian Body fans were the cause of most of it when she went back to her old body.

The site is named after Psylocke but about Betsy Braddock as it has continued to be. Not Kwannon. You haven't seen news of her outside of solicits. You haven't seen Fallen Angels preview art. You havent seen any news that her creators talk about her on social media. Etc. If you want a Psylocke/Kwannon site then you should make it.

Unknown said...

I hope we get some Betsy/Logan action.

randybear said...

He seems bonded to Kwannon already so I'd guess he would teaming up with Kwannon going forward over Betsy.

Marvel seems to be distancing Betsy from everything that came before so I'm expecting a lot of new dynamics and explorations with her and everyone else. Kwannon will be claiming the last 30yrs of Betsy's stories.

The writer of Fallen Angel has somewhat confirmed this. Stating "I've always admired her (Kwannon) strength and discipline always willing to die for a great cause" along those lines. So at least the writer is under the impression Kwannon has always been Psylocke.

Because that's false. Kwannon was a criminal killer before Betsy she wasnt some noble warrior nor were her interests every about helping mutantkind

Before Betsy, Kwannon's character was simply a toy for Matsuo whom she happily served.

Kikoken said...

Yeah I agree with Randybear that ‘Kwannon will be claiming the last 30yrs of Betsy's stories‘.

I think we ll see more wolverine with Asian Psylocke than Betsy going fwd, they can bond over them being outcast ‘goodies’ who like to kill etc. Think Betsy’s whole ‘killer instinct’ story will be dropped fast by Marvel in favour for Asian Psylocke. That said Marvel will def be pushing Betys’s Captain Britain hard.

Here’s hoping for a love triangle between Angel and them both lol 🤞🏻😆

Kikoken said...

Also regarding whether Asian Psylocke is written about in this blog. I think it ll be a shame not to but understandable if they don’t want to.

If not They ll prob have to change the blog’s web name IMO or it won’t make much sense to new readers?

I'm curious if Betsy gets her precog powers back. Just theorizing since they seem to being back to her roots hard and especially if she does lose her telepathy.

Rahsaan said...

So y’all know I’m a ride or die British Betsy fan, but I do have to disagree with one point. Specifically, Kwannon having no honor. Yes, she was an assassin and criminal, and for many years including on this site I discounted her as a character. However, recently after reading Scott Lobdell’s portion of the Revanche Saga where he tries to undo the really terrible writing by Fabain Niciezac, I can see how he gave Kwannon some character and integrity and how she displayed honor and wanting to be killed before the virus destroyed her and wanting to ensure that Betsy got back all the missing pieces of herself even if she couldn’t get her own body back. In fact, the Kwannon he wrote was nothing at all like the hot mess that Nicieza portrayed influencing Betsy to come between Scott and Jean and the one who was always merely just violent and angry attacking Betsy any chance she got. That’s why I think they merely just dropped the whole Betsy/Scott/Jean triangle because it was just really salacious characterization for either character, Betsy oe Kwannon.

All this being said, I will always choose Betsy over Kwannon and will always choose, but reading the Lobdell story again all these years later just a week or so ago, I realize that Kwannon actually has the potential to be a character I could find interest in and root for. Also, it doesn’t hurt that Betsy’s next endeavor is one I am really excited for.

I think we’re jumping to a lot of conclusions about what role either woman will play in the grand scheme of the Krakoa nation and within the X-Men. At this point, I’m willing to be pleasantly surprised. Especially, with how fantastically House of X and Powers of Ten are going.

Rahsaan said...

Also, I am good with Kwannon taking on the ninjitsu aspect as long as Betsy still is down to fight physically which appears to be the case with her armor. Ninja Betsy always seemed like a different character to me, so this split is right up my alley. I guess that’s why I’m finally not as invested in the body debate anymore. I got my two wishes of having the Betsy I first met and loves back and I get to see a depiction of an Asian woman X-Man as a book lead without all the colonized fetish and tropes of having a white woman inhabit her existence. Because lord knows it seems like Marvel will never prominently feature any of the other East Asian X-Men as book leads despite our love of those characters, so if Kwannon will give some representation there as a fleshed-out character, then I can give that a chance. And perhaps, I just have gotten to a point of realizing that none of us wins when we argue with strangers online.

I do appreciate you all as do smile when I come here and read how impassioned we all are. 💜

Rahsaan said...

Also, I so think that Elizabeth will still be telepathic and telekinetic. I’m not sure why we think she is losing any of her powers. I do hope she is randomly precog again with visions that are still totally out of her control that happen sporadically.

Rahsaan said...

Lastly, I know many of you disagree with me on this, but it always reminds me of Kunta Kinte in Roots. Though he was called Toby by his enslavers, in his heart of hearts he never accepted the name that was used to enslave and dehumanize him. I’m not particularly attached to the codename, Psylocke as I am to the character, Elizabeth Braddock. When first given to Elizabeth, she was called “the Psylocke” by her enslaver, Mojo. The article in front of the name emphasizes that she was considered property versus an entity with agency. When she kept the name while joining Xavier’s School, Claremont made zero effort to explain why she would keep this name. There was have her make any statement or show of reclamation of that moniker, so I’m fine with Kwannon taking it as she has no history of being enslaved under the name. I wonder if Betsy will mention that when deciding to let Kwannon have it.

Unknown said...

First off, nobody has to choose one or the other if you don't want to. You can enjoy both fictional characters now.
Second, the Betsy fans have had it better than the Asian Psylocke fans, ever since the separation story happend in "Mystery in Madripoor". The cover of the fourth issue, which had the British Betsy standing over a passed out Asian Psylocke was problematic in terms of imagery.
Betsy got to come back with reinterpreted and possibly stronger powers, which she developed in another woman's body. Kwannon came back to her body, or possibly never left, and yet her energy sword appears to be smaller now. Did anybody else notice that?

Do the website designers ever post on here? lol They could settle the debate about the website name.
Also, we haven't seen Kwannon on this site much because she barely ever got any attention in the comics.
I do agree with @Rahsaan, it isn't often that we see Asian characters at the forefront of any comics.

Unknown said...

Why would they give Kwannon all of Betsy's history? Kwannon went on 1 mission with Logan and it wasn't even bonding. He was just ordering her around the whole time. The whole premise of Excalibur is how Betsy gets her friends (Remy/Rogue/Jubes) to help her with this new mutant magic stuff. None of her relationships seem to be magically going to Kwannon. Heck, Kwannon has been shunted off to a book with a bunch of other "disposed" characters. If she was taking all her history and relationships it would make more sense for her to be on Krakoa on one of the main teams.

Unknown said...

And Kwannon definitely showed a lot of strength an discipline in her short time in the 90's. The whole retraining her body, striving to find out the truth about what happened to her and Betsy, revealing she had the Legacy virus, cutting out her own eyes, having Matsuo kill her so she wouldn't die from the virus. She might not have been super fleshed out but there was enough for him to make that assumption and build her groundwork from there.

We need a Kwannon site lol.

You know strategically it would be good for Kwannon to keep calling herself Psylocke....that way she can catch her enemies off guard who think she is Betsy Braddock...then she cuts their heads off no mercy. I think Kwannon was in Betsy all along subconsciously, even when she died and gave Betsy her full powers back. I bet she snuck herself in her mind too. That's why Betsy was "addicted to killing". That was Kwannon in the back of her mind. Kwannon had no attachment to Cyclops and Jean so I can believe that she didnt care if she separated the two lol. Now she's a full character let's see what she does, she could be hardcore lol.

Agreed kinda want her to go hardcore! Make more of a name for herself as a hardcore killer than Betsy. I do also think Betsy’s killer instinct was from Kwannon’s memories. I’m not a big Otherworld fan but hopefully with the stellar Excalibur team it will be good. Hated the Xforces Otherworld story and art. Excited to see what Betsy and the new team get up to and the art looks stunning

Well to be fair the XForce arc focused mostly on Fantomex and Betsy going against her family to defend him so that arc wasnt the greatest.

The Otherworld arc in UXF*** meant to say 😅

Kris Anka's art isn't pretty and it looks soulless. He draws men better and with more detail. It is sad Marvel has a capitalistic obsession with the naked ninja and dismisses good mutant Asians with great mutant powers to instead draw men like flies to the honey. Pussy power seems to be Marvel's easy road to money than quality writing. And that could be a bigger debate about female sexploitation for the feminist movement. Kwannon is a red flag for women's rights undressed as she is and a masturbatory product in comics and media.

Same. Except I always liked Kwannon has a character.

She has Finn the character of a killer prostitute. Coochie-cutter ninja character found in a trash can.

💜 Back when there was only one body before all the madness got even madder. I recall as a kid not being as disturbed by the change when I knew it was still her body and not another woman’s and I appreciated that Jim Lee drew the East Asian version to identifiably resemble the Northern European version to really drive that home. I still sometimes wonder if the Body Wars would ever have happened all these years on message boards if Claremont had never left Marvel and ultimately turned her back physically as planned and still kept her a ninja sans Kwannon ever existing.

Well, doesn't really matter as it's all water under the bridge and now we have two strong women characters that appear set to take on the Marvel Universe. I look forward to seeing how both develop as independent characters. 💜

Granted, the one body race swap was even more problematic like a real ”Yellowface” a la minstrel show and Rachel Dolozel so as an adult today I can capitulate Kwannon’s creation kinda took some of the inflammatory nature away.

Kikoken darling these pics are not iconic they are straight Pornhub and Redtube alley. I'd be grateful if you didn't pollute this blog dedicated to BETSY BRADDOCK the one and original PSYLOCKE with Kwannon porn pics flashing her muff and anus right in our faces.

Lol @Kiki M. Ishola (amazing name btw) u can’t deny Jim Lee’s Psylocke’s fierceness!

Kiki M. Ishola said...

Jim Lee's Kwannon packs a powerful ''Psychic Quif'' that deafens every opponent hearing her mad vag howl and chafe on her cameltoe-clipper. Kwannon can attack revealing her knife in ''Titty Fudge'' style. Her finisher is to suffocate with her face sitting attack called ''Mustache Ride''.

Jim Lee is so talented that he made Wildstorm go bankrupt, destroyed DC Comics with new 52 and now designs bags. So much envy!

Did I detect a hint of racism against my African name and last name Kikoken? Lord save your soul I hope not!

Lol not at all!!!! Loves it! Haha omg I don’t think I ll look at Kwannon’s (Asian Psylocke) outfit in the same way ever again

Ps. I haven’t liked Jim Lee’s art since he left Xmen tbh and Olivier Coipel is my Psylocke artist of choice.

I don't think we should be personally attacking anyone on here. Yes I'm vocal about not caring much for Kwannon but I dont personally attack or insult anyone with name calling and I think this thread has gone a little too far.

Kikoken isnt personally attacking anyone simply sharing their opinion and preference and there shouldnt be anyone attacking them for it.

@Kiki and @Kikoken, you are both correct. Jim Lee’s art is now a hot mess. As I look back on his art as an adult, I think most of what I appreciated about it had to do with Scott Williams’ coloring. Lee actually makes zero effort like most of his 90s cohorts, such as Liefield, McFarlane, Portacio to differentiate characters. They all literally drawn everyone to look the same. If you look at Lee’s time in the X-Mem and compare his depictions of Psylocke, Storm, Rogue, Marvel Girl, Jubilee, Dazzler and any other woman, they pretty much all look the same. Same with his male character renderings. His art is way overrated which I clearly see now as an adult, but didn't as a kid.

Yes, this is a Psylocke website. But Storm is in this awesome drawing too.

What are people's thoughts on this recent interview about Storm in the Hickman era?

Warning: There are spoilers for the House of X comic book series:
