The gist of the story.

Betsy losing the Psylocke and adding Captain Britain makes her Carol Danvers.

Kwannon taking Psylocke makes her Kamala Khan.

Kwannon will have a stolen identity and Marvel doesn't care enough for Asian representation to create something original.

Betsy will take a divorce from the X-Men losing the Psylocke brand name and fall into oblivion not appearing in video games, toy lines and X-Men titles. F*ck f*ck f*ck you Marvel extra much.

@Kiki, you and I usually align, but I respectfully disagree here. I’m with Hickman on this. The literature should absolutely not be concerned with the films, the games, the cartoons, and the toys that are catered to the masses and general appeal beyond comic book readers.

"I think one of the big mistakes that some people make at Marvel Comics is that we are reactive to what they’re doing in the Marvel films," said Hickman. "We should not be taking our creative cues from the direction they’re taking things in the movies. That kind of defeats the point."

I do see your point about Kwannon and would be fine with her having a new code name versus inheriting Psylocke, but I am ecstatic that Elizabeth will be dropping her slave name that Mojo forced on her.

I’m also very pleased to see the New Mutants back together again and in a book!!

Maybe someone will recall during HoX/PoX that Betsy and Kitty should have at least one interaction each with Doug on-panel as two of his closest friends. I don’t think either has since his resurrection. Hell, I’m not even sure if his ex, Rahne has.

FSaker said...

Yes, it would be nice to see them interacting with Doug! As for interactions... well, there was one panel in Second Coming where Betsy screamed his name when X-23 brought him unconscious and carried him. I think that's the biggest interaction they had ever since he was resurrected.

Speaking of HoX/PoX, it just occurred to me that Betsy does have a chance of appearing in them; after all, if she's already Captain Britain in Excalibur #1, Marvel will need to explain how this change happened. Unless she only becomes Captain Britain during Excalibur #1.

As for Kwannon becoming Psylocke, have you guys considered that while Betsy became herself again, Kwannon didn't? I mean, she's in her body, yes, but that body was altered by Spiral to have some of Betsy's physical traits... I guess that should bother me, but since I couldn't care any less about Kwannon (who I think shouldn't even be back to life), it doesn't. But it may bother some of you who are interested in her.

Lex said...

@FSaker I've been wondering for a while now does Marvel even acknowledge that both bodies where kinda blended by Spiral or for general ease(forgetfulness) they just completely swapped?

While I was hoping Kwannon would get a new uniform & possibly codename (Not Revanche or Psylocke) I guess making her a legacy character is the best way to hope people get invested in the book & character.

It's worked for Kamala, Jane, Riri & Miles for different amounts of success.

I was also hoping they'd give them different power signatures & let the butterfly/purple/lilac belong to Betsy. Then again they've let almost everyone use the Phoenix powers & imagery despite it being equated to Jean...

I doubt ayone at Marvel remembers the DNA mixing it was a brief mention in one panel and never referenced again.

In Psylockes mini its acknowledged shes recognized with Kwannons face due to the swap so its pretty much retcon their DNA was mixed.

randybear said...

Agreed and I love the mix of GenX members for fun! Hoping it lasts a while I'm sure Hickman writing will give it a little longevity

I'm too mad to function right now.

And I admire the masculine calmness you guys exhibit.

I just want to bite a throat for thinking that by giving a slave name to an already enslaved Japanese woman, by the Hand and the Mandarin, was a good idea.

Betsy's enslavement to Mojo was a painful story which made her stronger and she has chosen to take that exact pain and transform it into power. That is the definition behind the Psylocke identity defining Betsy's fighter personality and lack of fear. Kwannon didn't break a finger or sweat to earn Betsy's pain and legacy.

Kiki M. Ishola said...

And while we're at it let's do a quick reboot and a clean up to forget the DNA mixing. Fabian Nicieza is cancer of every known form and he started this crappy endless race swapping drama.

Why not Revanche or Haraise for Kwannon. Constantly stealing from Betsy is a frustrating banality. First it was her butterfly effect and purple hair, then her telekinesis and psionic weapons and now her code name for crying out loud.

Kiki M. Ishola said...

Why not let Betsy have the Psylocke identity to be able to go back to the X-Men when Excalibur ends.

Let's be honestly sensible, nobody will accept an X-Man with the code-name Captain Britain into the X-Men.

Psylocke explains Betsy's powers and nature and on the other hand the Captain Britain title is too mighty high to belong with the X-Men. Betsy will be stranded into a niche corner defending the Otherworld and not be able to travel with the X-Men like when she was Psylocke.

Kiki M. Ishola said...

I demand a new identity for Kwannon. Giving her the Psylocke name is unfair to Betsy and Kwannon who is a real nothing without a personality and history. Kwannon will be forever Betsy's bag of shame.

Are the Marvel decision makers so incompetent and blind? This isn't like Carol Danvers and Kamala or Peter Parker and Miles Morales. Betsy and Kwannon are not a legacy thing. They were mistaken on purpose to be the same entity and by giving Kwannon the Betsy costume shreds they prolong that mistake.

Kiki M. Ishola said...

The only acceptable solution is to leave Betsy as Psylocke who can upgrade to Captain Britain only in dire straits. And leave Kwannon as Revanche or choose a Japanese code name from Japanese mythology and culture. Gosh! Not that hard! I've translated Revanche into Japanese and BAM Haraise!

Kiki M. Ishola said...

To comment on the other titles I'm also mad that Storm will be Kitty's lapdog again in the Marauders title. Thank the heavens the editors didn't include Colossus after Kitty left him brokenhearted.

The Excalibur NEEDS Nightcrawler and why not Magik who is a magic user duh!

The New Mutants are looking sharp with the Gen-Xrs.

X-Men and X-Force are weird but I'm looking forward to them.

Fallen Angels are the clone bunch. Kwannon the Psylocke cloner, X-23 the Wolverine cloner and Kid Cable the Cable cloner. HARDEST PASS!

randybear said...

Kiki omg didnt even make the correlation that Fallen Angel's are clones lolol all that's missing is that abomination the clone of a clone Honey Badger ughhh wish she woulda been lost during HoX

Rahsaan said...

Nah. Only Laura is a clone. Baby Nate and Kwannon are not clones. Baby Nate is Old Nate from a different point in time. And Kwannon is a woman who Spiral removed her mind, stuck another woman in her body and then spliced some of said woman's genes into Kwannon's body.

Also, @randy is correct. In the mini, the Japanese cops thought she was Kwannon and wanted to arrest her, and she was disturbed because she no longer had the face of the hero who sacrificed herself on live TV to save all of reality from The Adversary, which was broadcast from Dallas.

Tobias Chatti said...

Fallen Clones rofl. 😆 I didn't sign up for Kwannon to rip off Psylocke. I show tolerance to fictional POC till they try to step on my beloved heroes.

Betsy is Psylocke 'nuff said.

randybear said...

The issue is that when casuals think Psylocke they think "oh the asian chick" they get SO fucking confused I constantly saw after Betsy went back to her body "wtf wait Psylocke isnt Asian?" Or "psylocke is Asian! I'm confused why she white now??"

People are so dumb so I can see why the editors feel like that codename is too deeply ingrained in the masses with the Asian body.

And making Captain Britain female going forward is another win for Disney in the SJW department

Rahsaan said...

@randy,I see your frustration, but regarding the woman Captain Britain... It's a win for us all who love Betsy. It's who Betsy has always wanted to be. I'm not a social justice warrior, but I am all for seeing underrepresented people get their due as I am one. Especially, in a world where fantasy reigns supreme, but many readers still balk when anyone but a white man is the main protagonist doing "masculine" things and looking ane being a certain masculine, white way. I love Betsy, and as a character I love, I'm happy for her like I know her. I'm happy she no longer has to run around wearing another woman's face and being mistaken for her and I am happy that she has decided to reclaim a title she loved versus using a slave name a horrible, exploitative, alien creature forced on her. Now if Bets decides to take back "Psylocke," I'll support her, but I have the feeling she might now after all the trials she's been through make a better Captain than her brother who at times was an inebriated, territorial brute. I'm here for this. I think you might enjoy this after you get over the initial shock of it all. Especially, since you know and appreciate this character's origins and her spirit.

Mixia said...

I'm glad Betsy can finally leave her ninja days behind and pass all the assassin stuff to someone else. I think becoming Captain Britain is good chance for the character to get more development and it is also a good chance to explore her roots.

This really challenges the identity complex between the two of who is the one true Psylocke. As a fan of the original Psylocke, it makes me question whether I was rooting Kwannon this very whole time rather that Betsy as a person. As much as I appreciate Betsy becoming the new Captain Britian, she has never any interest in the family title. I hope Marvel doesn't accidentally damage her reputation as a character like they did with Captain Marvel, because its very imperative they learn from their mistakes from last time.

Anonymous said...

they said they have other "important" things going on with Nightcrawler hence why not on team....he could always eventually join....most books don't reveal everyone on the first cover

Rahsaan said...

@Atomic, that is actually false. She jumped at the the chance to be Captain in Marvel UK. And even in Uncanny 256 when she becomes “Asian,” she remarks that Brian never wanted the mantle and basically got it, because he was the boy.

Rahsaan said...

And that she always wanted it.

Rahsaan said...

Also, regarding the concerns about Betsy flying and being super strong, she actually has done both with her telekinesis while she still went by Psylocke. Like in her mini. In fact if, she uses her powers similarly as Captain Britain to the way she did in “Kill Matsuo’o,” then I approve. Add in her random precognition and we’re on our way.

This new line of X-Men books is disappointing.
"X-Men" and "X-Force" each have random teams with characters that are not that important. They could have included characters like Storm, Monet, Nightcrawler and Emma Frost.
Instead, they repeat characters on both teams and make it all feel cluttered.

Excalibur and Fallen Angels will be compared many times. Excalibur could have had more magical or mythical type characters that compliment Betsy in her new role. I don't know what they are planning to do with Fallen Angels, but does anybody notice that Kwannon's sword is smaller than Betsy's was?
Instead of the latter book, there should have been an All-female X-Men team led by Storm.

I said it before and will say it again...I don't know how Storm (and Emma Frost) will both be taking orders from Kitty Pryde in the "Marauders" book. Kitty had her moment as leader, it didn't work well. Why is Storm only in one book? Why is Storm in the background?

New Mutants is whatever, it would have been more fitting to release that title later and introduce another book to start off with.
