Great art work , love 90's Betsy !

Quite a beautiful cover!

But I wonder why Emma is wearing her black costume; she's the only one in the art who isn't wearing her most iconic costume (then again, I wonder whether her iconic costume would be Whedon's white top, pants and cape or Morrison's microshorts and pieces of fabric covering part of her boobs... while I usually dislike sexualized outfits for heroines, Morrison's Emma looked like a popstar and also fit her personality).

As for Betsy, I know many people here will complain that they went for the 1990s look in the Asian body, but well, it IS her iconic look. And hey, at least she's in the cover, which is more than we can say for Rachel, Jubilee, Dazzler, Hope et al (now if only she could also appear IN THE STORY...).

Nice cover but the colors on Psylocke are dull af. Hair and costume has that brown tint.

Betsy is so visually appealing with the different colors used with her costumes and of course her signature hair color it always bugs me when colorists decide to go drab with her.

Why is Raven on the cover as if she's a hero?

The word iconic for the ninja thong/bathing suit is cringe worthy. It is a trademark of cultural appropriation and yellowfacing. Marvel is owned by Disney and should change its revenue hunting policies that chase after lewdness and racist stereotypes. Disney will send shivers of pride to Asian audiences with the live action film of Mulan. Kwannon's suit sends shivers of shame and facepalming. The omission of the signature purple hair on Psylocke is another insult to the wound reinforcing the change of Betsy into an Asian.

White Queen's sexualization is a part of her agenda as a character. She is the naughty and domineering woman among the mutants. For that Emma is admissible and not the sex toy Marvel made Psylocke to be. Reminds me of Aunt May becoming a bombshell for the new Spider-Man movies.

Rachel, Jubilee and Dazzler have appeared on the launching covers for the HoX and PoX event so they're safe.

When Marvel Studios gives us real X-Men films, I hope Raven the X-Men's Leader, Heart, And Soul is not how the character is portrayed. LOL. And I hope that is not who she is in this relaunch by Hickman. I don't think he'd do us dirty like that.

Jaime Braz said...

@Rahsaan I hope the Jennifer Lawrence Mystique is erased from memory. Mystique is a wild terrorist card in the X-Men world. By making her compassionate and a mother figure they water her down and destroy the soul of her character.

When the Marvel Studios gives us real X-Men films, I pray Betsy is her original white self with character development and not the guest eye candy of Apocalypse. I'd prefer the body swap mess didn't make it into the MCU X-Men films because it harms both Psylocke and Kwannon. Representation in general.

randybear said...

I think Psylocke will more than likely be introduced as Asian when she eventually debuts in the MCU just due to that's what the studios will be familiar with. MCU has already cast many white characters as POC so I can see them easily doing this with Psylocke as opposed to doing the whole body swap she will just debut Asian.

When this happens Psylocke will return to the Asian body in the comics trust me. Similar to how they mandated changes in the comics to mirror the MCU ala Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver being retconned from being mutants to pander to the films.

Jaime Braz said...

@randybear if Psylocke's origin gets retconned this way, she will be a failed poc like Fox's Johnny Storm. It will create more confusion and raised eyebrows for both casual movie goers and hardcore fans, who know about her troubled origin.

Disney and Marvel studios will be caterers to their echo chamber of pandering to false diversity. The choice of casting an Asian actress to play Psylocke will erase an original Asian character Kwannon. The point of diversity is inclusion not a mishmash of two separate characters into one. Both women will lose their heritage and personal histories that made them interesting and viewers will end up with another bland Olivia Munn showcasing her goodies and ninja moves.

More importantly, restoring Elizabeth into her white body in 2018, with the help of an event, only to undo the whole process for ''wet'' money will be the lowest of Marvel and Disney lows. All the fans who raged against yellowface and the abusive nature of the body swap will be disrespected while Marvel will prove themselves hypocrites for giving into lazy male gaze. And of course Marvel will lose a real Japanese woman of martial arts because Kwannon can be introduced anywhere in the MCU, for example in a Shang-Chi movie, The Agents of Atlas, Elektra, Daredevil and so on.

randybear said...

Jamie I 100% agree with you I was just being realistic about what will probably happen.

I would never want Psylockes history to be retconned trust me.

Jaime Braz said...

randybear fear is logical because Marvel and Disney often like to shoot themselves in the foot with controversial and ''bold'' choices.

Why a fan want to have Psylocke's history retconned? If it happened she wouldn't be the heroine we love and care for. So I believe you 1000%. But as fans we shouldn't stay idle to lose two interesting characters with one stone. We can ask Marvel to address the problem and find the least racist and confusing solution for the MCU movies.

Probably going to bring back old school Psylocke during Hickman's run. Possibly a fusion between all her previous outfits.

"Jamie I 100% agree with you I was just being realistic about what will probably happen."

That wouldn't surprise me, either. If that does happen, I hope that she will still be British (I mean, there are people of Asian ancestry who are born and raised in England).

But of course, the ideal situation is to have her exactly like she is now in comics and choose another woman to represent Asians in the X-Men (Armor would be a great choice, I think).

"The word iconic for the ninja thong/bathing suit is cringe worthy. It is a trademark of cultural appropriation and yellowfacing. Marvel is owned by Disney and should change its revenue hunting policies that chase after lewdness and racist stereotypes."

True, but you see, "iconic" doesn't necessarily mean "best"; as bad as the bathing suit is, it is still Psylocke's most recognizable uniform, especially for the casual audience.

And to be fair, I don't think she had that uniform specifically due to "yellowfacing", as there were plenty of caucasian heroines wearing bathing suits at that time as well, such as Carol Danvers, She-Hulk and Elektra (damn, even Sue Storm had one WITH CLEAVAGE for a while). Not to mention that even the women (and men) who had their bodies properly covered back then still seemed to be basically wearing body paint rather than clothes...

@FSaker yes there are American Asians like Jubilee, Cybermancer, Silk, Amadeus and Asians like Sunfire, Armor, Kwannon and Surge. Because ninja Psylocke isn't a real Asian woman she steals the attention away from Jubilee and the rest of real Asian X-women.

It's problematic to show a twin sister for Captain Britain with the appearance of a Japanese woman and based on their father's Otherworld lineage and their mother's British one it gets more impossible. Otherworld is an Irish creation so there is much more diversity in having an Irish magic being falling in love with a British lady and have kids. Ireland and Britain are in conflict for centuries and the original Captain Britain story reconciles Ireland with the UK.

You are right it wasn't about the sexy uniform when other female heroes have worn the same. I can accept Psylocke wearing the bathing suit thong but do so in her Caucasian body. Kwannon can come up with another revealing suit.

Rahsaan said...

@Jaime, I know you are dead serious, but I just flatlined at "Kwannon can come up with another revealing suit."

I'm not even sure that Hickman likes SPylocke enough to go through the trouble of undoing her reclamation of herself and merging her with Kwannon/erasing Kwannon again. In a perfect world, he loves her and will write for her as she is now with her recent self-actualization. While I have recently had my Kwannon interest piqued, I am not sure that she has a place with the X-Men long term, because even now we still have seen little to no progression of her character outside of being tethered to Psylocke, which is unfortunate.

randybear said...

And nothing outside of what we have previous seen or known about her... shes a killer assassin lol great characterization and representation.. 🙄

Rahsaan said...

We haven’t heard even seen her face aside from when Raven mimicked Betsy wearing it to defeat Kwannon.

Slow down guys one strike at a time!

1. Psylocke and Kwannon have to be separated first as characters and second as mutants. Leave Psylocke as an Omega telepath, precog and psi. Make Kwannon's empathy abilities pop on an emotional electromagnetic wave. Green Lantern hasn't invented the use of emotions and anyway Kwannon won't need to put on a ring or create constructs.

2. Kwannon is an assassin and took the oath to hide her face as traditional ninjas do. To no one's surprise her real real costume was sexier. Larocca updated Kwannon's suit though the colors need to be dark as night. This was her original killsuit.

3. Absofreakinlutely I will join the people who will raise hell if the body swap is repeated just to appease the ninja waifu maniacs.

4. Nice observation. If Marvel is wise they will introduce Kwannon as a functioning character in a Shang-Chi movie that is planned to be released. Or any other movie in the Asian corner of the Marvel Universe like Iron Fist, the new Agents of Atlas and Big Hero Six who are Japanese. Their cartoon version was puke.

5. Change Kwannon's freakin code name to something a Japanese person would use. Not Revanche but Haraise.

PoetryInMotion said...

There is no way in hell Marvel would get around to making Kwannon an interesting character. The levels of delusion here are out of this world.

Lex said...

As much hate as the character gets I would've loved that they had done something with Kwannon. Beyond being Logan's not too talkative kill assistant in this final run. If Marvel had the right idea to reform Betsy into a psychic knight a decent writer could've done something for Kwannon.

Ditch the pink/purple uniforms and energy signature for her. Maybe make it a shade of blue. I remember a couple of writers said they where interested in using her on Twitter but got told "no". Wonder was it because the mix of the current run plus the X books ending?

The dumpster fire that Rosenberg is writing has been a horrid way to conclude Uncanny.

Jaime Braz said...

@Atomic Ton I hope Hickman writes the White Psylocke with the added power and fighting moves she gained. In other words what Jim Zub and the Disassembled team have displayed Psylocke to be and do.

Jaime Braz said...

@Rahsaan I have said many times that Kwannon coming back to the X-Men after the body swap nightmare and drama isn't logical. Meeting with Psylocke would do psychological damage to both. So why not develop Kwannon somewhere outside of the X-Men comics? It's high time we moved on from the Fabian Nicieza crap. At least this artist brought back the curls on Kitty Pryde.

Jaime Braz said...

@Kiki M. Ishola In the past I stressed the need for Psylocke and Kwannon to be differentiated in appearance - White with purple hair and blue eyes for Betsy and Japanese with black eyes and hair for Kwannon.

Also if you go and read past comments of mine you will see me talking about making Kwannon into a mood stone mutant without psychic knives and butterflies. Haraise is a cool moniker for her nice job. I'll go search for the meaning.

Jaime Braz said...

@Lex Yes! Ditch the purple colors and butterfly signature for Kwannon. I've never seen ninjas wear anything other than black to help them blend in the darkness.

The psychic and telekinetic powers belong to Psylocke so Kwannon is stealing. What if the Crimson Dawn was the one responsible for reanimating Kwannon without a soul, therefore give her the crimson scar on one eye and shadow teleportation. Ninjutsu and ninpo have a darkness theme.

Not to forget about the Sapphire Styx hypothesis. Sapphire Styx exploded and lost her body when Psylocke saved and delivered the souls Sapphire Styx had consumed. So Sapphire Styx might be inhabiting Kwannon's body and suffer from memory loss. Sapphire Styx speaks Japanese and Chinese.

Rosenberg was a bad choice for the X-Men. Too much death and depression.

jaime, then have psylocke ditch that useless psi sword, she stole her psy blade and psy constructs from kwannon. she also stole her telekinesis from kwannon who got it accidentally from jean. honestly she would be more interesting with the way she used her original powers but more skillfully now, like psychoblast. right now she looks like a pale comparison of the 90s kwannon version, who is so much more striking and appealing and clearly why they went with her on this cover. the new psylocke adds nothing when you throw her in the mix with the other ladies

Unknown said...

when you see the ladies together in this mix, you can totally see why they went with kwannon psylocke who adds something different whereas current-fake-original-body psylocke adds nothing new or interesting.

this tells me that MCU should introduce kwannon-psylocke! adds something special whereas betsy no longer does.
