Omg is Storm taking lead? That would be awesome :)

So... This shield and sword it's gonna be the actually Betsy's weapons permanently...

She looks like a Warrior Queen!

Rahsaan said...

I hope Ororo is the leader. I actually dig the fact that she calls them Elizabeth and Sam. At this point, I think code names are kinda played out. Everyone knows their legal identities by now anyway.

Love seeing Storm lead again! Loving this art too. Love the curly wet look in the last image lol

Is this Psylocke in her other body with Excalibur? I've seen this image before but forgot about it, if it is, then she's actually used it before. It might need to be copied and pasted.

@X-Man, that sure looks like Excalibur to me. If so, all the folks here who are big mad and claiming she is now being written as a stereotype can be will be even more livid if you’ve provided evidence that she had her English sword while wearing Kwannon’s face, because she always identified as a European woman. 😂

X-Man said...

@Rahsaan lol she definitely did, especially after Kwannon took any part of her that was influencing Betsy away after she died.

I mean we can keep focusing on who Psylocke WAS or we can just focus on who she has been changing into these past few years. If we did that, then we wouldn't have lost ninja Psylocke. At least ninja Psylocke could wield whatever and it didn't look forced. Let's see the princess version carry a kitana :P

So glad to see Storm take the lead again.
A Queen simply doesn't take orders.

She looks awesome in this. Wish she covered herself in some Psychic armor. WOuld fit the Psychic Knight look.

Finn said...

She looks really cool !

Unknown said...

The more I see this, the sillier it looks. She maybe back in her Caucasian body, but she's not herself anymore.

Rahsaan said...

@Unknown, this is sillier to you than everything she did in Exiles as “herself?” For real?

Man, oh man. 10 issues and she will still be using the sword and shield.

There is no point in her even manifesting the psychic "knife" anymore. In fact, it is my belief, now, that Psylocke will stop manifesting it as much.

My thoughts: I think Marvel is going to give Psylocke these new weapons to solidify her new identity as some kind of psychic conjurer. We'll see her mostly using martial weapons but as a big gun I think we'll later see larger creations like the big butterfly again. This would give her something mostly different from all the other psychics and placing her in a nice little niche corner to call her own.

No longer any need for a knife. That was a part of her past life that I'm certain Marvel wants to put behind them. This new Psylocke won't need that.

She also won't need to be a ninja anymore. She is still a warrior. She can still fight. She just won't use anything ninja-like. The psychic knife and ninja skills are useless to this new Psylocke. That's not who she is anymore.

But that is who Kwannon can still be.

Psylocke has bee trapped in an Asian body for nearly three decades now. In publication she's been in that body far longer than she's been Caucasian. Her appearance while in the body of Kwannon has become iconic and Marvel isn't going to just throw that away.

So we have both versions of Psylocke.

Marvel gets it's cake and eats it.

The character has been doing silly stuff ever since she decided to lick motor oil off of Cyke’s face and since she decided to engage Sabertooth in physical altercation in a closed off area despite having previous experience taking him out solely with her telepathy during Inferno. Or when she was telpeporting and flying like Superman in Exiles. Or when she was swinging paychically constructed maces and shooting with spychic bow and arows in all-women X-Men. And she definitely looked silly during her “As you wish” phase after the first Sisterhood.

I love our girl, but she has been doing silly stuff since Claremont left right after at the beginning of the Blue/Gold “renaissance.” 😂

Also, she’ll look fine with a psychic kitana. Relatively sepaking since telekinetic weapons all look silly. She’ll lookfine if she uses one again, because Revanche who looks just like her when walking around with her face used to use one. Well, again fune being relative, because Revanche looked silly with a psychic sword too. The only psi-weapon that does not look silly is the psi-blade, but Marvel can never not be gratuitous.

Smh at all of these Complaints about Betsy. This new era literally JUST started. Can't she get new abilities and growth too? I don't understand what is the big deal of her psychic weaponry. I personally love it,and it does not make her weak by any means. The hardcore fans should know by now, she is a very powerful telepath and that isn't going to change. #teampsylocke #brittishorasian

Rahsaan said...

@TheBlackPrint, I agree with the statement that was made before that the most recent time that she was written well was by Remender without all the tricks for show with telekinesis and psychic weaponry. She used her intelligence, her telepathy, martial arts skills and real weapons. That was all that was needed

I’m giving this trio if writers a shot as they seem to be doing some cool stuff, like re-elavating Storm to leadership and including marginalized characters that have great potential, like Polaris and Northstar. However, I do get the impression that much of their style comes from the gratuitous 90s where everything was extra versus the character-driven nuance of the 80s. So far Psylocke has only been written well by two or three writers since crossing over from Marvel UK, Claremont; Davis (who actually may have only written her in UK) and Remender. (Not a fan of Bunn’s writing of the character.) I think these writers may be writing all these characters base on the stuff we saw from 1990s to 2010s scripters who seem to prefer even-driven story versus character-driven ones.

Who I would really love to see get their hands on Psylocke and the X-Men is Brian K. Vaughan if he is a fan. I think he’d write them all pretty solid.

Again, I dig that she is being kept in character with her own face again. I just think showy powersets are really unnecessary and make the books cartoonish. That’s actually the word that I was looking for. So far the new Uncanny feels cartoonish to me. I was hoping this reinvention would harken back to some of the grittier style we had in the 80s, but it all feels very X-Men: The Animated Series. Not just for Elizabeth, but for the entire cast.

Hoping to be pleasantly surprised as we proceed.

Rahsaan said...

The only writer who has not written these characters like cartoons in the last two decades is Remender.

Rahsaan said...

Also, the art is s big part of it. While decent, it too feels cartoonish. A big reason why Remender’s wrining wirked so well was Opeña’s penciling. It looked realistic and was very emotive and nuanced and beautiful.

I'm not a fan of her having TK, I feel like they never made it clear that this is in fact her latent tk and not TK from Jean that she just retained. I rather her powerset be Telepathy and precognition. However, if they limit her TK to low level and just weapons/protection, I think I can accept that. I don't want to see her flying or "shattering mountains" lol.

Rahsaan said...

@Unknown, I agree. Telekinesis has always felt forced on her. I recall the first issue when "revolution" started after the six-month gap and she was in a space suit helping repair a ship wileding telekinesis and flying. I felt very odd in a bad way. Mind you, all of "revolution" was bad, but I recall really not feeling TK Psylocke and Crimson Dawn Phoenix. Bets can explore her love of flying when she pilots the Blackbird as a licensed pilot.

randybear said...

@X-Man, I agree. I never liked the TK and it makes no sense that it would transfer to her real body.

If we think about it, from what little we know of how it happened, Jean and Psylocke switched powers, but it had absolutely nothing to do with Psylocke's psyche or her body (Kwannon's at the time)

I think they should have left Psylocke a pure telepath and left the TK in Kwannon's body giving Kwannon the TK (instead of Kwannon apparently now being a telepath)

Collinwood1000 said...

@Rashaan Chisolm we agree on a lot of things.

However as far as recent writers, I have to disagree. Mike Carey, writes just as well as Rememnder and he loved Psylocke. He wanted her as a main, but couldn't because of Stupid Matt Fraction, but he got Betsy very well.

I thought Bunn's Psylocke was pretty decent too. And i loved Gillen's Psylocke as well. She was very powerful and regal in his short run.

I HATED, LOATHED, and DESPISED Humprhies Psylocke. Hell his whole run tbh. (That Fanotmex female cluster love story should never be acknowledged.)

randybear said...

@TheBlackprint, actually Carey was denied Psylocke because CC was still using her in Exiles, not Fraction. Carey's XMen run began in 2006, CC didn't lose Psylocke until 2009.

And I agree I love how Gillen wrote Psylocke and he is the writer who began the special dynamic between Psylocke and Magneto and I agree Humphries is probably one of the worst things to have happened to Psylocke. It's no mystery that entire run has been completely ignored.

Rahsaan said...

@TheBlackprint and @CmX, thanks. I actually forgot about Gillen and Bunn, but I still think they pale in comparison to Remender's take on the character. He seemed to be the most knowledgeable and respectful of her entire run as Marvel charcater even pre-United States crossover. As for Carey... He is all right with her when he wants to be.

What are your thoughts on Yost? The only thing I really dug about him writing her was that he used her telkinesis in the best way I've seen it used ever to accent her fighting not to act like Superman. However, as pointed out, we have seen Remender write her intelligently sans telekinetic showboating and using her telpathy quite astutely along with her honed martial arts skills and of all the writers, he really got her wit.

Collinwood1000 said...

As far as I see it, all of the telepaths (The very powerful ones) have all specialized areas that gives them psychic individuality.

Charles - The most powerful male.
Jean - The Phoenix. Most powerful mutant being.
Emma - Diamond, Very skillful telepath.
Rachel - Time Travel Phoenix Weilding Telepath.
Farouk - King of the Astral plane.
Legion - Multiple Personality Disorder with different forms of Telepathy.

And Our Psylocke. Her Telepathy has ALWAYS been Physical. Psycho Blasts. Psychic Butterfly. Psychic Weapons. Hell her telepathy is the reason why I fell in love with the character. She has always been the most unique and that is facts. Her Telekinesis was physical too (i.e.augmenting her strength, rearranging molecules, extending her agility).

But to each their own.

Collinwood1000 said...

@CMX thanks for the correction. But I wish Carey would have had her on a full time basis.

@Rashaan I personally love Yost writing Betsy. Her one shot was very good in my opinion, and it was probably the beginning of the rebirth of Psylocke as far as good characterization goes.

I also agree that when I think of her Telekinesis, Yost and Carey demonstrated her abilities the best.

And lets not forget about Brian Wood. He wrote a badass Psylocke too. She was the stealthiest in his run. I don't apologize for loving her as ninja (British or asian).

Collinwood1000 said...

BTW CMX and Rashaan,

I am LOVING that for the first time in years, we have Storm, Psylocke, Jean, and Lorna on a team. Talk about Claremont Amazon overload. lol

Really hoping Betsy and Jean become besties like they both are with Ororo.

@CmX @Rahsaan, I Thought so too! Someone else is getting our girl! ;)

X-Man said...

Good article. Only gripe I have is she didn't actually lose her psychic knife like it suggests lol. She used her tk weapons after trying telepathy first. @CmX ita on the TK comments.

Rahsaan said...

Nah. The author states in the final paragraph that shel still use it. I think the article’s title is just meant as click-bait.

“While several of this issue's variant covers indicate that Psylocke will still use smaller psionic daggers, Psylocke's new weapons reflect how she's changed during her time with the X-Men. While she still has her psychic butterfly, Psylocke also keeps the warrior's killer instinct that her time in Kwannon's body helped awaken. Now, Betsy is channeling dueling aspects of her time as an aristocrat, X-Man and ninja assassin into a unified whole that feels like a natural progression for the character.”

Bennie Boy said...

Betsy looks like Diamondback now... Hope there'll be chance for them to duel or even spar soon... 😁

metalgorgomon said...

I think the article made a big deal of Betsy's new weapons. She's bee, conjuring numerous psy weapons before: knife, katana, bow, crossbow, morning star even Gatling guns!
Some of them didn't have anything to do with her being Ninja at all.

For me, Marvel need to stop making as if Betsy is different now. It's only her appearance that differ from before (reverted), but they should focus that this is the Betsy we all love for the last 30 years. A telepathic woman who kick a** !

X-Man said...

I'm not sure its actually Marvel. I think it's just various articles and some fans lol. Marvel pretty much has her still being a bada$$ woman who is formidable both mentally as well as physically from what I've seen so far.
