Jordan D. White Confirms Plans for Psylocke in a Post-Hickman World

When the X-Men books were relaunched in 2017 with the ResurrXion line, Psylocke was nowhere to be seen in the initially announced lineups. It was only three months after the relaunch that Betsy Braddock found a home in the pages of "Astonishing X-Men".

It's now 2019, and the X-Line is about to be relaunched again, this time spearheaded by writer Jonathan Hickman with two six-issue series called "House of X" and "Powers of X" running from late-July through September, which will then introduce a wave of new books in October to be announced at this year's San Diego Comic-Con.

As in RessurXion's initial rollout, Psylocke is conspicuously absent from any promotional image, covers or interior art released so far. When questioned about Psylocke's absence, editor Jordan D. White reassured fans, confirming that there are plans for Betsy Braddock. What are your hopes for this new era?

I'm curious if the xmen will be rebooted or tinkered with as far as their continuity. I feel like editorial let Rosenberg etc do whatever because Hickamn plans on perhaps cherry picking what is canon after his event. I think that's why the xmen were erased by XMan and why so many characters are callously being killed off nearly every issue of Uncanny. I think most if not all will be resurrected or reintroduced post Hickman's house and powers minis. Could he wrong but from the previews we've seen the costumes nor the setting makes any sense I think the state of the characters and lore will be in a major flux when Hickan takes the reigns.

Good to know this. I truly hope they leave her as is and we move forward. But I do hope she one day moves away from the X-men and maybe onto another team for a while. It'd be nice since she didn't actually start off as a mutant.

Becareful what you wish for ever since Rogue strayed off to the Avenhers shes become quite irrelevant to the Xtitles the last few years. I'd hate for the same to happen to Betsy.

You have a point. But man she needs room to shine.

@Randy, word on Rogue! I love Rogue and I’m about to stop caring about her. As for Psylocke, the last time she was part on another team, the Exiles, she too almost became irrelevant.

And I’m also pretty psyched at the likelihood that Hickman’ll bring Sunspot back into the fold as he loves him and Roberto should be with the Xs; not the As. I’d love to see him and Monet interact as they’re both cocky and rich. I wonder if they’d clash or hit it off. And Hickman loves writing both.

It's a pity that he didn' say if Psylocke will appear in House of X and/or Powers of X. Sure, they're both limited miniseries, but I still hope she'll be part of them somehow.

As for Marvel having plans for her, I don't think they would give her another body swap just to send her to editorial limbo after the first arc of the current UXM run and the AoXM event anyway.

And yes, I also hope Rogue and Sunspot return to the X-Men; they belong with their family. Although Sunspot at least got an interesting run with the New Avengers (and he got more attention there than he would get among the X-Men during that time). Rogue's time with the Avengers did nothing favorable to her, either in the Marvel universe or with the readers; I'd say she even feels unimportant to the X-verse by now (and she used to be an A-list X-Woman, only behind Storm and Jean...).

Yeah I'm still bitter af she wasnt allowed to he put on Mike Careys team cause CC would not budge

randybear said...

What happened to Sunspot? He was mentioned as dead or something by Karma in the latest Uncanny. She ran down list of their friends and he was mentioned but i dont recall him being killed off? Unless I didnt understand the line.

I agree but I'd like to continue seeing her with the xmen especially after House and Powers because it's supposed to be a start of a new era of stories and ideas and I think the fatigue with Psylocke (if any) is her stories have been kinda boring. She has deal with the Arcangel persona for how long now? Seems like shes Warren's watch dog since UXF ended. Like Hickman mentioned the stories are repeating themselves. Psylocke doesnt need to leave the xmen she needs to be involved in fresh new stories not rehashes

@randybear I have the same feeling about what is happening at the moment with Rosenberg. Everything will wrap up and make sense around the Age of X-Man and if Nate is really dead. Hickman will tie loose ends and streamline the X-Men continuity to erase errors and mischaracterizations bad writers left on various members of the X-Men.

I also think that if Betsy as Psylocke takes a break from the X-Men it will make her irrelevant and alienate a large portion of her fanbase. However she can be in two places at the same time because it's comics. As long as her side hustle title doesn't clash with her full-time X-job.

@Rahsaan If Hickman wrote Karma into his story he would have had to play with four billionaires counting Warren, Roberto and Monet. Roberto doesn't pair well with Monet because her cockiness and straight face attitude rubs against his adamant and impish nature.

@FSaker on the promotional art of House and Powers of X I saw Dazzler, mohawk Storm, Jubilee and Gateway. I suppose Hickman is a fan of the 80's that made the X-Men into a comic juggernaut. So if we get the 80's Betsy with her warrior powers and skills of today the combination will be the ultimate Psylocke experience. Only Rogue is missing to complete the X-Ladies Outback quintet.

Jaime Braz said...

@randybear yeah I read that too about Roberto passing away but I thought Rosenberg lost count of his killing spree or he killed Sunspot in the War of the Realms tie-in.

I hope that the character of X-Man is killed off. He is one of those 90s creations that is really applicable as ongoing. I think making him a big bad and then permanently killing him off works well. I also am totally fine having Kid Cable around in place of Nate and Old Nathan as it feels more fitting to have a teen as Scott’s son.

Regarding the Hickman series, one thing I am supremely glad about is Jean losing het current awful uniform. I know the green skirt and yellow mask is a way throwback and totally impractical, but it is a step up from that Sentinel-looking number she had in Red and during Uncanny. Ultimately, I hope she gets a good functional look. I do dig the uniform that the art has Scott in!

Also, kudos to everyone on ignoring the troll bait posted in one of the comments above by an anonymous person. This is how we have constructive conversation, including debate and theorizing sans silly bickering. 💜

@Rahsaan Nate Grey is a powerful Omega mutant and having him on the side of the X-Men makes it easy like having the phoenix force in Jean. I never imagined that Marvel would let go of X-Man due to the popularity of AoA in the edgy 90's. Cable is muffled by the Techno Organic Virus and his connection to Madelyne Pryor is something that creates tension between Cyclops and Jean. Cable's origin although complicated is more interesting than Nate's but Nate is the closest to a biological son for Scott and Jean. Half of me will miss him if so and half won't.

I agree with you on Marvel Girl's original gold and green costume. The 90's padded suit inspiration with the swimsuit imprint needs to go to forget bad style choices of that era. The green Phoenix costume can't be outdone.

I was just being real I love Psylocke but it seems time again she is put aside or messed with.

@Unknown you fail to hide your love for Psylocke and her original Brit bones. Your presence here yells your care and worry about her future. No one holds grudges for debates that heat up sometimes.

No X-Man needs overexposure and Psylocke will be benefited by best laid plans. Jean Grey, Emma Frost and Rogue have been starring in many teams and books causing fatigue to fans.

Psylocke from her first appearance was a foxy dominatrix who will end up a fetish sex-doll like Emma if used and abused by bad writers. Hickman is able to find the right voice for her.

I hope they can notify future artists what her core design elements are.
Tired of seeing black hair/ wrong hues of costumes where no one would do the same to Jean or Storm.
That’s my comment. That’s all
