That close-up is beautifully fearsome.

That is an awesome cover! Definitely one of the nicest solo Psylocke covers in a while IMO

WTF! Where did you see straw hair and Jeffree Star noses?! Psylocke is tha Queen in this cover! You're a party pooper orchidd go wear pampers! Don't forget to clip them on with a fancy brooch.

randybear said...

It's a variant cover that you will probably never run across in your life. You'll live.

Don’t hate me, hate the measly artist. lol

If you’re going to soend time developing hue & value if a human face, the last thing you want to do is have a flat layer of unshaded, blocked-out ‘hair ‘ with African proportioned nose on an obvious Asian character.

Don’t be selfish and make this about opinions. Move right along no one’s addressing you, it’s free speech. Wallow in your truth.

Kiki M. Ishola said...

Oooooh someone needs glasses ASAP! It's a B-black-orchid-D!

No hue problems, ''African'' hair and ''Asian'' character on the pic you looney tunes. You are being ridiculous little flower and extremely racist to Blacks and Asians. Keep mouthing your high brow talk party pooper. G-R-E-A-T C-O-V-E-R! And keep your saltiness to yourself Drama Queen!

@bblackorchidd I think you write nitpicky things for the sake of nitpicking. The artwork is stunning.

May I suggest you present to the Psylocke community a better version of the original cover drawn by you, without inadequate styles? Only if you are a better artist than the astonishing Jenny Frison who nails Wonder Woman and Xena covers. Jenny Frison's talent has nothing to do with you feeling bitter and against Betsy being again a Caucasian female.

Rahsaan said...

@bblackorchidd, no shade, but a genuine question was she your Psylocke the two-thirds of the time when she was supposed to be East Asian and drawn to look Northwestern European?

Alex said...

It's a nice cover. I haven't bought a single issue of anything Age of X-Man related but I'd get this just for the cover. Probably one of the better ones she's had since the unfortunately short Uncanny relaunch.

Vigmed said...

I love the colors.

But the nose, her nasal ala, ruined the entire picture for me.

I like the pic but, ugh. It could have been perfect.

Rahsaan said...

@Vigmed, the nose does look like one that wouod fit better on Ororo or Cecilia or Frenzy as bblackoechidd pointed out. It does look like a black person’s nose. That being said, I am not mad. No one really made a stink with Betsy wore Kwannon’s East Asian body and that Asian body was more often than not drawn with European features, so if womeone draws the European body with a fuller West African nose this time around, I’m not too mad as we got 20+ years of the East Asian body typically being rendered with Northwestern European features, including eyes, skin color, nose, hair texture all in varying combinations. 😀💜

Also, this artist who is a white woman draws all her characters of all backgrounds with full features, a nice change from characters always being drawn with narrow features as it that is the only phenotype. 💜

Rahsaan said...

And there are people from every continent with both full and narrow features as we’ve discussed when discussing racial constructs.

Alexis said...

She reminds me more of Domino than Psylocke

People make a mountain out of a molehill today. And for the wrong reasons. It hasn't occurred to anyone here fussing about nothing, that the psychic knife shining on one side of the nose makes it look wider and the shade on the other side makes it appear smaller? Same as bright clothes that make you seem larger and dark make you thinner. Optical illusion. The artist is aware of physics, so give her a round of applause!

Human eyes can detect bulges on a body thanks to lighting effects. We can see a bulging nose because light reveals its contours. Hiding in the shade reduces the lighting cues and conceals a big part. Human eyes have the tendency to see dark objects as smaller. The illusion has to do with how the visual system operates through neurons sensitive to light things and neurons that are sensitive to dark things. When neurons sensitive to dark are exposed to a light background with dark shapes on it the contrast between the two grows. Light objects on a dark background trigger a greater response in these neurons. In the darkness eyes need to gather all the light they can get and therefore they evolved that way for hunting. The same reaction is triggered by something light on a dark background. During the daylight dark objects are easily visible and tend to look smaller. It's all in the neuronal non-linearity of the human eyes.

Hopefully, nobody notices a booger on her nose with a closer look.

Vigmed said...

Here's the thing. Because the nose stood out so much, TO ME, it led me to see other things that are wrong with the cover that I do not want to discuss at length.

@Jaimie Braz, You are not wrong. Mostly.

If her hand was any kind of light source there could not be that dark a prominent shadow across her face. The hand would have to be raised higher.

Simply put, her face is drawn asymmetrical. The two halves of her face are not the same. It is not an issue of color and lighting. They just are not entirely the same.

That said, I do believe it was intentional, and I believe the hand was added later.

And I do still like it.

I said what I said...

nothing will change with what anyone chooses to perceive on their own. audacity to tell someone to view it the way *you* see it, not happening, greasy pig neck

bblackorchidd said...

@ Rahsaan , yes she was always my Psylocke from long ago until this atrocity of a cluster f* of random bad art & design choices
thanks for being real in here, sir

Well little orchid you made audacious farting noises with your mouth! We were all very pleased to smell and hear them. Not really. Time you took your racial hodgepodge Psylocke of the past and your bad taste in art to a walk of shame. Butterfly kisses and fisticuffs!

FSaker said...

I don't intend to get involved in the discussion, so I'll just say that I like this cover. I think Betsy looks great in this art!

By the way, remember that the UXM solicitations seem to indicate the Asian body (Kwannon, Sapphire Styx, part of Betsy's own mind or whoever is controlling it) is in the Mutant Liberation Front? Well, according to UXM #13, Hope is leading this group and Banshee is also there, so I guess it's not a villain group as I thought it would be...

(I still hope that, in case Kwannon really returned, she'll be killed for good this time. And Rosenberg, please don't kill Hope; you did enough damage killing Loa, Blindfold and Strong Guy)

Rahsaan said...

@FSaker, what makes you think that part of Betsy is still in that body? The body woke up speaking Japanese. Betsy doesn't speak Japanese from what I recall was canon in the Revanche saga when Revanche could read it and Psylocke could not. The only time I recall Betsy speaking an Asian language was when she washed up amnesiac on the shores of China and was pulling Mandarin from Hand employees' minds before they presented her to Matsu'o. Also, I think Marvel has learned the lesson to stop splitting Bets' psyche with others and having the dual psyche share a body as that was so poorly written in the 90s.

FSaker said...

Yeah, I know it's a very slim and unlikely possibility (and I'm not even sure if I LIKE this possibility); it's just that at this point we have no idea of who is the mind in the Asian body, so all possibilities should be considered.

I do prefer the possibility that Sapphire is in the Asian body than the possibility that Kwannon is back, though (not to mention it makes much more sense - plus, Sapphire is Asian and even if Japanese isn't her native language, she could have absorbed the knowledge from one of her many victims).

Oh well, we'll find out the answer next month, I guess. If it's Kwannon, I hope Hope (pun intended) will shoot her in the face with a rocket launcher.

Jaime Braz said...

@FSaker there are people who are not comfortable with Betsy coming back home to her Caucasian body and want her imprisoned inside an Asian costume made of sexy meat. Betsy's comfortable isn't their comfortable and I more than agree with Rahsaan Chisolm on the ''so poorly written in the 90s Betsy'' comment.

Writers desperately wanted to orientize Elizabeth with kimonos, qipaos, ninjawear, katanas and Asian mysticism (Crimson Dawn) but it isn't her heritage. Otherworld, knighthood and espionage is Psylocke's heritage. Fans whining about how ugly this cover looks and how bad Jenny Frison's art is, do it out of spite for their lost Kwannon.

Kwannon has been a Chin Lung and Egg Fu spoof for Psylocke that making her a hero all of a sudden doesn't sit well. I want Kwannon with the Hand or in the Hellfire Club. Mostly want Sapphire Styx inside her body because she is more interesting and dangerous than Kwannon. In the prospect Marvel makes Kwannon and Sapphire Styx a Two-Face villain with literally two Asian women sharing one body, one moral and one vile, its a win-win.

FSaker said...

Jaime, your idea is very interesting, but do you really think Marvel should have both Kwannon and Sapphire inside the Asian body, rather than just Sapphire?

I really don't want Kwannon back. Although after reading your comment, I guess it'd be okay if she joined the Hand and became an antagonist to Daredevil and the Defenders (are they even together anyway? I kinda liked the Defenders as an urban counterpart to the Avengers...) rather than the X-Men. Maybe she could be interesting if Marvel keeps her away from the X-Books (unless for serving as a justification for an occasional Psylocke/Daredevil or X-Men/Defenders crossover). As long as she doesn't mess up even more with Psylocke's background, that's fine.

Jaime Braz, (glistening greasy pig neck) you are one loose-screwed waste of flesh on this earth to assume people are mad there’s a Caucasian Betsy again. It’s just frankly BAD ART period. You probably deem Greg Land this generation’s Da Vinci, n’est-ce pas? lol

Pretty sure you’re thinking female Asian sexy meat is desired by someone else in the room, not happening here...lol

The official Mahmud Asrar Costume is superior to the atrocity called a costume ‘featured’ in the age of x-men, and AGAIN, all subsequent depictions of such have been subpar.

There’s a few things wrong with your highly ignorant little paragraph, but I should just save my time trying to explain to a narrow-minded dimwit who’s blinded by ‘purdy colors on paper’

Next time, don’t try to analyze why bad art isn’t bad art by assuming race cards, dimwit

Jaime Braz said...

@bblackorchidd first of all, thank you very much for your brazen and horrible language, extremely telling about your personality and type of human quality. Whoever resorts to derogatory remarks instead of a civil discord does so because he/she is naked as a newly dressed emperor without an ounce of argument. I accept facts no cussing and bad taste in art. You support the yellow-washed Psylocke when the majority loves the original Betsy. You can fantasize all you want about your sexy ninja waifu but society has seen into the tricks of cultural appropriation and how terrible they are for character development in fiction.

Kiki Mink has a point when he/she addresses you, although does it in the same manner you speak and write. Rahsaan Chisolm asked you a question about Betsy being trapped in an Asian body while drawn with mixed phenotypes (Caucasian with Asian). We all wait for your answer to his question ''Was she your Psylocke the two-thirds of the time when she was supposed to be East Asian and drawn to look Northwestern European?'' Why are you suddenly so offended by Frison's and Mahmud Asrar's art if you haven't a problem with Betsy being British again?

I don't speak French and I'm not a big fan of Greg Land, but he still can draw circles around you. My challenge is still in effect, draw a better version of Jenny Frison's cover and present it to the Psylocke community.

Jaime Braz said...

@FSaker I prefer Kwannon to keep away from the X-Men titles too because the confusion and comparisons to Psylocke will keep coming. In the new Uncanny X-Men cover Kwannon steals Psylocke's colors. Purple, magenta, pink and violet belong to Betsy. Kwannon can wear black and red and be another Elektra with empathic abilities. She can pop up in Shang-Chi, Iron Fist, Daughters of the Dragon, Daredevil issues. However I still view her as a villain better. We know much more about Kwannon's past than Sapphire Styx's, so I hope Sapphire Styx drives the Japanese body to learn more about her past.

The chances Sapphire Styx living inside the body are slim for Marvel doesn't want to repeat body swap disasters. The gist is that Kwannon still exists because she garnered a fanbase due to her revealing costumes and killing obsession infecting Betsy's mind.

bblackorchidd said...

Damp filth, You dumb illiterate ignorant bastard, I said I loved Mahmud’s costume. Fuck you. What makes you think I think the Asian Psylocke costume is sexy in any regard?
I’m NOT interested in women let alone an Asian woman in any sexual fashion, get over your completely wrong viewpoints & aloof manner.

That art is bad and that’s the end all. Period. Get a life ‘Hi may’

Jaime Braz said...

@bblackorchidd I didn't notice you are a fan of Mahmud Asrar's Psylocke costume in all your cursing and hate. That is a wonderful turn of events!

You see how much confusion creates spewing negativity and profanity toward others? Next time tone down the use of damp filth, illiterate ignorant bastard, dimwit etc. Is glistening greasy pig neck considered an insult? Wasn't aware of it. Are you a southerner?
