Hunt For Wolverine: Mystery in Madripoor #1 Spoilers

Spoilers: Kitty Pryde suspects Magneto has stolen Wolverine’s body and brings together a team of Psylocke, Storm, Rogue, Jubilee and Domino to investigate him in Madripoor. Betsy notices Rogue has been close to Magneto, and that he’s managed to survive their last encounter so there’s a lot at stake. Domino offered to help but Kitty’s not willing to share details with her. Kitty asks Betsy to mindwipe Domino if things get out of hand. Psylocke is not comfortable, but Kitty doesn’t care. In Madripoor, the ladies are welcomed by Magneto himself, who assures them he has nothing to hide. Erik sets up at meeting at the King’s Impresario Restaurant at 10pm. The villain Mindblast is watching them from afar and informs her master that the X-Men have arrived.

The X-Ladies head to the Princess Bar, which was once frequented by Patch/Wolverine. Kitty informs the bartender they’re Patch’s friend. The bartender brings them to Patch’s secret room, where Logan has kept souvenirs and memories. Storm comes across an amulet she had gifted Logan after they joined the X-Men. Rogue finds an old letter from Carol Danvers. In the letter, Carol tells Logan how she disapproves of the Professor accepting Rogue at the school, feeling betrayed. Rogue cries. Psylocke remembers that during one sparring session, Logan told her he doesn’t care about the afterlife and will just live his life the same way he has ever lived. Kitty tells the ladies to get dressed and they prepare to meet Magneto.

At the King’s Impresario Restaurant, Magneto has set a table for them. Psylocke realizes it’s a trap and that “Magneto” was never there to begin with. The psychic Mindblast was pretending to be him all along. Mindblast knocks out Storm first. The X-Men are welcomed by Viper and her Femme Fatales: Knockout, Bloodlust and Snake Whip (Whiplash). Knockout takes Rogue by surprise. Bloodlust targets Domino. Snake Whip captures Jubilee. When Psylocke is about to attack Mindblast, she is ambushed by Sapphire Styx, who drains her lifeforce. Kitty Pryde phases and manages to rescue Domino and Jubilee, fleeing the scene. Alas, Viper and the Femme Fatales have captured Storm, Psylocke and Rogue.

I was pleasantly surprised by the art. I didn't like this artist style previously in XMen Blue, but he really did try out a new style. I would have much preferred Bachalo was still able to draw this.. oh well, hopefully he can draw the XMen again soon with Psylocke.

We know Betsy's "death" will be over by the end of this mini, so no big deal.

It does suck that three of the main X-Women have to fall just to make Kitty look good. I really hope at least Jubilee and Domino will get to do something instead of becoming more people Kitty has to save to show readers how awesome she is...

(the funny thing is, allegedly Kitty's main appeal with the readers is how she's more approachable and "down to earth"... then we remember she's often portrayed as a technology genius, a martial arts master, a perfect leader - despite her constant fails mentoring the time-displaced O5 -, a gorgeous woman... how is that "down to earth"??)

Not surprised Viper is in this as she has history to Logan as well. Donr understand why Kitty always gets away but not Betsy even here. I can't wait for what's Next and honestly glad to see Betsy and Domino work togeyher after X-Force. I wonder if there will be some tense moments between Domino and Kitty ? add Betsy to this since she didn't like the idea to knock Domino out. This is actually not a waste to me and I love it so far

Yeah, Psylocke looked pretty stupid here. She was written kinda amateur.. she didn't pick up on the illusion at all. You would think she would be on high alert if they are around Magneto who they don't trust to begin with, then she underestimated Mindblast, or whatever the fuck her name is, and got 1-hit KO'ed.

Does anyone know more about this character Sapphire Styx? What happens to the energy she steals? Does she just consume it? Or does it store someway similar to Rogue or something?

And I agree, I am so sick of Kitty. I've been sick of her since Bendis wrote her in his Uncanny.

I think her powers work similarly to Selene's. She consumes it after it wears out.

The cover for #4 shows Psylocke's fist with her psychic knife extended about to jam it into a very horrified looking Sapphire Styx. No surprise what's going to happen in this series.

Speaking of Styx, it's interesting to have her in the story as she has always been a citizen of Madripoor (unlike all the X-villains Bendis decided to have moving there just for fun).

But... she's not a member of the Femmes Fatales (in fact, even when the FFs joined Superia's Femizons, Styx wasn't a part of that mega-group either). Did she join the group? Did Viper hire her to collaborate with the FFs? Is she completely unrelated to Viper and just used the opportunity to get some free energy while both parties fought each other?

By the way, I'm curious if any of you guys are also following the other H4W miniseries and if they are any interesting.

@FSaker @Jefferson Santos My thoughts exactly. They are pushing Kitty so hard, and ruining the most powerful women in the X-Verse.
