#tbt: Uncanny X-Men #338

#tbt: Uncanny X-Men #338 – Psylocke suddenly melts out of a shadow, having used a new “shadow-porting” ability, which seems to be a side-effect of the Crimson Dawn, to go from Archangel’s apartment to the mansion. The other X-Men are quite startled at this new power manifestation, but Betsy has no time to explain. She is concerned because Warren is missing, at his place she just found a feather. Written by Scott Lobdell and Art by Joe MadureiraSalvador Larroca. Read full summary here.

As much as I liked the way Joe Madureira drew Psylocke, I still hate him because he he hated Betsy. Scott Lobdell too. She was either there to look stupid (UXM #328), to be used as a device to relay plot points (shown here), or completely forgotten. Steven Seagle was another jerk that hated Psylocke too, and was partially responsible for her being written off the x-books after losing her powers versus the Shadow King. The memory of these assholes destroying Betsy for years makes me gag. It also makes me more appreciative of talented people like Rick Remender, Matt Fraction, Simon Spurrier, and Brian Wood who basically dragged Psylocke out of the mud that Marvel dumped her in.

Scott Lobdell was the worst.

Bleh. This is my least favorite period of Psylocke's history. It's even dumber than the whole Kwannon mess.

Do you all remember her morbid fascination with Maggot during this time?

Far as it reached to Brazil, I only saw her using these teleport powers during Gambit's trial, against Maggot and very briefy in this issue mentioned here.
Against Kuragari and Psi-War are the few ones where this ability was a bit more explored. Once again, it was not well conducted.
A teleporting telepath ninja should have been even stealthier and harder to beat. I'd like to have seen her facing Sabes again after she got the Crimson Dawn's powers.

Yeah, the CD wasn't well thought out at all. Either Lobdell didn't have an endgame in mind (other than just to give her shadow porting) or he didn't get to tell it in time before he departed. Even though it seemed like Psylocke was free of her darkness after the CD mini, she was still acting cold and distant after it ended. (i.e. during Gambit's trial issues, editors notes notate the fact that the CD limited series had come and gone by then)

So.. either the Limited Series didn't line up correctly timeline-wise, or Lobdell intended for her personality to be permanently affected.

Either way, Psylocke has been free of the CD and all the crap it added onto her for a very long time now :)
