Sorry to be a bummer, but, man, look at that second page...Is that supposed to show us how different Betsy looks now as opposed to when she was in her original body? Does she look even remotely asian in that panel?

Overall, the art looks competent, but these kind of details are really important to help sell the story, I think it's really disappointing that there's no difference between Betsy and any of the women on those pages.

Also, the coloring is just so over-the-top, isn't it?

The story is really nice (Yost has proved again and again how much he loves the X-Universe, and how adept he is at writing it), and I LOVE the lead character, but I can't help feeling that is falls a bit short on the promise.

What a cruel end to Betsy's former body. First it was disfigured, then it was basically vaporized in front of her eyes. Gosh... It was like the British body was something to be hated with a passion. I like the coloring in the scans and the level of detail. Betsy never seemed to make peace with her former body. This has to have some lasting psychological damage to her. Thanks so much for the scans CMX and Luckystar!

James, I don't think this is a issue. See, Spiral mixed Kwannon and Betsy's DNA and genetic traits. In Acts of Vegeance, Wolverine recognize Lady Mandarin to be Psylocke becuase of her face. Betsy is not supposed to look completely "Asian". Her face now is somewhat similar to her original face.

James Figueiredo said...

@Dr. Doom:

I guess you could view it that way but, IMO, that would be a very generous extrapolation.

Personally, I view the fact that Wolverine recognized Lady Mandarin as Betsy more of a fluke than anything else. I believe that, since the Revanche story, way back in the 90's, it's been stabilished that what happened to Betsy and Kwannon was a mind switch - Betsy's mind in Kwannon's body, and vice-versa. Great effort has been made by many, many X-writers to drive home the point that Psylocke is a british woman in an asian body.

And even if we were to consider it a merging of bodies, instead of a switch, she should still look remarkably different that she originally did - She said it herself, to Jean Grey, after X-Tinction Agenda, how that she worried about Brian's reaction to the fact that all but her hair colour had changed.

Dr. Doom said...

Well, X-Tinction agenda happened before the Revanche retcon. After Revanche happened, it was established that Spiral mixed both bodies. It's a bit of a stretch, I know. But here you go, No-prize.

I think Jim Lee was the only one to draw Psylocke with Asian features.

thanks for these scans... i hope i can buy this mini soon or later here in Italy.

p.s.: i posted the right links to the scans of "gals on the run" in the other post. i hope it works this time.

Thanks for the scans, LuckyStar!!

Wow, it looks so good... the plot, the art, the references to her past, everything! Too bad it will take at least one year until it gets published in Brazil. But what matters is that Psylocke finally got the quality treatment and the respect (despite the disrespect her former body suffered, but we kinda needed that to keep the plot going) that she deserves!

Psychilde said...

Wow Yost has touched something that no other X-writer ever has!!! i dont think anyones referred so much to the original british betsy, EVEN when she had blonde hair!!! This mini is very promising : )

Selene said...

Regarding Betsy's lack of Asian resemblance in the pages,I think the only problem is the colour;her skin should be yellow-coloured.Her eyes do look slightly slanted and her nose and lips distinctively appear to be of Asian race.

Alexander said...

I was a bit upset with the art at first when it was just lines. Having the actual issue in hand the colors look fine. THe scene with the Hand reminds me of Ninja Scroll.

It was nice to see her blond in those scenes. My only problem was the variation between Kwannon's real body & Betsy's real body was minimal. I always pictured both women as completely different. Also, didn't the Asian body have purple or brown eyes? I only remember Jubilee being the only Asian with blue eyes.

If she didn't have those "eyelid creases" she'd look twice as asian I think.

it`s funny how identity crisis is some sort of trademark of Psylocke`s character.

-she had that just after acts of vengeance
-and kwannon showed up
-after crimson dawn (specially in the mini)
-after resurrection (remember that meditation on the blackbird)
-and now after dealing with her former body

Thanks for scanning!!! Wish you could scan more since I am not in US, it will really help me!!!

I would be really bad if Psylocke does not use her TK in the mini. She has a lot of potential but never used a 100%! I love the fact that she is having he TP back, but she also has grown as TK, becoming one of strongest in the kind of power. Now we barely see her using her TK katana which is a shame! C'mon, show her full potential!

Anonymous said...

She uses a Tk punch in one of the ninjas guts that messes him up pretty bad, that level of Tk i find acceptable, if she starts mountain smashing like a thug and flying i would be pissed!

No she doesnt look even remotely asian and all the womens faces look the same but the guy has great layouts and the colouring is bloody nice, its a freakin Psylocke mini im not complaining.

It was powerful seeing the body destroyed, Betsy seemed to lack a bit of her feistyness, Id rather not lose that side of her that Claremont so perfectly established. Im aware given the circumstances shes probably not in the mood.

Id love to see this series as the turning point for a brand new beginning for her as a prominent strong character and putting all this confusion to rest.

Buy it off ebay if u dont live in US.

Evander James said...

Hmm, Terry Dodson, in my opinion, has drawn Psylocke the best.

I always thought of her as completely asian.

But regardless, people ignore that all the time - so by now, i'm used to it.

Great issue, i hope i can get my hands on it soon

i think i just bought this fantastic comic on ebay...
lets see...

Let me ask something to anyone who read this issue: what happens to the cops who escorted Betsy's British body to the graveyard? Someone said that they are shown being killed by the Hand ninjas, is that true?

If it is, I guess Betsy should feel a little bit guilty for that...

Anonymous said...

Yeah. Some of them are killed by the Hand Ninjas.

I´m so ecited about all the betsy news!!!
this series looks amazing and apperently very well writen
I hope this all means we´ll be seeing her in the next Wolverine movie!
I mean, I read somewhere Logan will be having more than one female compagnion and that it will be the most sexy X-Movie ever...so....that all plus the Japan storyline and Betsy goodness must mean something!

centurion said...

@Anonymous 3:28 PM- Yes, I hope Betsy is in the next Wolverine movie, but the timeless question is who will portray her? Betsy may be difficult to cast given her grandeur as an X-Woman. Psylocke would be the best choice to include as a supporting female character in Wolverine Origins 2 that is set in Japan.

I have yet to receive my issue of Psylocke 1, but I was thinking that even if Marvel wanted to resurrect the British Body, they could find a way to make that happen. The technologies of DNA replication and cloning are heavily exploited in the Marvel Universe.

Yes, this is the best Marvel blog on the planet!

The great thing about Psylocke is that no matter how powerful her TK is, she will still fight up close and personal. She is as she stated waaay back an Action Junkie.

Anonymous said...

Psylocke shouldn't be smashing mountains with her TK. She should be using it in more cunning and insidious ways like stopping a foe's heart or giving them a stroke.

Anonymous said...

She would be the best compaqgnion for the next Wolvie Movie!
Would love to have Jubilee too but I thin that´s more difficult seeing she was actually a big cameo on the X-Movies
but Wolvie, Betsy, Gambit and Sunfire on a mission in Japan against Matsuo, the Hand, Silver Samurai and maybe Omega Red would ROCK!!!! Put in Mariko as the love intrest for Logan, a chemistry between Psylocke and Remy, Armor doing the funny sidecick jubille role and we have a pretty good movie. Of course she sould stick with her current powers including butterfly effect! Who could play her? huge question
This blog is awesome
can´t wait to hear some news on WATXM ! Hope betsy gets a bigger role and kick emma´s butt

centurion said...

@Anonymous 2:31 PM - I like your thinking! Betsy should definitely be included as a main character in a Wolverine Origins 2 movie. It should be set in the present time, not in the 1980s. Whoever plays Betsy should have a strong command of martial arts techniques, be able to act well, and of course, look like Betsy from the comics :)

cheers,
