Captain Kate, Captain Britain, Captain Krakoa..am I the only one who finds these Captain codenames stupid and cumbersome?
So Marvel is putting most of the X-line on hiatus to focus on Wolverine? That's a terrible idea. Oh well, at least the logo (with the title of one miniseries shown as a "reflection" of the other one) is nice.
Vita Ayala is still in New Mutants, so it seems the reboot some of us were expecting for the X-line in 2022 may not happen. Then again, Marauders does seem to be rebooted, and Kate's new team is actually interesting.
Assuming Excalibur is cancelled and Betsy loses the Captain Britain mantle, I was thinking that it could be cool to add her to the X-Force - not on the battlefield, but coordinating the team at a distance with her TP, like Jean was doing (this would be a good way to differentiate her even more from Kwannon, and Betsy doesn't need to have physical battles to be a badass). As for her uniform, maybe bring back the Outback mask and cloak (then again, the mask and cloak could feel unnecessary if she's monitoring the X-Force from Krakoa... it would still look cool, though).
Alternatively, in case she continues to be Captain Britain in Excalibur, hopefully the book will continue to portray her the way she's been shown in the current arc, rather than dragging her back to the disrespectful way she was shown until issue #20 or so.
Also why do they keep putting Leinil Yu on XMen covers? He's not bad but I never felt his style matched the XMen. Hes better suited IMO for something like Daredevil or Black Panther
We're finally seeing Ben Percy's "Big Idea". Most of the sub creators on Hickman's team got their shot to create a big pitch event. All that is left is Vita.
Tini Howard - X of Swords
Gerry Duggan - Hellfire Gala
Leah Williams - Trial of Magneto
I think this LADOW mini was supposed to be a Moira X series, but since Hickman is basically gone (from major X work), Percy took it in another direction he is familiar with...Logan!
We're right back where we started with the X-Books from before Hickman took over. Just all random books in random directions.
I’m pretty sure I am done after Inferno ends. The Hickman arcs of HoX/PoX brought something exciting, new, and adult-feeling, but I lack faith that will continue in his absence. Superhero comics are all so wash, rinse, repeat. I think I have finally outgrown them for good.
I've put much thought and choose Betsy to take a break until she finds her footing. The Captain Britain phase was the worst era she had to date. The mixing of Captain Britain powers and Betsy's mutant nature are contradicting. Also the forced removal of Betsy's butterfly and tk weaponry kills the character and takes away what is unique to her besides her purple hair.
@THE FLYING NEGRO I deduced the same conclusion. Benjamin Percy is mostly familiar with Logan therefore Sage and Colossus who were about to take the spotlight never will.
@randybear my complaint is that Betsy wouldn't touch the name Captain with a twenty feet pole. Betsy accept the mantle that caused her harm and pain in the past is crazy to think of.
"I've put much thought and choose Betsy to take a break until she finds her footing"
The problem with this idea is that the X-writers may just decide to leave her on a break for so long that, by the time she returns, no one remembers or cares enough about her anymore.
I mean, we saw that happen to Dazzler: she was once one of the major Marvel superheroines; then, Claremont had the Outback X-Men go through the Siege Perilous, Dazzler went missing for several years... and by the time she finally reappeared, her popularity had already vanished and she went from a major character in the Marvel universe to a footnote in the X-Men. Since then, many writers have tried to make her relevant again: Fraction, Bendis... and all of them failed.
Betsy could have a similar fate. Especially now, with another mutant being named Psylocke, with her iconic uniform and with the same powers she has (or had); most readers would probably either assume this is the same Psylocke that was around for decades or just forget that Betsy's time as Psylocke was a big deal, and that's it.
@FSaker the status quo in which Betsy stays in the place of her brother then her decline of Psylocke popularity is certain.
Female characters who replaced unknown male heroes and had a significant history under their own forged identities have problems as substitutes. Carol Danvers holds the record for cancellations and relaunches followed by Laura Wolverine and Jane Foster as Thor.
Betsy was the ultimate Psylocke while as Captain Britain she is struggling to keep her relevanche with the X-Men and her mutant and spy natures. It is a matter far beyond of a capable writer which Tini Howard was lacking it is an unusual refusal to let the bathing suit die and let Betsy carry on with her Psylocke legacy.
@Jaime Braz, I agree. Still, taking Betsy away from comics wouldn't help her regain her relevance, either (again, it backfired horribly for Dazzler; Jubilee was also absent for quite some time due to M-Day and her return became a mess, taking years and several attempts to fix her).
There are three solutions I see for her situation: make her Captain Britain identity work (something that Tini failed to do so far, although she does seem to be improving a little), return her identity as Psylocke (which would be the ideal solution but is very unlikely, since it's more interesting for Marvel to keep the name on the psychic ninja), or give her a new identity and base it around her time with the X-Men before the body swap (when she had few physical battles and would mostly use her powers from a safe distance to send information to her teammates or invade the enemies' minds) to set her completely apart from the current Psylocke.
Whatever solution Marvel chooses, however, I think having Betsy take a break from the X-books is a huge risk to her.
@FSaker I agree it's risky to shelf Betsy. On the other hand Captain Britain and Tini Howard have damaged Betsy's brand and reputation so much that she is boring without her 1980's and 1990's innocent maiden with a look to kill image. Things fall through and Captain Britain fails Betsy or the Psylocke doesn't return to her a new identity has to be made in order for Betsy to stay alive in the X-Men game.
@Jaime Braz, that's a good idea. Personally, if Howard fails to establish Betsy as an interesting Captain Britain and Betsy somehow loses the mantle, I'd like to see her take back the Disassembled uniform - maybe adding the Outback mask and cloak to it, to make her look more mysterious.
As long as she looks cool and gets proper development, I wouldn't even mind if she took the Revanche identity from Kwannon (it would be fair, since Kwannon took the Psylocke identity from her).
