Excalibur #18 Spoilers

Spoilers: Saturnyne receives a message from the Quiet Council asking for her help to mitigate Otherworld deaths. As Earth-616’s Captain Britain is missing, Saturnyne refuses their request because it is Betsy who is supposed to be the point of contact between Krakoa and Otherworld.

Near the Braddock Lighthouse, Betsy stands on the shore watching the sea. Rachel assures Rogue that she is indeed Betsy. Rachel thinks she’s just depressed; however, Rogue is suspicious. Betsy displays the butterfly aura before them and asks the girls to leave her alone. Rachel has Rogue absorb her telepathic powers to look after Betsy when she’s gone.

Emma Frost interrupts the duo and demands to know why they have been hiding Betsy from the Council. Emma wants to take Betsy to Krakoa immediately, but she refuses and goes back to the Lighthouse. Emma warns Excalibur she wants to see Betsy before the Council within a few days as she’s the only point of contact between Saturnyne and Krakoa; otherwise, they’ll close the gateway to Otherworld for good.

While Excalibur has dinner together, Betsy keeps her distance from them. Maggie crosses the gateway to the Lighthouse and catches a glimpse of her aunt; Betsy flees. Maggie warns Brian in Avalon and Excalibur explains they didn’t tell him anything because they’re not really sure if Betsy is indeed herself. Later, Rogue shares her suspicions over Betsy with Brian and he agrees that something is really off. Brian decides to stay the night at the lighthouse just in case.

Later that night, Betsy telepathically manipulates Brian into going back to Avalon. At this point, it’s clear “Betsy” is an unidentified evil entity possessing her body. She later plants a suggestion in Rogue’s mind and heads back to Krakoa through the gateway. The next morning, Rogue deduces “Betsy” wants her to follow her back to Krakoa; Rictor volunteers to join Rogue. Gambit decides to check Avalon and look for Brian.

Gambit comes across Jamie Braddock who tells him Brian is safe and sound. Jamie also reveals that he had a Betsy clone commissioned. Jamie takes Gambit to Apacalypse’s former lab beneath the Castle. Remy is upset that Jamie is keeping Morgan le Fay imprisoned. Jamie dismisses his concerns and leads him to a coffin where he is keeping an empty body for Betsy. As Jamie opens the coffin, they realize that the empty body is missing.

Rogue and Rictor check on Apocalypse’s Grove looking for spells. Rictor suggests that if Betsy is not herself as they suspect, they’ll need magic to help her come back. As Rictor uses his powers to open a secret wall hidden in the rocks, “Betsy” is preying on them from the shadows. Rogue senses she’s watching them with her borrowed telepathy, and “Betsy” strikes weilding a psy-knife and daggers, knocking Rictor out. Rogue asks who she is to what “Betsy” replies “one of your oldest friends”. Suddenly, Kwannon intervenes to help Rogue and watch her back. Kwannon explains that their psychic voices were too loud and that “Betsy” indeed is not the real Betsy Braddock.

So it sounds like "Betsy" is basically being the badass we've wanted Betsy to be. LOL.

Pretty much! The issue started great and I was thrilled to see the butterfly but its NOT betsy... i know she will eventually return but I dont understand why the imposter is using all her imagery now.
I'm so sick of Marvel toying with the Betsy fans! This series needs to pick up the pace and pay off already im tired of people saying we need to be patient its been over a year of Excalibur and we are still waiting for the real Betsy on panel not this weak angry and now imposter UGH!!

So... malice?

We have no idea what's going on or who is in her body. She appeared evil but was using the butterfly signature and even a psyknife. Towards the end of the issue was transformed into CB.

Rogue and the others can't figure out who's in the body and Kwannon appeared at the end to save the day GROAN

It was obvious from the preview alone that this wasn't the real Betsy. The question is: WHERE is Carmen Sand... I mean, WHERE is the real Betsy?

At this point, I just want her to come back. If Kwannon has to save the day for that to happen, so be it (though I guess it's possible the real Betsy will also appear somehow and join forces with Kwannon, so that both women save the day together).

I wonder if its Kwannon from previous issue somehow was sent to 616 instead of Betsy. Sorta like a reverse where Kwannon has taken Betsy's body. Im curious to see where this is going and the pay off here. Like why the prolonging of returning Betsy and acting as she should? What is Tini trying to accomplish im confused? I mean this has to result in some sort of.. yet another change for Betsy right? I just don't get why it's being dragged out the whole 'oh betsy isn't herself!' That's been going on since issue #1

Tini is so nice I dont dislike her personally at all or am even mad at her I just feel like they need to tighten her plots. There are so many characters in Excalibur they appear every 2-3 issues to update us on them (i.e. Pete Wisdom, brian/megan/Maggie, Jamie, Saturyne and now Morgan)

I think there's too many plots going on and they're all racing at a snails pace. Plus the one issue a month (outside of Swords) is not helping. covid delayed the series for a few months they really need to pick up the pace and do some double shipping.

Two points not related to Betsy: about this agreement Krakoa is trying to reach with Saturnyne, does it mean Gorgon and Rockslide may be resurrected after this arc (and, if so, what happens to the Rockslide that came to be when the Five tried to resurrect the original one)?

And, now that Gambit knows about Morgan being Jamie's prisoner, will Excalibur do anything about it? Sure, Morgan was awful to them, but I'd like to believe they wouldn't agree with Jamie vivisecting her...

@Randybear I'm not sure, that Kwannon didnt seem crazed like this, just irritating like the real one lol.

Plus she took over Betsy's body as Revanche already lol.

We want outback's Betsy back... I absolutely agree with you, Psi-Girl. But now Betsy should be more cold, powerful and lethal, since she was years in a ninja body

I meant strictly from this POV as before it was Betsy who arrived back in the Asian body transformed now we have Betsys body reappear as someone else is the parallel im reaching for lol

Outback Betsy yes! Ninja Betsy yes! Game of Thrones Betsy ... Not so much!

I dont understand why both women can't have the same power set/abilities etc why do they need to differentiate Betsy SO much from Kwannon? Is it anymore confusing than say... have a multitude of red headed psychics on Krakoa or the 5 Wolverines etc

FSaker said...

True. Jean and Rachel (and Hope, who's not a telepath but is also a redhead connected to the Phoenix Force); Wolverine, Daken and X-23; Emma and the Cuckoos; Jubilee and Boom-Boom... the list goes on.

(there's also Northstar and Aurora, but to be fair, I think they look cooler exactly when they ARE together)

Probably because unlike the others these two have huge identity issues lol.

Kwannon started out thinking she was Betsy as Revanche, then she came back as "nothing" and now has decided she is Psylocke wearing the same outfit Betsy did for years in her body. I'd say she has some unresolved issues, which is fascinating how the writers are skipping over Kwannon's imo unreasonable issues and actually having Betsy act in a way that validates them.

Betsy of course is imo the real Psylocke and now feels lost because that identity was ripped from her (just like for years things have been ripped away from her to satisfy others needs, like Kwannon's lover violating Betsy to revive Kwannon). Now she has an identity more associated with her brother than with her, and Kwannon has one more associated with Betsy than her.

I don't mind similar powersets, but in reality Kwannon is not even close to the psychic Betsy is (and pretty much says that in Fallen Angels) and seemingly has a "measure" of Betsy's gifts now (as again vagually stated in Fallen Angels). I rather similar powersets but distinctively different.

I wish one waa an enpathic/TK Asian ninja & a the other a Telepathic/Precog caucasian ninja. Different enough, but still similar lol.

Betsy really doesn't need to be Captain Britain, because unlike Brian, she already has abilities without it.

Jmo.

I want Tini to leave the series.
Sorry for you Tini fans. But her style much more suits the indie books she writes.
I wrote a 2 part story for Youtube, about a Demonic monster, a Camper, my Protagonist, and the FLIPPIN Fairy court out the FEY!
It's a 45 minute read, and people got it, understood it, without even having to read anything, or hear other stories about Abigail.
Why is Tini taking so long to get to the point?

@Tazirai yes Tini Howard does a bad job for Excalibur another writer can do better. It's a shame popular X-Men like Psylocke, Rogue, Gambit and Jubilee are written like clowns.
