Oh! Kwannon is so cute I wanna crush her head and throw her in a ditch.

Rahsaan said...

Damn, @Kiki! LOL! Would you feel differently if she at least dyed her hair back to black and stopped biting off Elizabeth? LOL.

Renegade X said...

Dye her hair back black, put the crimson dawn mark on, change her signature color from purple to something else....funny that if Betsy pass down her beloved Shirayuki to her. Still vouching for Kwannon wearing the House of M or Mag's Uncanny X-Men look.

Rahsaan the Kwannon gives me Single White Female chills. It doesn't help that I experienced the same in real life with a girl I thought to be a friend. It was less like the movie and with much more hair pulling and bruises. I see myself in Betsy handing over so much to please the other side and take copycat shivs instead.

Renegade X the crimson mark sorts things out and the butterfly be safe in Betsy's mind. Likewise Betsy's purple hair that is becoming alarmingly Pixiesque. Are they giving Betsy Pixie's cotton candy pink to yield purple to Kwannon? What's the point of Kwannon existing if she isn't shown and drawn Japanese?

@Renegade, those looks would look good on her (At least, the clothing and black hair. Personally, I am not a fan of Crimson Dawn anything), but I really need for her to choose clothing and tattoos that Bets never wore. I think that would be better for the character to be her own person.

I think it's too late. I think they let Kwannon simmer during Dissembled to see the fan reactions and I think way too many people bitched about losing ninja Psylocke that they decided to give her back the way she was as much as possible (without it actually being Betsy of course) which is what happened. 90's Psylocke is still around exactly as she was except it's just not Betsy anymore.

What's ironic to me is the people defending her claiming Betsy's attributes. Like it's fine that Marvel is now having a PoC emulate a white person lmao

But at the end of the day Asian Psylocke has never been about anything but aesthetic and being badass. No characterization required as long as long as her ass hangs out while cutting someones head off yakuza style!!

I suppose the artists and writers would also like to give Kwannon something unique, but Asian Psylocke has become a brand Marvel is afraid to change. The character has appeared in too many game titles and other media. At the same time they could not let British Betsy keep an Asian body, because this would sooner or later lead to a shitstorm. Race is a sensitive issue. In the end, it's business logic versus creativity and it's kind of ironic that after being back in her own body, Kwannon still won't be allowed to be herself.

Is there a reason people cry for Kwannon? She is a female Bruce Lee who perhaps is mutant. The one sure fact is she is an accident a miscommunication of writers that went from Asian plastic surgery on the face of Betsy Braddock the original Psylocke to a newbie swapping bodies. Stinky tofu however you look at it.

I have never cared about Kwannon as she has never been given any characteriation. When she was resurrected in her own body, I thought that would finally change. Unfortunately, she has remained a shell to date. I think it would be in the character's best interest to return to the afterlife as doing everything Psylocke did and being a carbon copy of the time Psylocke was shoehorned into being an Asian woman is super problematic and super basic as were many of the tropes that were thrust on Psylocke. I'm all for inclusion and would so prefer to see some Asian women X-Men I actually am invested in be featured in starring roles in the new relaunch, such as Xian, Sooraya, Surge, Karima (who I'm happy to say in HoX/PoX), Sway... And a slew of Asian men characters. I'm all for even creating new, diverse ones whose whole existence isn't tethered to other characters. Kwannon though is just really played out to me. She has never been made to be anything more than a hack writing device.

This Fallen Angels title might actually be the vehicle to finally give Kwannon agency, but it already is problematic from jump in its marketing with the woman now using Betsy's prior wardrobe choice, psychic knife, and using her old codename.

Basically, I'm at the point of feeling that Kwannon is a lost cause and needs to just be written out of the books.

I'd tip my hat to you Rahsaan but that's not ladylike so I raise a glass to the best comments I've read about the dead end this misogynistic and ninja cliche is at.

Like many others pointed out Kwannon is a plot device that became a character. I doubt Bryan Edward Hill will manage or is willing to get her out of the Psylocke clone zone. By reading his Batman and the Outsiders Katana and Orphan are the Asian diversity chicks slashing throats in kabuki style. At least they are original characters unlike Kwannon who needs Betsy's accessories to remain alive. Anyways we're talking ninja toy molds and sexy posters worth of horny secretions on basement rugs.

Karma, Surge, Jubilee, Sway, Nature Girl, Armor and Sprite need more love and opportunities to show what they're made of. Joss Whedon wrote a really Astonishing X-Men run and Armor was the best new X-Man to come out of it. I need more of that Armor. I expect Jubilee to be astonishing in the Excalibur series and help her sister Betsy like she always does.

It's Moira's world. We're all just living in it. ;)

@Rahsaan. ITA with this. I could take her, but she needs her own wardrobe, own empathic powers, and a hair color that is a personal choice that Betsy never preferred.

Lex said...

@X-Man,

Agreed wholeheartedly. I get she's a plot device that came from a mistake of a writer not reading, or maybe not caring for the previous writers work but she needs her own look. What Marvel seems to be forgetting is that the legacy characters who have worked (Kamala, Miles, Riri) may have the code-names of other heroes but they've got their own imagery & schemes to try & set them apart while still being affiliated with the original.

Kamalas a shape changer, Miles has an ability that both Ultimate & 616 Peter don't, Riri had her own specialities to her armor abilities that Tony didn't.

I'm all for Marvel wanting to make Kwannon into an actual character instead of being a prop. They've had worse characters come & go in & out of the X-books for longer than her original run. They want her to use the Psylocke codename, ok.

However they need to retire the color scheme & powers to Betsy. Also why put her in a costume that eventually caused controversy over the years other than hoping to have people think it's Betsy, beyond sales.

This whole thing actually makes me want to sketch up some uniform & color scheme ideas.

X-Man said...

@Lex thanks. I also saw someone post a thread on FB about the time Betsy and Jean switched powers and Jean gained Betsy's telepathic abilities adding them to her own. Jean manifested a Phoenix Raptor as the "ultimate expression of her telepathic abilities" like Betsy's psychic knife and displayed a Phoenix symbol on her face at times that was similar to how Betsy had the crimson dawn mark. So it is possible to get the unique attributes of Betsy's telepathy and still make it your own. Jean proved that. If Kwannon must have telepathy, she should have gotten the same treatment and gotten something other than the butterfly imho.

Yeah if they want to keep Kwannon a ninja yakuza stereotype then make her psychic signature be a dragon or something lol
