I think that last image may be the secret Leah Williams project.

Bummer they don't revisit the Ultimate version of Tian. New Tian of Secret Empire and Emma involved was a letdown. Emma is better with Hellfire Club. About time the Asian mutants had a Utopia place of their own. Kwannon can lead the Raksha group under Shen Xorn and Kuan Yin Xorn to differentiate herself completely from Psylocke and stop using her colors or style. Also go back to her Yakuza sensei Nyoirin who is a cool reference to the intertwined Buddhist deities of Chinese Guanyin and Nyoirin Kanzeon. That way our girl Betsy will be safe in her own body from now on. If Kwannon's body is inhabited by her and not somebody else.

FSaker said...

Uh... so is Mystique the new White King? It's nice to see her and Emma pairing up, but I think Mystique makes more sense as the leader of the Brotherhood of Mutants... the politics games of the Hellfire Club don't seem to suit her.

And damn, more X-Men will die? Wasn't killing off Blindfold and Loa enough?

And Strong Guy. Again.

I have zero interest in the horrible X-Men torture porn they are selling.

Rahsaan said...

@Benjamim, my wish is that one day Random takes out Strong Guy for good.

Rahsaan said...

And then Random takes himself out.

Rahsaan said...

@Jaime, great idea. 💜

@Fsaker Sure thing Emma and Mystique will enter a catfight when their plans take effect. Mystique is the worst of the two and loves her Brotherhood toys. Εmma deep down has good intentions but she wants to have cake and eat it too.

@Benjamin Hutton I wouldn't worry about deaths in Marvel Universe it's like another mutant Monday. Before you know it bamf and gone. Nate Grey created a pocket universe to suck the X-Men that effects mainstream reality and when the two collide things will be normal again. The reality Cyclops and Wolverine are into is also broken by Age of X-Man. It's like Days of Future Past in 616 meets Age of Apocalypse in Age of X.

Jaime Braz said...

@Rahsaan Chisolm It's the best way to use Kwannon somewhere without looking as a Yellowface Psylocke. She can't be with the X-Men and look at Betsy who wore her like clothes for 28 years. It's awkward and wrong for both. Kwannon can't forgive Matsu'o who is dead for making her into a guinea pig nor Betsy for killing her lover. Being back home with her master Nyoirin in Yakuza feels right. If she is behind her body's wheel. Focus more on her empathic powers not steal anymore from Psylocke. She can be a living mood stone manipulating feelings and unlock her skills in color spectrum like Halo.

Benjamin Hutton said...

I really hope that all of the main universe stuff gets undone.

As it stands we've seen just how incredibly, disgustingly horrible the everyday populace of the Marvel Universe is. Turns out Magneto really was completely right.

And don't even get me started on the fascist, hate-monger protecting 'Avengers'. When you have Captain America and Black Widow protecting mutant murdering, hate spewing, humans over mutants - AND then telling mutants to their face that this is justified...

Yeah, something has gone horrible wrong.

Jaime Braz said...

@Benjamin Hutton Secret Wars II and Civil War II left a bitter taste on the Marvel line. Kobik started Secret Empire destroying what little integrity left for Avengers and Steve. Kobik was a rehash of Kubik from the first Secret Wars mixed with modern political things. New writers are milking successful old stories with an angsty twist which doesn't cut it.

The X-Men downfall goes back to the Morrison dismantling days when he did it with style for Marvel to spite Fox. As the war for mutant rights escalated Marvel vomited more and more bile on the X-Men with House of M, Decimation, Messiah trilogy, Phoenix Five and AVSX, OG5 and Battle of the Atom, Inhumans vs X-Men and Death of X. The strategy worked in Marvel's favor at a great cost for mutants. People grew tired with Marvel dissing the X-Men stuff and turned their backs on them.

Hulk ripping off Juggernaut's origin, Hank Pym remaining a villain, Thor being still unworthy-ish, Tony as the son of an agent singer, deaths and resurrections, lots of Spider-Man and Wolverine clones running around makes a mess of Marvel. Too silly to follow.

FSaker said...

"And don't even get me started on the fascist, hate-monger protecting 'Avengers'. When you have Captain America and Black Widow protecting mutant murdering, hate spewing, humans over mutants - AND then telling mutants to their face that this is justified..."

And they're supposed to be the HEROES...

The sad thing, though, is that the way people in Marvel's universe are reacting to mutants isn't far off from how people in our real world react towards minorities. After some years with an apparent improvement in terms of respect and acceptance towards minorities, I feel my country has regressed in this subject A LOT nowadays. I don't know how things are in other countries, but from some news I read, it seems this is also happening in other parts of the world.

@Jaime, I was just thinking the other day if Kwannon would approve of all the people Betsy had sex with in her body:

Warren
Neal
Creed
Hercules
Cluster
Matsu'o (She already knows about him)

LOL.

@Benjamin, @Jaime, @FSaker, after Age of X-Man ends, I really want to see Magneto's ndew Brotherhood do something way drastic to address the Avengers. It would be out character for them not to. And I really want to see some of the X-Men support him in it even if it means them being at odds with teammates.

Jaime Braz said...

@Rahsaan Chisolm I think Kwannon is a picky one and drawn to Oriental people with martial background, especially those of power like her sensei or Matsu'o. Bet she will be extra pissed at Psylocke for using her body like a ''fleshlight''. Psylocke slept with Fantomex meaning with EVA too. Another reason for them to start a deathmatch.

Rahsaan said...

lmfao!!!!😂

FSaker said...

To be fair, Kwannon was a major jerk when she met Betsy for the first time (and back then she hadn't slept with these people), AND she gave Betsy's body that horrible hairstyle, so I'd say she deserves everything Psylocke did to her body.

Not that she'll even have the time to worry about that; assuming she's the one controlling the Asian body (even though it'd make no sense at all; I still believe it's either part of Betsy's mind or the body developed a mind of its own), I guess she'll take a shotgun blast from Hope to the face or something. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if she turns out to be the X-Man that will be buried in issue #17...

Jaime Braz said...

@FSaker Without a doubt Kwannon is - if she is alive in that body - a total jerk, because she involved herself with Matsu'o and crossed her sensei Nyoirin with whom she had more than a master-apprentice relationship. I'm siding with Betsy and always will for she is the only tragic victim in this Hand-Yakuza love triangle after washing up amnesiac from Siege Perilous.

Kwannon was mercy killed by Matsu'o inside Betsy's body when she contracted the Legacy Virus and was buried in Japan. The little time Kwannon stayed with the X-Men as Revanche she hardly was a member so I wouldn't call her an X-Man.

When the X-girls went searching for Logan in Madripoor, Sapphire Styx sucked Betsy's spirit out of Kwannon's body to sustain herself. Betsy fell into Styx's purgatory insides to find other victim souls trapped with Patch-Logan. Betsy requested the lost souls to help her get free. Betsy absorbed their power and went Halloween Supernova on Sapphire Styx exploding her from the inside out. With the residual soul power Betsy recreated her original body. Where did Sapphire Styx's soul go when her body exploded? 1+1=2

Rahsaan said...

If Sapphire Styx is inside Kwannon’ s body, then Marvell will have proven one again that they say Kwannon as nothing more than a plot device for white characters. 😂

It would make more sense though than it being Kwannon back from the afterlife as how would her sould just come to arrive back?

Rahsaan said...

Also, does Styx know Japanese?

Betsy does not, so we know it is not any part of her.

Kiki M. Ishola said...

Yaaass queen Sapphire Styx baby! Bag the biatch Kwannon and bring the vampire chick chick to the Hellfire of femmes fatales! Emma's armchair has an arm free to place her Styx bootay!

Jaime Braz said...

@Rahsaan Chisolm Good news Sapphire Styx is Asian and dyes her hair red. It won't be cultural appropriation. Kwannon's body has to be ready for red hair now.😊

It makes more sense because Kwannon's corpse was empty within the radius of Sapphire's psionic explosion. I doubt Kwannon rose from the dead after two decades and since Jamie tampered that body with reality magic it can't host the dead. Therefore Sapphire Styx makes the perfect explanation.

Sapphire Styx is Madripoor native and she discussed with Tyger Tiger who is Singaporean don't know about her Japanese. She worked for the Roche gang and had epicanthic fold in her first appearance.

Jaime Braz said...

@Kiki Mink Sapphire Styx isn't a real vampire per se. She lives on draining the spirit force out of people not their blood. We don't know who she is or how old exactly. If it's really her in Kwannon's body then Betsy must run for her life. Betsy nuked Styx's beauty after all. True, she fits in the Femme Fatales club because she was one before! LOL.

Kiki M. Ishola said...

Let's be honest Kwannon was a prop from the get go. She was brain dead and now she is dead dead. Where she belongs. Sapphire Styx does her a huge favor to live in her shack. Need I mention her awesome vampire powers? Sorry not sorry.

Jaime Braz said...

@Kiki Mink Ooooookay... There is a slight chance to be either of them or maybe both of them. The fact is that the Asian body is walking and using a psychic knife. I'm leaning toward Sapphire Styx but Marvel has the last word. Sapphire Styx is more fierce.

Kiki M. Ishola said...

Say what!? Both in the body?! That's dumber than dumb! WTF are they having lez out sessions in some kinda kama tantric mantra too? Sapphire Styx 4TW.

Jaime Braz said...

@Kiki Mink Hold on a second I didn't mean it like that, don't put words in my mouth. All I'm saying is the possibilities are split 50-50. Either Sapphire Styx or Kwannon is in that body. Also you don't have to be disrespectful to homosexual women and traditional ways of love making.

Oh I see you are the apologetic type. Ha ha I'm not disrespectful to anyone only your one-body-two-chicks approach has me rofling hard! Isn't you who said earlier Betsy's brother James done magic hijinks to the Asian dead body?! Again Sapphire Styx 4TW.

@Kiki Mink I don't have to apologize for something which came from somebody else. There is a difference between keeping the conversation quality and leveling everything with floor level or shall I say Mole Man's Subterranean level. And I get it Sapphire Styx 4tw!

@Rahsaan Chisolm I'm sorry some people are extremely all over the place.

Benjamin Hutton said...

"To be fair, Kwannon was a major jerk when she met Betsy for the first time (and back then she hadn't slept with these people), AND she gave Betsy's body that horrible hairstyle, so I'd say she deserves everything Psylocke did to her body."

Are you referring the perm-curls they gave her in that one issue (mistakenly) after Kwannon showed up at the X-Mansion?

Actually, Brandon Peterson was probably trying to be a diligent artist there. Before going through the Siege Betsy had her hair permed (at the mall where the X-gals picked up Jubilee). But in the last few issues before going through the Siege - and then when she was discovered by Matsuo on the shore of the Hand's island, her hair seemed back to normal.

Which is a convoluted way of saying... You can't blame Kwannon for the perm.

And not to get all serious, but I think it's important to note that Matsuo raped Betsy.

She was mind-controlled and he was having sex with her.

That's rape.

Rahsaan said...

Agreed. Matsu’o was a rapist. I should have made that distinction.

I also like curly haired Elizabeth.

Jaime Braz said...

@Benjamin Hutton Matsu'o and Kwannon deserve each other as birds of a feather. Both are scumbags. Kwannon learned about Matsu'o torturing Psylocke with the help of Spiral and then raping her time and again but showed no remorse or care for Betsy's nightmare. They shared a psychic rapport being in exchanged bodies so she knew with details about the horrors Betsy experienced by Matsu'o, Spiral and the Hand organization. Yet she chose Matsu'o the rapist mobster even after she realized she wasn't real Betsy and worse she was an empath. Kwannon doesn't deserve a place with the X-Men. She not only will hold a grudge against Betsy for killing her lover but for Wolverine who held the annual maiming ritual in memory of Mariko Yashida's assassination.

Jaime Braz said...

@Rahsaan Chisolm Ditto! Betsy with curly, puffy, wavy hair is the best. Her Revanche suit and appearance in the 90s was great.

Benjamin Hutton said...

I mean, I don't agree with any of that, but just to be clear it was specifically stated that though Psylocke and Revanche moved in unison, and had a subliminal rapport, they couldn't read each other's minds.

However, Revanche DID read Matsuo's mind, and subsequently confronted him for how shitty his actions were.

This confrontation was somewhat abbreviated, given she was right on the cusp on dying, and she was basically guilting Matsuo into mercy killing her.

It's hard to argue the morality of two assassins - individuals who literally murdered as a profession - But Kwannon especially was shown to have a very well realised code of ethics and honor - whether or not it's one you agree with is completely up to you. Were she to be written in character there's no way Kwannon would hold a grudge against Psylocke for killing Matsuo - another mercy killing - or Wolverine for his torture of the same.

It's a shame Matsuo is dead, because they could have gotten a lot of mileage out of a reunion between those two (not that it would be that hard to resurrect him, as he was a member of The Hand - but I'm not sure how well their resurrection techniques work on someone who was as mutilated as Matsuo, and they'd also have to find the body somewhere in the ocean, or the stomach of a shark. ;))

Benjamin Hutton said...

Actually, I guess if we're going to be really fair, we don't see Matsuo have sex with Betsy on panel, and it isn't stated - but I would say it is heavily implied.

He's hanging out with her while she's bathing naked, and then when Revanche is probing his mind the dialogue certainly seems to imply that they had a physical relationship.

BUT it's technically possible they just kissed/whatever, and didn't actually cross the line into sex.

Matsuo is still a creep regardless.

@Benjamin Hutton The whole Nyoirin-Kwannon-Matsu'o love triangle started because of Kwannon betraying her Yakuza clan and falling in love with Hand Matsu'o. Nyoirin was a nobler man who accepted the Body Shoppe swap because he couldn't live without his apprentice. The writers didn't handle Nyoirin well and his relationship with Kwannon in Betsy's body. She was definitely a prop for Betsy to make her dream of being a warrior come true and it was a Yellowface disaster.

Claremont had an unhealthy obsession with racebending white characters into other races like the policeman and nurse into Native Americans by Demon Bear in New Mutants, Betsy into a Japanese ninja, the Fantastic Four swapping bodies with a Black family and the infamous body swap between Storm and Emma Frost.

Psylocke was already a charter pilot, a renowned British model and S.T.R.I.K.E. agent. Elizabeth could have become a warrior without being mindraped, raped and suffered. I think Claremont was titillated by a frail British nobility being abused to death whether it was Jamie, Slaymaster, Mojo, Spiral or the Hand.

Betsy could sign up for MI-13 or Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D instead of going through a painful sentence for 28 years inside an Japanese meat prison. She almost lost her sanity and became a bloodthirsty killer because of that. Let alone having a twin blonde brother who couldn't recognize his sister that was warped and wanted to kill him. Betsy became suicidal and reckless due to the body swap, jumping in front of Warren off a skyscraper, flirting with Saara while in a relationship, succumbing to Crimson Dawn. I pray she can put all that behind and move on with her eyes, body and mind intact.

"@Benjamin Hutton The whole Nyoirin-Kwannon-Matsu'o love triangle started because of Kwannon betraying her Yakuza clan and falling in love with Hand Matsu'o. Nyoirin was a nobler man who accepted the Body Shoppe swap because he couldn't live without his apprentice."

I don't agree with any of your opinions, but you're more than entitled to them. Arguing with someone about their opinions is more than pointless.

Facts however...

Kwannon didn't betray anybody by falling in love with Matsuo. Nowhere does it say that their love was forbidden, or against any rules. Rather, they were both concerned that their respective masters - Nyoirin and The Hand - had conflicting agendas which would ultimately bring them into conflict.

Knowing this was imminent Kwannon made Matsuo promise that they would both hold to their honour, and fight to the death if need be. Whereas Matsuo suggested they commit suicide together, as a means of avoiding this fate.

Ultimately Matsuo promises Kwannon he will uphold his loyalty to The Hand, and the two fight - with Kwannon eventually falling to her almost death.

So you see, no-one was betrayed - just the opposite in fact. Kwannon and Matsuo's refusal to betray their respective employers is what ultimately causes their downfall - and leads to the body swap and subsequent mess.

Benjamin Hutton said...

Also "Nyoirin was a nobler man"?

The narrative is somewhat confusing, as it at first seems like Revanche is fully aware she isn't the real Betsy Braddock, and then later it's implied that she genuinely thought she was...

But Nyoirin - a master who is in love with his assassin, with no indication that love is reciprocated - keeps an amnesiac Kwannon in his home for months, feeds her lies to manipulate her, and then sends her off to kill Psylocke and the X-Men, ostensibly for 'revenge' against acts wholly of his own making.

I quote: "He (Nyoirin) chose to use that opportunity to reteach her, to make her truly his own at last, as she had never been in her previous life."

This is the same man that is aware of the love between Kwannon and Matsuo, yet lets them fight to the death anyway - while he watches! I don't think it's a stretch to assume part of his rationale for this is that if Kwannon kills Matsuo, then Nyoirin might have a better shot with her.

Yes, he does let Matsuo take her body to The Hand - but he could have stopped all these events from unfolding in the first place.

And then when confronted with Psylocke and Revanche, he again sends them after Matsuo.

I mean Matsuo is a creep - but Nyoirin is a creep also.

Jaime Braz said...

@Benjamin Hutton your quotations and observations are nice. Nyoirin was a formidable Yakuza clan member, lesser than the Yashida clan descendants to imperial samurai and the Cybersamurai, nonetheless lethal and influential. He raised Kwannon and to him she was an invaluable investment of his lifetime. Blind faith which she, like it or not, betrayed by having an affair with the head of a Hand finger. Yakuza and the Hand divisions are forever enemies and align in adverse situations. Therefore he pitted her in honor duel with Matsu'o to prove herself worthy of his trust. Japanese culture leaves no room for feelings and magnanimity it's kill or be killed in its underworld when you cross traditional oaths. When Nyorin acquired Kwannon in Betsy's body he wanted to repeat his feat training her from scratch to get his top assassin bodyguard back, however Betsy's body rebelled against his wishes. Nyoirin's only strategy was scorched earth to eliminate both Matsu'o, Wolverine and the X-Men's competition because it dawned to him that the body swap plan would end with his demise. And it did because he was trapped in an unholy alliance with Matsu'o, Shinobi Shaw and Tatsuo. Mobsters are creeps irregardless, it's how they survive, but Nyoirin was bitter and heartbroken too.

Any thoughts on Claremont's obsession with changing the races of characters or Betsy focusing on her pilot, modelling and spy days rather than forced ninja culture?

Rahsaan said...

@Jaime, I know about those other problematic changes, but not the FF one. I didn't even know that Claremont wrote FF at one point.

In a perfect world, where race was dismantled to be a social construct, this all would be no issue save for somone being forced to look different or forced to live in someone else's skin. However, that is not the case as most people don't know that race is a construct nor do they understand the nuances of it. I think Claremont does a disservice with these stories as he often makes the white characters who formerly had agency into enslaved entities with their race changes and he never addresses tthe ways in which their lives have changed in society once they're stuck as non-white. All the more egregious as Claremont obviously has an understanding of the allegory of his mutants to real life non-white people who face oppression, micro aggressions, etc.

Based on his last interview about this, I think he would do better if he ever decided to write another race-change story again. I'm sure the Interwebs would make him do better.

Didn't Sharon Friedlander and Tom Corsi both evenytually die at the hands of villains without ever being changed back to their former selves?

Jaime Braz said...

@Rahsaan Chisolm At the Fantastic Four point, Claremont was beating a dead horse with his innumerable body swaps. It was a Freaky Friday when he first introduced the trope with Storm swapping places with Emma. Got frightening with Sharon and Tom and when it happened to Betsy it was devastating. From then on every time Betsy appeared in panels I felt a squeeze at my heart. Was like I understood the body dysphoria Betsy was going through. Must've been a nightmare to not have an identity of belonging to herself.

The F4 body swap happened in volume 3 with issues 11 and 12 as the team fought at Genosha entering the bodies of some villain's henchmen. Luckily it lasted two issues not twenty eight years as in the case of Psylocke.

The beauty with the X-Men is the all-encompassing view of universal diversity and its inclusive spirit of different cultures united under persecution. However, swapping races and bodies is a violation of bodily integrity and mental privacy. Our bodies are temples which we have to respect and care for. Race is a gift from nature that makes us unique and is immutable. Betsy's uniqueness was flushed down the toilet when she was imprisoned into a Japanese woman. She ceased to be herself and became a pastiche of incongruities and racial stereotypes. Out of the blue she started acting more Japanese than British. Claremont nixed nurture and nature at one stroke. Imagine that happened to Black Panther or Shang Chi.

Rahsaan said...

@Jaime, have you ever read or watched Altered Carbon? I have not, but I’ve heard that the main protagonist is an Asian man whose consciousness has been placed in a white man’s body. Apparently, the Netflix series neglects to deal with the emotional ramifications his man faces adapting to being in the body of someone whose lived a very different reality from his based on the construct of race, so some people felt that did a disservice to both viewers and the protagonist as the book apparently does deal with this in exposition for a significant period of time in the story. Like I said, I haven’t read or watched, but it sounds like the Netflix series falls short in the same way the Claremont does with his stories of this kind.

Jaime Braz said...

@Rahsaan Chisolm Yes I've heard about it. Given I'm sensitive to body swaps and race changes, I can't stomach the idea. Netflix is on my blacklist for that, causing drama with the MCU corner and Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events. I'm open to racial change and new interpretations for fictional characters but not those who apply to history, traditions and myths. For example I can't accept Tezcatlipoca and Xipe Totec being non Native American, Olurun or Yemaya non African Black, Odin or Heimdallr non Scandinavian and Zeus or Hades non Greek. Otherwise it's cultural theft and appropriation. Netflix did something racist with the Black casting in Lemony Snicket's adaptation. First it chose Black actors to play coward and incompetent characters like Arthur Poe and aunt Josephine. But the worst was having aunt Josephine eat a banana of all things in the Curdled Cave and then utter in animal scream the word banana on the boat. Still rings awfully in my ears.
