'Uncanny X-Men' Writer Matthew Rosenberg Promises a "Big and Scary" Series

Marvel.com: Uncanny X-Men is making its big return this fall, and its creative team is promising a super dramatic series! The ongoing series, which kicks off on Wednesday, November 14, will reunite every mutant on the planet after a "tragic" event. But will all those mutants in one place prove dangerous?

Marvel.com spoke to Uncanny X-Men writer Matthew Rosenberg to get an inside look at how he's telling the story, which he's writing alongside Kelly Thompson and Ed Brisson. Rosenberg says the trio "have actually been working on the book for months." He added that they're "good friends who were all doing X books before this, so we'd talk all the time anyway." As a group, the three writers pitched their ideas to Marvel and continued communicating on a daily basis. "Pretty sure neither of them will ever want to talk to me ever again when this is over."

Bringing the X-Men to life are what Rosenberg calls "a true murderers row of talent" -- the artists who are making the stories "explode onto the page in ways we couldn't have imagined." Mahmud Asrar (X-Men Red), R.B. Silva (X-Men Blue), Yildiray Cinar (Weapon X), and Pere Perez (Rogue and Gambit) are all on board for Uncanny X-Men with Leinil Frances Yu and Edgar Delgado providing artwork for the covers.

Rosenberg also writes Astonishing X-Men and Phoenix Resurrection, which respectively had a "narrow scope" and a focus on one character -- Jean Grey. Uncanny X-Men "is the opposite of all that," he said. "We are making Uncanny as huge as we can. We're approaching it [as if] this might very well be the last X-Men story ever, so let's make it matter. We're doing all hands on deck, fate of the world stuff. It's big and scary."

To that point, Rosenberg and the team will be putting the mutants through the ringer, starting with the 10-part story “Disassembled.” He said: "I think the best X-Men stories need two things that often seem in opposition, but are entirely crucial. First they need real danger. The X-Men go through more pain, hardships, and suffering than any other superheroes. That's their lot in life. And they always come out the other side, but that should be tested every time. And the second thing a great X-Men story needs is creators who love the X-Men. It's easy to hurt and kill characters. It's easy to blow things up with no thought. When it matters, when the audience cares, is when there is real pain and heartbreak behind it. When the storytellers were as upset doing it as you are reading it, that's when an X-Men story works. And I'd put Kelly, Ed, and my love of X-Men against almost anyone in the world."

And what can Rosenberg tell us about what we can look forward to in Uncanny X-Men beyond the first three issues? "You might see someone you weren't expecting."

Uncanny X-Men #1 will go on sale Wednesday, November 14. Stay tuned to Marvel.com for the latest news!

This loosk really good and shall put to rest all these complaints that people won't recognize Psylocke in her original body. She looks pretty much the same except with a new uniform.

I can't wait for the new age of Betsy Braddock.

Okay this looks dope ! Betsy looks the same indeed except for new hair color and uniform. Don't care if it's original body or new hair color in her same body XD, all is possible until we see the conclusion on 22nd of August. This team looks Awesome ! You know how long it's been since Those members were united ?! Specially Betsy and Jean and Beast ?! Now Iceman and Laura too ?! Okay I'm sorry I said Marvel may have screwed after getting Betsy's body back, because this cover on it's own is PRICELESS to me.

Sounds very interesting!! Storm and Betsy are so close, I love seeing them together. I missed Cannonball and appreciate his return too. I am also fond of Psylocke, Beast and Jubes dynamics. Nightcrawler brings another hearty touch to the team. I'm surprised they didn't bring Logan in (at least not yet).
After Betsy switching to her british body I have even renewed my hopes of ever seeing Sage back too hahah!!

Rosenberg, show us your love for the X-Team: bring back that diamond's days!

Wow that cover is ugly! WTF is Nightcrawler doing with his arm? And Laura is like "look at my cool claws" it's a mess.

But I also like seeing the old Reload team nearly reunited. Bishop, Nightcrawler, Storm, Psylocke, Cannonball, X-23. Only Rachel wasn't included here.

Now, Outback, here I come to starr trouble with you. LOL. Any chance you think Bets’ transformation is the result of either the ongoing Sinister DNA subplot in the other Hunt fo Wolvie title or this Jamie resurrection over in Black Widow?

Rahsaan said...

Or would that make too much sense for Marvel? As she doesn’t look like that deadful Sapphire Styx character. LOL.

And poor Jean... You’re right. She looks terrible. She looks like a Gen 1 Sentinel. I keep saying that. This is worst tan her tan and blue 90s look. Jean’s best uniforms to date: the red and yellow X-Factor one with the fave mask, the White Phoenix of the Crown look, and Here Comes Tomorrow Phoenix leather.

Kurt is vogueing.

Rahsaan, in response to your question about what I think Betsy's transformation is the result of, I have a third scenario that was pointed out by someone on Instagram -

since she looks so much like Jessica Jones now, my thought is that she made friends with Jessica and now they're sharing outfits.

The artist spent too much time focusing on Bishop, and then partway through with Nightcrawler he remembered he was on a deadline. Betsy is the only one with eyes lol.

Psylocke's uniform here is different and I don't like it. The other one from the group pic of Disassembled looked better, that was classy. Guess it will take some time for all the artists to get accustomed to drawing the new outfit.

Well, this image just kinda shows that, Asian or White, Psylocke is only recognizable with her hair combed on the side and a psychic knife (or butterfly effect)

In any case, since Silvesti, Davis, and Lee, no other artist has been able of drawing Psylocke like a Japanese Asian.

So in the end, the body change makes no difference at all....

*sings* Transformers! More than meets the eye! Transfo... oh wait this is X-Men?

Wow, looks like Jessica Jones for real. Betsy definitely lookin like Jewel, with that hair and costume.

Vigmed, everyone’s uniforms look like crap here. Hell, everyone looks like crap here even if we bypass their uniforms. I have never like Lenil’s art.

Rahsaan said...

Also, no artist can make Jean’s getup look good. It really is a horrid uniform.

Rahsaan said...

Damn! They censored you!! LMFAOOL!

Rahsaan said...

Also, what’s scenario 3?

Rahsaan said...

Speaking of he Transformers, are any of you old enough to recall the Marvel-published comic from the 80s?

Anonymous said...

@Rahsaan, I am. I even remember a character named Circuit Breaker, who was not a Transformer, but rather an antagonist of of both Autobots and Decepticons. Remember her? The Beyonder met her once in Secret Wars 2. Around the time he fell in love with Alison Blaire AKA Dazzler. Hey, you asked...

Rahsaan said...

You are real good!!! I forgot about Circuit Breaker!! I never knew she met the Beyonder though.

Anonymous said...

@Rahsaan, I think it was near the end of Secret Wars 2, when the Beyonder was becoming a little unhinged. She tells him how she was crippled in a fight between the Transformers and thus, why she hates all of them. It was actually the only time I saw a Transformers character interact with someone in the 'main' Marvel universe... even though they are all in the same continuity.

That looks like the same Psylocke that existed before this unwanted surprise in the comics was announced.

Rahsaan said...

True, because most artists disrespected Asian people by drawing her as white anyway when she was supposed to be white in an Asian body. Even more reason the whole Kwannon fiasco needs to end. It’s all just disrespectful.

Unknown said...

Yes, but most X-Men fans either don't know about the Kwannon storyline or forgot about it since it was such a long time ago. So they may see Psylocke established as an Asian woman who might as well have grown up in British surroundings.
All the more reason to keep her the same.
