Picked up the issue. This has been a great first arc. I wonder how much of this was Warren and how much was Archangel? Either way this is a new dent in an already shaky relationship.

Has anyone else noticed that Jerome Opeña made Betsy look somewhat Asian in the beginning, but as the comic went on, she looked less and less Asian? Or is that just me?

No, I noticed it as well. Especially in the close up shots & the final panels. Either way I hope Opena returns for another arc sometime. I'd like to see his take on original pink fluffy outfit Betsy.

Sky,
This is precisely why they just need to find a way to resurrect her body and have her still be a ninja but in that form. Especially, since Nyorin (or whatever his name was in the retcon) trained that body in mortal combat. All the artists seem to want her to be her old self anyhow. All they need is to just start drawing her with lighter-colored and wavy hair, and we'll be good to go.

Should have directed that to you as well, richi.

I noticed this too. I find this immensely irritating and even offensive. Marvel is so damn insistent on keeping Bets in the asian body, yet they can't be bothered to actually draw her as such 90% of the time. What was the damn point of either the "body switch" or the "plastic surgery to make her look asian" if they were just going to keep drawing her as a white girl? They need to either start consistently drawing her as an asian or they should just do the re-switch again and make it stick.

I vote for the re-switch, psyknight. I'm sure she'd love to have her old face back. And as I mentioned, the retcon allowed for the fact that her original body is conditioned and trained for fighting just as well as the Kwannon one. Hence, it'd be the best of both worlds. Plus, Fraction in his hideous "Sisterhood" arc has already shown her original body capable of producing a psychic knife and hand-to-hand combat. We'd probably get some precognition and psycho-blasting too! ;-)

I love Psylocke fans. We just had an amazing arc. Betsy in one of the greatest moments of her life, where she is finally shining and standing out, and all her fans can talk about is "wah wah wah I want her old body back :(" and complain and nitpick. Really?

What about the great characterization Remender gave her? What about Betsy standing up to her beliefs even if it means going against the ones she loves? What about the look on her face after the boy is killed? You can tell it's something that will haunt her for a long time... Dude, this is the best Psylocke EVER.

Ben, agreed. You sure told us. Ha! Shame on me and the others.
Seriously, though and as I mentioned here on Butterfly... Remender promised when he replied to me via e-mail that we can expect tons more Psylocke surprises and nods to her past as the book goes on.

And yes, Ben... you're right. This is the best Psylocke book ever, and that includes her mini-series.

@Rahsaan

How do I contact Rick Remender? Does he have a public e-mail to answer fans?

Rahsaan said...

luck,
I don't recall the URL, but google him and his site is one of the first... if not the first... URL in the results. At his site, he has a "Contact Me" link. Click on it and it will lead you to a page with fields for your name, e-mail address and a message body.

He wrote me back the same day from his Gmail account, and was extremely humble, gracious and cool... and excited that his book is being received so well.

He also assured me that he's a PSylocke fan from way back when she was created by Alans Moore and Davis!

Ben, you're absolutely right about this arc and her characterization and I do appreciate it. I can't tell you how much I am looking forward to seeing how this will be followed up.

The issue about how Psylocke is drawn has just been knawing at me for a long time and I just needed to vent.
