X-Men Monday #76 – Jordan D. White Answers Your X of Swords Week 1 Questions

AiPT!: The latest, greatest X-Men epic, X of Swords, has finally begun! And while most comics can be devoured in 10-15 minutes, it’s likely you read last week’s Excalibur #12 and X-Men #12, and then immediately reread them again… and again… and you’ll probably read them one more time ahead of this Wednesday’s X of Swords: Creation #1. There was A LOT to absorb in those two issues, and many X-Fans had questions. Fortunately, X-Men Senior Editor Jordan D. White has answers!

AIPT: Could you clarify the role Otherworld plays in the Krakoa/Arakko/Okkara situation. Lilith asked if Arakko is lost on the same pocket dimension as Otherworld, or if Arakko is only accessible through Otherworld, which works more like an intermediate point.

Jordan: I think you will know the answer to this a lot more clearly two days from now. X of Swords: Creation #1 should hopefully answer any questions you have about what Otherworld has to do with it and where Arakko is relative to everything else.

AIPT: Saturnyne has made it clear that being a Captain Britain is more than picking up the Amulet of Right and swearing to serve the British nation. After 12 issues, Betsy still comes off very unsure and lost in the role, even less edgy than she naturally is, which is a direct contrast to her role as Psylocke, where she seemed more comfortable and sure of herself. Is this something Betsy truly wants?

Jordan: That’s a good question. And I think that’s a question that will be put to Betsy, right? She didn’t choose it at all. It was thrust on her and she reluctantly took it on. Is it something that she’s going to want to stick with permanently or will she eventually see the opportunity to say, great, let me go back to being myself and–well, I mean, she’s still herself, but you know what I mean–to going a different direction and give being Captain Britain back to someone more apt to it or somebody who wants it. And I think that’s very fertile ground for a story as well. And maybe we’ll see some of that in X of Swords.

So it seems Betsy's time as Captain Britain may be coming to an end, after all...

I like her as Captain Britain, but I know most people here don't, so this may be a good thing for her and for us. I mean, I like her as Psylocke, too, and she already has a great uniform as Psylocke that she barely got to wear so far (after the Disassembled arc, she also wore it for some panels in Excalibur #1, so I guess she still has it, right?).

And... am I the only person who still has some trouble differentiating Saturnyne and Emma? When I saw the last panel in this article, I thought, "why is Monet trying to punch Emma?", before realizing this is a different White Queen...

YES! I cannot wait for this droll CB phase to be over.

I also read the other parts of the interview and it was surprisingly insightful. It's kinda sad that Colossus will be absent from X of Swords, but other than that, it seems promising. And it's nice that White does acknowledge that Jean's soul also has Madelyne's soul inside of it (hopefully both souls have a more harmonious relationship than Kwannon's mind had when it was inside Betsy's).

Kinda like Morrigan's and Lilith's fusion in their endings in Vampire Savior.

I didnt interpret that as Betsy is no longer going to be CB. No way the head editor would spoil something like that so casually lol

Selene and Hsien are my Externals. White noticed nun Selene is precious and gets my style bonus.

Betsy IS PSYLOCKE! Betsy IS THE BUTTERFLY!

I'll count the times a trope was thrust on Betsy.

1. Weak female brainwashed and mind controlled.

2. 1st Captain Britain ride the loss of her eyes.

3. Super model is made TV hostess.

4. More mind control.

5. Weak female is captured by Asian mafia.

6. Weak female is mind controlled by Asian mafia.

7. Weak female is body swapped by Asian mafia.

8. Betsy turns Asian. Yellowface is her status.

9. Sexy and trampy equals strength. Jim Lee the coochie cutter maker.

10. Betsy the serial killer.

11. Eating disorder and body dysmorphia.

12. Betsy the body snatcher meme.

13. 2nd Captain Britain ride the loss of her identity.

Tropes tropes tropes.

I read over Excalibur and here's what Betsy has done so far lol:

-Took everyone plus Shogo to Otherworld even after Jubilee asked her to take him to Krakoa first, which leads to his dragon fire tearing the veil between realms and unleashing monsters on 616 earth

-Insisted on including Shogo in battle as a dragon and he eventually gets severely wounded

-Allows Clan Akkaba to trick her into a distraction while said above monsters unleash on earth.

-Fails to save Rogue from her sleep stasis with her telepathy, meanwhile Rachel does it with no problem at all

-doesnt seem capable of creating telekinetic forcefields (remember when she could move mountains with her TK?) When a volley of arrows are fired at the team so she tells the team to take cover and duck 🙄

-refuses to fight back against Brian so Jamie nudges the fight to force her hand to kill him. If he hadn't she would have been killed and eventually resurrected but Brian would have remained forever a prisoner of Morgan and Morgan would have remained ruler of Avalon

-Rictor has to explain to Betsy that the obviously, blatantly untrustworthy Lord Bloodstone cant be trusted and not to naively go along with his plan because apparently Betsy had experienced a lobotomy

-while #10 isn't technically Betsy its based on her and she believed to be the real Betsy and allowed herself to be hit by a missle instead of again using a force field or didnt even bother with that stupid TK shield theyre forcing down our throats or attempt to dodge it with her flight lol

So many fails in 12 issues

@randybear all that are #13 on my checklist of tropes. Nerfed Betsy shoved in her bro's armor.

To be fair, you literally could compile a list of Betsy's fails in every run. I'm pretty sure she had more fails in Remender's run. Not to mention, she was always crying and whining in Remender's second year and throughout Bunn's Uncanny X-Men. Betsy failing is not an Excalibur thing.

Lool I never said Betsy was perfect I specifically mention Excalibur as it's her current status quo and apparently to everyone else shes sooo amazing as CB but I dint think they're reading the same book lmao or they haven't read the issues more than once and its been a while etc

Either way my points stand. Agree or not its your prerogative.

But shes been written as a complete fail and im SO happy that other writers will finally get to writer her during Swords cause Tinis Betsy is harder to get through that a mouthful of peanut butter.

Betsy is weak in Excalibur. Apocalypse remote controls her. Claremont Betsy I know would psycho blast him.
