Carey Extends His "Legacy" to Space & Beyond

CBR News spoke with Mike Carey about his plans for X-Men Legacy.

Issue #250 hits stores in just a couple of months. What can you tell us about the milestone issue?

Our main story in the issue kicks off a new arc that runs until issue #253. It's a story about Legion and some of the things that happen to him as a result of "Age of X" and the restoration of the X-Men's normal reality.

Issue #250 also has a back-up story that sets up the arc that begins in issue #254. It also explains some of the lingering mysteries from "Age of X." Specifically those relating to Revenant; her identity and how she came to be among the X-Men.

I understand this back-up also shines some light on another lingering mystery; the whereabouts of Havok, Polaris and Marvel Girl.

Oh yeah, we see them. Not just in glimpses, they're in the thick of the action. All three of those characters are very cool and fun to write and I've missed having them around -- which is the main reason why I floated the idea of bringing them back in like this.

Since we last saw those three characters, they were in space. Will the arc that begins in #254 take your team to the cosmic corner of the Marvel U?

Yes. The last we heard from them I believe was in "Realm of Kings" and they were on their way home. Obviously they never got there.

So in the story that begins in #254, four of our six protagonists end up in a very remote section of space. They're dealing with a crisis that arose in the aftermath of the "War of Kings" -- the war that was fought between the Kree (led by the Inhumans) and the Shi'Ar. But you don't have to know anything about the "War of Kings" to know what's going on. We're focusing on the destruction wrought in the conflict on some of the remoter parts of the Shi'ar empire. We'll be looking at what that meant for a strategically unimportant but narratively interesting part of the galaxy.

During "War of Kings," Professor X's ex-wife and former Shi'Ar empress Lilandra Neramani was murdered. Refresh my memory -- have we seen Xavier react to that news yet? Does he even know of Lilandra's death and will his feelings about her murder be part of this story?

As far as we know, he has no idea this has happened. And he doesn't find out in this story, although some of the other members of the team do. That means Professor X will find out very soon.

Earlier, you commented on just how powerful the new team in "X-Men: Legacy" is. I'd imagine the space arc will test their mettle with some pretty powerful adversaries. What can you tell us about the dangers they'll face?

We have, effectively, a running firefight going on between two alien groups. One if the Shi'ar, the other is a new and very scary race called the Grad Nan Holt. But we also have a not-very-natural disaster going on around them, which will probably end up destroying both sides. The X-Men are trying to avert this disaster and drawing fire from both sides in the process.

It's fast-paced, action-oriented sci-fi story. The setting is a planet-sized space station which has become a battlefield and is falling apart: imagine someone trying to write Larry Niven's Ringworld in 80 pages -- that's kind of what this is.

Finally, what can you tell us about your plans for "Legacy" following the space arc? We're only a few months away from "Schism," the event story line destined to tear the X-Men apart. Will "X-Men: Legacy" tie-into "Schism"?

Yes, the team will be drawn into the events of "Schism" and we'll see how they respond to things. "Schism" will be a supremely important storyline for "X-Men: Legacy." Everybody on that team is going to have a very powerful response, and Magneto and Professor X in particular are going to have to define their position. The result of that may redefine our status quo a bit.

X-Men Legacy #247 Spoilers

Spoilers: Gambit and Rogue confront "X", who's actually Moira MacTaggart. The showdown between the Force Warriors and Moonstar's Cadre never comes to pass, as Professor X uses his powers to sway Legion, and then leaves with his son to go and inform the entire population of Fortress X, face to face, with what's happening. Charles explains that Moira isn't Moira. The process of erasing personas inside Legion by Dr. Nemesis did not go as planned. Xavier realized there would be a side-effect. While studying inside Legion's mind, he discovered what that was. Some of the isolated personalities were "killed" and left behind "remains", which apparently created a whole new personality, "X", which is like the antibody response to what was being done to Legion's mind, and it began to "eat" personalities, to gain their strength. Xavier was going to take it on in psychic combat on the Psychic Plane, but X pulled something from Legion's mind that it knew Xavier wouldn't just attack: the image of Moira. X then managed to knock out Xavier and create the pocket reality that is "Age of X". But upon the truth being revealed, X has decided to refocus its efforts on an Exonim Sentinel attack, creating the enemy forces right inside Fortress X, on the mutants' side of the realm.

New Mutants #23 Spoilers (Age of X, Chapter 4)

Spoilers: Magneto catches up to Legacy (Rogue) and Gambit. Magneto is rebelling as well because he feels there is something wrong. He shows them the Fortress X plans and point to a room he didn't build. He sends them to see what's in the room while he provides the distraction. "X" loses track of Magneto, then tells Moonstar that he has also betrayed them, so now they are looking for him. Rogue borrows Gambit's powers to get to the room Magneto wants them to infiltrate. Magneto frees Kitty and Professor X - he's trying to rescue them. Whomever has created the chaos, its a woman. Xavier says he couldn't stop her. "She took it all. Turned it inside out". He says they have to find her and make her give it back. Rogue and Gambit enter the room. They find Dr. Nemesis frozen in place trying to touch a keyboard. We find out that Nemesis was looking at scans of someone's brain. They find a box, Rogue looks inside and drops the box. Moonstar and her gang catch up to Magneto, they accuse him of murder, he says he's killed no one. They come to a truce until they get all the answers. Something drops on Magnetos and knocks him out, the Force Warriors have taken over control and have relieved Magneto of his command. Gambit asks Rogue what she saw in the box. The whole universe is in the box which is why there is nothing outside the walls of Fortress X...

X-Men Legacy: MMXI - Liveblog!

• After Age of X, X-Men Legacy will still be Rogue-centric, but it will be a little bit more of a team book. For at least the next 7 or 8 months, she'll be leading a team that will be dealing with the fallout of Age of X as well as other new threats

• Rogue's team is made up of a number of characters that have been weaving in and out of Legacy for a while now. Most of the team members will be around in the book for quite some time to come.

• Going into issue #250, Rafa Sandoval is joining the book as its new artist. Clay Mann will still be drawing the book as well.

• There's fall out after Age of X ends, both for individual characters and for the book.

• The arc that begins at 250 has quite a rogues gallery of villains who are all completely new. They all have something in common that makes it different from most X-villains. The team has to fight their way through them to get to their leader, Styx. The arc is called The Orpheus Effect.

• The arc following that isn't set on earth, paying off something they've only begun to set up in the very background.

• There are some very interesting and loaded relationships in the group, beginning with Professor X and Magneto; Professor X and Legion; and Rogue's relationships with both Gambit and Magneto. There's also some past history between Gambit and Frenzy.

• Rogue's role [as a mentor to the kids] is up for grabs, since she's leaving Utopia for quite some time. They'll be coming back to some characters later on, though.

• Gambit's role will be kicking ass, taking names. His death persona will be addressed.

• Iceman is a character to watch at the end of 2011.

• Issue #250 is oversized with a Rogue-centric backup.

Age of X Assessment: Chapter 1

Who are the five members of the Force Warriors? How are they viewed by the rest of the X-Men?

Mike Carey: The five are Psylocke, Legion, Hellion, Stand-Off—which is to say Carmella Unuscione—and Revenant. In light of what we've just been talking about, you could compare their role to Legacy's: they're too important to risk in the thick of the fighting, because without the force walls, Fortress X can't survive. But they're much more visible than Legacy, their role is a daily and ubiquitous one, and they're not associated with death and loss. Quite the opposite: they're the face of survival and defiance, and everyone respects and even loves them.

We spoke about Namor and Storm last time, but why did you decide to pair up Frenzy with Cyclops/Basilisk and Iceman with Psylocke romantically?

Mike Carey: Iceman and Psylocke was just a "why not?" That Dick Van Dyke dialogue came to me as I was scripting, so I stuck it in. The pairing of Basilisk and Frenzy is much less random, and I think it tells you something about both of them. First, this is a Frenzy who's much closer to the heart of things than the Frenzy in regular continuity: someone who's embraced a positive role and despite her more fierce and wayward instincts, sticks to it. But also, this is a Scott Summers who is much more reckless and self-destructive. There's an edge of violence and dysfunction in the relationship which we glimpse in this issue and see again later. Although, having said that, there's a real passion, too. They sort of work. You remember that line from [the television show] “Firefly” spoken by Wash? "A lot of people don't get me and Zoe, at first..." It's like that. Your first thought is "say, what?" but I'm hoping that people will see the way they watch each other's backs and keep each other standing.

Mike Carey Talks Psylocke & Iceman and More

Mike Carey shares a few words with the readers in X-Men Legacy 245. The writer also talks about some of the new relationships in Age of X. Check it out:

Mike Carey: Writing a story like this is a bit like playing a jazz riff on an existing song. I say that as someone who's not that into jazz, so if the comparison feels a bit forced, I apologize. But what I mean is that you take familiar elements and you play variations on them, so that part of the pleasure is rediscovering those old friends - old notes, old melodies, old themes - in strange disguises.

I don't think any of the relationships that we see here - Scott Summers and Frenzy, Psylocke and Iceman, Storm and Namor - is inherently implausible. In fact, I think there's a clear logical through-line in each case. I also think that what all of the core characters become in the Age of X makes sense in terms of their essential natures. But if you disagree, come at me. Umm... I mean on a message board or at a Con, obviously, not with a lead pipe in the library.

So yeah, that was one of the themes in this opening issue: old friends in strange disguises. I hope you enjoy measuring the distances and the angles between who they are and who they were. I know you'll enjoy Clay's spectacular whole-cloth inventions of a time and a place that - for all its weirdness - is just one turn of the road away from the world we know.

That is, the world we think we know.

New Mutants #22 Spoilers (Age of X Ch.2)

Spoilers: Jubilee speaks to Chamber about what exactly they're fighting for other than to simply "survive". Chamber tells her they will fight till the end and maybe one day their story will inspire others to roll their sleeves up and fight. After Rogue speaks to Magneto about Kitty and that she would like to talk to her to see what she was doing outside of the force fields. Magneto says that Kitty is Danger's prisoner and not his. (Even though specifically he gave orders to Danger that Kitty could only be seen and heard by Magneto). Rogue goes to see Madison Jeffries about the camera she recovered from Kitty. Madison mentions the camera is pretty damaged, but that all the pictures taken are just blank. Rogue then borrows Jeffries powers and she goes to see Kitty in her cell. On her way she encounters Blindfold in a cell (dressed in her Young X-Man uniform..) she pleads with Rogue telling her everyone is confused and that everyone was someone else. She tells Rogue she needs to go see Professor Xavier. Rogue finally finds Kitty and asks about the camera and what she saw outside of Fortress X, but before she can reveal any information Danger finds Rogue, and her powers borrowed from Jeffries don't affect Danger. Rogue was able to take Kitty's powers (but not her memories) and she flees as she does she runs across Xavier who is unconscious she touches him and has a surge of voices and images of everyone this same surge of information hits everyone else. Rogue continues to flee and escapes from Danger. Magneto gives orders to have Rogue hunted down and we see the New Mutants squad ready to pursue her.

X-Men: Legacy #245 Spoilers (Age of X)

X-Men Legacy #245: Rogue (or known in this reality as Legacy or Reaper) narrates the events of the how mutants are hunted and illegal and it's been 1,000 days since the war on mutants begin. Issue opens with all the "X-Men" fighting against anti-mutant soldiers who are attempting to penetrate Fortress X which is their stronghold. Apparently in this reality Cannonball takes up the role of field leader much like Cyclops in 616 reality. Tempo is killed in battle and "Reaper" (Rogue) is called to absorb her essence and memories into her before she passes. Reapder tells Tempo that it's okay because she will always live in through her. Afterwards the "Force Warriors" arrive a team of psychics (including Psylocke) arrive to rebuild and repair the forcefield that protects Fortress X from intruders. Rogue mentions that without the Force Warriors they wouldn't stand a chance as the forcefield takes hours to be destroyed by anti-mutant forces. In this reality Cyclops and Frenzy, Psylocke and Iceman, and Storm and Namor are all respective couples. Rogue wanders around just outside Fortress X (but inside the force field) expressing she needs time alone to absorb and deal with all the memories she has just taken from Tempo. She notices someone passing through the forcefield onto Fortress X back up arrives, but it turns out it's only Kitty Pryde. Rogue notices her placing something in an abandoned car before the others get a hold of Kitty. As the others leave, Rogue finds the item Kitty hid and sees that it's a camera she looks through the pictures apparently stumbling upon a great secret. Later we see Magneto bringing in Kitty and alerting Danger that no one must see her or speak to her and only he may. As he approaches Kitty's cell we see the Cuckoos, Martha and what looks like Xavier all jailed.

Notes: Namor refers to Psylocke as "Lady Braddock" not sure if that's her codename, but it's cute.
