Meet the Maximum X-Men!

Mutants by birth, heroes by choice. Earth’s Mightiest Mutants are stepping up to fill the void left behind by the Avengers in the aftermath of Armageddon.

Storm leads a team of fan-favorite and dark horse mutants against massive threats including the return of Annihilus, in an all-new ongoing series from writer Christopher Yost and artist Tony S. Daniel.

Pick up the first issue of Maximum X-Men when it goes on sale in comic shops on December 2, 2026.

‘Maximum X-Men’ #1 Previews Assembles a Mighty Roster for “The Avenger Situation”

Marvel.com: As the dust settles on the Marvel Universe, who will fill the Avengers-sized void left in Armageddon’s wake? The answer lies in Maximum X-Men #1, where writer Christopher Yost and artist Tony S. Daniel assemble an all-new X-Men team that will step up to the plate as Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Led by Storm, the elite team brings together mutant Avengers and X-Men mainstays to stop a full-on invasion from the Negative Zone.

Dubbed “The Avenger Situation,” the series’ first arc pulls no punches as the X-Men battle hordes of inter-dimensional invaders. Get an exclusive first look at Maximum X-Men #1 with the lettered preview below and read on as Yost and Daniel tease what’s in store for the upcoming series!

MARVEL.COM: Tell us more about the mission statement of the Maximum X-Men team in a post-Armageddon world.

YOST: It’s a much harder world for Super Heroes after the explosive events of Armageddon. And while Wolverine’s got his team of street-level heroes, the days of Captain America, Iron Man and Thor seem to be over. So, who steps up to fill the void they left behind when world-ending threats arrive?

The 1984 Secret Wars series was foundational for me. And one of my favorite moments in it was when the X-Men volunteered to deal with Galactus as Captain America and the rest of the heroes went to take down the various super villains. And I loved that. In my mind, that’s what Maximum X-Men is, the X-Men reminding the world they’re heroes. It’s not about mutants or humans; it’s about saving the world.

MARVEL.COM: Storm is the leader of this X-Men team. What parts of her character do you hope to explore in this role as Maximum X-Men unfolds?

YOST: Storm’s led the X-Men before. She’s been a thief, queen, sorceress, and a goddess even. The hope here is to fuse all those things together into a kind of Maximum Storm. If you read my X-Men: Worlds Apart (2008) mini-series, you’ll get a pretty good idea of what I think of Ororo. She does not compromise.

MARVEL.COM: Maximum X-Men enlists many mutant heroes. How did you decide who made the cut for this roster?

YOST: Tom Brevoort and I talked about the team and what vibe we were going for. Classic Claremont/Lee era is where we landed. Characters like Storm, Wolverine, Colossus, Psylocke, Bishop, it feels like classic X-Men. Adding in a few new additions and some of our favorites like Firestar and Justice, and even introducing a new character in issue #2. We wanted a good mix of powers and personalities and I’m excited to be able to write this team together.

MARVEL.COM: The roster assembled in Maximum X-Men packs quite the punch. Were there any characters whose powers you were excited to show off with your art in this first arc?

DANIEL: There are so many of them, it’s a bit hard to say just one. I’m just drawing most of these characters for the first time, save for Wolverine, who I’ve been able to get a couple variant covers for in the past. But I’m loving Storm’s effects and her flowy hair, the billowing cape and electricity around her. She’s been fun.

I also am having a wonderful time drawing Betsy. We’re seeing a lot of her butterfly effects throughout the issues, and she has that sword and shield. I think I’ll work in her staff at some point, it’s too cool not to. I’m having a ton of fun with everyone though; I couldn’t be more excited to work on these characters with Christopher.

MARVEL.COM: What was it like working together on Maximum X-Men?

YOST: It’s a dream come true. Tony’s so excited to be on X-Men, and that excitement is coming through in the pages. This was always meant to be an action book, and the first two issues are basically nothing BUT action… and Tony is delivering in a way that makes me literally giddy. Just you wait.

DANIEL: I’ve been a fan of Christopher’s for some time. He thinks so big, and so cinematically, it’s fun to read and work from his scripts. He’s a very visual writer. Every description, to me, it’s as if I’m working with a writer/director, I can see what he’s trying to convey clearly. A lot of his scenes read like a big-budget movie; his action scenes are very large and epic. But his quiet scenes have a lot of movement in them as well. It’s as close as I’ve come to drawing a movie. It’ll be worth all the work we’re pouring into this series, and I think fans will be excited to see what’s in store!

Check out the lettered preview for Maximum X-Men #1 above and pick the issue up at your local comic book shop on December 2.

Christopher Yost Reveals Maximum X-Men’s First Arc: “The Avenger Situation”

Maximum X-Men #1 cover

Christopher Yost has shared new details about Maximum X-Men on Bluesky, revealing that the opening story arc is titled “The Avenger Situation.” Spanning five issues, the entire storyline will unfold over approximately 16 hours, keeping the team's first adventure within a remarkably tight window. That compressed timeline suggests a busy day ahead for the X-Men, with little breathing room between the opening chapter and the arc's conclusion.

Yost also clarified Wolverine's role in the series: Logan will come and go from the team, although readers can expect him to appear throughout issues #1–5 because of the short time frame covered by the first arc. His involvement in all five chapters therefore reflects the structure of this particular adventure rather than a promise that he will be present for every mission. Maximum X-Men #1 goes on sale on December 2, 2026, kicking off “The Avenger Situation” and a new chapter for the team, including Betsy Braddock under her new codename, Butterfly.

Betsy Braddock Becomes Butterfly in Maximum X-Men

Betsy Braddock has a new codename: Butterfly! Tom Brevoort confirmed the name in his latest Substack newsletter, alongside new details and preview artwork from Maximum X-Men.

Written by Christopher Yost, with art by Tony S. Daniel, Mark Morales, and Leo Paciarotti, the series follows Avengers Armageddon. With the Avengers disbanded, Storm and Wolverine assemble a team to protect Earth from global threats. Joining them are Bishop, Colossus, Iceman, Betsy Braddock as Butterfly, Firestar, and Justice.

According to Brevoort, the book combines fast-paced action with character-driven moments. Its opening storyline involves an apparent invasion from the Negative Zone that develops into something more complicated. He also hints at a difficult road ahead for Justice.

Alongside the color page starring Betsy above, the previews include a lettered scene between Storm and Colossus, a penciled spread from issue #2, and the penciled cover for issue #3 featuring a new villain. Brevoort notes that the material is still in progress and may change before publication. Maximum X-Men #1 launches in December.

The X-Men Assemble in Maximum X-Men #1 Advance Preview

GamesRadar+: The X-Men have their work cut out for them in the wake of Avengers: Armageddon. As announced by Marvel Comics back at SDCC 2026, writer Christopher Yost and artist Tony S. Daniel will be getting the team back together, so to speak, while the Avengers pick up the pieces in Maximum X-Men this December – and we've got an exclusive preview of the interior art as well as some answers from Yost about what to expect from the new ongoing series.

"In the wake of the events of AVENGERS: ARMAGEDDON, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes are no more," the official announcement of the Maximum X-Men series reads in part. "So who will stand in defense of the Earth? The X-Men will! Storm gathers an elite team for just that task, including Wolverine, Colossus, Bishop, Iceman, Psylocke, Firestar, and Justice! Mutants by birth, heroes by choice! And their first challenge is a full-on invasion from the Negative Zone! Is this Annihilus again—or something far, far worse?"

One might argue this is answering the question of what the X-Men would be like if they were Avengers, but it's not exactly like it's the first time we've seen mutants step up in this way. As Marvel Comics and Marvel Studios continue to become more aligned, it's also worth noting that Avengers: Doomsday releases later the same month, though it doesn't seem like there will be much in the way of overlap.

Read on to see what Yost has to say about the X-Men, the new ongoing series, and more. You can also see the exclusive interior art, as well as previously revealed covers, for Maximum X-Men #1 below:

GamesRadar+: You previously described this run as having "a classic Claremont vibe." Can you explain what you mean? What is that to you, and what about Maximum X-Men has it?

Christopher Yost: I grew up on Claremont/Romita Jr. X-Men, then went back and discovered the classic Claremont/Byrne era. The Claremont vibe was big adventure, intrigue, real people with character put into positions where they had to be heroes… and soap opera. It was a lot of relationship drama amidst all the super-heroing. And there was fun!

This isn't me reinventing the wheel, this is just classic X-Men… and Maximum X-Men is all that, but probably leaning a little more into the action because it's me.

GamesRadar+: Talk me through the lineup here. There are some obvious picks, and some less-than-obvious ones. What excites you about this team?

Christopher Yost: There are some characters that just scream 'classic X-Men,' when you see a lineup that's got Wolverine, Storm, Colossus… that's X-Men. Psylocke was a newcomer when I was reading, as was Bishop… but they've cemented their places as classic members. Then you've got Firestar who's come in and out of the X-Men world, and Justice who's always leaned 'Avenger.'

But for this story we're looking at people who are all looking for HOPE most of all. They're all heroes, and this is the X-Men standing up and fighting the good fight.

Also, I love Firestar.

GamesRadar+: There have been plenty of X-Men team leaders over the years. What do you think it is about Storm (no stranger to the job herself) that's fundamentally different from the likes of other X-Men team leaders?

Christopher Yost: Compared to Professor X, Cyclops or Rogue, she's just seeing the situation from a different viewpoint. Storm has the confidence and belief in her abilities that comes with being the goddess she is. She has a benevolence to her that she'll never let be mistaken for weakness. There is nothing she won't dare, no power she won't stand up to as she protects the people she cares for. She's also got better style than all of them put together.

GamesRadar+: Everyone has their own take on this, and I'd love to hear yours: what's the purpose of the X-Men?

Christopher Yost: To protect a world that hates and fears them. The X-Men will always do the right thing, they're fighting ignorance as much as supervillains. But in this moment in time for the team, humanity seems to be coming around a little bit. In a world without Avengers… who will save us?

GamesRadar+: What does Tony S. Daniel bring to the table in Maximum X-Men, in your own words? What is it about Daniel's work here that speaks to you most?

Christopher Yost: Not only does Tony love drawing the X-Men, he's killing it on the sheer amount of action we're delivering here. There's a dynamic quality to his art that's just perfect for this kind of book, and the scale of it is something I'm excited for everyone to see. But in the end, it's love. You can tell he just loves the X-Men. And Spider-Man, which I'm gonna get in there. Probably in issue 6.

Maximum X-Men #1 is set to release on December 2, 2026. The upcoming X-Men movie is set to release on May 5, 2028, while Avengers: Doomsday releases December 18, 2026. While you wait, you can always check out our ranking of the best X-Men comics.

Chris Yost Teases Betsy and Storm’s Tea Scene in Maximum X-Men #3

Maximum X-Men writer Chris Yost has shared another exciting tease from the upcoming series, this time offering fans a glimpse at the script for Maximum X-Men #3. The excerpt features Betsy Braddock inviting Storm over for tea, giving us an early look at what appears to be a quieter and more personal moment between the two longtime X-Men. Yost had previously teased that Betsy and Ororo would “have tea” in the series, and this new script preview confirms that the scene will indeed make it onto the page. Check out Yost’s post below:

Chris Yost Teases Betsy Braddock Moments in Maximum X-Men

Maximum X-Men writer Chris Yost has been sharing a few early teases about Betsy Braddock while chatting with fans on Bluesky, including one particularly charming detail involving Storm. Yost revealed that Betsy and Ororo Munroe will share tea together in the series, teasing a quieter moment between the longtime friends and X-Men teammates.

Yost also offered a fun detail about Betsy’s powers when a fan asked whether Maximum X-Men would feature her psychic butterfly, psy-knife, psychic sword, and psychic staff. His response was: “So far everything but the staff is in there, all psychic constructs.” In other words, Betsy is already set to use several of her most iconic psychic manifestations throughout the series, including weapons and imagery associated with different periods of her history.

Maximum X-Men will debut on December 2, 2026.

X-Men Monday #350 – Jed MacKay and Tom Brevoort Talk ‘Jean Grey’, ‘DNX’, and More

AIPT!: In the milestone 350th edition of X-Men Monday, AIPT welcomed Jed MacKay and Tom Brevoort to discuss Jean Grey’s return to the X-Men, the upcoming DNX event, her new limited series, and what readers can expect from the post-DNX era.

AIPT: Tom, Jed has said DNX will “transform the X-Men dramatically.” As far as events go, DNX seems pretty small and manageable—mostly impacting X-Men and Fantastic Four. But beyond those two series, should X-Fans expect any ramifications for the wider X-Line, just as “Shadows of Tomorrow” served as a launchpad for new titles and storylines?

Tom Brevoort: As you say, the intention with DNX was to keep things tight. It’s still an impactful saga, but one of the takeaways from Age of Revelation was the feeling among fans that it asked too much of people who maybe wanted to follow all of it. So in general, not just in the X-Line but throughout Marvel, we’ve been concentrating events around a smaller group of titles. Queen in Black and the upcoming Hulk War are both like that as well—grand-scale, Marvel Universe-shattering events that you’d come to expect, but playing out across fewer books.

And in terms of after-effects, you already know about one thing that’ll be coming straight out of it: Jean Grey. And it’ll have an impact on the launch of Maximum X-Men as well, though not to the point where you’ll have to read one to follow the other. The effects will also ripple out to some degree across the other books. But the biggest place it will hit is in Alaska and in Jed’s slice of the pie, where it will be relatively seismic.

AIPT: Very soon, Shatterstar, Rictor, Betsy Braddock, and Jean Grey—characters X-Fans have asked about in past X-Men Monday editions—all return to the pages of X-Men comics. First, I hope this means you get a lot fewer intense emails from X-Fans. And second, can X-Fans expect more characters who have been off the board for a while to reappear in the months ahead?

Tom Brevoort: Ha! There’s never going to be fewer intense emails from X-Fans because every single character in the franchise has dedicated hardcore fans who want to see more of them. We’d need an infinite number of titles to get to a point where that wouldn’t happen.

But in general, we’re trying to keep any number of characters in play while still having the room to service the ones who are already in active use. Sometimes that means sprinkling in a few obscure faces into places like X-Men United. But the casts of our ongoing team titles are all pretty huge already, so finding time and space for players that aren’t already actively in them can present a challenge.

As it is, I feel like we haven’t done enough with, say, Temper over in X-Men, and I worry about losing the Exceptional X-Men kids in X-Men United a bit, and poor Shogo still hasn’t reunited with Jubilee. But that’s the storytelling struggle.

X-Men Monday #348 – Christopher Yost Talks ‘Maximum X-Men’

AIPT!: While Maximum X-Men won’t launch until December 2, 2026, Christopher Yost was nice enough to make his X-Men Monday debut to shed a bit more light on what we can expect. Let’s see what he has to say.

Before anyone panics over Yost saying Betsy “won’t be going by the name Psylocke here,” remember that she is specifically called Psylocke in the solicitation, and Marvel previously confirmed directly to The Beat’s Samantha Puc that “Betsy is Psylocke in Maximum X-Men.” So there is clearly an in-story reason for this deliberate vagueness, and we will only find out what it is when Maximum X-Men #1 comes out. Meanwhile, have fun!

AIPT: Welcome to X-Men Monday, Christopher! A team of X-Men filling the gap left by the Avengers in a post-Armageddon world. What can you share about how this concept and your involvement came about?

Christopher Yost: Tom Brevoort reached out to me, looking for a take on a new action-focused book coming out of Armageddon, and I jumped at the chance. I grew up with the X-Men, I’ve written any number of X-books over the years, and the idea of X-Men taking on Avengers villains is nothing but fun. We talked about various villains, but landed on Annihilus as the first threat the Max team would take on. But nothing’s ever simple for the X-Men, so an invasion from the Negative Zone becomes much more complicated by the end of issue 2.

AIPT: From Storm leading to Betsy Braddock back in action (and apparently going by Psylocke again) to Justice joining the X-Men — this team has fans talking. How did you go about assembling your Maximum X-Men, and what has you most excited about this particular group and their dynamics?

Christopher: I wanted a team that looked and felt like Chris Claremont and Jim Lee’s X-Men run, even to the point of leaning into the blue-and-yellow uniforms for most of the cast.

Assembling an X-team is always fun, but we wanted big names with big powers, and of course it’s a shared sandbox, so I always look to be respectful of what the other X-writers are doing and who they’re using. There’s a little crossover here and there, but we’re more like an event book than ongoing drama. Although we are ongoing, to be clear. But characters like Storm, Wolverine, Colossus, Betsy (who won’t be going by the name Psylocke here)… they just scream X-MEN.

AIPT: Firestar and Justice’s journey throughout Kurt Busiek and George Pérez’s Avengers was a highlight of the run. What can you tease about Vance settling into this team and fighting alongside the likes of Wolverine, Colossus, and Bishop?

Christopher: I love Firestar and Vance, and have used them both in either New Warriors books or an X-title in the past. Sometimes it’s good to have characters you aren’t sharing so you can mess with them a little more. Firestar’s had a rocky road, and this is the start of her journey back into the light. Vance doesn’t really want to be an X-Man, but sees the need. He’s a hero through and through; he can’t HELP but be a hero. And of course, we’re going to make him regret that.

AIPT: We’ve had Avengers-like X-teams before, such as the Uncanny Avengers. What, in your opinion, makes the Maximum X-Men unique from what we’ve seen before?

Christopher: This isn’t a merging of teams; this isn’t the Unity squad. This is the X-Men stepping up to do the job when the Avengers can’t. One of my favorite moments of all time is during the ’80s Secret Wars, when the X-Men take on Galactus while the Avengers are dealing with the various super-villains. Did they get stomped on? Sure. But they stepped up. This is going to be a lot like that. They’re HEROES, first and foremost. This isn’t them fighting for survival; this isn’t them fighting each other… this is the X-Men protecting a world that hates and fears them.

AIPT: You mentioned Annihilus… what can you share about the types of adversaries the Maximum X-Men will be facing off against?

Christopher: Annihilus kicks us off, alongside a slew of Negative Zone baddies. But there’s a new villain we’re introducing called RETRIBUTION who is going to flip everything upside down. And after that… I’m not allowed to say. But we’re elevating someone to a THANOS/Infinity Gauntlet level threat.

AIPT: Finally, it’s early days still, but how excited are you to be working with Tony S. Daniel on this series?

Christopher: I could not be happier to work with Tony. I’ve been a fan forever and am so excited to see his pages come in! He’s never done Wolverine before! He’s never drawn Spider-Man before! He’s excited to dig into this, so I’m throwing everything I can at him. We’ve got big stuff cooking, and he’s crushing it.

Betsy Braddock is PSYLOCKE and Joins the MAXIMUM X-MEN

Marvel.com: Earth’s Mightiest Mutants assemble! Earlier today at the Marvel Comics: Avengers: Armageddon panel at San Diego Comic-Con, superstar writer Chip Zdarsky shed light on the era that follows AVENGERS: ARMAGEDDON (2026), including his upcoming AVENGERS (2026) run with Marco Checchetto, where the Avengers are left to pick up the pieces of a shattered world that’s turned against them. As the Avengers take time to regroup, an all-new X-Men team rises to take their place as Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in MAXIMUM X-MEN, a new ongoing series by acclaimed writer Christopher Yost—returning to the X-Men after his acclaimed work on the franchise in the 2010s—and artist Tony S. Daniel, who recently made his own return to the world of X in Jed MacKay's X-MEN (2024).

Together, the two X-Men veterans introduce an all-new, all-different kind of X-team as Storm, fresh off her stint with Avengers, recruits a lineup of all-star mutant heroes—including X-Men mainstays and a pair of iconic mutant Avengers—to confront global threats no other team is equipped to deal with, beginning with nothing less than a relentless inter-dimensional invasion! Both creators joined the panel as surprise guests to discuss the new series.

In the wake of the events of AVENGERS: ARMAGEDDON, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes are no more! So who will stand in defense of the Earth? The X-Men will! Storm gathers an elite team for just that task, including Wolverine, Colossus, Bishop, Iceman, Psylocke, Firestar, and Justice! Mutants by birth, heroes by choice! And their first challenge is a full-on invasion from the Negative Zone! Is this Annihilus again—or something far, far worse?

On reuniting with Marvel’s Merry Mutants, Yost shared, “I’ve worked on my fair share of X-Books over the years, but MAXIMUM X-MEN is everything I love about comics rolled into one—it’s underdog heroes saving the world from the biggest Avengers-level threats imaginable, it’s mind-breaking action and drama and everything people expect from X-Men, all with a classic Claremont vibe. Rolling MAXIMUM X-MEN out as part of the new world post-Armageddon only lets us spotlight the need for a story like this… and to top it all off, I get to work with legendary artist Tony Daniel. As a lifelong X-Men fan, it doesn’t get any better!”

“The X-Men have long been my favorite characters since discovering GIANT-SIZE X-MEN (1975) #1 in the fourth grade,” Daniel added. “I’ve always dreamed of working on my favorite characters, so it’s an incredible honor to launch MAXIMUM X-MEN with Chris. I’ve been a fan of Chris’s writing for a long time, but this is our first time joining forces. I’m already in love with the story in the first issue. Its vibe and energy remind me so much of the kind of X-Men stories I loved as a child, and I can’t wait for the audience to see what we have in store.”
