Psylocke has a story with doom way back the 80's when he helped kitty. But again ....

FSaker said...

Doom in Otherworld?... okay, sure. I guess both this issue and the previous one will be short stories, then? Not sure if that's a good idea, but let's wait and see.

Anyway, September will be quite a busy month, with three books getting my attention - and NEITHER of them is Excalibur (*sigh*):

- Magneto vs. the Avengers: please don't let this turn into a sequel for AvX...

- Onslaught's return: did we really need that? What's next, Dark Phoenix? Bastion? Cassandra Nova (...I'd actually LIKE that!)? Then again, it's Si Spurrier writing, and he managed to make both Legion's solo book and the X-Force led by both Cable and Psylocke deliver great stories, so if there's anyone who can salvage Onslaught, it's Spurrier.

- Inferno: the solicitation doesn't really reveal much, does it? But that's a beautiful cover, and it makes me remember how great Kate's Red Queen outfit looks. Thank you, Emma, for finally making her get rid of that generic X-student uniform!

...Storm becoming Queen of Sol looks a great idea, too. But I hope it doesn't mean she'll disappear from other X-books like Betsy did.

randybear said...

Someone wake me when this long nightmare is finally over. The only comic I even buy at this point is Way of X.

Asrar seems bored doing the covers. Cant blame him, you can only draw the same characters posing for so long before the artist kinda exhausts it

Nate X said...

Those solicits make me feel like all of those books are ending... I think the line might be revamped with new launches once Inferno ends.

X-Man said...

I'd be fine with that lol, but what makes you think that way?

I just hope if Doom is their enemy here he doesn't wipe the floor with Betsy. He is very powerful. If they do go head to head i hope Tini can exercise some creativity with their encounter but damn I literallt have zero confidence in her writing at this point. I need to literally expect nothing at this point in order to enjoy this book lol

Nate X said...

I don't buy Storm's new position as Queen Regent of Mars. This move reeks of the X-office having no clue on what to do with Storm, so they just shunted her off to Mars. She'll be limited to cosmic stories now and miss all the relevant X-Men stories back on earth. I don't like it at all.

X-Man said...

I'm so conflicted @Randybear (sidenote: btw I ended up buying DBD because of your stream and now I'm obsessed with it lol), on one hand I really want Betsy out of this book, but on the other, I want to see what she does with a Betsy who supposedly found her confidence back. I mean I still want it to end but I kinda feel like we deserve to see some "payoff" from this horrific journey she felt Betsy needed to go on lol.

randybear said...

haha nice. If you ever wanna play you can add me randybearlovesu

FSaker said...

"I just hope if Doom is their enemy here he doesn't wipe the floor with Betsy. He is very powerful"

He is. But judging from the solicitation, it seems he'll be escorted to Otherworld by Betsy's team, so at least at first he shouldn't have any reason to attack them.

Sure, he can always betray them during the story, but since this is likely a single-issue story rather than a full arc, the Excalibur team would likely defeat him in this case.

And if they don't, well, that won't look good for Howard at all. Now that Betsy is supposed to be over all her self-confidence issues, there's no reason whatsoever for her to fail again.

randybear said...

Even if Betsy had her confidence back does Howard know how to write her as a creative and competent telepath? I havent read XCorp but not sure if shes already done more with Monet's TP over in that book.

FSaker said...

It seems Marvel as a whole is trying to move Betsy away from telepathy (which she has used only for communication, if I remember correctly) and put more emphasis on her telekinesis, as a knight creating her own sword and shield (and whichever other weapons she may create).

I can see the reasons for that (distancing her from her traits as Psylocke and trying to establish her as a more physical fighter, with the armor allowing her to sustain more damage and the TK enhancing her strength - kinda like a 1990s Rogue, but with weapons and an armor). Still, it seems to be a terrible idea.

Tobias Chatti said...

Eww they manify Betsy.

X-Man said...

Well I think that's the Otherworld armor so it'd be bulkier. I'm assuming this because I think the baby is the dragon again.

FSaker said...

Good point. But it's odd that only Betsy and Shogo are in their Otherworld versions, while Gambit, Rictor and Jubes look exactly how they do when they're on Earth.

One cool thing is to see that apparently Meggan joined Excalibur for good (it's the second cover in a row featuring her). And it's curious that she is in the team, but Brian isn't (then again, I assume their trips to Otherworld happen through the Krakoan gate, and since Brian isn't a mutant, maybe he can't use the gate).

Kiki M. Ishola said...

Betsy done dirty again. Pink hair and kettle duds with an ugly face. I feel you Asrar you want Betsy be with her butterfly tho Tini Coward trips ya.

Kiki M. Ishola said...

Betsy hair color misfires to the side the kettle armor is toxic stuff. All x-gurls are pretty and female except Betsy. The gala dress was the first and last time she felt woman. Eyesores keep comin Excalibur cover after cover and interiors.

randybear said...

Theyre all in their 616 outfits its just an error on the artists part.

randybear said...

Yeah the colorist is trolling at this point because I've seen people tweet at him about Betsys hair being purple not pink

randybear said...

Agreed! It kills me that the xwomen look so good but Betsy is stuck in armor and can't only ever wear the union jack colors. It sucks!

randybear said...

Can*.. lol wish there was an edit feature

Kiki M. Ishola said...

They troll hard. Betsy's made a meme the knight Brit meme. She was the yellowface ninja meme so they wanted a change. In the 80s she was normal the period we got to know the real Betsy not a social and ethnic construct.

Jaime Braz said...

I wonder will Doom recognize Betsy from way back they met? I pray the issue will be good although we are talking Howard therefore no.

Jaime Braz said...

Overall Betsy has been trashed on the imagery , power, character and substance level. Howard watered her character so that Betsy is a stranger and confused her powers with the Captain Britain role. The sole living trademark that tells us this is Betsy are the butterfly and purple hair but they try to take them away too.

After the body separation however they cannot give Kwannon the purple hair of Betsy because it is Asian erasure and Kwannon will blatantly be a Betsy substitute from head to toe.

randybear said...

The first rule to enjoying Howard's Excalibur is to have zero expectations.

X-Man said...

@Randybear I will, but just note I am not as good as you. I'm still fairly new lol.

X-Man said...

She telepathically attacked Jamie near the beginning of Excalibur. She also created all those psychic illusions when Kwannon was trying to bring her back and she was resisting. Apocalypse referred to her as one of the most powerful psychic beings, Kwannon said in Fallen Angels that she needed a power boost as she cant do what Xavier or even Betsy can do psychically, and also in the same issue Kwannon tried to bring Betsy back in Excalibur she tells her she knows how psychically powerful Betsy is. Based on those descriptions, Betsy should be an extremely strong telepath. They just suck at writing her as such.

randybear said...

This is very well put. 100% how I feel

Jaime Braz said...

I have been living in denial. I took Tini Howard's talent at face value by reading her interviews showing her deep knowledge of Marvel heroes. I
forgot the directives precede talent. If Betsy must be degraded in favor of the all new different Psylocke then word it is from the writers end.

X-Man said...

@Jaime Braz, I've come to learn that knowing a lot about characters sadly doesn't equal knowing how to write them. I definitely think Howard has some form of talent, but it doesn't fit with our brand of heroes. I think she'd be better with a Fantasy book or something. I'm not that interested in Otherworld/dragons etc etc to keep going back to it.

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/42428980-euthanauts

A scroll down the reviews the readers gave reflect the issues each and every one of us has with Excalibur. The first five issue arc was focused and six to eleven was the build up for an epic. From issue twelve and afterwards it deflated and became terrible full of plot holes and abrupt shifts. Betsy lost her duel to Isca terribly without a fight, she broke and was lost and the restoration arc was a staged TV show with a tiny cheese trap of Betsy using her butterfly and psi knife while possessed by Malice. Brian fluctuated from a plot device to a depressed weakling to a happy Avalon bodyguard of his older brother. Saturnyne who wields tremendous power was afraid of Amenth and needed the aid of the X-Men without much explanation save for the grimoire magic definitions which perplexed the story more. And all the Excalibur members deviate from their regular selves from the main cast to the supporting and guests. The exceptions are Apocalypse and Pete Wisdom that Tini Howard handled well.

randybear said...

Thinking back on Malice im like wtf was the point? I think it was all meta commentary from Howard to the readers. Notice Malice controlled Betsy as if she were in the 90s the ninja with the knife and butterfly, being stealthy... is that commentary we are MALICE.. we want to control and say who Betsy is... Kwannon stops Betsy herself that issue and declares "That is NOT Betsy Braddock" lol Once Malice left Betsys body she immediately went back to the bland ass version Howard created with no butterfly or knife or any mention about it.

I think that was her final say on the matter we won't be going back there.

FSaker said...

One question: many people here complain about Betsy wearing an armor as her current uniform, but wasn't her Outback uniform (which was also an armor) quite popular among Psylocke's fans? Could an armor redesign making it closer to the 1980s version (maybe also turning the current CB cape into a hooded cloak like the one from Outback Betsy) be the solution to please both the fandom and the creative team (Howard, White et al)?

(this question popped up in my head as I'm reading Piskor's "X-Men Grand Design: X-Tinction", which shows Betsy both in the Outback armor and in the Hand ninja bathing suit)

randybear said...

Yes because her armor 80s armor was unique and cool. It was a fitted look with her signature colors and didn't give her the silhouette of a body builder. Plus the superman cape isn't cute compared to her mysterious hood and cloak. Both are armor but vastly different in style.

FSaker said...

Would it be better if her armor was changed to something akin to the 80s armor, then?

That is, except for the colors, since she'll certainly have to keep the red, blue and white colors as long as she continues to be Captain Britain?

FSaker said...

Oh, and I 100% agree, her 80s armor was awesome! I recently read again that arc where Madelyne is taken by the Genoshan regime and the X-Men go to her rescue, and Betsy looks fantastic in every panel she appears!

FSaker said...

Yeah, Kwannon doesn't need the purple hair. Not only that would be bad for Betsy, it would be bad for Kwannon herself, taking away yet another aspect that's part of her own self to replace it with something from Betsy (plus, she actually looks great with black hair).

Back to the armor, I was looking at this blog's costume gallery, and wow, even GREG LAND's rendition of it looks gorgeous: https://1.bp.blogspot.com/--w307dejiIA/YJSifSUT-UI/AAAAAAAALuQ/W2OrQjUDiN49VN3DvJ2OPw3ZYLvKweVbACLcBGAsYHQ/s650/PsylockeLikeAButterfly-Sisterhood.png

I wonder how it would look like recolored with CB's colors. Maybe even adding the Union Jack flag in the torso, kinda like Ginger Spice back in the 1997 Brit Awards days...

randybear said...

Its just lame that Betsy is forever stuck in the flag colors 🙄

randybear said...

Kwannon fans hate Betsy and blame her for everything yet they want all of Betsys iconography. Damn they are greedy 🤣 kwannon has all of Betsys relevance just let Betsy keep what she can... realistically Betsy will never be more popular than Psylocke/Kwannon its just a fact :(

Tobias Chatti said...

Hellions continues Kwanon use the Betsy butterfly. The gala did it again after the murderworld. Betsy got into her body she should be able to use her original powers and not Kwanon. She looks a fake and Betsy a fool.

randybear said...

Kwannon used the butterfly signature in the Hellions gala issue or where? Sorry I dropped Hellions and Excalibur

Tobias Chatti said...

@Randybear Kwanon used the Butterfly to call Scalphunter and second when she killed Betsy over and over and crucified her. In gala she used the Betsy butterfly to make her killer friends see fireworks.

Makes me laugh that people on twitter are like wow Kwannon is so individual because she has black hair. Its a joke. If marvel cared about Kwannon as a genuine character she would have got her own costume and codename. Even her Revanche phase is better than this complete bait and switch cloning.

Wouldnt be so bad if Betsy was being a badass, leading a team, cool new powerset and stories etc. Ugh.

FSaker said...

"Even her Revanche phase is better than this complete bait and switch cloning"

The ironic part is, if Betsy ever loses the CB mantle, I wouldn't be surprised if Marvel decided to give the Revanche identity to HER, just to keep the image of Psylocke as a ninja.

Sometimes, I even like the idea, as it would allow her to return to the purple, pink and black colors (I mean, Revanche's 1990s costume was kinda nice - except for the unnecessary silver straps all over it, and Betsy's Disassembled uniform have a "Revanche-y" feel); other times, it makes me fear that it would reduce her as just another telepath in Krakoa without anything making her unique (we already have Jean as the über-powerful telepath, Emma as the snarky one who can also turn into diamond, Kwannon as the telepath ninja combining psychic powers and fighting skills, and so on)... as Captain Britain, at least she has something over the other telepaths (basically being the one in charge of Otherworld matters, having an entire troop of alternate reality counterparts following her lead and so on). Even if she feels like an Avenger-like character amidst X-Men.

(speaking of the Avengers, Wanda is dead... I guess anyone who celebrated the retcon defining she's not a mutant may be regretting that now)

Tobias Chatti said...

I'm depressed and get more depressed to see Betsy be denied her Psylocke history.

I'm depressed for the Phoenix taken by Echo from Jean like the butterfly and Psylocke from Betsy.

I'm depressed Wanda and Pietro were changed to technology gifted.

I'm depressed for Betsy ragdolled around by shitty writers and artists.

It's the worst time to be a Marvel fan their stories suck and they destroy my favorite characters.

I don't care for Kwannon as long as she poses as Betsy makes me angry to see Betsy pooped.

randybear said...

Yeah I think much like how many now see Psylocke and associate it with Kwannon thats happened with the butterfly.

Oh well at this point I just want a new writer someone who can give us really fun and interesting stories that make sense and the characters aren't all dislikable.

I'll die on this bet that Si Spurrier would kill an Excalibur or Captain Britain book but that will never happen.

FSaker said...

Spurrier would be an amazing choice for Excalibur! He already used several British mutants in an arc of Legion's X-Men Legacy, and later had Cable's and Betsy's X-Force face off against Wisdom's MI-13 team - and in both instances, he did a great job with these British characters.

I'm not sure of how he would handle the fantasy that is part of Excalibur, as Legacy and X-Force were more sci-fi oriented. But other than that, I'd love him to take this book!

I loved his XForce and Legion they were sadly underrated much like I imagine Way of X will be too. I think he would make Betsy very fun and should get a shot at writing her.

But its like the xoffice only wants middle aged women with blue hair and nose piercings to write Betsy

Tomu-Cat said...

I'm now wishing for the alternate reality where Outback armor Betsy had joined Hellions and they could have continued her and Havok's bizarre interactions penned by Zeb Wells. Kwannon could have been character assassinated over in Excalibur by Tini. The irony being Kwannon was about the only character Tini has written well!

I love the ninja iconography of 90s Psylocke, but without Betsy's heroism underneath shes just meh to me. I want Kwannon to exist and be part of the xmen but without a new codename or an identity of her own it just feels like 90s Betsy's corpse is walking around.

I feel crappy for the situation they are both now in tbh.

FSaker said...

"I'm now wishing for the alternate reality where Outback armor Betsy had joined Hellions and they could have continued her and Havok's bizarre interactions penned by Zeb Wells"

That would be cool! Another possibility (if she wasn't Captain Britain) would be to have her replacing Jean in X-Force as the telepath coordinating the communications from Krakoa and occasionally joining the field team in their missions.

Hm, I wonder... Outback armor (with hooded cloak) or Disassembled costume? Or the Disassembled costume UNDERNEATH the Outback armor and hooded cloak (or would that be too much)? There are so many possibilities...

Back to the solicitations, it just occurred to me now: wasn't Doom a huge enemy of Morgan LeFay? I think I remember an entire arc of Dark Avengers involving Morgan going after Doom and the Dark Avengers trying to protect him.

Suddenly his involvement in Excalibur makes much more sense to me. Doom may be despicable, but he could be a valuable ally now that Morgan was freed by Coven Akkaba and plans to go after mutantkind and especially after the Excalibur team... eventually she could go after him again afterwards, so it's better for Betsy's team to join forces with Doom against her.

(and yes, many of you probably figured that out way before I did... I'm kinda slow)

Jaime Braz said...

My vote also goes to the Outback armor. Betsy had a wonderful figure in it.
