Excalibur #21 Spoilers

Spoilers: As Excalibur attend the Hellfire Gala, Rictor is not in the mood for celebrations. Shatterstar surprises Rictor, but the reunion doesn’t go quite as planned. After a while, Rogue is chosen as a member of the new X-Men. Rogue is congratulated by her teammates and thanks Excalibur for their time together. Gambit assures Betsy he’s not leaving Excalibur. Betsy and Jubilee try to comfort Rictor, who’s drowning his sorrows, but they are interrupted by Pete Wisdom. Wisdom asks Betsy to a dance and lets her read his mind. Betsy learns that while she was gone Coven Akkaba took the opportunity to encourage the British people to distrust Captain Britain and dismiss her as a pretender who abandoned them. Wisdom informs that Brousseau is now Britain’s ambassador to the U.N., which makes him Wisdom’s superior. Betsy realizes the High Priest Reuben Brousseau is in attendance and rushes to him. Brousseau formally notifies Xavier and Emma Frost that Britain’s alliance with Krakoa is over, which means that mutants living in Britain will be subject to British law, that the Krakoan gates are no longer welcomed and that all mutant drugs will be returned. Brousseau warns Betsy that Otherworld is not her land as King Arthur is the rightful ruler and that Britain won’t tolerate Excalibur controlling the Lighthouse on British soil. Rictor leaves the Gala outraged by the new developments. Elsewhere, Brian and Meggan small talk at the Gala. When Brian leaves, Nightcrawler takes the chance to flirt a bit with Meggan, and implies that she’s pregnant again. Meggan neither denies or confirms. At the balcony, Betsy is by herself lost in her thoughts when Rachel asks her to a dance. Rachel apologizes for not realizing Malice was possessing her, and Betsy asks her to visit the lighthouse more often. Brousseau leaves the gala and heads back to Coven Akkaba’s meeting house with Wisdom by his side. Brousseau reveals that Coven Akkaba plans to free Morgan le Fay from Jamie’s control. To that end, they ambush Wisdom and murder him, using his blood to channel magic and finally freeing Morgan. Elsewhere, Rictor heads back to the Lighthouse and summons his druids. With their help, Rictor is able to detach a piece of land from Cornwall’s coast and create a small island known as Braddock Isle, with Braddock Lighthouse at its very center. At the same time, Morgan is able to cross the Krakoan gate from Avalon to the Lighthouse. Rictor notices something’s off but is interrupted by Shatterstar again. The former lovers reconcile and reunite.

I tried giving Tini The benefit of the doubt. however; I feel like she baited me into the Excalibar series through her interviews and how well she seem to know Betsy and the world of magic. however her writing just seems to come off more like a really bad teen drama than a story about adults who have complexities and very interesting powers. I don’t know about you but I did not sign up for a comic book version of Riverdale. I just can’t wait until someone else takes over this book and these characters because what she’s doing to these characters is just awful. Her story development is just so slow and uneventful it feels like the whole series is just a bunch of space fillers I just don’t understand how she is writing for marvel I feel her lane is in the young adult sector right your team dramas and leave Betsy and these characters alone.

Write your teen dramas*

Can we just start a petition to get her off this book? because I’m sure I’m not the only person that feels this way. actually I know I’m not the only person that feels this way, because I’ve read a lot of the comments here and I just feel like I’m being cheated out of my money and I’m not getting anything back from my investment. I really feel she’s better off doing something else.

From the spoilers above it sounds like perhaps she is wrapping up her plots, at least i hope!

My worst nightmare would be if after Excalibur finally ends, editorial gives Tini a Captain Britain solo series 😆

So Morgan is free, and eager for revenge. I know she's a villain and all, but I don't blame her after everything that Jamie and Apocalypse did to her... it's just sad that her vengeance will likely be directed at the Excalibur team, who never agreed to the things she suffered (sure, they deposed her from her kingdom in Otherworld, but she's the one who started the war back then), while Jamie and Apocalypse won't be suffering any kind of punishment for what they did.

This Reuben guy, on the other hand... I look forward to see him fall. Maybe after Wisdom get resurrected, he'll "return the favor" for him and his Coven.

And I'm glad that Rogue is finally free from this book! Now, if only her former teammates at Excalibur could be so lucky...

The odd thing is I kinda enjoyed X-Corp and definitely didnt think I would. Also I realized the issues I enjoyed most in this book was when she didnt write magic. Maybe as far as X-Men characters are concerned, she might want to leave the magic behind.

The thing is she’s not a bad writer. what’s frustrating about it is her inconsistency and inability to keep the reader engaged over a series of issues. she barely has the mutants use their powers or combine their powers as a team in a very interesting way. she seems to have her favorite characters that she highlights but as an overall journey it’s just inconsistent and that’s what frustrates me. I actually loved her apocalypse story and I also enjoyed X Corp. it just seems like Her writing of Betsy and Rictor is just off. Rictor was one of my favorite characters in Xfactor but here he is just a sulking melodramatic Emo guy that is suddenly into magic and Betsy as much as I try to give her the benefit of the doubt and was like oh at some point she’s going to connect the dots for Betsy it just seems like she’s just this bratty insecure girl and I just feel confused as to why she’s making these choices. As a reader i trusted her because I was hoping for a payoff but it doesn’t seem like it’s happening. maybe I’m just in my feelings right now because I was rooting for her ( insert tyra bank’s voice lol) But the pace of the character development is really frustrating I’m just venting at the end of the day I’m still gonna keep buying Excalibar because I love Betsy so much and I want to show my support for any book she’s in even if it’s a book that is inconsistent.

Like I said in my other comment above it’s not that I don’t like her as a writer I just don’t like what she’s doing with some of my favorite characters Betsy, jubilee and Rictor. These characters have awesome powers and vibrant personalities they are complex and have a lot of emotional intelligence I don’t feel that in her writing and I just feel maybe I just finally reached my limit making excuses for her inconsistency of character development who knows maybe I’ll put my foot in my mouth once this all ends but the pace is just so painfully Slow.

I'm not saying she's a bad writer either my only experience with her writing is unfortunately Excalibur but I've heard good things about her other works but as far as writing Betsy at this point T9ni has to go she has had more than enough time with Betsy its time for someone else to have a shot at this new iteration of Betsy

This issue was fun. A lot of stuff happened. I've been enjoying this book more post-X of Swords. You all be so biased against Excalibur because of the first issues that you're gonna be nitpicking about everything.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion and no one here is going to attack you for enjoying Excalibur so get over it if not everyone enjoys it as much as you have. Tini has had enough time with Excalibur and Betsy in particular, she should focus on XCorp

Just popping in to say how I much I enjoyed this issue. You know, just to represent the opposition. 😉

"she seems to have her favorite characters that she highlights"

You know what's ironic? I wouldn't be surprised if we found out Betsy IS one of Howard's favorite characters. And maybe THAT could be the problem.

I mean, we all know that Claremont adores Betsy, right? Now, try to remember how he wrote her during the Revolution era, or during the Reload era, or in New Exiles. Those were quite bad times for her in terms of characterization and development.

I guess sometimes, when a writer likes a character, s/he tries to bring some different ideas that just don't work. In Tini's case, that interview about how readers don't understand that a woman can feel like a failure sometimes seems to indicate she's trying to use Betsy to project this perception, and she possibly chose Betsy exactly because she likes the character. The problem is, it's not working.

Maybe it could have worked if this whole journey for Betsy with her repeatedly failing before putting herself together and rising above it all could be nice if it lasted for about two arcs - but TWENTY ISSUES? That's a lot. And it's not as if she got anything else besides her failures during this whole time. In comparison, Si Spurrier's X-Force had Betsy failing (both as a heroine and as a person in control of her own emotions), but not only her journey wasn't dragged out without development, she also had little victories in between her failures, plus good action scenes, good dialogues and all.

It's sad, really, because as many of you pointed out, I also believe the problems in Excalibur have nothing to do with Tini Howard's talent as a writer (in fact, X-Corp is being quite praised among readers, from what I see). I guess we can only hope that by the time this book is over, she'll manage to deliver a huge payoff for everything - sadly, it will come too little, too late.

To be fair, she did have an affair with Cluster before (sure, Cluster was one of Fantomex's brains inhabiting a female body, but still).

I wouldn't mind if she became a couple with Rachel, but the problem is that there was never any prior indication that the two of them were either romantically or sexually attracted to each other. That's why, so far, I consider that scene to represent just two good friends having fun dancing, nothing else.

Howard runs on high octane in X-Corp FSaker. She hates Betsy on the low to write her off character. Revanche is more Betsy than the real deal in Excalibur. I hate that!

Kiki M. Ishola said...

Psi-Girl got dibs on Howard bend her knees for the scissor sister shippers. Nah Betsy has more chemistry with Sabretooth than with toilet brush with both Rachel's and Cluster's heads on it.

Kiki M. Ishola said...

@FSaker I name it a one night stand with a nervous system thingy that's M2F Charlie.

randybear said...

I always viewed her dynamic with Cluster as a pansexual situation... there was no build up or hinting to Betsy being bisexual as opposed to say characters before like Storm Rachel Kitty Magik etc but with Betsy its like Humphries wanted something shocking to happen.

Betsy hated Cluster before she realized it was the good brain. Its bot like Betsy was lasting after her she only realized she was the "right
One" due to the brain not body.

Kiki M. Ishola said...

@randybear Betsy did a Fantomex part that's Cluster. Fantomex and his pieces are humanoids with sentinel tech mixed with mutant dna. Imagine Betsy slept with E.V.A. cause a kooky writer thought it and it's the same mood.
