This may be an unpopular opinion, but... I actually like when Betsy appears wearing the Captain Britain helmet. She looks great in this panel (but who doesn't, when they're drawn by To?).

The contrast between Jubilee being fascinated by the pixies and Doom looking completely unimpressed is quite funny. But I hope his presence here is actually contributing to move the plot forward instead of adding yet another loose thread; this book already has too many of them: Merlin's plans, Morgan's next move, Clan Akkaba persecuting mutants in the United Kingdom, Wisdom recreating STRIKE... Doom used to be a huge enemy of Morgan, so if Tini Howard remembers that, this could actually help to advance (and maybe finish, though I doubt it) Morgan's plot.

I think Dooms presence here is to wrap up the Morgan plot

Howard writes the unlikeablest and uselessnest Betsy. It's past overdue her firing from Excalibur. Never will forgive what's been done to my favorite heroine. Get the boot already.

Gosh the butterflies! Everyone except Betsy can have them real nice pun Tini real nice.

I don't think these are butterflies; they look like pixies (two of them seem to have arms and legs). And I don't think Jubilee is generating them; rather, she seems to be interacting with them.

But yes, I agree that Betsy should already have her psychic butterfly signature back by now.

According to Diamond July sales Hellions outsold Excalibur 😆

Kwannon is slowly overshadowing Betsy. I dont hate Kwannon I just don't want her to eclipse Betsy but thats where it's heading IMO. You'll never in this lifetime see Betsy/Captain Britain chosen for a spot in a video game over Psylocke for example.

That's not surprising; I was reading readers' opinions on the X-Books forum on the Dawn of X era and Excalibur is at the bottom of the ranking of which books they prefer.

Which makes me wonder what will happen to her if there really is a X-line relaunch when Hickman leaves. Excalibur not only has an irregular quality (some issues are quite good, but some are really bad), but it also pushed Betsy away from the X-Men, as she's often busy dealing with Otherworld and rarely interacts with X-Men from other books. It wouldn't surprise me if Marvel decided to have Captain Britain move from Utopia and become part of the larger Marvel universe - commercially, it could be a great move, but I'm mostly interested in the X-Men, so it would be sad to me if she was taken away from the X-line.

And then there's always the risk that no writer will actually be interested in using her after Howard's run is over and she'll be left forgotten in a corner, like what they constantly do to Dazzler... Excalibur's big challenge was to make Betsy's new status interesting, and so far it has failed. The book seems to be improving, but I fear it may be too little, too late. Hopefully it isn't.

Mojo in Jim Lee thong outsells Tinis spoof-calibur. Betsy got even for the stealing seeing Revanche is a 90s Betsy poser in looks and attitude.

This has always been my biggest gripe is how poorly Marvel handled the body split and Betsy new status quo. Not only did they essentially ignore important elements to the body swap plot but the blame has shifted entirely to Betsy with zero context just "Betsy bad" and now she's a super hero with a cumbersome code name thats repetitive as all hell in Marvel comics (we really need ANOTHER Captain? How long before people realize Captain sounds stupid?)

And they're trying to sell Betsy as Captaim Britain and she was self contained to one writer who wrote her incredibly miserable and unlikable, unsecured, useless af... how the hell did Marvel expect her to have a chance?

Yet Kwannon has been the star of her two books (notice they don't mandate women writers for Kwannon?)

Its definitely shoe horned how Kwannon adopted the codename the visuals and costume. No one mad that the Asian character adopted a white woman's entire identity.

To be honest, I do like the idea of turning Betsy into Captain Britain. What bothers me, as you pointed out, is that Captain Britain is supposed to be an important superhero, yet she's been basically isolated in her book. Which isn't a good book.

While Kwannon becoming the 1990s Psylocke does help her popularity, I'd say most of her luck comes from Zeb Wells actually delivering a good book (unlike the mess that Fallen Angels was), plus the fact that she occasionally appears in other books. It's easy to perceive Kwannon as part of the Krakoan society; meanwhile, most readers from other X-books probably don't even remember that Betsy also lives there. She doesn't interact with other X-Men, she doesn't interact with other Marvel superheroes... she barely interacts with her own teammates (in fact, I've seen many fans of Gambit and Jubilee complain that they barely do anything in Excalibur, despite being supposed to be part of the main roster).

I'm sick of her as Captain Britain. Im tired of her being tethered to all the OW lore. She can't do anything now without it involving magic nonsense. I've never been interested to the mystical side of Marvel and Betsy isn't going to change that for me.

@randybear on the tip of my tongue couldn't have said it better.

Though I do like that Betsy is Captain Britain, I have to agree with Randybear that the magic stuff is wearing a bit thin. Excalibur could be more 'Doctor Who' and less 'Dungeons and Dragons'.

I need to see Betsy punch or kick, or something! She should still have Ninja skills and combat skills. She trained for a while. It wasn't just something she stole from Kwannon. That makes me the most frustrated.

randybear said...

Agreed. I wish we could see them visit different realities and go really wild with it but its so boring under Howard.

And agree again about her combat. We literallt never see Betsy do anything cool in combat its literallt her posing during fight scenes holding her sword and shield or just swinging her sword there's zero imagination or creativity put into the fight scenes.
