Love the creepy dolls on the New Mutants cover 😁

FSaker said...

Yes, the creepy dolls look great! But I'm not sure who the doll with the mask (next to Warlock) is supposed to be...

Excalibur looks interesting. I wonder why Arthur will fight Betsy; considering how Merlin imprisoned him and how Excalibur was opposing Merlin, I'd expect Arthur to appreciate that. Unless he's being mind-controlled, or maybe he is the true enemy and Merlin was actually trying to protect the mutants in Otherworld... it's hard to say, since Otherworld characters tend to change their alignments and alliances more often than pro-wrestlers (and that's quite a feat), so who knows if Excalibur can trust anyone from there (Arthur, Merlin, Morgan, Saturnyne... even Jamie isn't trustworthy).

And knowing Hickman will leave after Inferno is over, it's kinda weird to see X-Force and Marauders (maybe Hellions, too) with stories that seem kinda unimportant, judging from these solicitations. I don't know if all X-books will be relaunched in January or if everything will continue just the way it was, but I was expecting all of them to be presenting something meaningful...

@Fsaker, the dolls on either side of Warlock are James and Rahne.

Unfortunately, I am uninterested in Merlin, King Arthur, and all this Otherworld lore. I only like Roma when she is involved in ways like she was during The Fall of The Mutants. And I prefer Saturnyne in doses as an antihero/foil. When this run of Excalibur ends if I am still reading post-Hickman era, I think a nice long break from all this mutant magic will be in order. I keep waiting for how this all ties in with the larger, holistic storyline of House of X/Powers of X? Will there ever be payoff?? Since STRIKE is confirmed is an arm of ORCHIS, will the resurrection of the PSI Unit finally link this book to HoX/PoX? A this point, I need case (not merely a box, but a whole case) of NoDoz!

Rahsaan said...

How in the world does Arthur have anything at all to do with mutant sovereignty/salvation or its annihilation?

FSaker said...

James... you mean Warpath? Thank you for the information! I didn't know he had joined the New Mutants roster (I'm still on issue #12 of the current New Mutants run).

And yes, I hope eventually Excalibur will feel closer to the other X-books. Ironically, I also think the idea of exploring mutant magic is still very underdeveloped, and despite all the pages used to present its concepts, it still feels very complicated to understand.

Rahsaan said...

@FSaker, yes. Warpath.

Regarding Excalibur...

When she brought the PSI-division back, I was like "Okay. Now we may finally be getting somewhere regarding that info page we saw way back years ago in HOX that show STRIKE, SHIELD, and a bunch of other long-lived Marvel organizations as being part of ORCHIS," but now we are shoulder-deep and all this Merlin/Authur stuff and I'm like "What in the sam hill does have to do with anything and is this book pure childhood escapism that has nothing to do with the grand design?" At this point, it feels random as fuck.😅

I even thought previously, "Well, maybe the mutant magic and combinations of complementary powers that Ric and Rogue had that whole conversation about will play into the big picture and tie this mess in." It still has not though, and I'm wondering if it ever will or if this book ever will. It's so tedious and I'm in this weird position as it has so many characters I adore and want to read, so I keep being a dumbass and wasting my money on it. 😅

FSaker said...

True. Sadly, it seems the whole "mutant magic" plot was left forgotten. Oh well.

Anyway, I wonder how the X-line will be without Hickman. It makes me sad that he won't finish his own story like he did in FF and Avengers... some people say that he may return to finish it later, but he never said he would in the interview announcing that he was leaving the X-line. Some people speculate that he wanted to shake things up and move the X-Men to the next part of what he had planned, but some writers and editors didn't allow him to do that. But this may be false, since he seems to be leaving on pretty good terms (and apparently he even helped the other writers to plan what will happen in their books for the next year), and he probably would be VERY upset if someone had really prevented him to do what he planned to do... still, it's sad to watch him leave.

Which is why I hope Betsy will be used somehow in Inferno. We already know that Kwannon will most likely be part of that story, and I'm actually kinda glad for her (I dislike the instances where she whines about Betsy, but other than that she's been a great character in Hellions), but Betsy deserves to be part of it, too.

Rahsaan said...

@FSaker, how far behind us here in the States are you? I don't wanna spoil anything for you regarding Kwannon's arc, but I think you'll be pleased with where she is going regarding the whining.

FSaker said...

Well, X of Swords has just started being published here... I'm considering whether I should buy the XoS issues and read them, or skip them and start reading again after the event is over. I remember the general consensus was that the event's first half was good, but it became pretty bad once the actual tournament starts.

Anyway, it's great to know that the whining will have a pleasing resolution! Thank you for telling that (and don't worry, I don't care about spoilers when it comes to comic books; in fact, one of the main reasons why I keep visiting this blog - other than to talk to you and to all the other people here who also love Betsy - is exactly to read the spoilers about the issues where she appears).

Mahmud Asrar keeps it floating delivering A-bomb covers. His Betsy Psylocke costume is high fashion product. The others won't be missed.

Asrar adds butterflies where he can near Betsy I'm touched. My champion.

Theres no resolution it just stops. Theres no "pay off" Tini was just like "oh Betsy is white so she was just being whiney and needy without her awesome Asian body anymore" the horrible attitude from Betsy finally stopped but at what cost? 20 plus issues of the most unlikable version of Betsy EVER (yes IMO Tini wrote worst Betsy than her crimson dawn years and her New Exiles years) i would take either of those status quos in a heart beat at this point.

The relaunch can't come sooner and my biggest fear (and what will probablt drive me away for good) would be if Excalibur was rebooted with Howard still writing or worse... Leah Williams.

FSaker said...

I wonder if she will still be part of the X-Men when the relaunch comes. Turning Betsy into Captain Britain actually allows her to move away from mutantkind and join titles like the Avengers, the Defenders (where she'd probably fit better than the Avengers), a UK superhero team like Cornell's MI-13 (which had Black Knight, Blade, etc.) or somewhere else (I was going to include the possibility of a solo comic book, but let's face it, Wolverine is the only X-Man nowadays who's capable to keep a solo book running). And the current Excalibur run basically made her more and more distanced from mutantkind.

I'm curious to find out what plans Marvel has for her. Hopefully they won't send her to editorial limbo and forget her there, like what often happens to Dazzler.

With Captain Peggy Carter being introduced in 'What If', the hopes for Betsy to be integrated into the greater Marvel Universe are slim. I don't think Marvel would have two similar heroes running around, especially if they want one of them to be the British version of Captain America.

randybear said...

I'm fine with that. Hopefully Betsy and Brian are introduced as Asian in MCU so we can keep Betsy as Psylocke.

"The Howard run smells like a pile of dogshit and Betsy take the Captain Britain mantle is cow dung. I dare someone to defend this situation with something good try find some excuses."

Well, sadly, she kinda needs the Captain Britain mantle now. Marvel isn't giving her back the Psylocke mantle anytime soon - and let's face it, we all knew there was a big risk that this would happen when she was returned to her own body. Even if Kwannon hadn't returned in the same story, she would eventually be among the mutants resurrected in Krakoa (I'm actually surprised that Thunderbird is still dead). And to Marvel, it's much more interesting commercially to keep Psylocke as the ninja lady everyone recognizes (even if said ninja lady is actually another person rather than the woman that was using this name for decades)...

"Captain Britain" at least is a somewhat established identity in comics; had Betsy gotten a brand new identity (or even taken the Revanche mantle from Kwannon), I'm afraid there would be a huge risk for her to have the same fate as Dazzler (that is, someone who was once a huge character but nowadays is often left forgotten, sometimes for several years until a writer remembers she exists).

Though she still may end up forgotten even as Captain Britain (I mean, Brian used to vanish from comics for years). Hopefully she won't and whoever takes her after Howard leaves will do a better job writing her. It's sad that Howard pushed wrong ideas on Betsy's characterization, because I still think she seems to be a talented writer. At least the book's art always looks gorgeous.

Tobias Chatti said...

@FSaker characters must stay with the names they start. Betsy started as Psylocke and John Proudstar started as Thunderbird.

The Thunderbird name was taken by Neal Shaara and he flopped. The same will happen to Kawnnon taking Psylocke. She isn't Betsy.

What is happening to Betsy from the Captain Britain to the worst writing duo Williams and Howard for Betsy is a living hell. 2018 began with promise for Betsy as Psylocke restored in her own body and ended crapily with HoX and pox.

FSaker said...

@Tobias Chatti, to be fair, Thunderbird's situation is very different; Neal had no similarities to John Proudstar at all (different physical appearance, different personality, different powers), while Kwannon is basically the living return of the 1990s Psylocke (if a reader who was absent from comics for the past two or three years gets any recent issue where she's only mentioned as Psylocke, they will probably think this is Betsy). Plus, Kwannon returned in a major era for the X-Men and got lucky enough to be in a very interesting book, while Neal was being written by Claremont in quite bad stories (I mean, X-Treme X-Men had Larroca delivering amazing art, but Claremont's writing was really bad - and then he dumped Thunderbird halfway, alongside the book's own premise about the search for Destiny's diaries, and never looked back).

And when you say characters must stay with the names they start, well, Betsy was Captain Britain before becoming Psylocke (even though it was only for a couple of issues)...

That said, I would love her to become Psylocke again; I think everyone here would. But I don't think Marvel will take the mantle from Kwannon anytime soon (especially now that they had all this talk about white people privileges and basically gave readers ammunition to accuse them of throwing an Asian woman under the bus to push a white woman if they ever return the Psylocke mantle to Betsy), so at least for now, what we can realistically hope is that her new Captain Britain mantle gets a better treatment next year than it did in Howard's hands. Hopefully whoever writes Betsy after Howard leaves her will do a good job writing her.

(and hopefully To will continue to draw her - it may be awful to read Betsy nowadays, but at least it's very pleasing to look at her)

Tobias Chatti said...

@FSaker who is to blame for Betsy being copied by Kawnnon? Use Kawnon like a replacement for ninja Betsy is times worst than run over her with a bus.

I don't care for Kwanon because Betsy is my hero. I don't see future with Betsy keeping the Captain part. She sticks like a sore thumb in the X-Men and her habitat is the mutants not magic and England.

Betsy became a popular hero under Psylocke and then some more with her Asian makeover and naked uniform. Captain Britain was the worst to happen then and now to Betsy.
