Rosenberg wrote Shogo out after Dissemabled but before HoX/PoX he wrote it to where Karma had adopted him along with her other younger siblings but Tini wanted Shogo i guess 🙄

There's no way of getting rid of Shogo at this point without making Jubilee look like a garbase person. Poor her.

I love Shogo, and I don't think he's a problem. The problem is the way most writers picture Jubilee and him, as if she was suddenly a mother and nothing else. She could leave him with one of the New X-Men babysitting him while Excalibur is on mission - reducing Shogo's panel time would actually make the times when she was shown with him all the more special.

Jubilee and Shogo aren't the only characters with this problem in Excalibur, by the way. Rogue and Gambit, for instance, are basically shown as little more than Gambit's wife and Rogue's husband, respectively; aside for Rogue's coma in the first arc, I don't think any of them had any memorable moment that didn't involve their situation as a couple. In that regard, Rogue leaving the team may be a great thing, as Tini Howard will have to find a way to write Gambit without using Rogue as a crutch.

I'm annoyed with how To isn't drawing the butterflies in every panel Betsy is in... draw those damn butterflies 😡🤬😅🤣

Well, Rogue will likely get some development in the new X-Men book - and judging from the uniform she'll be wearing there, she may actually return to her sassy Southern belle personality everyone loved back in the 1990s. Gambit is the one we should worry about, since Howard often portrays him as whiny, moody and uncooperative (basically everything he was NOT during his heydays also in the 1990s).

Rictor seems to be the only one in Excalibur getting proper character development; I'm not sure if I like his personality (he also broods a lot), but at least he has the plot about mutant magic. As for Betsy, now that TWENTY issues have been released and she had an entire arc just to deal with her body issues and Kwannon, I hope she finally becomes the confident and competent leader she should have been from the very beginning...

I agree about Ric he is not pleasant. Im not familiar with him outside or PADs last stint on XFactor and he was depowered during that era so any broody behavior could be blamed on that.

But either way this book is severely missing comic relief. There's nothing charming about this book. Defenders can say all day it's good but the original Excalibur is unmatched in its charm and tone. Tinis Excalibur is literally a glorified fanfiction ugh

@randy, I am so weak. LMAO! It's like when you give notice at a job you hate and are on cloud nine.

That's not Gambit. Rogue doesn't have her ring on! Unless the newly weds are roleplaying lol

100% artist forgot such a small detail as a wedding ring.

Last moments as a team before Rogue breaks free. They had a semblance of family if you take out Rictor who was new.

Rogue is saved from the dumpster fire Howard made Excalibur. I'm more angry with Howard because she writes good and she isn't trying with Excalibur she does the opposite.

FSaker said...

@Tobias Chatti, that's true!

In fact, I realized these days that her situation with Excalibur feels very similar with Peter Milligan's run with the X-Men. Milligan is also a good writer (to me, X-Statix is still one of the most brilliant X-books ever made), but his run with the X-Men was a disaster. And for the exact same reasons that we come to dislike Howard's Excalibur: in both situations, the characters are unlikeable and incompetent, they spend more time bickering and whining than working together, and it doesn't feel like they WANT to be part of the team...

In Howard's defense, at least Excalibur has a purpose and a story, while Milligan's X-Men had no direction whatsoever. Still, Milligan's X-Men was possibly the lowest point from any X-book, so the mere fact that Excalibur brings me similar vibes is definitely NOT a good sign.

Exactly 😂

I think Chuck Austin's run was worse mostly because it was much longer than Milligans and ran across a few titles

FSaker said...

True, Austen's run was awful as well; I wouldn't know whether it was better or worse than Milligan's since both sorta blended into a really bad story, with Milligan keeping everything that was wrong with Austen's run.

Then again, I'm not sure if I ever enjoyed anything Austen wrote, which is why my comparison was with Milligan. I don't think Tini Howard is a bad writer at all; in fact, I'm very eager for her upcoming X-Corp book. I just think Excalibur may have been the wrong book for her... sure, she has lots of ideas for mutant magic, but if that's all she wants to explore, it would be better to have a team with mystical mutants (like Pixie, Magik, Selene etc.) from the beginning, not a team of mutants more used to physical brawling - ESPECIALLY when these mutants are fan-favorites like Betsy, Rogue, Gambit and Jubilee. It's a completely different feeling from, say, Spurrier's X-Force, which was a very low-profile book, yet I could feel he actually enjoyed writing each of the characters in it, rather than focusing on one and leaving everyone else like filler material.

randybear said...

Spurrier given a Betsy solo or Excalibur reboot would be fantastic. He is so creative and wild and English lol but he's a man so I think he doesn't qualify since Betsy has been stick with the hipster girl writers since AoX ugh

FSaker said...

What about G.Willow Wilson, then? Her arc in the X-Men (a.k.a. X-Women) book with Storm, Betsy, Rachel and Monet was very good.

randybear said...

Was it? It wasn't bad but it wasn't enough for me to have an impact.

I think Vita Ayala could be good she does a great job of capturing the characters voices shes written. I had my doubts but she had proven to be a decent writer

The title won't fly with keeping the same writer. Look this is the second monthly skip! FFS! It's either new writer or axe. The company sees Rogue was wasted on the book and in short time the same will happen to Betsy, Gambit and the rest. Betsy is cringe awfulness in Brian's garb there's a reason Slaymaster did Betsy a favor to send her to the X-Men and take off the Captain duds.
