Marvel Comics announced this morning that "Uncanny X-Men" #544 publication in October will mark the end of the long-running series, due in large part to the events unfolding in "X-Men: Schism."
"Uncanny" editor Nick Lowe told the Associated Press, "The X-Men are getting torn apart from within. The events of 'Schism' do more damage to the X-Men than any villain has ever done." The sentiment was echoed by current series writer Kieron Gillen who called the end of the series a necessity, though "it's not taken lightly."
Jason Aaron, writer of "X-Men: Schism," explained that while his miniseries may detail exactly why the team breaks up and "Uncanny" ends, the actual team dissolution has been a long time in coming. "It's obvious that things are coming to a head between [Cyclops and Wolverine]...Whether you're a long time X-Men fan or a new X-Men fan, you can pick out and understand the nature of this conflict and how it breaks apart the two lynchpin guys of the X-Men."
"All things must come an end…even for the X-Men, and this October fans will bear witness the end of an era as Uncanny X-Men #544 concludes the long running series. It’s all come to this! Years in the making, the seeds of dissent finally bear fruit as the events of X-Men Schism tear the X-Men and the Marvel Universe apart! When the dust settles, the state of mutantkind will irreparably be changed forever. Don’t miss the historic final issue of the longest running X-Men title this October, in Uncanny X-Men #544!"

the last issue of one of the most significant comic books ever will be drawn by Greg Land? ::face palm::
Yeah, that's exactly what I thought.
As the last issue of one of the most iconic comic books in Marvel's history (and in the overall comics history), the final issue should have some of the most important writers (Stan Lee, Chris Claremont) and artists (Silvestri, Lee, Davis) working in it. Or at least a good writer + artist team.
I have no problems with Kieron Gillen, in fact he proved himself as a good writer for the X-Men. But GREG LAND doing the art? Damn, maybe it's a good thing that Uncanny is ending, after all...
Well I'm sure Greg is busy going through some Maxim magazines looking for fresh images to trace.
I would so love if Alan Davis, Jim Lee or Marc Siilvestri drew this! I hope that Greg Land never touches the X-Men again! And that goes double for Matt Fraction!
quote Rahsaan... no more Fraction
agreed about land :( it feels a bit disrespectful.dont get me wrong,im one of the people that dosent actually even have a problem with his art,but its not right for the final issue.this is kinda sad,im just thinking back over all the uncanny issues, and all the historic moments. To me,uncanny,no matter its high and low points was ALWAYS the parent x-title. sad :(
Well, at least Gillen will be writing it, so I guess this issue won't be too bad...
Since we're in a Psylocke blog, this should be asked: do you think Betsy will be in this last UXM issue somehow? When we think of it, she has been one of the X-Men who appeared the most in Uncanny (Claremont used her a lot in the 1980s, then he brought her back to Uncanny during the Reload era, and as much as we hate Fraction's work in Uncanny, he's used Psylocke quite a lot with the Sisterhood/time-travel/Utopia/Dr. Takiguchi's death/Emma's psychic rescue/Lobe's team stories... she definitely deserves not only to appear in it, but to have a more prominent role in it.
Truth be told I think the issue will just be all about Scott with some screen time with the Original X-Men (in flashbacks).
FSaker,
"As you wish."
Gosh, the moment she started to say "as you wish" to Scott like a servant was so sad...
Yeah, she has practically no chances of getting featured in the last UXM issue (Gillen already said that since Betsy is in Uncanny X-Force, he wouldn't use her much in his title). But I still think she should, given her story in UXM. Damn, that's the title in which she became Asian and debuted her eternal blue bathing suit...
You have an informative blog. I’ve learned something from it. I do have mine too www.claire-fernandez.blogspot.com... thanks
Marvel solicitations for September are out!: http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=32779
And Uncanny X-Force's solicitation is worrying me: it says that Wolverine is incinerated and only Fantomex and Deadpool can defeat Archangel... that means that something will happen to Betsy (as the solicit says there are only two UXF members standing). Gosh, I hope she doesn't die AGAIN...
