Excalibur #6 Spoilers

Spoilers: At the Hatchery, Professor X welcomes Apocalypse back to life. As a member of the Quiet Council, he is granted an advanced position in Krakoa’s resurrection queue. Also present is Jamie Braddock who is seemingly allied with Apocalypse.

Back at Otherworld, in the middle of the war between Morgan Le Fay and the White Witch, Excalibur joins the forces against Morgan’s army. Apocalypse returns to Otherworld and proposes a duel to death between his champion, Betsy, and Morgan’s Champion, Brian, for the fate of Otherworld. After a brief chat with Rogue, and considering her options, Betsy accepts to duel with Brian. Apocalypse warns Jubilee to stay sharp and let Shogo loose on his mark. As both Captains Britain start dueling, Betsy decides to lay down her sword, refusing to kill Brian. Jamie Braddock reappears in Otherworld’s throne and seemingly has a hand in making Betsy pass a sword through Brian’s body, killing him. At that moment, Apocalypse orders Shogo to spit fire at Morgan’s soldiers. Apocalypse declares Jamie Braddock the new king of Avalon and permits Mogan to live in exile. Betsy orders Jamie to resurrect Brian as soon as possible, which he does. Brian wakes up shocked to see Jamie back to life.

Afterwards, in Krakoa, Rogue and Gambit stay the night together, where she reveals she is again in control of her powers. Rogue also says she is not thinking of having children anytime soon. Betsy returns to Braddock Manor in hopes to bring Brian to Krakoa and celebrate. Brian reveals that Morgan’s spell has killed the part of him that chose the Amulet of Right. Instead, Merlyn and Roma came to him in his dreams, and he has taken the Sword of Might in its place, which grants him gifts and abilities. Brian asks Betsy to lock the sword away for both their safety.

Meanwhile, in Otherworld, Jamie Braddock finds Apocalypse experimenting on Morgan Le Fay’s body, however she remains very much alive.

So, possibly an edgier/darker Brian in the future under Howard or another writer? I got Alien Covenant vibes at the end with Apocalypse experimenting on Morgans' body. Jamie on the throne hopefully won't be too much of a problem. It would be too easy to write him still a crazy villain, even after his cloning. I was hoping the throne would go to Brian has a natural evolution for his character.

Jamie become the Otherworld King was a shock. Bad news for all magic creatures and the humans. As much as I liked Brian to be the King of Otherworld he is the best Captain Britain. Brian with the Sword of Might and Betsy with the Amulet of Right are the Yin and Yang inner opposites to each other's pacifism and belligerence.

The Captain Britain Corps is made of Captains from across the multiverse. Earth 616 is special due to its split artifacts so there we have the twins. Old Captain Brian fans stay happy and Captain Betsy fans are too. Although Betsy as Psylocke makes more sense with the X-Men.

Apocalypse competes against Jamie for the worst villain on the same book and I am interested to see how this blows up.

This issue was trash. Lazy using Jamie as a plot device also Betsy took out Brian like nothing but earlier in the series she couldnt even touch him.

And Xavier was perfectly fine with the resurrection of Apocalypse considering it used it to further his own goals.

Everyone one Twitter nutting themselves over this issue as if they've never read a comic book in their life lol The pacing of this series has been so slow and it seemed like everything was rushed in this issue it packed.

@randybear I have not read it yet, but are you talking about when she fought him earlier in the series before she became Captain Britain? If so, that might explain why she would be able to take him out now vs then.

randybear said...

No I'm talking about when they found him in Otherworld and Shogo had to step in to save her ass.

Oh I'll have to see if I can reread it. I lost some of my comics I purchased recently and still havent located them which is really irritating me lol.

Betsy was ambushed the first time as Psylocke. The second time she was Captain Britain was afraid to harm Brian. It wasn't explained she change her mind for the death battle?

What is the meaning of nutting? Is it good or bad?

randybear said...

Lmao Tobias sorry to soil your innocent mind.

Nutting as in the issue filled them with pleasure. I'm exaggerating of course just stating that everyone was just over the top praising the issue.

Seriously the last time I gushed that much genuinely over writing in a comic book was Remender's Uncanny XForce.

This was a good issue. Marcus To continues to be a fantastic match with Tini Howard and Excalibur as a whole. I am so confused about Rogue now. So can she touch people now? How come Gambit is not getting shocked and zapped?

I think Rictor is unnecessary on this team. He doesn't add anything to the team except another male character slot. He has little to no history with any of the other characters. A better choice would have been Nightcrawler or Pete Wisdom.

randybear said...

That's the kind of stuff I'm talking about. Tini just jumps from plot to plot with no explanation.

I get people like this but this book is nowhere near perfect the art is it's saving grace IMO.

Honestly if this title didnt have Betsy or the Braddocks in it I would have zero interest in it. Tini did initially pitch this title and this team MINUS Betsy. It was Jordan White and Hickman who suggested Tini include Betsy. Which baffles me I'm sure there are a slew of writers who would have loved to have taken Betsy to this next level instead we have someone who would rather write Apocalypse and Rictor 🙄

I understand what you said thanks. You meant they are crazy like squirrels eat nuts. Many people on Twitter like Excalibur? On other platforms they don't like it so.

The writing is skippy and people forget what happened before. All the X-Men comics are like that Excalibur is not the only.

Tobias Chatti said...

Pete Wisdom was in some issues and Nightcrawler must come back to Excalibur. He isn't in other books and he doesn't sell good in solos.

randybear said...

The other books are "skippy" ? I see what you're saying but that's more transparent we know that titles like New Mutants and XMen have multiple story lines occurring my point is here its "skippy" in a very disjointed manner. We jump from characters and plots but things advance with no explanation its sloppy and lazy.

And if you knew what I was saying then why ask? 🙄

What a horrible unreadable mess.

Another gripe I have is how Tini doesnt utilize Betsy's telepathy at all. She communicated like maybe 2-3 times telepathically with her team but we havent seen anything beyond that. I dont count her weapons as they're TK energy not telepathic.

I wish we could see the interesting dynamic of a Captain Britain that's also a powerful telepath but Tini doesnt seem interested or creative enough to figure out how to implement Betsy's TP in the story.

I'm dying for a real creative force to take over Betsy.

@randybear more important is to see Betsy use her S.T.R.I.K.E. training. It wouldn't hurt for the psionic weapons to be used in unorthodox ways since Betsy is a strategist on par with Cyclops and Storm (Cable zombies variant acknowledged that).

randybear said...

Jaime IMO the STRIKE training is cool but her telepathy is more important other than her purple hair it's the last remaining staple of the character shes desperately clutching onto.

Jaime Braz said...

@randybear you make many points. Betsy's release from the Asian body cost her many traits that made up her original Psylocke identity. Namely her limited precognition, her butterfly astral form, her telepathy and her calm spirit.

Don't get me wrong but the idea of Betsy debut in the MCU as a S.T.R.I.K.E. agent who is a super model for cover is appealing. It resonates with Betsy's personality that loves fighting action. Her spy identity can tie many loose ends of the X-Men history like Sage who was the first X-Man recruited by Xavier to infiltrate the Hellfire Club, the Dark Phoenix Saga, the Proteus-Moira introduction through the S.T.R.I.K.E. or MI-13 agencies, Apocalypse as member of the Hellfire Club and Mr. Sinister's origins in the UK.
