NYCC 2023: The Rise and Fall of the X-Men's Krakoa Age Revealed

Marvel.com: In 2019, fans witnessed the dawn of the Krakoan Age in Jonathan Hickman’s groundbreaking HOUSE OF X and POWERS OF X, two interconnected five-issue limited series that spanned mutant history and future. Now, the Krakoan Age ends in the same dramatic fashion in FALL OF THE HOUSE OF X and RISE OF THE POWERS OF X. Each delivering half of the story that will bring the Krakoan Age to its conclusion, the pair of series will feature the X-Men of today and the X-Men of tomorrow as they wage the final war against extinction across their entire existence! Evolution is inevitable. Extinction is optional!

The two series are fittingly crafted by some of the Krakoa’s defining architects, writer Gerry Duggan (X-MEN, MARAUDERS) and artist Lucas Werneck (IMMORTAL X-MEN) delivering FALL OF THE HOUSE OF X and writer Kieron Gillen (IMMORTAL X-MEN) and artist R.B. Silva (POWERS OF X) delivering RISE OF THE POWER OF X, plus covers by HOUSE OF X superstar artist Pepe Larraz

I miss this look for Rogue.

This is the third layout like this they've had Brooks do and it's always filled with random characters from different eras and has barely any of it hinted at anything that happened. I think people are going overboard seeing Betsy as Lady Mandarin.

Also people are attacking Brooks for drawing Storm with straight hair here 🙄

Yes, I thought to the same when I saw this picture.

Mixia said...

Exactly, I'm sure we will see no Lady Mandarin costume in the actual comics next year. Besides, are black characters not allowed to have straight hair now?

I wish it was Outback Betsy... it feels like Kwannon from the past and present.

I don’t mind Ororo having straight hair in this 90s depiction. I do Prefer her with tightly coiled hair as she’s now portrayed more frequently as her previous look was rooted in Eurocentric palatability. If Brooks had drawn the current redesign with straight hair, I could see why people would contest. I understand why they contest with this image though because for decades Storm was drawn in a way the glorified Eurocentricity. I think a bigger problem is when current artists ignore Dautermann’s on-point redesign.

Rahsaan said...

And real talk… Ororo does not strike me as a character who would relax her hair. Just sayin’. Lol.

Choosing Lady Mandarin for this art is quite a... peculiar choice. Then again, it also has Outback Rogue, Outback Dazzler, Kid Cable, Kid Cannonball, 1990s Storm, Hound Rachel... so yeah, it's hardly any indication of Betsy becoming Lady Mandarin (especially considering that Steve Foxe already mentioned her as Captain Britain).

If anything, this could either indicate that the two new miniseries will show some kind of alternate timeline/future where Betsy continued to be Lady Mandarin (and didn't return to her original body, as she looks exactly like Kwannon does in this same art), or that these stories may revisit some moments from the X-Men's past and maybe reveal some new information about them (or indicate that these past moments will have some impact in the present). Or, as some people here already said, maybe it won't have any meaning at all and it's just a homage from Mark Brooks to different moments from the X-Men's history.

As for Ororo's hair, she was shown with straight/wavy hair in the 1990s and she is shown here with the 1990s uniform, so it's an understandable choice. I do think that she would look much better with the hair Dautermann gave her in her redesign, though.

@Rahsaan I am sure that Ororo wouldn't mind a silk press, but definitely would object to a chemical relaxer lol

Rahsaan said...

@Alexis, touché! You are right! She would do that!

Never the creamy crack though.

Betsy erasure alert🚨

Revanche steals the last Betsy thing standing Lady Mandarin. And she's Japanese 🤣

Butterfly stolen
TK stolen
Telepathy stolen
Suit stolen
Purple Hair stolen
Psylocke stolen
TK weapons stolen

Wait there's Crimson Dawn still for Kankan to steal.

Rahsaan said...

@Kiki, thank you for the reminder that in Lady Mandarin was supposed to be Chinese! So the whole creation of Kwannon totally wqs off in assigned ethnicity. 😆

Fabian Nicieza is filthy bogus. Worse than Brian Edward Hill with his Kill Bill mommy revenge spin. Revanche Kwankwan whatever she is called was soiled in creation.

When was the last time Betsy was this under utilized? Was it during the time she was dead after Xtreme? Lol

"When was the last time Betsy was this under utilized? Was it during the time she was dead after Xtreme?"

Possibly, yes. Those were tough times, with writers being forbidden from resurrecting dead characters... there was a point-and-click game at Newgrounds based on Morrison's New X-Men run that even made fun of her death (and Warren not being over her).

There was also the gap between the end of New Exiles and Betsy's reappearance in Fraction's UXM, but I think it was shorter.

Honestly, Psylocke (the real one)'s time as Captain Britain has been so awful I'd rather see her Lady Mandarin anyday.

ChunkyMonkey said...

Damn, not y'all got your complaining hats on already. Foxe has already shown he's a better writer than Howard and there's nothing for her to do as disassembled Psylocke aside from being girl #65437 on the team.

Regardless, excited to see what he does for Betsy. Hopefully the loud whining fans don't ruin the fun again and get her shunted to limbo again because they're still living in 2019.

Just remembering that if that change was suposed because The mandarim gangs would not obey a caucasian, much Less they would a japanese....

Rahsaan said...

@ChunkyMonkey, I am hopeful about Steve Foxe. Or I should say cautiously optimistic as I was super stoked about Tini’s Excalibur run and Bets reclaiming the Cap Brit title and then over time I had to admit that was a wash. I’m crossing my fingers for Foxe. If he finds a way to make me love Bets as the Captain, I’ll be extremely grateful. I am hoping we see a sleeker uniform and some awesome usage of her diverse telepathy/telekinesis skills and her hand to hand combat skills. And most of all writing that doesn’t insult long-time fans’ intelligence. 💜

To each their own, but if a character is written badly on multiple fronts, then people should be voicing their displeasure to attempt any change. Why would we be clamoring for more of the same?

Otherwise she already is in limbo of sorts whether she actually is currently in a comic or not.

Betsy doesn't have to be Dissasembled Psylocke to be written well, she doesn't have to be in 2019 to be written well, what she does need though, is to be written with her true personality, not be victim blamed for a body swap she had totally no part in and actually ironically resulted in the resurrection of the character who harbored resentment towards her, needs to not be isolated from the rest of the team when they were building a whole new nation, and basically not steal a mantle from her brother when there could have been so many better ways for her to receive it, or even better, she should imho have gotten the new role he received and made it her own, just like she had made Psylocke her own.

Like @Rahsaan said, I was also somewhat optimistic because Howard knew so much of Betsy's history, but imho in the end her constant obsession with Otherworld and magic (and D&D structured writing) and continually pushing Betsy into those stories resulted in Betsy being in limbo, because those books didn't sell well (and Betsy isn't Doctor Strange).

Saying she wanted to actually write Apocalypse and kinda had Betsy thrown at her in addition to again not writing Betsy with her correct attitude or personality also didn't help.

I said it before, but to me that is like writing Storm suddenly with Rogue's personality and then fans not loving it and then saying we should just be grateful to see Storm, but it isn't really Storm & that wasn't really Betsy in a lot of our eyes and that at the core was the problem. So again it was like she already was in limbo.

I think a lot of us aren't really complaining about the new writer, but the fact she'll still be CB, as Howard (who with all due respect, even you basically said wasn't the best writer yourself) kinda soiled Betsy being in that role for a lot of us.

Imo the current fan-fiction of Betsy is ten times better. They got her personality down, used her past as a stealth agent. Talked about CB, and used Betsy's telepathic abilities creatively, and kept Betsy a bada$$ without it being 2019 lol and definitely better imho than Howard did in her entire run with Betsy.

I am hopeful this new writer will do her some better justice, let us see, I am crossings fingers.

Agree 100 percent, especially the last sentence @Rahsaan.

Betsy was off the books from 2001 to 2005 & the only reason she came back was because CC wanted to tell a Captain Britain story with Betsy & Rachel as a duo.

People love to hate on THs writing but she rehabbed an entire corner of Marvel that is still being utilized across multiple titles today. Tini went back and fortified Betsy’s lost & forgotten lore for new readers to discover & fall in love with. Betsy & the Braddock family are in a far better place moving forward than they where before the Krakoa era started.. and we barely scratched the surface.

There is a difference between being constructive with your criticism & , but what’s not always the case here. Lots of bullying & gatekeeping of a character. As if your take on Betsy is the only one that can exist & what you don’t like is a wash. Then run off anyone who disagrees. I can already tell by the way some accounts have attacked Foxe that it’s just going to be more of the same over here… & that’s too bad because you’re ultimately going to hurt the character further.

Of all the dumbest takes I've read on this blog's comment section, this one deserves a gold medal.

@House of Braddock, thanks for your reply. If you’re addressing my comment where I said things were a wash, I do stand by that from a sales perspective. I will capitulate that other writers are using Otherworld, which has given it a new focus, but I stand by the sales numbers showing that many fans either disliked or were apathetic to the direction Bets was taken in. I even had some new readers telling me that the Captain Britain books were really unenjoyable to them. That being said, I always treat creators with respect. I don’t attack them online (I hated all of the misogyny I often saw people using in their responses to Howard), but I don’t think anyone in this industry is above criticism. I am open to Foxe’s take on these characters, and as I did with Howard, I will give him at least a year to prove interesting to me. I actually gave Excalibur all 25 issues before concluding resolutely that I disliked it. And then I still indulged in all 5 issues of Knights of 10, and initially praised it for being better than its predecessor until some of the lazier writing traits I saw in Excalibur started to resurface.

I am cautiously optimistic about what Foxe will bring. If his writing is unenjoyable to me though, I will voice that.

@PoetryinMotion. 100% with you there. It reads like petulant nonsense. And Captain Britain and Otherworld were FAR more interesting and in a better place under Remender.
