X-Men Monday #155 – Tini Howard Discusses ‘Knights of X #1’

AiPT!: Writer Tini Howard has returned to X-Men Monday to answer your questions about the latest Destiny of X debut.

AIPT: What powers Betsy Braddock has as Captain Britain — in addition to her own mutant abilities. We haven’t seen her with super-strength yet, for instance.

Tini: Sure! So, if you’re a tabletop RPG person, like if you play games with dice and dragons and maybe a dungeon or two, I’ll use that to explain. The term used in gaming sometimes is splat, which is like a job class, prestige class, basically like an extra job for your character that you would, theoretically ‘lay overtop’ your existing character sheet. Splat.

So let’s say Betsy’s our character — she has inherent psychic powers, no one can take that from her. But in her role as Captain Britain, she gets additional abilities, and those are more or less the ones Brian was afforded — flight, etc. I think her strength is certainly enhanced — she runs around in armor and carries a shield, she’s much more physical in this role than she has been previously, so instead of Hulk-like-strength, it manifests more through a general improvement in her physicality. I think even the strongest average humans would tire out long before her in her Captain Britain mode.

Love the idea that the CB suit enhances her stamina and mobility as opposed to, as Howard put it , Hulk like strength.

Yeah, it's nice to know that the suit enhances her stamina and mobility!

The flight ability doesn't really add much, as she was already able to fly with her telekinesis. Then again, I guess using the suit's flight rather than her TK doesn't wear her off, which is a good thing.

And Swan Betsy is a great idea! While this book is focused on the X-Men following Betsy in Otherworld (as it should be), hopefully the alternate Captains Britain will also join them throughout the issues (even if just for a battle or two, then go somewhere else).

I think her TP may have increased and TK decreased (not officially stated, just based on observations). I think she can kinda "float" with her tk, but I remember in Dissasembled when she went to take Storm down, she needed Warren to fly her up to Storm. I rather the CB suit enhance her physicality too, so that's good to hear, but some of the answers were weird lol. Like Betsy isn't really carrying a shield now lol & she wore the Outback armor before. Her having armor in combat isn't that new lol. In any case, I am very glad to hear that she won't be a brute force character :)

Knights of X is Tini Howard get the grip of the title. Betsy has the butterfly in the pages and two old Excalibur heroes are here. I like it and will give it a try.

Yes, the shield part was weird; her "shield" is generated by her TK.

But the part about the armor is kinda justified; from what I remember, several characters (including Betsy herself) stated on panel that the Outback armor didn't really feel like armor. It protected her body like a normal armor would, but it felt light and comfortable as if it was just a regular uniform. That CB armor she had in Excalibur was probably much heavier, even in its form-fitting Earth version (let alone the bulkier one for Otherworld).

Maybe. I just assumed a magical outfit would also be light lol.

Good point.

Oh well, she's not wearing the armor anymore, anyway (unless her current costume is supposed to be an armor... is it? Whatever it is, it looks great!).

AIPT: Thanks for clarifying! Now X-Fan Mark said Rachel is on fire (literally). Does her new look and ability to use fire have a deeper meaning?

Tini: It does, and we’ll see some of that unfold as the story goes on. But the initial concept came from this idea — if Otherworld sort of sees all versions of you, and you’ve been a Phoenix host, well. That might leave more than a bit of magical residue on you. I don’t want to say much more than that — because doesn’t she look amazing? Her hair. God, I love Rachel. Thank you, Bob.

Me: Is Tini retconning established canon of there only being one Rachel in the multiverse or am I misreading her reply? Re: Uncanny X-Men #462

Also, I really dug this first issue. Props to Tini for bringing it! If the book stays this interesting, I think I'll choose to forget Tini's Excalibur.

Wait so she doesn’t have 95 class strength? What’s the point then?!! Brian as Cap Britain had flight, strength, super speed, super reflexes, super stamina, invulnerability (sometimes) and Betsy just has flight and super endurance. What a swizz!!! Give her proper Cap Britain powers or don’t bother giving her the title.

To be fair, she doesn't really need super strength with her TK. Giving too many superpowers to a character will usually make them boring to read, and it makes these powers feel useless whenever the character is defeated by someone else.

@FSaker Betsy needs her Psylocke back I like her when she uses her tk sword and shield. The Captain Britain powers reduce the danger and make her Superman like
