The X-Men Enter 'Destiny of X'

Marvel.com: Rising out of the ashes of Inferno and emerging out of the vital time-travelling mission in X Lives of Wolverine/X Deaths of Wolverine comes The Second Krakoan Age of X-Men: Destiny of X! Mutantkind’s future is reshaped once more, as Krakoa’s greatest triumphs and most crushing challenges still lie ahead. As last week’s Choose Your Destiny teasers showed, the possibilities are endless!

This new era will kick off with new titles such as Immortal X-Men, Knights of X, Legion of X, and X-Men Red, a stellar new creative team takeover on Marauders, and revolutionary status quo changes for continuing titles X-Men, X-Force, New Mutants, and Wolverine.

Fans can get their first peek at what’s to come in a new promotional image by Leini Francis Yu and Sunny Gho, an epic group shot starring some of the major players of the franchise’s upcoming sagas!

“The journey of the Krakoan Age is far from over!” Senior Editor Jordan D. White promises. “Our long-term plan that all our creators have been working on in our secret Council Chamber has only just begun to come to fruition. With the filling of the two empty council seats, the Reign of X has ended, and it’s time for mutantkind to reach for their destiny!”

Glad to see Betsy there, where's Rogue??

Good question. Hopefully Rogue will still be in a X-book. Also, it's interesting that Old Cable is in the teaser, but Teen Cable isn't; I guess eventually Teen Cable will be sent back to the future, so that his (VERY confusing) cycle can continue.

Emma, Ororo and Hope look great! It was about time Hope finally got rid of that piece of cloth she used to carry around her neck (I know she already got rid of it during the Dawn of X era, but it's still nice to acknowledge that). And Deadpool's presence is interesting, because (at least as far as I know) he isn't a mutant, is he? Still, he's a fantastic character when written by someone capable of capturing his sense of humor (Duggan and Remender did great jobs with him).

As for Betsy remaining exactly like she was in Excalibur... well, let's wait and see. I read rumors that Howard will continue to write her, which may annoy many people here - but it also seems that Howard's stories improved a lot in this last arc and that her biggest problem was that she took too long to make Betsy interesting, so maybe she (or whoever will be writing Betsy's new X-book) will manage to deliver good stories from the beginning this time.

From the group shot the wires man is unknown.

The bulk of Betsy's armor is disheartening. Thankfully she wears no helmet to eclipse what is left of Betsy.

Knights of X sounds a Betsy team. I expect Magik and Nightcrawler to be members since they both are magically attuned and swordspeople.

Nightcrawler will be in Legion of X

Can someone photoshop Betsys sword to be a hot pink? It would look awesome glowing in the nosebleed section 😆

Many books! I like having Irene and Ruth back also. I don't know if Tessa is back already but I would like to see her too.

@randybear a shame Kurt and Betsy get along so well. I really like to read Betsy with the original Excalibur team and yes that wish extends to her twin brother Brian for their dynamic is interesting.

randybear said...

Yeah I agree. Kurt would have worked so well in Excalibur. The book severely needed some heart and humor and I love when Betsy gets to interact with Kurt they have great chemistry IMO

Jaime Braz said...

@randybear Remy was supposed to be the jester member with his sneaky Cajun ways to lighten the mood however he was made an embittered thief. Kurt would have suffered a similar fate perhaps written as a puritan Christian who despises magic for paganism and question his place on the team by sulking constantly.

If Knights of X is the sequel to Excalibur with only a name change the results will be poor again. Betsy needs support by good talent in her rough journey away from her Psylocke identity. Seeing her tucked far behind the big names she once shared a place with doesn't fill me with hope nor she in the form of a Blastoise.

I'm not too concerned about Elizabeth being in the top/back row. She's there with other prominent legacy characters, like Illyana, Essex, Cain, and Katherine. What I am concerned about is the fact that Tini stated that she will be helming Knights of X. I PRAY that it's a shift away from the storyline of Excalibur and directly ties into the goings-on of Krakoa. And if she has some of the same roster, let's hope she starts writing them more like themselves as she started to do with Bets and Ric towards the end. Her Remy is not to my liking at all. And her Jubilation needs to have more story than being Shogo's mom. And we never got to see Meggan do anything interesting at all.

I love Ororo's hairstyle. I prefer the fauxhawk versus the actual mohawak, and always love when they draw her with her afro-textured, curly hair.

@Eduardo, Sage/Tessa has been present throughout the entire Hickman era and plays a crucial role on Krakoa.

Was really hoping Jean and Kwannon would get new outfits for this next phase. Blinfold's look is great.

Rahsaan said...

Also, curious to see if Maddy will be like the version of herself that sacrificed her life with the X-Men before she was corrupted. I would love to see that Madelyn with her fully emergent psychic powers.

Eduardo said...

Thanks Rahsaan! I have dropped the comics here in Brazil, maybe this reboot might motivate me again!

I need Betsy and Kwannon to have new outfits since yesterday!!

@Rahsaan Knights of X is f'd up big time with Tini. We'll read about Betsy and Saturnyne scissor and lotta Remy Jubes Rictor and Shatty moping like well standing mops.

Kiki M. Ishola said...

@Rahsaan @Finn I made peace with Betsy never getting outta her kettle jail and Revanche never getting outta her porn Latina getup even tho she's Japanese drawn like Brazilian buttlift chica.

randybear said...

Oh puke Howard still writing Betsy? Jesus Christ

randybear said...

Spurrier and Gillen are RIGHT THERE.... marvel please for fucks sake

Rahsaan said...

You all,

I have seen no official announcement that she will be writing Knights of X and/or if that title will feature Elizabeth specifically, but I did read that she announced she would be writing that title on her Instagram stories. I do not have an Instagram account anymore, so I cannot verify.

However, it does seem like a title that would be up her alley based on what she has said and done thus far in the mutant universe. Meanwhile DC has been sure to flex regarding Tini:

Imma cry. The best get the worst in this life.

I'm hoping someone else gets a crack at writing Betsy. Unless Tini keeps the badassery that Betsy had when she took Arthur down.

I still rather Brian get CB back though & Betsy get Psylocke back even if that means sharing the name with Kwannon or Betsy get some original name.

Regardless I want Betsy to use her mutant psi powerset vs the CB one.

I also echo @Rahsaan & hope these stories shift into Krakoa based themes. I had more than enough of my fill of Otherworld lol.

I agree. Kinda tired of seeing Jean wearing that Marvel Girl costume. Her green version of the X-Men Red costume has been my favorite. Kwannon, was hoping she use the House of M costume or Uncanny X-Men Betsy wore on Magneto's team.

X-Man said...

Is Maddie actually a mutant though? Very confused on her lol.

Jaime Braz said...

@X-Man Madelyne Pryor for being a perfect clone of Jean Grey inherited her mutant powers. She makes rare use of them instead she uses the magic the demons instilled. The interactions between Jean and Madelyne will be interesting because their conflict has never been settled.

In my opinion Jean and Madelyne has more pull than the contrived Jean, Scott and homewrecker Emma triangle. The female clone who craves to be a real person is captivating.

Jaime Braz said...

@Kiki M. Ishola I'd rather you didn't feed tribadic ideas Tini Howard. Twitter does more than enough to raise the nausea levels in Betsy's deconstruction.

I wish social media users remembered Betsy's complicated love life with Warren and why not Neal Shaara Thunderbird who doted on her.

"I'm hoping someone else gets a crack at writing Betsy. Unless Tini keeps the badassery that Betsy had when she took Arthur down"

I agree. Fortunately, I think this is quite likely, since Howard has already finished her arc showing Betsy reaching rock bottom before climbing back up. Hopefully she won't do a "part 2" with Betsy being dragged through the mud again.

Hopefully this new book will also be more involved with Krakoa. Otherworld is interesting for some arcs, but not to be the only place the characters go to all the time.

Unknown is right that this is far from the only time Betsy has been written badly. She had quite a few bad periods. Especially during the time right after the twelve storyline when she and Jean swapped powers and she wore the crop top and bandana. That was probably her lowest period for me in terms on both characterization and fashion. LOL!

On another note, I pray that we also see a definitive conclusion to the Shogo as a dragon storyline. Whether he remains a human child or remains a dragon and goes off to live on Otherworld and never to be seen again so that Jubilation can be given a real and interesting story. LMAO.

FSaker said...

@Rahsaan, to be fair, ALL the X-Men had terrible characterization and fashion at that time (and then we remember that those stories were written by CLAREMONT, of all people)... it was hilarious how Rogue's hair would appear long one issue, then very short the following issue, then long again. Kitty's uniform was so bad that she was lucky she "died" (actually faked her own death) to get rid of it (and it also makes us understand why she got stuck for so long with the X-student uniform after that).

As for Shogo, I think the best solution would be for Jubilee to stop bringing him to Otherworld. His transformation into a dragon was cute the first time, but allowing him to do it every time, to the point where he may not even know whether he's a human or a dragon anymore, was really messed up.

I also don't think the writer (whoever this person is) should get rid of Shogo, as that would also be very messed up (adopted children shouldn't be seen as disposable). What the creative team SHOULD do, instead, is to have him being used only when Jubes is hanging out at Krakoa; whenever she has a mission, she should ask for another mutant to babysit him while she's out.

FSaker said...

Also, while I agree that Betsy has been written badly on other occasions (sometimes way worse than what we're getting now), I guess the thing bothering some readers (or at least the thing bothering ME) is that the current X-era is meant to show mutantkind flourishing as a society, and also when the X-Men are finally getting a push again, with Hickman in charge of big, meaningful stories... and then we have Betsy in Otherworld, almost completely disconnected from the Dawn of X.

That said, Knights of X may actually be more related to Krakoa than Otherworld this time, which would be a great thing.

Rahsaan said...

@FSaker, I am fine with Shogo remaining with Jubilation if he stops metamorphosing. If he continues to become a dragon, then I'm fine with him going to live on the Otherworld and roam free doing dragon things. Especially, if he is happier in that state. LOL.

LOL at the inconsistencies in Rogue's hairstyles. I totally forgot about that. Such a hot mess.

The funniest thing is that, if I remember correctly, whoever designed the uniforms for the Revolution era (I'm not sure if it was Yu or Kubert, as both were the artists of the two main X-books at that time) said that the inspiration for those uniforms was the X-Men movie...

That would make sense if that statement came from the artists from the Morrison era (more specifically the book written by Joe Casey). The Revolution era uniforms looked NOTHING like the way the X-Men were in the FOX movies. They were even flashier than the early 1990s uniforms (and definitely not in a good way).

Kiki M. Ishola said...

The designer for the revolution costumes was Francis Yu. Rogue, Colossus and Betsy looked good. Anything is better than the Jim Lee cameltoe clipper.
