A New Team of X-Men Chart the Course for the Reign of X in ‘X-Men’ #1

Marvel.com: After months of speculation, Marvel Comics is proud to unveil the new team of X-Men! Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Sunfire, Rogue, Wolverine, Synch, and Polaris will be the lineup in X-Men (2021), the new ongoing X-series launching in July. Brought to you by a team of X-Men all-stars—writer Gerry Duggan, artist Pepe Larraz, and colorist Marte Gracia—this new flagship X-Men title will showcase the incredible adventures of the first X-Men team since the mutant nation of Krakoa was formed in Jonathan Hickman’s revolutionary House of X/Powers of X.

The current era of X-Men has evolved mutant storytelling like never before. No longer protecting a world that hates and fears them, the X-Men said goodbye to their dream of coexistence and founded a thriving mutant homeland. But in the aftermath of X of Swords, original X-Men Cyclops and Marvel Girl realized that the world needed its premiere team of mutant Super Heroes. Things might be complicated between the nation of Krakoa and the rest of the Marvel Universe, but to the X-Men, things are simple—you do what’s right, you protect those who need protecting and you save the world we all share. This new team are the chosen champions of mutantkind, and they’re up for any battle to protect their people and their home planet.

“It's my privilege and honor to be reteamed with Pepe Larraz as we throw beautiful and deadly threats at the X-Men beginning in July,” writer Duggan said. “Mutants have saved themselves, and are now going to save the world. Krakoa will grow roots in the capital of the world, New York City, and the inaugural year will star Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Rogue, Wolverine, Synch, Sunfire, and Polaris. The threats to Earth will come fast and hit hard, and every page from Pepe and Marte will blow your hair back. See you in July.”

Don’t miss the team’s official debut during June’s Hellfire Gala, the highly anticipated event that will tie in to all your favorite X-Men titles. And be there for mutant history in the making when X-Men #1 hits stands on July 7.

Note: With Rogue out of the picture, it remains to be seen whether Excalibur will be reshuffled or gain a new team member.

Glad to see Rogue escape Excalibur. She was wallpaper for 20 issues lol

Also glad Gambit isn't here im so over them being tied to the hip. Yes I know they're married but they don't have to be an item in every title.

Congratulations to Lorna. I'm very proud Sunfire is finally considered an X-Man it was a long time coming after the Giant Sized X-Men conflict.

If I'm not mistaken Shiro wears his AoA costume. I hope he does for it's the best he had in ages.

...Not gonna lie, that's a pretty great lineup. In the right hands, Synch could become a major X-Man with the readers.

As for Excalibur, does it mean Rogue will leave the team or will she be on double shift? And if she leaves, will Gambit continue in the book or move to another title as well (especially considering how Howard seems to dislike him)?

And in case the Excalibur book keeps going on, who could join? Personally, I'd love to see Kwannon (despite several problems in writing, Howard did manage to make her interactions with Betsy very pleasant to read), Northstar and Aurora (due to their "elfish" looks fitting perfectly with Excalibur's D&D style, plus their powers could sorta fill the gap left by Rogue's)...

@randybear power couples work and with time they become less cute. Remy and Anna are unconventional compared to others.

It's the reason Betsy and Warren were separated. They have great chemistry and dynamic however their bond is at the same time their weakness as seen in the Dark Angel saga. And why I prefer Betsy to be linked from afar to Warren while seeing many guys.

Betsy reminds me of Carrie Bradshaw and Warren of Mr. Big. They're fun together and too much for each other.

I'd rather see Rogue doing double shifts than anything. Gambit will lose his anchor if Rogue leaves and Betsy her moral compass. It was the opposite in the Outback time which shows how much Anna matured and evolved as a hero.

Id prefer Excalibur just end completely and we move on to something 3lse entirely. The book has ran its course tike for a new writer to take the reigns over Betsy or someone else to write a new team. This team never vibed.

Agree. It's time for Marauders, Excalibur and X-Force to end and be relaunched with reshuffled casts.

If Excalibur is to continue, Gambit will be really out of place. The only reason he joined was because of Rogue.

I'm gonna miss Betsy/Rogue interacting, but it's not like Rogue was doing anything worthy in Excalibur

I swear I get tired of saying "burn that marvel girl costume" and that her gold/green X-Men Red look is awesome. I really hope Betsy be in a better book or at least spice up Excalibur since or maybe both Rogue and Gambit left need to fill those voids.

Brian has a say in Excalibur affairs. Marvel has him play second fiddle to Betsy instead of working together as Captain Britains. The worst idea was a whole Betsy corps that took away the unique multiversity and diversity of the concept. I'd love to see the twins work as a team in a book what better place than Excalibur.

FSaker said...

True. Betsy and Brian working together in the same book would be great; regardless of whether they'd still be in their current identities (Betsy as Captain Britain, Brian as Captain Albion), or exchanging their mantles, or with both of them being Captain Britain at the same time, or whatever other possibility arises.

Ironically, a team-up between them would be the closest thing the Krakoan community would be to Xavier's dream of mutantkind and humankind collaborating with each other, since Brian isn't a mutant.

randybear said...

I was hoping Brian would remain CB protecting the UK and Betsy as CB protecting Krakoa but both still obligated to Otherworld but nah Captain Avalon was just a weak rebrand for Brian.

Sadly. Brian was demoted to his mad brother's keeper. The domino effect whenever you choose to remove the upper echelon and move two pieces up instead of picking one new role for the new Kwannon.

Jaime Braz said...

Well said. Brian isn't really a normal human being half otherworldly and half earthling. I have to agree that Xavier's dream comes true from such a team up. We can hope it realizes in future Excalibur stories.

Jaime Braz said...

Someone predicted Synch would become the strongest mutant putting me in thought why Hickman picked him for the main team. Maybe something big coming for him or after him.

randybear said...

Pretty much. But whenever Marvel finally adds Brian to MCU it won't be long before the comics quickly try to reflect that. So we will see what happens to Betsy when that time comes.

Eduardo said...

This lineup is indeed good, but after all that Excalibur has build up to, I was also hoping to see more Otherworld stuff/interaction. Maybe Excalibur goes through members changes and we get to see it, so that Betsy's journey on becoming Captain Britain might have a more relevant role.

If I bring myself to invest any more money and have not completely dropped all of these books:

1. I look forward to hopefully seeing Rogue have a personality again under a new writer.

2. Everett and Laura and Shiro are so ready for flagship status and deserve this.

3. I pray that Jean and Rogue get contemporary, stylish uniforms as they look the pits.

Jaime Braz said...

I'm afraid Brian isn't the same case as Mar Vell. The most iconic Excalibur run includes Brian as the Captain Britain and have Betsy fill that role in the MCU will alienate many comic fans of both. Besides Betsy as Psylocke is more popular than Captain Britain therefore Marvel has shot itself in the foot. The casual movie goers don't pay much attention to Captains. It's a chaos that Kevin Feige will need to solve.

Nate X said...

The MCU will definitely introduce Brian as Captain Britain. There's no doubt about it. Betsy's tenure as CB won't last long.

Tobias Chatti said...

The first time Storm is absent from the X-Men following her departure from Marauders it was a sucker punch.

Tobias Chatti said...

The women to men ratio is 4 to 3. I'd switch Laura with Darwin he is a more interesting mutant.

Tobias Chatti said...

It's the second time Betsy tries the Captain Britain. It won't stick like the first time it was a bad idea to repeat the same mistake.

FSaker said...

@Tobias Chatti, to be fair, Betsy's first time as Captain Britain was very short, and it was planned from the beginning to end the way it ended. This time, Marvel seems to be intending to turn her into Captain Britain for real. Of course, it doesn't mean their idea will stick this time, just that the situation is different.

As for the X-Men team, I agree, Darwin should be in it. Although I wouldn't remove Laura to add him - considering that both of them (plus Synch) were heavily involved in the Children of the Vault story, I think all of them should be part of this new team (assuming the CotV story will continue in this new book, of course). And, well, a trademark of most X-Men teams is having a Wolverine in it...

Nearly two years later and Betsys new status quo has been my least favorite. What exactly has Betsy done in Excalibur of interest? There's yet to be a moment where I felt excited for the character.

X-Man said...

@Randybear I agree. My favorite Betsy moments in Excalibur is when she hasn't been Captain Britain.

randybear said...

Me too. Literally my favorite scene with Betsy in all of Tini's Excalibur so far is in issue #1 where she wears the Asrar outfit for a few pages lol

Tobias Chatti said...

FSaker it's idiocy Marvel scrapped the evolution of Betsy as Psylocke. From her start in the X-Men in the 1980 to 2020 Betsy lived a thousand lives and had growth to place her on the class of Rogue and Storm. Betsy is burned as Captain Britain and Brian is not himself as Captain Avalon.

Laura is a female Wolverine and Wolverine has been used to abuse. Darwin is more interesting and new. I would keep buying X-Men comics to see how he survives and evolves from harm and death.

Tobias Chatti said...

Rahsaan I want the same forget the Jim Lee ones and find new costumes for the X-Men. Pepe Larraz and Mahmud Asrar are the best designers Marvel has.

I want Storm keep her Mahmud costume and Betsy get in her Mahmud costume. Jean get the Mahmud variant with green and yellow and Rogue a military getup.

Tobias Chatti said...

Sorry I wanted to say camo getup for Rogue with the green then oily and brown splashes.

X-Man said...

Yeah that was a good scene. I also liked her teaming up with Alternate Kwannon and how "Malice" in Betsy's body took everyone down using Betsy's powers the way Betsy should have been using them all along.

I love this lineup. So ready for Jean to get a new costume. And siked about Synch!:)
