'Uncanny X-Men' Disassembled: New Creative Team & Release Date

Writers Ed Brisson, Kelly Thompson, and Matthew Rosenberg join forces with artistic all-stars!

Marvel.com: Last month at San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel Comics announced that Uncanny X-Men would return this fall. Today, the creative team was officially announced as well as an official release date for Uncanny X-Men #1 -- Wednesday, November 14. The new ongoing series is jam-packed with X-talent -- all the writers and artists have previously worked on X-Men characters and stories and will be teaming up for more mutant mayhem!

Uncanny X-Men will launch with a 10-part weekly epic called "Disassembled." Where the series goes from there depends on who is left standing! In this "epic tale of mystery and tragic disappearance," every remaining mutant on the planet will come together in "an adventure so Earth-shattering, it could very well be the X-Men’s FINAL mission!" With stakes this high, it will take an extraordinary team to tell this story.

Writers Ed Brisson (Extermination), Kelly Thompson (Mr. and Mrs. X), and Matthew Rosenberg (Phoenix Resurrection, Astonishing X-Men) will join the equally X-perienced artistic team of Mahmud Asrar (X-Men Red), R.B. Silva (X-Men Blue), Yildiray Cinar (Weapon X), and Pere Perez (Rogue and Gambit). Leinil Frances Yu will provide artwork for the covers.

Uncanny X-Men #1 will go on sale Wednesday, November 14. Stay tuned to Marvel.com for the latest news!

She's drawn in the other body...

Yes, her REAL body is back for good!!! Love it

I’m still afraid to celebrate, but seeing her on this page with that body and Sunspot and Monet back in the fold has me giddy for this franchise for the first time in like 20 years.

Rahsaan said...

And for everyone who says British Betts isn’t gorgeous, that’s crazy. Like any character, she looks how the artist draws her. She looks fly as fuck here with her stylish costume and layered hair.

@Rashaan
I think that's Trinary, not Monet.

Rahsaan said...

And Northstar, Sunspot and Monet, Dust, Sunfire and Prodigy

Rahsaan said...

@Alex, damn. I played myself mixing up brown women. SMDH. lol.

Anyway, Trinary is cool too. I just hope all these folks are just wallpaper!

Is that Cannonball with the long hair and beard?

Rahsaan said...

@Alex, never mind. I see Sam
blasting atop. I think that is Cypher with the bears! Maybe they made him all rugged and grown for Betts! LMAO.

British Betsy looks great! And it seems Domino is getting a new uniform. And... Madrox is alive again? I guess I missed the story where he returned.

I wonder: are ALL of these characters part of the UXM roster? Will the next era be similar to Fraction's (but maybe with better distribution of panels among characters)? This could be interesting.

Oh, and it's interesting that many X-students are in this art, but Cable, Monet and Hope are not. After years being hyped as the mutant messiah, Hope was thrown unceremoniously in editorial limbo by Marvel and sadly it doesn't look like she's coming back anytime soon...

Ugh am I the only person unhappy with this change. Ninja Psylocke was so much more appealing to me :( another non descriptive Caucasian psychic dullzzzz

Alexis said...

Looks like the original Betsy is back. Shame, she's going to go back into being a supporting character among the X-men. She won't be appearing in any Capcom or Marvel games as the cool sword wielding character. I hope she can still fight. Also, I have the impression that she will no longer be a telekinetic.

Nate X said...

She's still a ninja and still will have swords.

She was a supporting character the entire last year in Soule's boring Astonishing run. Being a "cool azn ninja" didn't make her star in one of the core books Blue or Gold or Red.

She wasn't even in any books for three months.

She hasn't appeared in any Capcom Vs game since the 90s.

Your excuses fall flat.

So close to a full Outback reunion!

Deemo Dude said...

So I guess her ninja body is dead ? I'm not gonna jump go conclusions. How odd it's Unacnny X-Men where we first met Kwanon, Betsy returned and got resurrected and now here we are. I have a feeling Kwanon could come to play. I can see she still got psychic blades, But so far no news about her blade, Shurayuki. Hope she doesn't lose it. But it's good to have this comic back because it bring walk the X-Men we love with good art too. Can't wait to see what's that mission that could be their last.

Alex said...

The two pieces of art work of her we've seen so far still show she has her psychic knives. So obviously she will retain her martial arts abilities and probably (for better or worse) need to get up close and personal during combat situations. She doesn't need to be in an Asian body to be a ninja. Ninjutsu is a martial arts discipline. Even Kitty is classified as a ninja.
All I think Marvel/Disney is doing is getting rid of the more stereotypical Asian themes sometimes used with the character by putting her in her original or who knows at this point, Sapphire's body.

Rahsaan said...

@Alex, I’ll be happy if she looks like herself again and it sticks for good. And even happier if somehow she achieves it somehow without a makeover of the Sapphire Styx body a la X/Fantomex and Madelyne/Ana Cortes.

I also won’t miss the Kwannon body as I don’t miss Kwannon. I would like to see some of the psychics of color rise to prominence, like Monet and Karma. All while Betsy retains the prominence she had about a year or two ago before the current Blue/Gold fiasco.

I also hope the writers reunite her with Brian And Meggan if this change is for good and show their reactions.

randybear said...

Yeah, I don't think Disney wants to associate itself with something that could very well potentially be viewed as offensive or politically incorrect such as Asian Psylocke.. soooo don't expect this to be reversed. Besides, now she's no longer a parasite inhabiting someone else's body lol

The teaser looks good and the concept sounds interesting! Can't wait to see Psylocke drawn by these A-Listers

Deemo Dude said...

This title I've been waiting for so long. Asian or Not, I loved Betsy in the uncanny comics. specially 2016 one when she was with magneto. hopefully she gets her awesome art back !

Mikey said...

Where is Quentin?!

Rahsaan said...

Also, this artwork highlights just how terrible Jean’s sentinel costume is. I know they wanted to harken back to her 90s look (which was also a terrible one), but this outfit makes her look more like a sentinel than Karima. Like a Gen 1 Sentinel.

Mikey said...

Where is Magneto?

Brian Jason said...

Unknown, I agree with you. I'm not a stan for old school British/Caucasian Betsy. A bunch of us aren't on Facebook. We saw her growth in the body we have seen for the past 25+. To each their own when it comes to Betsy, God bless all of you who got her "back" in her original body, but for some of us she died in that fight with Sapphire. This is #notmypsylocke

Anonymous said...

ooh she looks good...I do wish the costume had more black in it....I like the purple tips on her hair....really excited about the body change

FSaker said...

@Mikey - Quentin is with the West Coast Avengers now, if I'm not mistaken. As for Magneto, we'll find out in X-Men Black, same as Emma and Mystique. I guess neither of the three will be back to the X-Men so soon.

Jeferson said...

I really hope she still be a telekinetic, not just telepathic... She was at her top level of power last year, since Olivia stole the movie... Now, they change it again... I just want she still powerful like the recent stories, or at least so fierce like the Outback days.

Unknown said...

It took a couple of glances at this picture to even notice Psylocke standing there in the corner. Sigh.

Are we sure that she is Caucasian? She looks kind of Asian here.
Also, in both pictures of this new Psylocke, her energy blades seem smaller than before.

It's also problematic how they did not draw Storm's costume correctly and they distorted her face more than anybody else.

I thought that this was going to be a team book, but it seems like a mini event happening right after another event.

Anonymous said...

Definitely looks like British Betsy to me and I’m stoked!!!

Tazirai said...

I'm loving having my version of Psylocke back. Here's hoping she stays as more than a sword-wielding ninja chick. She's grown a lot in the last few years. Here's hoping to more upward mobility. I love that Upper class lady of Adventure look she's got going.

Atomic Ton said...

Not to sound bias. As much as I appreciate the original Psylocke (prime), which was basically her defining point as a character. It just felt completely random or out of nowhere for whoever proposed this because we were kind of cheapen out of the form of storytelling and artwork. It doesn't truly feel natural nor justice for her.

Due to this, I have this a weird feeling she going to try it out for a year or two (similar to what happened to her costume design by Kris Anka). Overall, we haven't seen anything yet until the next chapter, where we know for sure it would lead her into a new body. This is possibly interesting take for certain writers on how Psylocke is to be interpreted (Like Wolverine's heat claws). Overall, the concept is interesting, I just wished this opens the door for a bigger opportunity for her.

Mikey said...

Oh crap! I forgot about those 3. I like Emma and Magneto on the x-men. I like mystique on the team but they haven’t done anything with her since Psylocke “fixed” her

Rahsaan said...

Brian,
I’m admittedly a stan and biased, but you really almost missed her on the picture? She stands out with lavender hair and and pink energy projecting from her face and both her hands in the form of butterfly and dagger. In fact, she is one the characters that clearly stands out as quite recognizable to me.

Rahsaan said...

I have a question. Why do those of you who say it doesn’t matter to what body she has in tems of arguing she should retain Kwannon’s body, then belive that all her character development since returning from her death by Vargas under Claremomt Remender and Bunn will be undone just, because she might no longer be in Kwannon’s body? It seems to me that we are actually getting the ultimate plan that Claremont originally had for her development.

X-Man said...

Ita with Rahsaan. I dont see how any of her character development would be lost. It's still the same character. She still should have all the knowledge and lessons she's learned along the way. The only thing that should change is that she won't be trapped inside the skin of another person.

Some more observations regarding characters other than Psylocke (who looks fantastic in this art, by the way):

- Nightcrawler's goatee looks great! Please keep him that way for many issues, Marvel.

- And this "Disassembled" name for the first story arc... I wonder if it will be similar to what Claremont did after the Outback X-Men went through Siege Perilous, with several issues focusing on what most of the X-Men were doing while the team was separated (Wolverine, Jubilee and Psylocke in Madripoor, Rogue in Savage Land, Forge and Banshee in Muir Island, teen Storm meeting Gambit, and so on). It could be VERY interesting (as long as the team eventually gets back together, of course).

- Finally, this will sound silly, but the first time I saw this art, I thought, "hey, the Outback X-Men are back! Look, it's Havok, Dazzler (possibly with her best visual in over a decade), Longshot, British Psylocke... wait, no, that's not Longshot, it's Magik". Oh well.

Anonymous said...

Is Betsy actually in her ORIGINAL body? I though that was destroyed. Until the release of the final Mystery in Madripoor issue, all we have are hints that she did yet ANOTHER body swap, this time with Sapphire Styx. People who are celebrating that she is in her original body are misguided. If anything she's simply in another body that happens to be WHITE. All these diatribes about poor Betsy being stuck in Kwannon's body and longing to return to her own fall flat because she is still not in her original body.

Those who argue that Betsy will somehow be happier because of this new body swap are painting Psylocke as a racist. As if she's somehow made "whole" because she's no longer in an Asian body but now in a new White body that coincidentally is not even British/Otherworldly. Simple because she's outwardly white again, she's going to be able to restore relationship dynamics with her family and friends?

Those that argue the Kwannon body swap was detrimental to Psylocke have to realize that with this new incarnation, she will still be looking though someone else's eyes, speaking with someone else's larynx, and feeling with someone else's body parts.

Some of the people on here are not celebrating that she's in her original body, they're celebrating that she's in a WHITE body.

randybear said...

You're creating your own scenario here and making assumptions about complete strangers. Your argument is weak and you're anonymous. Kick rocks, please or find a real issue to argue about.

Alexis said...

If Betsy's undergone a body swap again, I hope she's back in her original body, and not inside Sapphire's body with her hair dyed purple. The body swap is getting ridiculous. Claremont's facial molding/plastic surgery made more sense...

Her real body was destroyed in the Psylocke miniseries where she went to Japan and killed Matsuo. So unless it's explained in the final issue of Mystery in Madripoor, this body is NOT her original half-British/half-Otherworldly body. So again a body swap, this time with Sapphire Styx. Why is this body swap better or more acceptable than the Kwannon body swap?

Anonymous said...

Just saw this! So she's back in her white body. While I prefer the Post-Siege body a disagree with the change, it is what it is.

So here's what I liked about this promo - Havok, Dazzler, and Psylocke standing together! Being a fan of the outback days, that makes me happy. At first glance, I thought Magik was Longshot (the bushy blonde hair, lol) so that really made me jump at first but, still, good enough.

I like that they've also given back Rogue a Green & Black combination re: her costume.

To those that are unhappy with the new body swap, you're not alone. I see a lot of confused comments on Instagram and comments to the effect of "but why tho" and "dumb move to satisfy their guilt" but in any case I'm gonna see how this plays out.

That would be Rahne Sinclair as Wolfsbane. Know your Marvel Characters (joking aside).

Alexis said...

Actually, Jamie Braddock re-created her body when she went into Otherworld during her time in X-force. Also, it doesn't make sense how Betsy can remain a telepath inside Sapphire's body. Sapphire is not a telepath, but a cheaper version of Selene. At least Kwannon had some degree of telepathy, though low.

The one time racist and SJW get what they want. Racist get more white representation and Political Correct people get her back in a white body that's not even her own body still. I guess you can make both sides happy some times.

Vigmed said...

That's Husk, in-between the two.

This is a pretty cool pic. Makes you realize how much of a new costume Jean needs. It sticks out, not in a good way. Polaris could use something new. Hm. Actually, I see now that some of these are old school looks.

It is a good mix of new and old X-Men, this pic. Feels, refreshing.

I really hope Psylocke retains everything. While I like the look, her demeanor already seems different. She usually glares at us. lol. Just, give her a sword, real or psychic, so I know that some things aren't so changed. But maybe things are that changed. Think she'll be as bloodthirsty? Will the swap make her realize the wrongdoings and begin a redemption arc to purity? Ugh. Guess we'll find out soon!

She looks good. I'm happy for the change. Can't wait to find out how she adapts. Also thinking Psylocke will get a SECONDARY MUTATION TO CHANGE BETWEEN FORMS!

And PLEASE give us some interesting and notable interactions with other characters the first time they meet again. Lets not just send out a memo.

Atomic Ton said...

AO - Sorry, I was referring to you for not knowing your Marvel Characters. I was just trying to make it sound serious. Also, that would be Husk, Cannonball's sister.

Alexis, answering your question, I believe Psylocke's power has somehow manifested even further due to her receiving the death seed from Archangel. Even though it was somewhat suppressed by Jean Grey AOA. It seems that even from death prevented her from dying thus allows her to gain these newly found abilities.
It seems that she can go into people minds as a parasite like the Shadowking. I think the Psychic energy which Sapphire has absorbed was an added bonus to eliminate Saphire's memories and recreate it as it was her own body.

Rahsaan said...

Anonymous, I addressed this directly above im a a reply. In fact, I think others did too when all this talk started before the variant Madripoor cover was released. We said that we are hoping it is not Sapphire’s body, but her own. Not sure how they will do that, so I’m curious to see and hope it isn’t another hack job. It looks like her old face; not Sapphire Styx’s so, I hope Marvel does not put her in that body.

Rahsaan said...

I’m still hoping all of this is Jamie’s doing like the last time he remade her body with his power vs Sapphire’s body. Although, the Sapphire Body seems to be exploding, so wondering if like some of you said, Psylocke is recreating herself from the inside out which would be more deus ex machina stuff. Like Phoenix-level deus ex machina. LOL.

I so hope this is resurrected Jamie as that at least fits canon with his powers.

Anonymous said...

Eric Ton, LOL that is way beyond geeky. But thanks. It's hard to recognize all of the ones in the distance the way they're drawn. I didn't clue in that Blond Jesus was Doug Ramsay. Still not recognizable without being told that's him.

Eric, there is one more Marvel character I don't recognize in the right bottom corner of the pic, and I hope you'll help me figure out who she is. She's got lavender hair, two psychic knives, and it looks like she got rejected from Jem and the Holograms or was a D-List character in She-Ra. It's possible that Bow dumped her for being a poor man's Glimmer. It appears to be a Caucasian lady.

I think it would be really cool if Psylocke being 'reborn' has to do with the Death Seed. But I think it's also cool that Jamie is back, and it seems like the timing is a little too close to be coincidental.

Vigmed, I also hope she retains her edge in her British form. On one hand, I like the way she looks, it's pretty, but how will she lift her arms during a fight without having her over-the-shoulder top bunch up? Hopefully her opponent will recognize what a fine lady she must be and allow her some shirt adjustment time between each lunge of her psychic knife so that she can fix her top each time it gets above her shoulders. If they are going to make her British, she still needs to keep her fighting edge. I like the idea that she is a warrior to be reckoned with beneath her delicate form, but she's looking a bit dainty in this particular image. Pixie looks like she could take her out, no problem.

I hope somehow this is her original body. Or at the very least a body that was created for her that is virtually identical to her original one. I actually started out reading "asian" Betsy and when the Kwannon story came about, I went back and read some back stories and found her to be a very compelling character. Like I said before if the post perilous body was a merged Eurasian body, I could live with that. However, I dont like the idea of someone totally living inside of another person's body and "posing" as a minority. I actually find that somewhat offensive to be honest. I'm hoping that if this is another body that at least it can be one that was made just for her and not previously inhabited by another person. Hopefully this plays out well.

FSaker said...

"She looks good. I'm happy for the change. Can't wait to find out how she adapts. Also thinking Psylocke will get a SECONDARY MUTATION TO CHANGE BETWEEN FORMS!"

I LOVE your idea! It's not very likely that this will happen, but if it did, Marvel would be able to please both groups of fans (...or to make both angry. But I would like to have both of her forms still around without having to bring Kwannon back). AND it would be much, MUCH better than her shaping Sapphyre's body to make it her own (really, that would mean she'd still be trapped in someone else's body).

I will be mad at Marvel if the explanation for her new look is that she's occupying Sapphyre's body.

Though Shana is the one with hair color closest to either version of Bets. Now she just needs to appropriate a black woman’s body. Is Threnondy still around? I think she would be a good choice for useless character from the 90s to serve as Psylocke host. :-p

Anonymous said...

Rahsaan since its now a fact that Psylocke's secondary mutation is the ability to 1) get inside her opponent's body; 2) yell at/guilt trip them from within until their head explodes; 3) and body swap with their glassy remains, I think Lockheed would be a better host since he's already purple. Then she could be telepathic, telekinetic, AND a fire breather.

Well, Emma has been a villain (or at least an antagonist to the X-Men) for quite a while now, so it's unlikely that Betsy's new old body is related to her current situation.

In fact, the X-Men Black solicitations makes me suspect she may end up becoming one of Apocalypse's new Horsemen, alongside Magneto, Mystique and Juggernaut (each issue of X-Men Black will feature one of these characters, and Apocalypse will have a backstory in all issues - sure, Mojo will also be featured in one issue, but I don't see him as Horseman material).

FYI that's NOT her "real/original" body , that's that villainess Styx or however she was named, Betsy psy-jumped her mind to that class C villain. So it sucks it not her British or her Japanesse body it's a class C cillaiess body.. Her third body. U.u

Finn said...

Class C villainess body.

FSaker said...

@Finn - We'll have to wait for Mystery in Madripoor #4 to be sure of that. At the moment, it does look like the most logical explanation (and if she's now occupying Sapphyre's body, yes, it doesn't solve the complaint people had about her being trapped in someone else's body at all; in fact, it makes it worse, as she was at least used to being in Kwannon's body and now would have to get used to a C-class villainess body), but Marvel may end up surprising us positively for once.

This week is supposed to bring the final issue from the miniseries featuring Wolverine's enemies, so we'll find out Betsy's fate next week, right?

Alexis said...

Given that her Asian body is still intact (just comatose/lifeless), I hope they cryopreserve it in case they decide to give Asian Psylocke a comeback in the future.

Does that mean that Betsy is just like Cuckoo from Alan Davis's comics, ClanDestine.
Betsy can pretty much live forever then, and keep stealing body.
