I've felt mixed on the new costume. On the Uncanny cover it looks good. Same for the Dodson alt cover. Other art work I've seen of it makes it look meh. I'm sure it'll be that way for a while until she gets another body, I mean costume.
In some panels it feels very Captain Britain also. Just with a pink & purple scheme.
It's definitely a throwback to her pink costumes of the 80's. I guess Kwannon until proven otherwise will keep the dark body suit but I wouldn't be surprised if they redesign her when she comes back later.
The costume does look terrible here, but that's no surprise as there has been no good art throughout 99 percent of this mini. The only good art in the entire 4 issues is the panel of Betsy cradling herself after lending on the bone pile.
One thing to note which is a good point that a CBR author brought up:
"It is interesting that when Betsy instinctively started the process of piecing a body together, she chose to go back to the body she hasn’t inhabited in over 20 years. Of course, time moves much slower in comics than in the real world, so for Betsy it hasn’t been two decades since she merged with Kwannon."
The new costume doesn't appetize me. It only looks good in David Marquez's Uncanny X-men poster. We had a way better version of a modern britsh Besty costume in Age of X universe.
It's. Such. Bad. Writing. Betsy appears in her old form, does not say a word (so no accent)... and Snake-Whip says "Don't know who you are tea and crumpets, but I'm gonna--"
I want to be smoking whatever the creative team is smoking. At least when I'm reading this.
It would have been great if in this conversation if she and Jubes had discussed that fact that back when she used to look like this, she literally was the one that grabbed Jubes and saved her from the M Squad's mutant killing machine. That would have been another cool nod to the characters' histories.
I wonder if there's going to be a Kwannon series now. She has the psy-knife and all...and perhaps the same personality as Psylocke. I think she will end up being as important as the original British Psylocke. My fear now is that the original Betsy might becoming more of a secondary character. With all of the existing Jean Grey or versions of (Hope Summers, Rachel etc...), Marvel probably thought they could pull multiple versions of Psylocke too...
The molecular reconstruction sounds ridiculous, and is just lazy writing. The fact she can rebuild a whole body instantaneously (with clothes) is just absurd. I miss it when there was a bit of real science in this (Claremont's explanation of how Rachel could become dino made more sense, even though the science was faulty).
Anyway, seems more like Betsy is inhabiting what's left of Sapphire. But, it also means that all of those souls that Sapphire previously absorbed are now part of Betsy as well. So she's also a bit like Rogue in a way, where she has a lot of different psyches.
Psyloco, literally nothing that you said happened in the issue. She didn't rebuild a body on her own, she was very clear that she tapped into the power unleashed by Sapphire's body, just like every telepath on the Marvel Universe has tapped into the powers of others before. Let's not forget that this is comics. The entire Marvel Universe (Psylocke included) was rebuilt from scratch by Reed Richards after Secret Wars ended.
Also, there isn't any Sapphire body. It exploded, period. There aren't any souls left. Psylocke set them free. It was all thoroughly explained.
@Psylocko, that is incorrect. Sapphire and her body were completely destroyed. Psylocke is bothing like Rogue. I have the issue and they explain that she made her own body.
And I agree that it is extremely lazy writing, including giving Kwannon the walking plot device any more story or chance of one.
The new costume is not good. But let's face it, British Psylocke's costumes were all pretty bad. (I didn't mind the armor though.) I like the character but it's hard to make her look compelling visually.
So I hope they rethink the off-the-shoulder thing. It's literally last season. How can she lift her arms in battle without having to adjust her top? She looks like a 45-year old Pixie who got to heavy for her wings, going as Jessica Jones for Halloween.
@Australian Outback, Now we gotta work on getting our Magic 8 roster back for at least one team adventure. Hell, we can even throw in Madelyne and Jubes and make it 10. Too bad, Gateway is dead.
I'm excited to read this. I do hope she uses her telepathy creatively like she's been doing recently and in the past. Love the use of her telepathy for misdirection here. I'm also glad that she was the one that made the change happen. It's kinda full circle. She regained control. Love it.
Criticisms aside, how sweet is the last scan with Betsy and Jubilee talking? Remember when they first met and Jubilee hated her and didn't trust her even after many adventures together? And now she cares for Psylocke enough to bring her a snack and help her vent out her feelings...
The miniseries may have been a mess, but this page alone makes its existence worth it.
It is so nostalgic. Even with the poor explanation (at least, better than Jean's mess return) I felt like "waking up from a long long nightmare" after reading. See her using her tp like the oldie-goldie days was warm. I felt like reading a 90's arc. I am happy with her being her again (and, for good or not, she is no longer a ninja and I guess a telekinetic neither)
It wasn't really shade. Jean was PSI-blind at that point only having the use of her TK. Betsy was just using her to boost her own powers. "Oh, you're not using it? You can't use it? Well lemme use you as a battery..."
Oh, I guess that is kinda shady. Haha. Well, it was Stormy's idea. She's the #1 Heather in this.
First of all, I know this is a comic so there's a certain amount of suspension of disbelief. That said, if we're using science:
Molecules can neither be created nor destroyed, only changed. So, she would have been creating a "NEW" body from Sapphire's molecules.
Imagine: Water (Sapphire) - boiled to steam (Psylocke exploding her/Sapphire) - catching condensation to re-collect water (Psylocke building a NEW original body)...
Now, the only hope is that the process DISTILLED her molecules and left behind the corrupted parts in a pile with all the shattered pieces.
Because Jean was acting Betsy was gonna pull some underhanded stuff. Though, Betsy isn’t above pulling some underhanded stuff. At least, not back then.
@Rahsaan, Thanks for the links for Lee's take on the original body. I always heard that Lee didn't like the character from her looks to her powers so that was the push for the sexy asian ninja idea
One problem I have with the mini is the ending. So they all head back to the school & decided to just leave Kwannon's/Betsy former body there at the scene of the battle?
You'd think just to be polite they'd take it back & bury it. Or Betsy would have it buried in Japan in the place her caucasian body was laid to rest before Matsuo destroyed it.
You'd think considering how many people get clones or have their DNA stolen the X-Men would have a protocol for securing the remains of teammates.
Regarding Kwannon’s body being left there... Again very poir writing. In general, I hoping this new era of Uncanny will get a way from bad writing which we’ve seen with X-Men for the last 20 or so years.
As for Lee not like Psylocke, that is urba legend. It was not Lee’s idea to change her. He was a neophyte taking the direction of senior staffer, Claremont and Claremont inly intended the change to be temporary but he abruptly left Marvel due to a dispute with editor, Harras and Psylocke got stuff with a changed body and then retcons and the creation of Kwannon by a hack writer. LoL.
well it seems that new switch or the old switcharoo is in the news like this one on gizmodo site. neat. keep up the good work on your favorite character.
I second Rahsaan's point about Jim Lee. Unfortunately, I cannot source the statement (it was in an old WIZARD magazine and I don't remember the issue), but Jim Lee has actually listed Psylocke as character he likes.
The confirmed Psylocke haters are these following list of jerkweeds: Scott Lobdell, Fabian Nicieza, Joe Madureira, Steven Seagle, and Joe Kelly (kind of).
“For so long, my life has been out of control. Chaos and serendipity, wrapped in insanity. I have suffered, I have lost. Not just my life, but my very soul, my self. But no more. Now I know who I am.” – Elizabeth ‘Betsy’ Braddock, daughter of Otherworld, mutant, telepath, telekinetic, defender of the realm and, above all, X-Man.

Her new costume looks so dated. It makes her look like she was just beamed down from the original starship Enterprise.

@Anonymous, I just flatlined.
All Betsy's body swap arcs have poor writing as pointed out by Unknown. Nothing is as bad as the Sisterhood. LOL!

Is using a 'soul energy' explosion to build a new body ridiculous?
Sure. But not really any more ridiculous than anything else in comics.
And are we really going to use dino-Rachel as a defense of anything? Haha.

Guys,
Maybe now that Betsy is restored we’ll get some nostalgic shade like this. LOL:

Lol. I got it now.
