Betsy Braddock: Captain Britain #1 Preview

Betsy Braddock: Captain Britian #1
Writer:
Tini Howard
Art by: Vasco Georgiev
Cover by: Erica D'Urso

The Story: The Captain Comes Home! And she’s got a whole new mission! With Otherworld settled, Braddock Manor restored, and her brother Captain Avalon at her side, you’d think things look pretty good for Betsy Braddock. Only it turns out, good ole Britain doesn’t want her back. No one wants a mutant menace carrying the shield of Captain Britain, and Betsy’s made more than a few enemies along her way. Quest-less and country-less, Betsy must define a role for herself. A fresh take on a beloved character, don’t miss the latest Tini Howard extravaganza and fan-favorite artist Vasco Georgiev’s Marvel debut!

The self-insert is real. Betsy as Psylocke has had to lay down her life against the Brood, the Reavers, the Marauders, Apocalypse's minions, the Shadow King, [...] but she needs Rachel to remind her to send some tabloid journalist blasting. xD

Hey, maybe Tini is picking up where her pal Leah left off (who claimed that Psylocke has only felt confident in Kwannon's body).

Off to a bad start already. 1) Betsy can't stand up for herself in front of a pig man. 2) Betsy being told by Rachel to suck it up. 3) Betsy asking Rachel to handle the threat while she waits. Why is TH so determined to make Betsy whiny and insecure? I don't know.

The art is wasted on Tini. Betsy is wasted away. Rachel too. Pull the plug to that yenta FFS!

So... they're saving dinosaurs, yet Betsy doesn't use the opportunity to mention the time when Rachel almost became a dinosaur? What a wasted opportunity.

And yes, I find it hard to believe that Betsy wouldn't tell the TV host and Micromax to f*** off. Which, yes, would be a terrible move in terms of PR, but let's face it, that's what she always used to do whenever someone provoked her (even when she knew it would be better to act polite).

Wow that was boring.

Man, remember when Betsy had sass and spark and backbone? I miss those days.

How many years has she been held hostage by Tini Howard now? Are we still hoping THIS TIME she'll do Betsy justice?

Particularly, I'm hoping we get to June soon enough so this is finally cancelled. xD

@Guy As I said the on the CBR forums, it's not really TH I have a bone to pick with anymore; if she has such a poor vision as a writer and keeps getting jobs in spite of that, it is clear she is not the root cause of the problem. At this stage, I am more surprised that there are folks who say they will support this new book, even though they were let down by the writer's previous work.

The idea of bringing in the current reality of tabloid journalism and pitting a character up against an attack dog pundit is not necessarily a bad one, but depicting Betsy Braddock losing her cool is not in character. Again, here is the idea defining the character and forgetting the fact the Betsy is a one of the worlds most powerful telepaths, I mean, what human would want to mess with her that hard? She could kill that guy with a thought for pissing her off, not that she would, but she might make him lose his bowels for it or implant some kind of psychic command that would effect him later on just for laughs, that would be in Betsys character to do, not ethical, but I dont think she would let anyone get the better of her, particularly a bully, when the reality is, she could easily change his mind for him and stop him from talking so she could get a word in. I think Betsy is capable of crossing the line, which is what made her a scary cool character, she would have done something so sly and clever to get back at him that no one could pin it on her. And it would have been fun to hear her inner thoughts as she was doing it. There may be a moment where they revisit this and make her do something about it, but she would not need Rachels tough love comments to do it, whe just would have

So we’re back to characters in this never ending saga calling Bets a body-snatcher. 🥱 Tini’s writing is to damn trite.

Also, I know that usually anyone featured in a recent X-Men election is someone who the office has plans for in case they don’t make it to the flagship book. Poor Micromax might have done better in that slightly less horrid Dugan book than this bullcrap.

I can't wait to not buy this book so it will die after five issues. Then I will file a restraining order against TH on Betsy's behalf lol

TH knocking it out the park and laughing all the way to bank

cups of haterade overflow

To each their own. I don't think she has found Betsy's "fire", or her edge. It continues to elude Betsy in Tini's writing imho.

I'm glad some like her writing, but I don't think she's laughing to the bank at all. She's definitely been asking for people to pre-order the book. I could be wrong, but I find that possibly an indication that her sales aren't going as well as she hoped with her previous writings.

I wish her well, but also wish her to move on far from this character. Jmho!

xman yes each have their own
we get along when talks stay away from female genital breast talk & why some say betsy braddock need to have bazookas
TH activating fans early with preorder asks

I stand by my comments.

I could have stated them better but if it was any other writer, I wouldn't have questioned it at all, with this one imho changing everything else about Betsy, I had valid reason to question yet another change and the reason behind it.

I don't need to agree with everyone on everything, that what makes the world go round.

You could be correct, Tini (and Cerebrocast) may possibly be activating fans early by pushing pre-orders, but I think its possibly because this might be her last chance with TPTB.

I again think she's so into fantasy & magic that Dr Strange would be more her style. Or even Apocalypse who she made more magical too.

We shall see. I bought all of Excalibur, most of X of Swords & and all of KOX, but sitting this one out. If I hear rave reviews all around that might change, but I don't hold out much hope lol. Jmho!

Those pre-order numbers are definitely low. Marvel never does lettered previews one month in advance, let alone full 6 pages. The reason for the early previews was to attempt to boost sales right before the final order cut-off date. This book is definitely dead on arrival.

PoetryInMotion said...

@Nate I believe I may have read somewhere that the first issue will be 35 to 40 pages long, so maybe that explains why they released a 6 page lettered preview.

I do hope you're right though, from your mouth to God's ears.

xman lol reply to me like nene leakes - i said what i said

my reply like kandi - and what you said was some bullshit

They have given TH several titles and now larger count page for this waste of paper #1. But couldn't accommodate Hickman for his Inferno mini SMH this editorial team is the worst and needs to be revamped

randybear said...

I'm just going to read spoilers and may pick up the trade months after it releases but big maybe

THE FLYING NEGRO said...

I won't be supporting this financially, but I think this should have been released as a trade paperback format. I think it would have given Marvel more of a sales pop, since a lot of people wait until runs are complete and buy the trades.

Sadly, this is the end for me and Betsy, a character I have loved for two decades. Until someone else comes along and restores/repairs the character, I am going to just move on.

Rahsaan said...

@Flying Negro, same. I’ve pretty much dropped all comic books. The writing just isn’t good compared to the immersive world of fiction I get in novels. Since I got back into reading fiction novels again, I’ve come to realize just how basic much of conic book writing is. Especially, super hero comics. I may check in on Immortal and Red (when this Sinister crossover ends - I have zero interest in crossovers at this point as they all feel so trite and overdone).

THE FLYING NEGRO said...

@Rahsaan

I am in the same boat. I only still read Immortal X-Men and X-Men Red. I have pivoted to manga and manhwa/Yaoi. Also got back into Neil Gaiman short stories for entertainment. Crossovers are just a desperation move by the creatively bankrupt Marvel office to try and drum up sales spikes. Then they reboot back to #1s and then repeat the whole process over.

The X-Office, and probably the entire Marvel needs new management, new editors, new everything IMO. The current regime has killed monthly comics.
