The art looks nice, but Rachel and Betsy becoming a couple feels wrong.

The second panel has Betsy flying showing the blue boots on white tights. It's a great design and contrast. Were the red chain mail shorter such a good pattern would show.

@Mixia, I'm okay with Rachel and Betsy becoming a couple; the problem, to me, was how it came out of nowhere (even Betsy's affair with Cluster in Humphries's UXF run had some foreshadowing before it happened).

@Jaime Braz, I agree! The red chain mail should be shorter; that would make the outfit look perfect.

Tini Howard is retconning stuff as she goes along right? As far as Betsy knows, the Siege Perilous only grants a new life to those who cross it (with loss of memory!). Why are they all suddenly so certain it will help Gambit or accomplish anything other than that?

randybear said...

Cause she's only concerned with writing her fanfic wet dreams. The important story beats dont matter to her as long as she can get Betsy and Rachel making out on panel

@Unknown, Elizabeth does know of at least one case (two if we count them as separate entities post separation_ where the Siege didn't makes travelers amnesiac:

Rogue and the Carol psyche copy that it separated from her

Also, do we know what happened to the select Reavers who were deserted by Pretty Boy, Bonebreaker, and Skullbuster who the X-Men and Roma sent through it?

@Everyone else, I'm not as irked by Elizachel as a pairing as I thought I'd be. They'e had great chemistry as friends for years now. What I am annoyed with is what some of you have pointed out. That is how Tini jumps from A to Z with no real development of character and how poorly her dialogues are written. I got into a debate with her friend, Connor on his Cerebro discord channel a few weeks back. He and others feel that Tini has really developed this relationship's evolution to romance very well and I countered that there was no real progression at all and that it was clear that Rachel seemed to be jonesin' real hard like she did for Kurt and that Betsy displayed more chemistry with Wisdom. We all had to agree to disagree. Thought they did admit that Rachel is obvious when she is into someone and they think that Betsy is a little clueless and that is why it seemed Rachel's affections were not returned. That was their take.

Rahsaan, don't waste your time with Connor/Cerebrocast. Much of Betsy's issues in Excalibur/KoX are in part his fault. He actually gives his "input" to Tini regrding Betsy as he proclaims himself Betsy's biggest fan. In my opinion, Tini is unaware of any cristicism regarding characterization because this guy, Connor, keeps telling her that she writes the best Betsy ever.

randybear said...

Kudos for holding your own. And I dont find Betsy the clueless type.. being sexual used to her like her 1st language lol no way would she be dopey and aloof to Rachel behaving like a dog in heat 😂

Tini is also cerebrocast's client. He's not going to openly go against anything she says/writes. It's all great to him lol

Rahsaan you're wastin your spit on them. That clique hating on Betsy dubbing her privileged filthy rich white princess aka mean White girl. They refused tooth and nail give back the butterfly to Betsy and her confidence mojo. Tini thinks Betsy gifting warwolf to Rachel, talking, dancing and worrying for each other is head over heels love. They were sisters close knit as that. Now they're scissoring it's gross. Same gross Meggan and Kurt were to bone with Brian be third wheel.

Gimme Betsy with the Nanny, Fantomex trio, Deadpool, Neal over this nastiness.

Right gotta meet with the guy and give him the Mojo eyejawculum experience and start seeing things clear. Surefire Psylocke success.

Ask for too much Jaime. Jordan D. white is their supervisor shoehorning himself in the comics for celebrating he's a tacky creeper. 0 taste, 0 morals, 0 sense...

"Tini thinks Betsy gifting warwolf to Rachel, talking, dancing and worrying for each other is head over heels love"

Good point.

Nothing in Excalibur seemed like a clear indication that they were in love with each other (sure, they danced in the Hellfire Gala... Betsy also danced with Pete Wisdom there, so...?) - in fact, other than the warwolf cub and the Gala dance, Rachel's only relevant moment in Excalibur was appearing as a psychic wolf or something - and she didn't do it only for Betsy, but also for Rogue.

And it's not like she's progressing another writer's ideas, as neither Claremont's UXM run during the Reload era, nor Wood's/Guggenheim's/Wilson's X-Men (a.k.a. "X-Women") book had any hint towards Betsy and Rachel being anything other than friends, as far as I remember.

(which is shocking in Claremont's case, as back in his first UXM run, he would have ALL X-Women acting in a flirtatious way with each other... he kinda did this in that X-Women one-shot with Manara's art, but Rachel was flirting with Kitty in that story - and Betsy, with Storm... or was it Rogue?)

Mixia said...

Yes, the biggest issue. It came out of nowhere. And they were great as friends. Now that they are in love, there is going to be drama. It's just Tini Howard fan fiction to me. Tini's bi, so Betsy has to be bi too. Sure, there was that Cluster story, but Cluster was the nice part of Fantomex who Betsy was attracted to for quite a while.

Mixia said...

Amen

Nate X said...

Tini doesn't know how to write female protagonists without projecting herself. Her Catwoman reads exactly like Betsy. And Catwoman fans are also annoyed by the writing.

Rahsaan said...

@Everyone,

I meant to include that many people on that Cerebro Discord channel cited the Reload era as proof that Claremont was writing Elizabeth and Rachel as having a romantic/sexual attraction. I saw them as two women who became friends during that time. Maybe I missed the sexual undertones?

Kiki M. Ishola said...

I kid you not Rahsaan. They're the same mob saying "Like mother like daughter". For Jean get kissed on the cheek by Rogue in Duggan X-Men. You missed nothing in Reload. Betsy and Rachel are sisterly. No scissor sisters. Could be worse tongueing with Opal.

Two comic beings sitting next to each other joking doing whatever is proof they bone. Spidey and Human Torch are gay, Wolfsbane with Mirage, Cannonball with Sunspot, Beast with Wonder Man, Chuck and Mags, Logan and Kurt.

Yukio and Storm is long forgotten tho 🤫

@Rahsaan,

Really? That's surprising. While Claremont has a history of showing the X-Women in flirtatious situations with other women (including with each other), I don't recall any situation involving Betsy and Rachel in the Reload era. Other than that scene in the White Hot Room (which was more about Betsy enjoying the WHR while Rachel was angsting), and some issues later the two of them combining their telekinetic powers in the end of the Shiar arc, they didn't even look like close friends in that run; to me, they were more like two people who didn't know each other very well and then became friends over time.

That said, I do like the idea of the two of them together. Hopefully Howard (or another writer) will manage to make them an interesting couple, like Peter David did with Rictor and Shatterstar.

Nate X said...

Don't bother. Cerebrocast's clique will use any interaction between Betsy and Rachel to justify Tini Howard's poorly written relationship.

That's a problem... I like Catwoman a lot (though it's been a long time since I last read her comic books), but she's very different from Betsy in many aspects, and her personality is very different from Betsy's. If she's really writing both characters with the same personality, that's not a good sign.

But it's interesting to know that she's working for Marvel and DC at the same time. I know that both companies have more important things to do than fighting each other like their fandoms do, but still, that's not very common, is it?

Tazirai said...

It'd be nice If Tini was pulled away from Betsy.

Rahsaan said...

@FSaker,Kiki,Randy,Unknown,

Yup. Cerebro is even now saying on Twitter (if you visit his Twitter today, you'll see the posts with screenshots from reload) that the White Hot Room interaction and Jamie binding their destinies together for his own machinations was a foreshadowing of their romantic attraction. Granted, I know he is super excited about queer representation as am I, but still not sure how any of that Claremont stuff reads as gay at all. Granted, Claremont always writes Rachel as gay, but nothing about his Betsy strikes me as queer and I am also a queer person. I'm wondering if he is being facetious with his posting about the Claremont stuff or maybe that really was his interpretation which is fine as all art is interpretative.

I love that Rachel is confirmed as into women as it's been what Claremont always wanted to do, and I could get behind her and Elizabeth, but I would kinda dig if people just said this started in Excalibur versus Reload. Also, I wish that Tini had written their growing attraction better as it never seemed to be an attraction on Betsy's part, which I chalk up to poor dialogue in Excalibur.

I tried to give the Cerebro Podcast the benefit of the doubt. But He's so hardcore into agreeing with anything Tini does, it's kinda gross. I gave input once, back in 2020, when I was still on Twitter, and had some good Psylocke posts, he asked me to chime in. But he's super Tini, I can't get into that.

He works with Tini. His job is to be her literary agent. Of course he’ll praise her. The problem is that he has a huge platform and is very influential among Twitter fans to the point he actually convinces casuals that Betsy has never been written so good as she is now. Imagine the delusion. Tini is writing HIS idealized version of Betsy, not the Betsy we know and love. Everything he wants Tini puts into paper. It’s sick.

They are organized crime a network of useless people without brains. The comic industry will shut down because of them and beg for money in the streets. They care less because they want to write books but they don't have the talent for that so they destroy comics.
