X-Men Monday #185 – Jordan D. White Reflects on 2022 and Teases 2023

AIPT! shares their annual, end-of-year conversation with X-Men Senior Editor Jordan D. White in which he manages to say nothing interesting at all about Betsy Braddock: Captain Britain.

AIPT: What can we expect from Betsy Braddock: Captain Britain?

Jordan D. White:
Well, Betsy’s obviously been a character we’ve been showcasing for the last few years, but giving her her own series is exciting. There hasn’t been a Captain Britain book for a really long time and never one that was hers, obviously. So we’re super excited to have that happen. And the fact that her and Rachel are in relationship is going to be a big part of that, and that’s why Rachel will be right there in it with her. So it’s going to be terrific. It’s going to shift a little bit away from the multiverse aspects and a little bit more towards the Marvel Universe proper. But I think it’ll be really cool.

Tini Howard Reveals Betsy Braddock's Next Steps

EW: "Knights was what I called Betsy's The Witcher phase. She was in her cool leather, she was kicking ass," Tini Howard says. "Now we're putting her back in the Excalibur costume, we're bringing her back to the United Kingdom, and we're having her really confront this idea that 'alright, you want to be Captain Britain? Some people don't want you to wear that title. So if you're gonna wear it, you have to be here to defend it.' You can't just be one of those guys who comes in, takes the belt at WrestleMania and then doesn't wrestle again for three years."

The United Kingdom has taken a particularly anti-mutant attitude in Marvel comics of late, cutting off diplomatic ties with the mutant nation of Krakoa — which neatly parallels the real-life U.K. exit from European Union. If Betsy's going to win over the British public to supporting a mutant Captain Britain atmosphere, she has a lot of work to do.

Luckily, she's got allies. Even though the title character will be front and center in Betsy Braddock: Captain Britain, her new girlfriend is also along for the ride.

"First of all, it's really exciting to finally be able to say, 'okay they're in a relationship,'" Howard says of Betsy and Rachel. "They're staying together. But the fact is, they both work really hard jobs and they probably don't have as much time to sit around and catch up on Bake Off or whatever. So it's really important to balance that stress. This has always been the thing for Betsy: You have the thing you want, but can you let yourself enjoy it? That's a very Betsy thing, to think 'maybe I don't deserve this.'"

Howard continues, "Rachel's coming from a very different place. Rachel's been more comfortable with who she is for a long time, and has known how she felt about Betsy and accepted it. I think there's going to be a bit of Rachel having to be patient with her girlfriend, and Betsy having to be patient with her girlfriend right back, but that's good, right? To me, the reason we get characters together is not just to watch them kiss, it's to watch them struggle a bit and then kiss again."

Betsy will also have a new ally — another female British superhero taking on the legendary mantle of a male character. That's right: In the second issue of the new series, Captain Britain will cross paths with Captain Carter.

Howard is a fan of both the What If...? animated series, whose first episode introduced Captain Carter (Peggy Carter with the powers of Captain America) to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the recent Captain Carter miniseries by Jamie McKelvie and Marika Cresta. That comic even featured an alternate universe version of Betsy Braddock as an important supporting character — expect Howard to build on that.

"I just simply couldn't help myself," Howard says. "Sometimes you do form stories around that idea that if you google 'Captain Britain,' you'll get pictures of Betsy and pictures of Brian, but also [MCU Peggy Carter actor] Hayley Atwell. That visual of her as Captain Britain is so powerful. Wouldn't someone want that?"

Krakoa Exports Podcast: Tini Howard Talks "Betsy Braddock: Captain Britain"

How was the pitch and what was the original plan for “Knights of X”? Was this meant to be an arc in Excalibur or how you decide to expand this in a series? How the beginning of this series was?

Tini Howard: [Comic books] are like more or less generally pitched and approved in five-issue arcs, and so there was a point where I could have basically chosen to write another five issues of Excalibur and go from there or to pivot to something else. It seemed like one of the biggest criticisms the book got internally, from fans, from friends […] one of its inherent flaws was that it was just stuffed with things […] so I was like “let’s just move houses” […] and wrap up some story elements. A really good way to do that instead of saying hey number 27 has a sharper focus is to just relaunch. […] When I began talking about the second arc of “Knights of X”, it became pretty clear to everyone involved that it should be a Captain Britain book. That was the story I wanted to tell next. The truth is that stories at Marvel are approved in five-issue arcs and I can work with editorial and sales to get allowed to do some things and not allowed to others. I now look in this case and it was genuinely the right move to end this story to pivot to “Betsy Braddock: Captain Britain” as a solo book.

On “Betsy Braddock: Captain Britain”

Tini Howard: The book looks incredible. We’re several issues in and already way ahead. I’ve been really lucky that I’ve been able to do huge things with this character. It’s going to be more about what the rest of the Marvel Universe thinks of Captain Britain, what’s going on back in Britain, what the other heroes think. The core of the book will be seeing Captain Britain with the rest of the Marvel Universe that isn’t necessarily Krakoa- or X-related. Brian is playing a big role in this book. Rachel’s not going anywhere. […] I won’t spoil anything, but I think issue #2 cover is going to excite people when it gets solicited because there’s a crazy team-up that I just had to do. […] It’s very 616-focused because Betsy has power in a realm that is huge and changing all the time and could threaten Earth at any time. She’s really the one person who can control it and put a stop to it. She’s a good person for the Avengers and other people to know.

Is “Betsy Braddock: Captain Britain” a mini?

Tini Howard: Sales determine everything nowadays. Right now, we have five issues planned, but if people pre-order and love it and we do well, then we’ll do more. I’d love to do more.

"Betsy Braddock: Captain Britain" Listed as 5-issue Series

Betsy Braddock: Captain Britain #1 PRE-ORDER

Following some initial confusion with the cover artist and the interior artist both claiming “Betsy Braddock: Captain Britain” was a 5-issue limited series, Marvel later confirmed its status as an ongoing.

As was the case with “Knights of X”, Amazon.com is now listing “Betsy Braddock: Captain Britain” also as a limited series, which means the first arc is secured; however, a second arc will depend on strong sales.

Even though most of us do not like Tini Howard’s writing, we advise you to support this title because an early cancellation will mean Betsy in comic book limbo for a few more months as we are experiencing now. We wouldn’t like Betsy to miss the X-Men’s big 60th anniversary next year. Enduring Tini Howard’s poor characterization will be the lesser of two evils.

X-Men Monday #176 – X Me Anything With Jordan D. White

AIPT: Welcome back to X-Men Monday, Jordan D. White! We haven’t had a chance to talk about all those NYCC 2022 announcements, so let’s talk about all those NYCC 2022 announcements! First up, you’re known to be a big fan of Brian Braddock’s classic Captain Britain adventures. What has you most excited about Betsy Braddock: Captain Britain?

Jordan: Well, I’ve been excited about Betsy being Captain Britain since we made that change. I mean, both of those characters are characters I love. I think making her Captain Britain was a really great way to give her and Kwannon some distinction while still allowing us to use what makes both of their characters great.

In addition, I’m a fan of classic Brian Braddock stories — one of the most notable ones is about Betsy being Captain Britain — and it goes extremely poorly for her. So it’s been nice to give her some redemption on that. I wouldn’t say 100% she was a woman in a refrigerator in that story, but it’s certainly refrigerator-adjacent to the extent that it’s a story about her failing. So that’s unfortunate. It’s very much that her being hurt is there to elicit an enormous emotional response in Brian.

For those of you who don’t know what I’m talking about, here’s the spoiler. It’s a classic story where Betsy becomes Captain Britain and Brian is retired from it. He’s like, “Fine, I’ll just go and hang out with my girlfriend Meggan.” And a character named Slaymaster comes up and is fighting Betsy Captain Britain and he pokes her eyes out and blinds her. And Brian, upon hearing this, is enraged and tracks Slaymaster down and kills him. I think Brian smashes his head in with a giant boulder.

It’s nice now to be able to bring her back as Captain Britain and redeem her and be like, “No, she’s not an incompetent character.” Now, obviously, she’s been through a lot since then. She rose to being a huge member of the X-Men in the time since then. But it’s nice that she gets to be Captain Britain again and show that she can in fact handle it. I’m also glad that we figured out a place for Brian, making him Captain Avalon. He’s very much a big part of this series. Tini Howard has been doing a great job shaping Betsy’s destiny over the last few years.

And it’s nice that this time, instead of featuring her in a team book, this is a book about her and gets to really spotlight her and focus in, as well as showing her newly formed relationship with Rachel — a thing that was kind of bubbling in the background of Excalibur and Knights of X that then came to the forefront in Knights of X and now gets to be an official thing that they are an item. I’m really excited for that. Off the top of my head, I can’t think of another X-book that was led by an LGBTQ relationship. Obviously, we’ve had a number led by people who are engaged in a straight relationship. We have one that we just announced — Rogue & Gambit. But it’s exciting that this one gets to be so front and center.

Tini Howard Talks 'Betsy Braddock: Captain Britain'

Substack: Here it is hot off the NYCC 2022 Women of Marvel panel - the solo comic to rule them all. From myself and stunning artist Vasco Georgiev comes BETSY BRADDOCK: CAPTAIN BRITAIN, launching in February 2023.

Titling a book is an art, not a science. In comics especially, when a bookseller is looking at a long list of what to order, they often don’t even get to see a picture, much less hear your little clever spiel. So your title has to sort of instantly do one of two things -

1. Tell the potential reader exactly what it is, and deliver what it says on the tin.
2. Intrigue them enough that they won’t care. This is the riskier option, and if I’m being honest? It’s the one I prefer.

I like my readers to be like me, inquisitive, and open to exploring, so I try to attract like with like.

I didn’t want to do that this time. After getting to spend 31 issues with Betsy Braddock so far, I feel more confident than ever that she’s ready to meet the rest of the Marvel Universe. And for that to happen, we need a no-bullshit title that lets everyone know what’s going on.

“How about Betsy Braddock: Captain Britain?” I suggested to my editors and pals over a particularly noodle-baking Zoom session. We’d tossed a lot of titles around, and I’m grateful to have a team of editors that will all drop and get on the phone when one of these creative challenges emerges.

I like it because it’s welcoming to new fans, fans who haven’t read a Captain Britain comic since the eighties, or fans who haven’t heard Betsy Braddock’s name since she wasn’t in her body. It’s a title that tells you what’s up, even if you haven’t read a Captain Britain comic since Betsy was Captain the first time.

We’re leaving Krakoa behind for a time, and heading Marvel Universe-ward, reuniting Betsy with her brothers Brian and Jamie and bringing along her girlfriend, Rachel Summers, the recently christened Askani. Vasco Georgiev is our artist and he’s bringing his bright, beautiful, gorgeous superhero style to Betsy’s new adventure, giving it a real neo-Alan Davis feel.

I have to show you guys a super secret panel crop, right? But I don’t want to give anything away, so…

I’ll give you something you’re expecting that you’ll hopefully love:
