Charles Soule Twitter Q&A

Charles Soule on Astonishing X-MenAstonishing X-Men is designed to be picked up cold - I reintroduce the characters for new readers. It's intense, kind of scary, with big beats.

On the cast: The characters are sort of a cast more than a team - but all have important roles to play. You'll see. Especially excited to write Bishop.

On Old Man Logan part of multiple books: I hear you, but I needed his particular character and background here. Laura wouldn't work for the story I'm telling.

On whether Psylocke will wear her ninja "thong" again: Page 3 of #1 has a specific note about not doing that, I'm afraid. Psylocke has a huge role in the story, though. I don't think it [the thong] makes sense for what she does in the story - that simple.

On Astonishing X-Men primary location: Primary location is London.

On whether the team is getting new uniforms: Yes. But it's a cast, not a team.

On the cast backstory: The whole cast has super complex pasts. Not ignoring the history, but I am specifically writing this so you DON'T HAVE TO KNOW IT TO ENJOY.

On continuityI wanted to favor accessibility over strict continuity in Astonishing. Some longtime X-fans may dislike that, but I'll take the hit.

Charles Soule Headlines 'Astonishing X-Men', Bishop and Fantomex Join

Marvel.comYou asked for it! You got it! The hardest hitting mutants. The biggest villains. The best creators. Marvel is pleased to announce that chart-topping writer Charles Soule (DEATH OF WOLVERINE, INHUMANS VS. X-MEN) will headline the all-new ASTONISHING X-MEN. A new prestigious ongoing series from top-tier creators set to unite some of the most popular, fan-demanded characters in the X-Men mythology for an epic story that will redefine the mutant landscape in the Marvel Universe!

“If you’re going to relaunch a book called ASTONISHING X-MEN, it had better live up to the title,” says Marvel Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso. “Charles and his soon-to-be-revealed collaborators are about to unveil a story that touches every corner of the X-Men mythology, and the first issue alone will have massive ramifications for the Children of the Atom. We can’t wait to tell you more about this book.”

Old Man Logan, Archangel, Mystique, Rogue, Gambit, Psylocke and Fantomex. Together, they are the Astonishing X-Men. But what brings this eclectic collection of heroes together? A familiar menace has once again reared its ugly head – reborn, renewed and resurrected. To defeat one of their greatest foes and rescue one of their own, the X-Men’s greatest will assemble for a mission that will take them places you never thought they’d go!

“Other than the occasional line here and there, I haven’t written most of the characters in the Astonishing X-Men lineup before – for me, that’s a fantastic challenge,” shares Soule. “It’s been fun to get into their heads and think about what they all might have going on at this point in their lives. That said, the series is designed as a fresh starting point, so anyone jumping in with [ASTONISHING X-MEN #1] will get everything they need there to follow the story – even if it’s your first X-story.

“The book is designed to tell a very focused, specific story, with a few cool main villains,I’m writing it like a puzzle box, with new layers and reveals opening up every issue. So, you’ll never know exactly where it’s going to go next – but the structure is built in such a way that almost anything from the long, incredible history of the X-Men can pop up. If you think about these characters, they’ve been present or involved for virtually every major era of X history, all the big events. That’ll play a role in a big way.”

As deadly forces await, will the Astonishing X-Men’s first mission also be their last? Find out this July, in the blockbuster ASTONISHING X-MEN #1!

Crystal happily accepts as payback. Emma encourages the X-Men, as Rogue figures out Emma wants blood on her hands. Emma and The Cuckoos instantly control 4 Inhumans mentally. A mentally controlled Johnny leads an attack against Crystal and Medusa. A Mosaic-controlled Storm sweeps in to defend the Inhumans, but Naja jumps him. The X-Men worry as Magneto and Storm are now out. Emma yells at them to fight. Black Bolt jumps at Emma and she crystalizes and rams her hand through his body. Colossus and Havok arrive, and Havok, angry at Emma, blasts her using his powers. Psylocke, X23 and OML corner Medusa, Reader and Frank. Psylocke threatens Medusa and they fight. Reader tells Medusa they need to retreat but Medusa wants to make a stand. Just then, Ahura arrives in a big ship. The ship contains Forge and the NuHumans. Medusa is relieved to see Ahura and Iso, who tell her the truth about why the mutants attacked. Medusa claims they could’ve just asked her. Moon Girl and the NuHumans hand Medusa the control to the “terrigen eater”. As the cloud is about to hit and kill Magneto, Medusa hits the button causing the machines to suck up the terrigen. Emma is not satisfied and wants the attacks to continue. Teen Cyclops jumps in and exposes the truth about Cyclops. Storm asks Emma if it’s true and she gladly admits it saying it’s what Cyclops would’ve wanted. She then takes out her own remote and says “so is this.” Explosions! Mega Super Sentinels show up! Emma has turned them against the Inhumans. Emma mocks Medusa asking her how it feels. The sentinels blow up the “terrigen eaters”. Emma wonders why she didn’t do that earlier. OML saves the life of a grateful Inferno. Forge reveals Emma must’ve gotten in his head to build the sentinels. Cerebra goes to stop them, but Magneto blows them up. Emma thanks him and Magneto replies: It’s like I always tell people… Emma was right! Medusa and Black Bolt fly up together to stop Magneto and Emma. Johnny surprises them all by blowing up a mega sentinel, which allows Medusa to hit Emma and knock her out. Magneto comes to his senses as Emma was controlling him. As Medusa holds a diamond Emma with her hair, Storm destroys the rest of the sentinels. Medusa gives a speech about how much Cyclops’ death tormented her. Medusa then tries to kill Emma, but Havok blasts her. He tells Emma he’s doing this for Cyclops and not her. The two teleport away.

Muir Island: Storm, Jean, and OML meet with Beast to release him and apologize. Medusa narrates that Emma, who’s on the run, is now wanted by the X-Men as much as the Inhumans.

New Attilan: Medusa abdicates, and Iso is the new Queen of New Attilan. For the first time in 200 years, the Inhuman society will hold free elections. Medusa thinks love drove Emma mad and so she dumps Johnny Storm as she makes amends with Black Bolt.

Marvel Announces 'ResurXtion' Mystery Series

Newsamara: Marvel has teased another X-Men title launching this summer as part of its "ResurrXion" relaunch. Announced on Twitter, the promo art by Jim Cheung features Old Man Logan, Archangel, and an unknown number of silhouetted characters. It was tweeted with the caption "The comic series fans have been demanding! Coming June 2017."

Though no title or creative team was revealed, the line-up seems to strongly imply that the new series will be a variation on the more recent iterations of X-Force. Both Logan (albeit a different version) and Archangel were key characters in Rick Remender and Jerome Opena's popular volume of Uncanny X-Force from a few years ago.

Expect more teasers that will reveal this apparent team's roster in the coming days before the inevitable full details of the mystery title are finally announced.

#tbt: X-Men #22 – The Revanche Saga, Chapter 3

#tbt: X-Men #22 – In the state of Lord Nyoirin, the X-Men do battle with the Silver Samurai, whom they manage to defeat. After the fight, Gambit finds a scroll behind the torn painting of Psylocke/Kwannon they noticed earlier. It is Nyoirin's diary. The X-Men study Nyoirin's diary. Written in Japanese, Psylocke says that she cannot read it. Angered, the British Betsy uses her Psi-blade on Psylocke to explain what the scroll said and to mind probe Psylocke to see what she recalls. Through Psylocke's memories, the X-Men see Kwannon on a shipping dock where she finds Betsy Braddock unconscious just after she emerged from the Siege Perilous. Kwannon tries to help Betsy but when they touch both their minds merge and the two people become one mind in two bodies. With the memory finished, Psylocke, who feels angry about what she considers lies from Betsy, attacks her, forcing Gambit to step in and break up the fight. Suddenly, Lord Nyoirin arrives and explains to the two female X-Men that both of them are Kwannon and both of them are Betsy Braddock. Written by Fabian Nicieza and Art by Andy Kubert.
