Bad Romance: Joe Casey Breaks Down the X-Men

Newsarama: Welcome back to Bad Romance, our Valentine’s Day look at why many relationships in superhero comics are just plain wrong. This time, we look at bad romances in the X-Men books...and given how many teams there’ve been over the years, there’s plenty of weird material out there. Teenagers and mutant genes will do that.
To help guide us through this twisted world, we got as our special guest commentator Joe Casey, co-creator of Ben 10 and Generator Rex, along with many comics including the upcoming Butcher Baker from Image Comics. And of course he did a tour of duty on Uncanny X-Men last decade.

Casey offered some hilarious (and profane) insights into the X-Romances...though be forewarned, this gets pretty twisted, even for comics. You might need therapy after reading this. We did.

Psylocke and Cypher: In her first US appearance, Captain Britain’s eyeless purple-haired psychic sister Betsy gets rescued by Kitty Pryde's contemporary Doug Ramsey from the extra-dimensional entertainment mogul Mojo, who gives her cybernetic eyes.

Toward the end of the story, Psylocke reflects that she senses Doug's feelings for her...and that she has feelings herself. This was promptly and mercifully swept aside so that Psylocke could die, be resurrected as a hot Asian, die again and then come back again, while Cypher could also die, be merged with an alien technorganic life form, and then be resurrected as a human again. Comics!

Casey: “My head hurts again. X-Men in the ‘90s. Go figure.”

Cup 'O Joe: X-Events

CBR: This week, Tom Brevoort announces a project that will lead the way into next summer's big X-Men event! Read on!

On the other end of the event spectrum, I understand you have a new book coming in May to kick off the next X-Men event with the four issue "X-Men: Prelude" series by Paul Jenkins. Is this story a bit of a culmination of Axel's time leading the X-Office? I know he'd been hinting a big story in the works for a while before becoming Editor-in-Chief.

Brevoort: The X-Men event that's coming up is definitely not an ending or the close of an era necessarily, because by the end of it we'll establish a new situation that will project the X-Men into the next few years, potentially. That having been said, the day-to-day responsibilities for the X-Men have passed from Axel to Nick Lowe, and so Nick will be much more involved in the specific of events there and may guide them in a slightly different direction. That having been said, Axel is Editor-in-Chief and is going to be overseeing all of this stuff, so it'll still head down the path he's set for it.

But the incoming X-event is definitely a culmination of a number of the threads and story points that have been percolating since back in "Messiah CompleX," and maybe even a little earlier than that. Paul's story functions as an overture to the event. It's not connected so much on a plot level as it is on a thematic level. It sets the table for what's to come from July to October, which is when the next X-Crisis will hit.

In story terms, Axel has been talking a lot about the stories coming up dealing with a leadership struggle, and as far as I understand it "X-Men: Prelude" will focus each issue on a different character -- the first drawn by Robert De La Torre and the second by Laurence Campbell. Paul Jenkins often does stories for you guys that pull in tight on character work amidst big events. How does this project fit that skill set?

Brevoort: There are two different things. The story coming up focuses not so much on the finite question of, "Who will lead the X-Men?" as much as it does the broader notion of, "Where does the mutant race want or need to be led at this point? Who is in the best position to give that guidance?" Certainly within the books over the past couple of years, the X-Men have drifted away from Professor X's philosophy and onto another path that Cyclops has been forced by circumstances to take them down, along with some other folks -- Wolverine and Rogue and a few others. Paul's story specifically focuses on the four characters who are at the forefront of the leadership question for mutantkind: Professor X, Cyclops, Wolverine and Magneto. Each issue of the series -- because Paul tends to focus on individual 22-page stories even as they all connect in the larger whole -- will paint a picture and give you an idea of what the mindset, direction and directive for each of these guys is going into the next event. And as I said, that'll be less about who leads the team as it will be about, "Where do we go from here?" or, "What is the path we'll choose to follow?" Some degree of optimism has returned with the appearance of Hope and the Five Lights, meaning that maybe the mutant race is not as absolutely on a path to extinction as it seemed over the past couple of years. So what do they do next as a result of this sea-change? Paul's story is very much about who these four characters are as individuals and what their specific philosophies are as we dive into that epic.

Wolverine's X-Men And Cyclops' X-Men For 2012?

BleedingCool: I have been led to understand by a reputable comics source certain details about the future direction of the X-Men books, post-Fear Itself, possibly towards the end of the year, but into the next.

Understand that this is as a result of a recent X-summit, but also that these are plans many months away from completion and the details are bound to change. It may indicate a certain direction to look out for, however.

I’m told the members of the X-Men are planned to be split into two very distinct teams and books, each with a different moral outlook, aligning along the traditional Xavier/Magneto divide. Scott Summers, Cyclops, will lead the Xavier-minded team, while the Magneto-motivated will be led by… Wolverine!

Jason Aaron will be writing a four issue extra-sized mini about Wolverine’s X-Men, with a different celebrity comics artist on each issue. Marc Silvestri is down for one and McNiven is another.

And look for companion mini-series focused on the setup of Scott’s X-Men, potentially to be written by current Uncanny X-Men writer Kieron Gillen.

And of course, Wolverine will stay in X-Force… and Avengers… and Moon Knight… and Wolverine… and…

X-Position: Kathryn Immonen

CBR: "Wolverine & Jubilee" first issue arrived in stores in January, which naturally means questions from the X-community. Fortunately, CBR lends a hand with answers as Kathryn Immonen joins for her first ever X-Position!

I greatly enjoyed the first issue "Wolverine and Jubilee." It's a fantastic issue filled with action and fine-tuned characterization, but I do wonder why you might've chosen Pixie, Armor, and Rockslide as supporting characters for this story. Although I do want to see Jubilee form new relationships, I'm more curious about her older relationships (outside of Wolverine), like those with Storm, Psylocke, Gambit, and Husk. How did you pick your supporting players? And did you intentionally avoid the latter?

Kathryn Immonen: Aside from the fact that I'm nuts about Rockslide, I think it's a natural fit to put Jubilee into contact with the other young X-Men, even if it was only for contrast. At this point, she's going to be seventeen forever. She'll always be one of the kids, even if -- all things being equal -- she's going to outlive Wolverine. She's never been more of an outsider. There'll be time, I'm sure, to get to her interaction with many of the other X-Men, but for this, we started with the one constant in her life (Wolverine) and moved forward from there.

Do You Want Psylocke in "Marvel VS. Capcom 3"?

Do You Want Psylocke in "Marvel VS. Capcom 3"? Yes! At this stage of development, everything is pretty much locked down, but as Ryota Niitsuma, Marvel vs. Capcom 3’s Producer, once stated: "Fan demand might affect future DLC." What are we waiting for? Let's start requesting Psylocke to be included and show Marvel and Capcom that there is a high demand for Psylocke in Marvel vs. Capcom 3!

Psylocke by Jamie McKelvie

Generation Hope artist Jamie McKelvie did a nice Psylocke redesign via Tumblr. He says: "Another warm-up sketch/wind-down colours. This time Psylocke, rejigged. Not sure if it’s clear, but the idea is her suit incorporates a hood."

Tuesday Q&A: Rick Remender

Marvel: With the shocking conclusion to his first Uncanny X-Force arc and the recent reveal of Flash Thompson as the man underneath the symbiote in Venom, the phrase "expect the unexpected" certainly seems to go hand in hand with the work of writer Rick Remender.

At the end of Second Coming, Cyclops disbanded his covert operations team X-Force, citing that the X-Men no longer needed them. However, the squad's leader Wolverine disagreed. The feral mutant now leads his own secret task force that also includes Deadpool, Psylocke, Archangel and Fantomex in Uncanny X-Force. In the title's opening arc, the team went after a newly reborn Apocalypse resurrected in the body of a young boy. While his cohorts argued over how to handle the situation, Fantomex made the tough decision himself and killed the child.

Marvel.com: Before we go into the upcoming arc of UNCANNY X-FORCE, I wanted to hit on the ending of your first. That came as quite the twist. Did you know exactly how this was going to end going in?

Rick Remender: Yeah. Before we started the first issue, we made sure the entire arc was rewritten to the point that everyone knew it frontwards and back. This one was also one we broke out at the X-Retreat and discussed, so we had a little of feedback from the room as well. This thing was tightly locked down. We wanted to make sure that given the weight of what we were doing the arc was planned out to the end from the very beginning.

Marvel.com: What went into creating that ending and having it be completely silent once Fantomex makes the kill shot?

Rick Remender: I had two great editors on the book for the first arc, Axel Alonso and Jody LeHeup. These guys have great instincts, as they should given that they control a lot of big things. I wrote it, and initially I had a line after Fantomex shot the kid, which was "This is what we came to do." Jody or Axel or both of them said to cut it. It's silent. It's totally silent. I was nervous about that at first, but you've got an artist in Jerome Opena who sells cinematic storytelling and emotion so well that you can cut most of your dialogue. If [the] dialogue ended up on the cutting floor of this issue in particular, I think you'd be astonished. I would say that no less than 40 percent of the dialogue and the captions were cut because the artwork did such a good job of conveying the emotion and the story on its own. Every word in the issue is absolutely necessary and I think people respond to that. It takes a few extra days and a little more work, but the end product we want [is for] X-FORCE to be special. It's dealing with big, iconic and cool characters in the Marvel Universe that I can play with and do cool things with. So, it's kind of great on all fronts. And if we can keep up the level of craftsmanship and the amount of time we're pouring into the book, I think that what we'll get is something pretty special out of it.

Marvel.com: You mentioned cool characters and doing cool things with them. What do you have planned for the team as far as that goes, especially Deadpool, a pretty big fan favorite across the board?

Rick Remender: In the upcoming arc "The Deathlok Nation," in the third issue there's a big scene where I focus on something I've been building up to. I tear away a few layers of [Deadpool's] character to what's underneath it and who's inside. I've got the first 17 issues pretty mapped out and I've even written the beginning of issue #13 and #15 because I've got different artists working on these things. I know this first year of storylines pretty forward and back, and I know what I'm building to, which is pretty helpful. So, the role that Deadpool is playing, it's mapped out in his character arc and that comes to something of a head in issue #7. All the characters have their arc. They're all going to change and adapt and they're all going to have their interpersonal relationships fleshed out.

Marvel.com: Looking at the upcoming Point One issue, what can you say about what's going on in there and how it ties into the greater scheme of things in the book moving forward?

Rick Remender: It's an important issue for setting things up that are going to play a bigger role coming down the line. But it's also a self-contained story that reintroduces Lady Deathstrike and the Reavers. They've set up camp in their original base in Australia, where the X-Men made their home for a few years. They've got Gateway back and it's sort of resetting a lot of cool villains like Reese and the original Reavers. And Lady Deathstrike has been rebuilt and put back together in her Barry Windsor Smith outfit. It's returning to the roots on those characters as well telling an iconic and self-contained X-Force story that tells you who the characters are, what their mission is, what their personal interactions are. It serves a lot of purposes.

This was a lot of work. [Laughs] Self-contained stories are always a lot of work to make sure you've got a beginning, middle and end that's satisfying. We knew that this was going to be setting something up for Lady Deathstrike and the Reavers for later. We knew that we wanted to have it accessible, which means you have to approach the characters as if it's the first time anyone has ever read them. It means you have to be natural and avoid exposition, while being unnatural and cramming in exposition. You have to find clever ways to get information across to where it feels like people aren't being fed information. I think that's the point of it. If you haven't been reading the series, you can buy it and get a taste for the tone and the characters and missions they take on. And if have been reading it, you get the return of Lady Deathstrike and the Reavers and the beginning of some things to come.
